RHYS EDWARDS
DIRECTOR OF RUGBY Welcome all to Loughborough University where today we host Sheffield Tigers in another Round of National 2 North.
Sheffield come to Loughborough off the back of win against Blaydon last week and will be looking to add to their 3 wins this season. There is a lot of National league experience in the Sheffield squad led by Jamie Broadley. This week, our players and staff have reflected well on the performance at Tynedale and are looking forward to getting back out on the home track and get back to winning ways. Last Wednesday saw us have five BUCS Teams out for the first time ever, with our BUCS 5XV wining comfortably in their first every fixture. Pleasingly it was great to see so many players (110+) playing and the cherry on top being everyone picked up a win. #WinningWednesdays. This week saw the BSR Squad pick up a great win away from home at Leeds Beckett and continue our solid start to the competition. The physicality that we played with and the composure under huge pressure was a real marker for the competition and one that we can continually build on. The squad now look ahead to a tough Durham Away fixture next Wednesday before a week off. Finally, another reminder of our new Club Membership model. Thank you to all those that have already joined, please make sure
you join to access all the club have to offer. It would be great to have as many of you as Members of our club, and your support would ensure that we continue to develop the next generation of players and staff. Please contact rugby@lboro.ac.uk for more information. All the best to everyone today Rhys Director of Rugby

LOUGHBOROUGH STUDENTS HOT CONTEST AGAINST CHESTER In the 7th round of National League 2 North Loughborough Students faced off against Chester. Straight from the off you could see the ball skipped from half to half with each side testing one another. Walsh laid on some wellplaced kicks, keeping the play in Chester’s half. Loughborough’s pack laid continuous pressure on Chester’s try line, leading to Scharink opening the score board in the 4th minute, which was converted by Heard. Chester’s forwards were strong and formidable, which meant they dominated most scrums and rolling mauls.

Loughborough backs were able to overcome this though leading to Heard scoring on the 16th and 18th minute respectively. The away side were able to capitalise on some of Loughborough’s mistakes, scoring three times later in the half. Loughborough’s Parkes then scored on the 37th minute, giving the home side a one try lead going into the second half. Going into the next half Loughborough initially claimed control, pressing from the off, and remaining squarely within Chester’s half. O’Learly-Blade ended a fantastic set of phases and broke through the line, scoring in the 57th Minute. Loughborough continued to capitalise on their momentum as Shine rampaged past the away
side’s pack, widening the lead. Chester did fight back after each restart, driving the Students back, but even with an additional try being scored by Wilkinson, the away side had little chance to narrow the score. This led to a welldeserved Loughborough Students victory at home.

LOUGHBOROUGH STUDENTS RFC V SHEFFIELD TIGERS
TODAYS OPPOSITION
SHEFFIELD TIGERS Sheffield Tigers Rugby Football Club is a rugby union team based in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, England. The Club are based at Dore Moor, Hathersage Road, Sheffield where they run three senior teams and a veteran’s side, the junior section starts at under-7's up to a colts XV. Formed in 1932 Sheffield Tigers celebrated their 75th season of rugby in 2007. Since league rugby began, they have been long standing members of Yorkshire 2, managing to avoid either promotion or relegation for the first dozen or so years of the leagues. The arrival of former England and Halifax RLFC scrum half David Holmes spearheaded a new era and the club reached the final of the Tetley Bitter Vase at Twickenham in 2000, securing a 20 – 11 win over favourites Bank of England RUFC. Despite finishing second, a restructure of the leagues meant that they remained in Yorkshire 2; as all ten clubs below, them were relegated! Promotion the following year was accompanied by the club's first Yorkshire Shield win over Scarborough and the 'Tigers' stayed in Yorkshire 1 for two seasons before a disastrous campaign in 2002–03 saw them relegated back to Yorkshire 2. The arrival of Coach Richard Selkirk and a host of new players saw Tigers promoted at the second time of asking in 2004–05, a year that also saw a second Vase win at Twickenham, this time over Solihull after a
tumultuous semi-final win at Sidmouth. Further success followed in 2005–06 with the Yorkshire 1 title captured, and at their first attempt Tigers made it three promotions in a row with a play-off win over North 2 West rivals Lymm in 2006-07 to book their place in North 1 for 2007–08. Three seasons later the club gained promotion from this league, now known as National 3 North, via a play-off victory over Chester and moved into National League 2 North. And this is where the Tigers and Students last met, with the Students claiming both victories. Over the summer Sheffield Tigers Head coach Robin Hislop “Bomber” signed for Wasps and was selected for the Scotland summer training squad. Ahead of the new season Sheffield Tigers have announced new joint Head Coach partnership of George Oram and Jamie Broadley to replace the departure of Bomber.

LOUGHBOROUGH STUDENTS RFC
A BRIEF HISTORY 1984 Rex Hazeldine is appointed as Head Coach leading the side to a UAU title and victory in the Leicestershire Cup. A touring Australian Universities side was also defeated.
1976
1919
1962-68
Loughborough College formed the original Rugby Union side in September 1919.
These were spectacular years for Loughborough, winning every UAU title except 1965. Gerald Davies, John Mantle, Dave Rollit, John Taylor, Bev Risman and Colin MacFadyean, became world class players. John Robins became the first British and Irish Lions coach.
1930 Loughborough Colleges competed in their first Universities Athletic Union competition, beating Nottingham University 8-0 in their first match.
1939 Loughborough Colleges reached the UAU final for the first time, losing narrowly to Swansea.
1953 Loughborough Colleges won the UAU for the first time.
Middlesex 7s winners: 1959, 1964 1966, 1970 and 1976.
1996 Loughborough enter the leagues at the bottom of the RFU pyramid.
The Student’s Unions of the University of Technology and the Loughborough Colleges merged and the Loughborough Students Rugby Club was formed. The team won the UAU in 1977, 1978 and 1979, with the 1978–79 side captained by the young centre Clive Woodward.
19
1970 The legendary Jim Greenwood coaches the Colleges to victory in the Middlesex Sevens, and the first UAU final at Twickenham. This side was probably the strongest ever, with six future internationals, Louis Dick, David Cooke, Clive Rees, Fran Cotton, Steve Smith, and Dick Cowman.
1997 Loughborough wins over Cambridge and Oxford in consecutive weeks signals the changing balance of power in student rugby.
1998 Ian Smith is appointed as the first full-time Director of Rugby.
2003 The World Cup winning England team was coached by six Loughborough alumni: Clive Woodward, Dave Alred, Andy Robinson, Dave Reddin, Phil Larder and Simon Hardy.
2005 Winning BUCS in 2005 breaks our longest spell without a BUCS victory.
2006 Real Varsity Match v Bath. Floodlights Appeal provides campus venue for the first ever rugby ‘event’ and engages alumni leading to the Vice Presidents club. A 3000+ crowd watched Loughborough beat Bath.
2008 Director of Rugby Dave Morris leads the side to promotion into National League 2 North, making the team the first student side to take part in the National Leagues.
2009 The Dan James Memorial Match Loughborough 23 – 20 England U20 A magnificent achievement for Dave Morris’ team and a suitably characterful performance through which to remember Dan.
2012 Loughborough v The Barbarians. A huge match to mark the opening of the Loughborough Stadium. Andy Robinson’s Barbarian side win 40– 7. Loughborough promoted into National League 1.
2016 Fiji win the first Olympic 7s competition coached by Loughborough alumni Ben Ryan, defeating Team GB in the process and fellow Loughborough alumni Phil Burgess.
2017 Loughborough Lightning enter the Tyrrells Premier 15s league.
