DIRECTOR OF RUGBY Welcome all to Loughborough University for another Allianz Premier 15s Fixture. This week has been a testing time with COVID becoming prevalent again with the new strain, and we have all been on high alert. I am pleased that we are playing today but we all need to be cautions and safe. Today’s match sees us host Bristol Bears, who have been in scintillating form this year, and shown they are a real challenge across the league. The players have responded well to Dave Ward and his staff, and I’m sure today won’t be any different in the challenge. Bristol come having won a nail biter at Worcester last week, and will be looking to sign off for Christmas with another win. We, however are keen to continue our momentum with 2 good wins against Gloucester and Sale Sharks. The squad are in a good place and are excited at playing, in what I’m sure will be a great game. Last weeks fixture was pleasing for a number of reasons. We were home for the fist time in a while, we were able to play our brand of rugby. It was great to see Emil Scarratt’s influence with the backs shine through with another wonder try by Helena Rowland, and Lark Davies ruling the maul. I’m personally pleased to back in for the game after my COVID hiatus, but would like on record to say what a great job Brad Jones and the team have done in my break. This programme isn’t just about developing players, but also our staff as well.

Bristol Bears Women is a topflight women’s rugby club that competes in the Allianz Premier 15s. Bristol Bears Women employ a high calibre of coaching staff, which is led by newly appointed Head Coach, Dave Ward. The club have developed a close affinity to the men’s programme in recent years working closely with Director of Rugby, Pat Lam on a shared club vision and philosophy to align the two clubs. The alignment between the two programmes has been enhanced by Bears Women’s move to the High-Performance Centre, which will see both the men’s, women’s and academy programme share best practice from a coaching, medical and athletic performance standpoint. The squad boasts a wealth of talent ranging from international stars that have represented England and Wales, Olympic
and Commonwealth Games representatives, age-range internationals as well as BUCS champions, through to a development squad of talented individuals from across the Southwest. Players are not only Bristol based, but travel from Exeter, Gloucester, Wales and Swindon to represent Bristol Bears Women. Bristol Bears Women also strives to help nurture and develop the wealth of rugby talent across the Southwest through strong partnerships with the University of Bristol, Richard Huish College, SGS College and Weston College. So far this season Bristol Bear have been enjoying great success in league and come to Loughborough top of the league table.
