We owe immense thanks to our alumni network who have a huge positive impact on our Sixth Form students’ lives. Each week we hold multiple Sixth Form society meetings and invite Old Hymerian speakers from across the globe to talk to our students about their career pathways. The Development Office aims to find a Hymerian connection across any specific industry that our Sixth Form has an interest in. This term alone, our societies in Law, Classics, Medicine, History of Art, Languages, Business Economics, and Engineering have welcomed over 20 OH visitors to share their journeys and speak to our students.
Our Law Society has enjoyed afternoons at a local solicitor’s and at Hull Combined Magistrates court, sitting in trials and meeting HHJ Thackray KC Judge after an invite for our students to visit. Over 30 Old Hymerians tested our Year 13 students with mock interview practice in November across a range of disciplines to prepare them for the challenges of interviews for competitive university places. We have enjoyed Zoom meetings to Dubai and Hong Kong about the events industry, calls across the world about fashion design, a work experience placement with a hedge fund manager, and Old Hymerians visit in person to meet students on a one-to-one basis.

I am so grateful for the support of the team in The Development Office. Within days of me asking if they knew anyone in fashion design, I had two Zoom meetings in my lunch break and one Old Hymerian came to meet me to chat through my options and share all her experience within fashion.
We are an English A Level class and many of us are still undecided about our career choices. In recent weeks we have had a journalist and an Old Hymerian, who has authored her own poetry book come and chatted with us about their career after Hymers; it has opened up even more options for us to consider. Sixth Form Hymers Student
I wondered if anyone at Hymers had followed an acting career and The Development Office arranged for me to speak to West End and Broadway Old Hymerian actors within weeks.

I approached Mrs Pennack about an Old Hymerian working in the finance industry and within a couple of weeks I had a Zoom call with a hedge fund manager in The City. His knowledge and wealth of experience I know will be hugely beneficial to me. Abdur - Sixth Form Hymers Student
Last week a Fund Manager chatted to us on Zoom about his career after University and what he looks for when hiring graduates fresh from university. He offered to support some of us when we get to that stage and go back to him and see what job opportunities were at his employer! Year 12 Economics student
I know I want to study Medicine but I am not sure where, or in which specialism. We have had so many Old Hymerian speakers this term, from an anaesthetist surgeon through to a clinical psychologist. The offers of support to the group for work experience and mentoring have been amazing. It has also been wonderful to grow our medical network. Year 12 aspiring medic student
We said that we would like to hear from anyone working in Law - we have heard from a judge, an in-house lawyer, a partner of a law firm, a barrister, and a district crown prosecutor already this half term. We have learned so much already! Maisie - Year 12 aspiring lawyer
When I moved to the Sixth Form I hoped that there would be a network of Old Hymerians who could share their Classics journey. We have had two speakers this half term to talk to us about their career pathway and to share their experiences after school. Year 12 Latin student
I have found the Old Hymerian network to be immensely valuable and I believe it’s something that other schools struggle to rival. The OH network can be a great source for work experience placements which are so helpful in getting insight into a particular industry or business, but also they are so important to help boost your personal statement for university applications. In an increasingly competitive environment, it really does set you apart from other candidates, which is crucial when trying to secure university offers. Personally, I have been able to leverage my experience gained during a work experience placement at an investment firm, that was set up through the OH network to help me pass interviews and to gain university offers. In addition to this, I was able to set up Zoom and telephone calls with OH’s who currently work in banking for interview advice and prep. The OH network is extremely eager to help and give back, and because of this help, I was able to land a Financial Markets Apprenticeship at Standard Chartered Bank, which meant I decided to turn down my offer from the University of Edinburgh to study finance. Even after I have left Hymers and started working, the OH network is still so helpful as it gives me internal contacts in the firm with which I now work, as well as contacts in a new city who are always keen to support other Old Hymerians, even after they have left school. Finn Starky - Class of 2023
The Development Office helped me to source over 130 hours of quality local work experience with their super friendly and helpful contacts. This is an excellent opportunity on offer that strengthened my university application and really makes the Hymers Sixth Form the best! I really do believe that the opportunity provided has made my dental application to university so strong. Callum - Sixth Form student
In July 2023, I was admitted to the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons after graduating with a Bachelor’s in Veterinary Medicine and Science (BVMSci) from the University of Surrey. This achievement is shared with numerous people who have helped me during my academic progression, but none more so than the staff at Hymers and the alumni network of Old Hymerians. I am certain that the academic environment and support network at Hymers was the sole reason I gained a place at vet school. But looking back on my fond school day memories, I have come to realise that Hymers is also the reason I have been able to succeed over the past five years. The school instils an unwavering work ethic in the students that study there. Hymers makes you realise, aim for, and achieve your full potential. I firmly believe this is the single greatest asset anyone, student or otherwise, can possess, as hard work conquers all! I owe a massive debt to the school, as not many people thought I could make it to vet school, let alone graduate! George Burns, Class of 2017
