Hymers College Junior Monthly Messenger - October 2022

Message from the Head I very much hope you enjoy reading this edition of the Junior Monthly Messenger. One of the highlights of the week in the Junior School is our Commendation Assembly on Fridays. Individual children and groups are awarded commendations by staff, celebrating all kinds of endeavours, often related to our CARE Code. For example, it may be for kindness or for showing outstanding effort or attitude in class or in an extra-curricular activity. It is particularly heartening to see the spirit of supportiveness amongst the pupil body when commendations are awarded. Each half-term, we hold a Headteacher’s Commendation Assembly to celebrate children’s outstanding endeavours over the past few weeks; Mrs Walmsley then creates a beautiful display in the foyer, including some of the children’s first-class work (see page 3). We are delighted with the way the children have returned after the half-term break, rested and ready to continue stretching themselves both in and out of the classroom. With productions, concerts and much more to look forward to, the next few weeks in school look set to be an exciting time for all. Peter Doyle, Head of Junior School

Sportacular Success! The school has enjoyed considerable success this term in sport. The U11A Rugby squad has won the Harrison Cup and the 11A and 11B squad was joint winners of the HMC Rugby tournament. Reports of both competitions as well as the Sports Tour can be found in this edition of the Monthly Messenger. Massive congratulations to all involved! Big games have come thick and fast for our U11A Rugby squad. After an incredible performance just a week or so earlier at the HMC Rugby competition, at which the boys won the trophy for the first time in Hymers’ history, the team made their way across to QEGS Wakefield to participate in the Harrison Cup. This was the 34th year of the Harrison Cup, a tournament that has never been won by a Hymers team. Each and every player conducted themselves superbly all day, demonstrating all the core values of rugby throughout and showing some fantastic skill, pace and power. Consequently, Hymers lifted the Harrison Cup for the first time and rightly earned the plaudits of coaches and supporters alike. Well done to everyone involved – it was a pleasure to watch and the boys are a real pleasure to coach. It has been a phenomenal season so far and I am hopeful there will be more successes to come! HMC Rugby Winners! A Team Result - WINNERS After a very positive display of rugby up in Aysgarth a week earlier, our U11As came into the HMC Rugby tournament full of confidence. However, this tournament is always a major challenge and to win it would require us to go unbeaten against at least six other big rugby schools in the North East of England. This they achieved with aplomb, for the first time in Hymers history, in a sustained performance of incredible focus, commitment and skill. Consequently, the boys were deservedly awarded the HMC Rugby Core Values trophy. B Team Result – JOINT WINNERS The B team arrived at GSAL full of excitement and hope that was not to be dampened – despite the dreary weather. Despite a delayed arrival the boys hit the ground running and put in an extremely dominant performance over RGS Newcastle. This performance set the tone for the group stages and wins over GSAL, St. Peter’s, Chorister and Yarm followed. We are so proud of the boys for their achievement and are looking forward to seeing how this group of players progresses over their Hymers careers.

HMC Hockey Well done also to our U11 A and B Hockey teams who played in the HMC Hockey tournament. Our A team finished a respectable 3rd place overall! Super work!

Year 6 Sports Tour Some children in Year 6 travelled to Worcester for two nights. They enjoyed playing rugby, hockey and netball matches against RGS The Grange, Kings St Albans and King’s Hawford as well as an educational visit to Cadbury World. Much fun was also had bowling and eating! I really enjoyed sports tour. I won’t ever forget the cocoa bean train ride; it was so fun! Francesca

The sports tour was great especially Cadbury World and the Premier Inn. Worcester was spectacular and in the games we drew 2-2 then won 3-1 then lost 2-3. Blake Sports Tour was a fun experience. We went to Ask Italian on the first night and then ten pin bowling which was so much fun! The next day we went to Cadbury World and after that we had our fixture. On the night we went to Benedicto’s and enjoyed delicious pizza. I had a great time! Tiguida The Year 6 children who stayed at school also had a fun packed two days which involved a D.T. workshop, a Lifeguard training session, an Art workshop and Forest School.

Art

In the Art room during October, we looked at shape and colour. The pupils studied Georgia O’Keeffe as starting points to their work on colour. They learned about ‘the mother of American modernism’s’ life and went on to create fantastic paintings of leaves, flowers and citrus fruits. The pupils have worked so hard and I am constantly bowled over by their finished pieces. Well done everyone!

Spooky Biscuits! Year 3 pupils had great fun piping scary spiders onto ginger biscuits and made gift boxes to take them home for the holidays.

Year 4 turned cereal boxes into scary lanterns and used programmable ‘Crumble’ controllers to design flashing light sequences to go inside them.

Food Glorious Food! Year 6 designed healthy eating posters to encourage our pupils to make healthier food choices at mealtimes. Well done to Pippa, Amelia and Francesca who were the three lucky winners! The children enjoyed preparing and tasting Super Spicy Salsa and brought in a bumper harvest of Bramley apples to make delicious Fruit Crumbles. Well done to all those master bakers out there!

A man got back from his local supermarket where he had observed a man buying five paellas, three sombreros and four bags of churros. He thought to himself, ‘Hispanic buying!’
