#UnlockingPotential since 1893 A Level 2022

Phoebe enjoyed the community feel of the school including all the social aspects of school life. She said the teaching staff have been extremely helpful and she enjoyed all her lessons. Her highlights include being in ALL the school plays and Battle of the Bands in Year 9.

Once again Hymers students have posted a remarkable set of A Level results. 77% of all grades achieved by the Class of 2022 were A*-B. This is an outstanding achievement for a year group so impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic and a set of results significantly better than those achieved pre-pandemic.

Her advice to future students is to take advantage of every opportunity the school offers. Take yourself out of your comfort zone, you never know what new interests or hobbies you might enjoy.

What our students said...

Chris joined Hymers in Year 7 from Walkington Primary School. He achieved A* grades in Spanish and Politics and an A in History and starts at Downing College, Cambridge in October. He was encouraged by his teachers to apply for Cambridge and is looking forward to studying Arabic and Spanish. It was during lockdown he spent time learning some Arabic. This led him to decide to study it at university. Part of his degree will include spending time in the Middle East.

Diya joined Hessle Mount School in Reception and moved through to Hymers Junior and Senior Schools. She was one of the Heads of School in Year 13. Diya achieved A* in Further Maths, Biology and Chemistry plus an A* in Maths awarded in Year 12. She is now heading to study Medicine at Imperial College London.

Chris’ advice for future students is to enjoy the sense of community within the school. Fellow students and teachers are always willing to help each other out.

She played hockey right through her time at Hymers. She said that while people may worry about 7am starts for away fixtures, the bus journeys were great fun and something she will always remember! Diya met a great mix of new people who she would not have otherwise met in lessons. Diya loved being part of the music scene at Hymers. She was in orchestra, windband and the choir. Again, it was a great group of people and they were all friends outside of school. She really enjoyed the final Feast of Song concert and sharing the love of music they all have. She went on some amazing school trips including skiing and to Spain, but the best trip was to Cranedale in Year 13. This was the first post-Covid trip. Although they were apprehensive about a trip to North Yorkshire in November, Diya said it was fantastic fun and great to do practical study work. Every year in Hymers was fun in a different way; “Sixth Form was such an amazing time at Hymers”, and her advice for future students is; “Make the most of every opportunity you get”.

Chiamaka joined Hymers in Year 7 from Pearson Primary School.

A* - B

She is heading for Manchester University to study Architecture after gaining 3 A grades in Biology, Chemistry and Maths as well as an A* for her EPQ submission on the paradox of time travel. Her highlights were playing in the netball team and appreciating the learning environment when returning after lockdown. Chiamaka advises future students to join as many clubs as possible there is such a range of activities to choose from. Oscar joined Hymers in Year 5 from Hallgate Primary School in Cottingham.

Robert joined Hymers in Year 5 from Cherry Burton Primary School. He achieved an A* in Biology and Maths and an A in Physics and is heading to Durham University to study Biological Sciences. Robert thoroughly enjoyed sports at Hymers, especially hockey, cricket and tennis. He was 1st team captain in Year 13 for both hockey and tennis. The Junior School trips to Windermere and Normandy were fun and Cranedale in Year 13 if; “you didn’t mind the cold!” Robert’s advice for future students; “Get involved, there’s plenty on offer.”

Oscar achieved 4 A* in Further Maths, Maths, Physics and Biology and is planning on studying Biological Sciences at UCL. Biology has always been a subject that has held Oscar’s interest with hopes to move into research after university. Hymers offers so many opportunities especially a wide variety of co-curricular activities. A Year 9 trip to Italy was one of the highlights of Oscar’s time here. Oscar’s advice to future students would be to enjoy the welcoming environment and feeling of being part of a community. Everyone knows who you are from the brilliant teaching staff up to the Headmaster.

GCSE 2022

7 AVERAGE GRADE

9

MOST COMMON AWARDED GRADE

xx Headmaster Justin Stanley commented: xx

This year Hymers students once again celebrated receiving top GCSE results. The average grade awarded across all subjects and all pupils was a grade 7 (equivalent to an A under the old system) and the most commonly awarded grade was a grade 9, the highest grade achievable. Headmaster Justin Stanley commented: “I am so proud of all our students. After a challenging few years through the pandemic, our Year 11 students have shown true resilience and been rewarded by an excellent set of examination results. “Of course, there are some clear standout results, perhaps most notably that grade 9 is the most

commonly awarded grade. However there are also some inspiring personal stories from pupils who, over their GCSE studies, showed incredible progress and today received grades far beyond what they first hoped to achieve. “In addition to their accomplishments in the classroom, many of these young people have contributed with commitment and expertise in the wider life of the school, excelling in sport, music, drama, thereby bringing joy to the school community and enriching their own lives. I am so impressed with each and every student and the progress they have made throughout their time at Hymers.”
