LOUGHBOROUGH STUDENTS RFC V SEDGLEY PARK
RHYS EDWARDS
DIRECTOR OF RUGBY Welcome all to Loughborough University, where today we host League leaders Sedgley Park in another Round of National 2 North. Sedgley Park have been a dominant side this year with their physical and positive brand of rugby, and I’m sure it will be another spectacle here today. The National League is proving to be a tough league as we always expect, and great opportunity for our young players to gain invaluable experience during their rugby education. We were unfortunate not to gain the win last week against Wharfdale, with conceding a late score to lose 15-14. However, the performance was a stark contrast to the week before against Rotherham, a game where we were ‘not at the races’ uncharacteristically, and one we would normally thrive in. The weather was a contributor but well done to Rotherham who showed us the decisive way to win in this league. The BUCS Super Rugby Squad fell to Bath this week with us off the pace at the breakdown. After impressive wins the previous few weeks against Cardiff Met and Hartpury, we had a reality check in the importance of staying focused and being accurate. Well done Bath, but all eyes now turn to the final fixture of 2021 against Northumbria at Kingston Park on Friday. Finally, may I please thank Amy Walmsley, who leaves us this weekend to go and work with the RFU. Amy has been an integral piece
of the programme over the last 5 years leading our rugby operations and off field delivery. Amy will be sorely missed and will leave a big gap. If you see her around campus today, please make sure you say goodbye. Good Luck Amy. Hopefully the weather stays away, and we have fresh day to play positive rugby. All the best to everyone today Rhys Director of Rugby Any further information regarding membership, Please contact rugby@lboro.ac.uk for more information.

Students suffer chilling defeat to Titans.
Even though Loughborough’s forwards were strong and formidable, they found it challenging against the Titan’s pack and Rotherham’s Newborn scored an additional try in the 7th minute from a rolling maul. Four more tries were scored by the away side within the first half, leading to a 38 point difference going into the second half.
It was a cold, windy day at Epinal Way for our home fixture against Rotherham. Rotherham took the kick and went on the offensive and kept deep in Loughborough’s 22. The wind was blowing making for a close quarters game, and it was an offload from to Boxhall who scored under the posts for the first try, converted by Minogue.
At the restart, Loughborough were on the offensive, and tried to capitalise on any weakness by Titans. But the away side took a penalty and opted to kick to touch, and then scores on the left-hand side from a rolling maul. Boxhall scored an additional try on the 60th minute widening the score for the away side.
It wasn’t till much later in the half that Loughborough scored, with a break from Sanders through Rotherham’s defensive line in the 74th minute, following some quick phases after a line out. The Titans scored two additional tries in the last few minutes of play, but the stage was set and Rotherham Titans came out victorious.

LOUGHBOROUGH STUDENTS RFC V SEDGLEY PARK
TODAYS OPPOSITION
SEDGLEY PARK
Sedgley Park is a district of Manchester about two miles north of the city centre and here, in 1932 at a public meeting in a temperance bar the club began. The very first ground was a farmer’s field in Whitefield, and despite the primitive conditions – cowshed for changing, farmyard pump for washing – the new club thrived. A clubhouse had already been built and three regular teams were being fielded before war broke out in 1939. Sedgley Park survived the war years, and a difficult period afterwards when the club lost their rented ground. For two years all games were played away, with barely enough playing members for two teams, until in 1955 the Club moved to its present site, with an immediate and spectacular improvement in playing standards. When the Courage Leagues began in 1987 Sedgley Park had progressed far enough to be placed in North West 2 (level 8), from which they gained promotion at the first attempt. The Club remained in North West 1 for seven years; meanwhile, the club was expanding in other directions with a huge increase in quantity and quality at the agegroup level of the game. When the game went ‘open’ in the middle nineties, Sedgley Park was ready for the next leap forward. Promotion was achieved three years in succession; the clubhouse was extended; the two pitches became one, now in excellent condition, with floodlights and terracing.
A newly purchased field, just across the road, provided three more much needed pitches and floodlit training. Another promotion, in 2001, took Sedgley Park to National League Two, level 3 of the English game. The Club now had a stand from which to watch their heroes and they responded by attaining League One status in 2004, the 6th promotion since 1987. Surviving at level 2 for several years, enjoying fixtures against the likes of Harlequins and Northampton, the Club were hanging on to compete on the field with clubs whose playing budgets were much larger than ours could ever hope to be. It came as a relief, though tinged with disappointment, when a league reorganisation took the Club down to level 3 again for the 2009-10 season. The 2012-13 season saw Sedgley Park and the Students meet for the first time in National League 1 where there were two resounding victories for the Students; the season ended with Sedgley Park relegated to National 2 North where they have remained. Today the club is coached by Scott Barrow, he is joined alongside Jonny Rodham, Dave Livesey and Steve Hazzleby and the club is managed by Geoff Roberts. Sedgley Park have had a strong start to the season and currently sit 2nd in the table. It will be another tough test for the Students this weekend as they go up against a top side.

A BRIEF HISTORY 1984 Rex Hazeldine is appointed as Head Coach leading the side to a UAU title and victory in the Leicestershire Cup. A touring Australian Universities side was also defeated.
1976
1919
1962-68
Loughborough College formed the original Rugby Union side in September 1919.
These were spectacular years for Loughborough, winning every UAU title except 1965. Gerald Davies, John Mantle, Dave Rollit, John Taylor, Bev Risman and Colin MacFadyean, became world class players. John Robins became the first British and Irish Lions coach.
1930 Loughborough Colleges competed in their first Universities Athletic Union competition, beating Nottingham University 8-0 in their first match.
1939 Loughborough Colleges reached the UAU final for the first time, losing narrowly to Swansea.
1953 Loughborough Colleges won the UAU for the first time.
Middlesex 7s winners: 1959, 1964 1966, 1970 and 1976.
1996 Loughborough enter the leagues at the bottom of the RFU pyramid.
The Student’s Unions of the University of Technology and the Loughborough Colleges merged and the Loughborough Students Rugby Club was formed. The team won the UAU in 1977, 1978 and 1979, with the 1978–79 side captained by the young centre Clive Woodward.
17
1970 The legendary Jim Greenwood coaches the Colleges to victory in the Middlesex Sevens, and the first UAU final at Twickenham. This side was probably the strongest ever, with six future internationals, Louis Dick, David Cooke, Clive Rees, Fran Cotton, Steve Smith, and Dick Cowman.
1997 Loughborough wins over Cambridge and Oxford in consecutive weeks signals the changing balance of power in student rugby.
1998 Ian Smith is appointed as the first full-time Director of Rugby.
2003 The World Cup winning England team was coached by six Loughborough alumni: Clive Woodward, Dave Alred, Andy Robinson, Dave Reddin, Phil Larder and Simon Hardy.
2005 Winning BUCS in 2005 breaks our longest spell without a BUCS victory.
2006 Real Varsity Match v Bath. Floodlights Appeal provides campus venue for the first ever rugby ‘event’ and engages alumni leading to the Vice Presidents club. A 3000+ crowd watched Loughborough beat Bath.
2008 Director of Rugby Dave Morris leads the side to promotion into National League 2 North, making the team the first student side to take part in the National Leagues.
2009 The Dan James Memorial Match Loughborough 23 – 20 England U20 A magnificent achievement for Dave Morris’ team and a suitably characterful performance through which to remember Dan.
2012 Loughborough v The Barbarians. A huge match to mark the opening of the Loughborough Stadium. Andy Robinson’s Barbarian side win 40– 7. Loughborough promoted into National League 1.
2016 Fiji win the first Olympic 7s competition coached by Loughborough alumni Ben Ryan, defeating Team GB in the process and fellow Loughborough alumni Phil Burgess.
2017 Loughborough Lightning enter the Tyrrells Premier 15s league.
