Curriculum

Year 12 & 13

Students generally choose three subjects (four in certain circumstances). Course availability of some subjects may depend upon demand. The Sixth Form provision is continuously reviewed to respond to the needs of pupils. The most up-to-date list of courses is available by contacting the School.

A number of independently studied courses are also available, such as the Extended Project Qualification and the Certificate in Financial Studies. Students are supported through their studies via a tutor typically in a small group of 12 who meet on a daily basis.

Our dedicated Sixth Form Centre has its own Junior Common Room, dining facility, computer suites, study areas and socialising hubs.

There are also screens showing important notices and Sixth Form news. Students are encouraged to use our Learning Resource Centre, which has areas conducive to silent study and independent learning, a skill required for university life and further education.

We also encourage a variety of learning methods for Sixth Form pupils, including weekly lectures from exciting external speakers ranging from a Holocaust survivor to hypnotist Martin Taylor.

Co-curricular

We encourage our students to be busy and make the most of all the activities we have on offer, of which there are many.

In addition to the creative arts and sports activities we have timetabled, we provide a Sixth Form specific co-curricular programme for our students to become involved in.

Our pupils also enjoy a variety of field trips throughout their time in the Sixth Form. Most recently, these have included a Physics trip to Switzerland, Biology trip to Cranedale and CatZero yachting expedition.

Our senior sports squads have the opportunity to go on tour to destinations in the UK and abroad. The most recent trip took our hockey, rugby and netball teams on a tour to South Africa and New Zealand is planned for 2023.

Our students in Years 12 & 13 have enjoyed recent national recognition in a number of areas including National Schools Badminton Championships, ISGA Finalists, National Squash Trophy Finalists, National Representation for Science Olympiads, National Engineering Finalists, Cambridge Schools Debating Competition Finalists and Winners of the Arkwright Engineering Scholarship to name but a few.

Preparing for the future

The careers programme starts in Year 8 with a coordinated approach through to Year 13. Our specialist careers advisor is on hand to give individual advice and guidance to all pupils. Greater emphasis is given in Year 11 and beyond, with an annual Careers Convention attracting senior representatives and young graduates from over 50 organisations covering a full range of career areas. Students in Years 11-13 take part in our successful work experience programme with help from our dedicated coordinator, and students also focus on employability skills. Our annual practice interviews evening for Year 13 involves a network of professionals from academic institutions, healthcare and local businesses to help students gain valuable experience, especially when applying for competitive university places.

The Careers department re-awarded the Quality in Careers Standard, a nationally recognised award, in July 2021.

This very special escape game showcases a range of surprising careers in the chemical sciences. This game is aimed towards 14-16 year olds with content relevant to GCSE. It will show you students what is like to work with chemistry in areas such as volcanology, antarctic research and biomedical writing.

The 3Dami Summer Studio is a chance for young people to create a 3D film in just 10 days. With the help of animation experts, the successful applicants to the course will get hands-on experience in how to make animated film from start to finish. 3Dami Summer Studio is open to students aged 13 to 18 (pre-university). It’s free and delivered online so its accessible to young people across the UK. Applications close 11 July More information: read here

A Level results 2022

Sixth Form School Day

The Learning Resources Centre (LRC) is open from 8am each morning and pupils can be dropped off at school from then.

There is a parent drop-off loop for those arriving by car accessed through the main school gates. The school buses arrive into school around 8.20-8.30am each morning and drop pupils inside the main school gates. Pupils can also cycle to school and secure bike storage is located near the science laboratories.

Pupils in the Sixth Form may also drive themselves to school. They must register their car with the school office.

The latest arrival time for pupils is 8.40am with registration and pastoral contact time starting at 8.45am. Our Sixth Form pupils are expected to be in school throughout the school day.

Morning break is at 10.30am for 25 minutes and lunch and lunchtime co-curricular activities starts at 12.35pm. We have a long lunch break at Hymers

to allow our pupils to have their lunch and also take part in all of the activities on offer. Afternoon registration beings at 1.50pm and afternoon lessons end at 4pm.

One afternoon a week is dedicated to Games for our Sixth Form pupils and our Sixth Form pupils can make use of their own dedicated common room throughout the school day.

Pupils being collected by car should be picked up from the East Car Park. The school buses depart from the same location at drop-off, just inside the school gates and staff are on hand to supervise pupils catching the correct bus.

For those not leaving school at 4pm, a number of after-school co-curricular activities are on offer and pupils can also stay in the LRC to complete homework.

Pupils must be collected by 6pm.
