LOUGHBOROUGH LIGHTNING V DMP DURHAM SHARKS
RHYS EDWARDS
DIRECTOR OF RUGBY Welcome all to Loughborough University for another Allianz Premier 15s Fixture. This week we welcome DMP Durham Sharks to the University in Round 12 of the AP15s. DMP have a long history within the women’s game having produced a number of Red Roses, in particular former Lightning player and England legend Katy Daley McLean. This season has been a difficult season for them amid transition, but I am confident that they will manage their way out and become a force of old. We head in this game full of confidence following our win away at Wasps. The first half in particular was impressive, with our tempo and accuracy too good for wasps. We did however take our foot off the accelerator and allowed Wasps to come back into the game, before finishing strongly. Any win against Wasps is good but to do it as comfortable as we did was very pleasing. The challenge now is to back that up this week and ensure that we are accurate and consistent. Last week saw us introduce some new faces. It is with great pleasure that we welcome USA Internationals Bulou (Mataitoga) and Hallie (Taufoou) to the Loughborough family, with both becoming #099 and #100 respectively, in terms of heritage numbers. We have also this week managed to secure the return of Lightning stalwart Carys Williams after a spell at Wasps. To have the quality of these players available is great for the squad and ensure that we continually build towards the end of the season. Good luck also goes to both Abbie Brown and
Georgina Tasker this weekend who both play for England 7s in the World Series. Abbie cocaptain’s the squad, with Georgina having her first taste of senior international 7s. Go well both. We hope that you enjoy today and please come say hello post game in JCs bar.

A quick tap from Sammy Wong and speedy dash towards the line set Emily Stone up to score the final try of the game diving over in the corner
Wasps Women fought to the line with a second half comeback, but it was Lightning’s thunder that stole the show. Loughborough made their mark in the first half scoring five tries. Their first came 15 minutes in, getting the ball wide to Bo Westcombe Evans to score on the wing. This set off a string of tries, the second from their no. six Sara Svoboda and minutes later a third from Georgie Lingham. Lingham went on to score again, taking the opposition’s total to 24 points with 10 minutes left in the half. It was Maud Muir who broke the storm, calling for the ball wide to crash through Loughborough’s defense and score to bring Wasps into the game. With minutes left in the half, Loughborough sent it wide from a lineout in Wasps 22m leaving Helena Rowland to bring it back in and score under the posts. However it was Wasps that had the last say

with a stunner from Abby Dow. Spotting the space in behind Lightning’s defense, Dow chipped the ball over the top and chased it down herself to score in the corner. Determined to stay ahead, it was Lightning who kicked off the second half with their no. 6 Svoboda scoring her second try of the game. Former Wasp, Sadia Kabeya, set Loughborough up, securing a turnover and giving Loughborough a line out from which Courtney Holtkamp scored their final try. It was Wasps who dominated the final quarter of the game with an injection of fire from the likes of Combebias, Cleall and Balogun. Heather Kerr added to the scoreboard, peeling off a Wasps maul to score after a penalty line out. Cleall scoring her first Premier 15s conversion to add the extras.

DMP DURHAM SHARKS Darlington Mowden Park Sharks were founded in 1996 in Ripon and later moved to Thirsk in North Yorkshire where it was known as Thirsk RFC. The club then moved to Darlington in 2006 and became affiliated to Darlington Mowden Park and changed its name accordingly. In 2009, Darlington Mowden Park Sharks were promoted from Championship 1 North to the Women’s Premiership after finishing top of the table. They then defeated Championship 1 South team Bath Rugby Ladies in extra time in the playoffs in order to be promoted. The club used to play their home matches at Yiewsley Drive but in 2012 they purchased The Northern Echo Arena after Darlington F.C. went out of business
and play here alongside Darlington Mowden Park’s men’s team as well as their mini and junior sides. Darlington Mowden Park RFC is one of the largest rugby clubs in the North East of England and runs over 20 amateur sides across both genders, starting as young as U6s all the way through to veteran sides. During the 2016/17 season the Sharks launched a development squad for the first time which provided younger players in the with the opportunity to gain experience ahead of the inaugural Tyrrells Premier 15s league. The club finished in ninth place in the first season and Eighth in 2018/2019.
