I’ve just returned from a very pleasant threeweek holiday in Australia where the temperature at this time of the year hovers around the high 30-degree mark. Apart from a lot of surfing, eating good food, soaking up the sun and watching Test cricket – there’s not much else to do. What’s not to like about that? Meanwhile, back in the real world, things just get stranger and stranger. My first day back at work in 2015 saw Jimmy Lai’s house firebombed, along with the offices of Next Media. This happened the same day a Hong Kong police officer opened fire on a van attempting to steal bulk copies of Apple Daily and run him down in the process. It was also a day where Fitbit, one of the innovators in personal health, copped a load of criticism for reposting an article about chief secretary Carrie Lam wearing its wristband Fitbit Flex during a radio interview. A subsequent flame war from pro-Occupy Central users and the general public, incensed that Fitbit was in some way trying to get publicity from Lam wearing the brand’s product, ensued and resulted in Fitbit deleting the article. It’s a pretty sorry state of affairs where brands – and indeed people – are forced to be more and more cautious about what they say, who they support and their beliefs, in fear of being shot down by hundreds, and in worst cases thousands of people angry for not subscribing to their world view. Last year I reposted an article I thought was an interesting take on the psychology of expatriates in Hong Kong in the wake of Rurik Jutting, the 29-year-old investment banker accused of double murder. After a dozen or so comments massacring me for this and that, I decided to delete it and keep my opinions to myself. Where this will lead is anyone’s guess, but for now, I’m keeping my mouth shut.
