RHYS EDWARDS
DIRECTOR OF RUGBY Welcome all to Loughborough University, where today we host Tynedale in another Round of National 2 North. We welcome all players and officials from the club, in what we hope will be another great game of National League Rugby The last few games have been challenging and the results certainly haven’t showed the true competitiveness of the games, with us unfortunately coming on the wrong side of a few close games. Today’s opposition, Tynedale come with a similar record to us, and will be, I’m sure looking to continue their recent form with another win. Having beaten Chester and Huddersfield in their last two outings, they will be a tough, physical opposition. Middle of the table is looking very competitive and is very close. As we head into the final quarter of the league season, every point will matter. Last week’s game against Chester was a frustrating one, with us having a particularly slow start, however as we got ourselves into the game and improved our accuracy, we got ourselves back into the game, but left it too late to win the game. Preparation this week has gone well, and we are looking forward to being back at home and on the crumb, in front of our home supporters. The BUCS Super Rugby squad played in the Varsity this week against Exeter University at Sandy Park. It was a great occasion, and advert for Student rugby with 4000+ supporters creating an atmosphere akin to a Gallagher Premiership game. It was a very attractional game, which swung a number times, with us unfortunately losing 26 – 21. We had control of the game in the 2nd half
however our discipline cost us dearly. Next week the squad head to Swansea for another tough away game, with Swansea on a 2-game winning streak. Back to today, I hope the weather stays of and we have great afternoon of rugby. All the best to everyone today Rhys Director of Rugby

With a two try gap, Loughborough struggled to content with Hull’s pace, which saw multiple breakthroughs on the home sides’ defensive line. The first half ended with Crane scoring an unconverted try from a rolling maul, giving hull a three point lead. At the restart Loughborough looked posed to retaliate with vengeance, with their back’s looking mobilised and organised in attack. Unfortunately, Hull were able to keep Loughborough’s Pack on the back foot and gained an additional try on the 47th

Trueman was able to score an additional try from another breakdown, but due to wind was unconverted. Both replacements Harding and Boothman gained a try of their own each in the closing few minutes of play.

LOUGHBOROUGH STUDENTS RFC V TYNEDALE
TODAYS OPPOSITION
TYNEDALE Tynedale RFC is a rugby union team based in Corbridge, Northumberland in North East England. The Club began almost by accident, following the arrival in Hexham of a letter addressed to the "Captain of the Hexham Football Club". There being no-one in the town answering to that title, a group of people decided it was high time there was. On 11th October 1876, a meeting was called in Hexham Town Hall at which Tynedale Football Club was duly formed and a captain, officials and committee appointed. The Northumberland Senior Shield victory of 1904 heralded the dawn of a "Golden Age" at the club, now officially called Tynedale Rugby Football Club. During the decade up to the outbreak of the First World War Tynedale won no fewer than 15 trophies, including the Senior Cup on three occasions and the Senior Shield four times in a row between 1909 and 1912. It was a run of success which, during this period, saw a score of Tynedale players being honoured by selection for their respective counties.
From 2012 the club's playing resources were pushed to the limit and after flirting with relegation for 3 successive years the club was eventually relegated into National 2(North) at the end of 20142015. In March, Tynedale welcomed former Scottish International fly half, Richard Cramp, as Chair of Rugby for the Club. Richard represented Tynedale for four seasons between 1996 and 2000, playing 95 matches and scoring 294 points (including 18 tries and 24 drop goals). Upon retirement from playing Richard coached throughout the age groups at Tynedale as well as with the Colts. It's been an exciting summer for the club as former player Chris Harris got selected for the British and Irish Lions tour in South Africa and started the second test match for the Lions. Also, former Tynedale player Jamie Blamire got his first call up to the England squad in the summer of 2021 and made his first start against Canada resulting in a final score of 70 – 14 to England

A BRIEF HISTORY 1984 Rex Hazeldine is appointed as Head Coach leading the side to a UAU title and victory in the Leicestershire Cup. A touring Australian Universities side was also defeated.
1976
1919
1962-68
Loughborough College formed the original Rugby Union side in September 1919.
These were spectacular years for Loughborough, winning every UAU title except 1965. Gerald Davies, John Mantle, Dave Rollit, John Taylor, Bev Risman and Colin MacFadyean, became world class players. John Robins became the first British and Irish Lions coach.
1930 Loughborough Colleges competed in their first Universities Athletic Union competition, beating Nottingham University 8-0 in their first match.
1939 Loughborough Colleges reached the UAU final for the first time, losing narrowly to Swansea.
1953 Loughborough Colleges won the UAU for the first time.
Middlesex 7s winners: 1959, 1964 1966, 1970 and 1976.
1996 Loughborough enter the leagues at the bottom of the RFU pyramid.
The Student’s Unions of the University of Technology and the Loughborough Colleges merged and the Loughborough Students Rugby Club was formed. The team won the UAU in 1977, 1978 and 1979, with the 1978–79 side captained by the young centre Clive Woodward.
17
1970 The legendary Jim Greenwood coaches the Colleges to victory in the Middlesex Sevens, and the first UAU final at Twickenham. This side was probably the strongest ever, with six future internationals, Louis Dick, David Cooke, Clive Rees, Fran Cotton, Steve Smith, and Dick Cowman.
1997 Loughborough wins over Cambridge and Oxford in consecutive weeks signals the changing balance of power in student rugby.
1998 Ian Smith is appointed as the first full-time Director of Rugby.
2003 The World Cup winning England team was coached by six Loughborough alumni: Clive Woodward, Dave Alred, Andy Robinson, Dave Reddin, Phil Larder and Simon Hardy.
2005 Winning BUCS in 2005 breaks our longest spell without a BUCS victory.
2006 Real Varsity Match v Bath. Floodlights Appeal provides campus venue for the first ever rugby ‘event’ and engages alumni leading to the Vice Presidents club. A 3000+ crowd watched Loughborough beat Bath.
2008 Director of Rugby Dave Morris leads the side to promotion into National League 2 North, making the team the first student side to take part in the National Leagues.
2009 The Dan James Memorial Match Loughborough 23 – 20 England U20 A magnificent achievement for Dave Morris’ team and a suitably characterful performance through which to remember Dan.
2012 Loughborough v The Barbarians. A huge match to mark the opening of the Loughborough Stadium. Andy Robinson’s Barbarian side win 40– 7. Loughborough promoted into National League 1.
2016 Fiji win the first Olympic 7s competition coached by Loughborough alumni Ben Ryan, defeating Team GB in the process and fellow Loughborough alumni Phil Burgess.
2017 Loughborough Lightning enter the Tyrrells Premier 15s league.
