ISSY MATRIN
HEAD COACH Firstly, a warm Loughborough welcome to our visitors Wolves today. It’s been a rollercoaster of a few weeks. The highs of winning BUCS championship 10-0 against (normally) close rivals Northumbria, a fantastic weekend away with the squad gaining a vital 3 points away at Middlesbrough where the team fought their hearts out to the death of the game. But then the lows of the stoke game going from 2-1 up at half time to losing the game 4-2. The group have done tremendously well since post Christmas ... we have a tough tough battle ahead to stay in tier 3, we know on our day we can beat anyone in the league, so we need to make sure we are in the right frame of mind, have the belief and trust in ourselves over the next 4 weeks. Issy Martin Head Coach

CAPTAIN After 2 weeks away from home we are glad to be back at the stadium. Following the wolves game, we felt we didn’t give an account of ourselves that reflects how far we’ve come as a group. We had to pick ourselves up quickly for the long journey to Middlesbrough which was a must win game for both teams. We dominated that game, creating chances, playing the better football and showing composure that our opponents lacked. The difference between the sides was vast and we came away with a deserving 3 points. Stoke was another big game, we battled well to be 2-1 up in the first half but after a few quick fire goals we found ourselves behind with not much time left. We’ve looked at what went wrong and have a togetherness to put things right this week against Burnley. We know there will be a physical battle and they come to us sitting mid table and having had some good results themselves in previous weeks. We’re in a position in the table that we don’t feel reflects us and today gives us a great opportunity to prove it.
We have 5 cup finals left of this season, time to gather momentum going in to what will be a crucial few weeks for this club.

BURNLEY
Burnley FC Women is the official women’s team of Burnley Football Club. From its inception in 1995 until 2018 it was known as Burnley FC Girls and Ladies. The team currently competes in the Northern Premier Division of the FA Women’s National League. The club and junior teams played in the local Lancashire Leagues for many years, before joining the Northwest Women’s Regional League. In 2016, the management and operation of the club was transferred to Burnley FC in the Community, with Manager Matt Bee taking the reins. The following season, in the 2017-18 FA Women’s Cup, the team won three preliminary round games to qualify for the first-round proper for the first time in their history. Burnley reached the third round, where they were eliminated by thirdtier side Cardiff City. Burnley were promoted to the Division One North of the FA Women’s National League at
the end of the same season. In 2018, the club was rebranded as Burnley FC Women. In the 2018-19 season, the team won the league title, celebrating back-toback promotions, and were promoted to the Northern Premier Division of the FA Women’s National League, the third tier in English women’s football. The following two seasons were curtailed early due to the Covid-19 pandemic. However, the side enjoyed a positive run in the Women’s FA Cup in early 2021 reaching the fourth round, the furthest stage they had ever reached in the prestigious competition, following wins against league rivals Fylde Women FC and Sunderland AFC Ladies, to face Manchester United Women of the Women’s Super League. In February 2021, it was announced that the women’s team would be integrated into Burnley FC, as the club’s new American owner Alan Pace sought to turn the women’s team professional.

A BRIEF HISTORY
LOUGHBOROUGH FOXES Gail and Paul Fox founded Loughborough Foxes in 1999, known then as Shepshed Foxes until 2002. For their first 15 years, Foxes played in local leagues, before being promoted to the FA Women’s Northern Premier Division (the 3rd ranked tier of women’s football) in 2015. After the first season they suffered relegation but managed a promotion in 2018 to return to this tier. Winning this Midlands Division One title was actually a club record for Foxes, winning 22 games and drawing just 1.
LOUGHBOROUGH UNIVERSITY PERFORMANCE TEAM Loughborough Students Women’s Football Club offers many competitive opportunities. The performance team compete in the British Universities & Colleges Sports (BUCS) Northern Premier League. When possible, players are also supported to play “external football” alongside the programme, most notably with our partner Loughborough Foxes (Tier 3), but also other Tier 3 and Championship clubs. Each year Loughborough University invests a million pounds in performance sport, and a million pounds in facilities. Thanks to this investment, Director of Football Richard Allen is able to lead a professional programme of coaching and support.
As a first team performance squad member you will receive expert coaching, access to our world class facilities, heavily discounted Powerbase gym membership, strength and conditioning training, nutrition, sports science and sports medicine support. Within the programme players also have access to Performance Lifestyle support and our top athletes can apply for scholarships.

MERGING/ LIGHTNING LAUNCH The University’s performance team and the Loughborough Foxes have officially combined to launch a new Lightning programme that will compete nationally against some of the biggest names in the sport. The clubs have worked in close collaboration for a number of years now with Head Coach Issy Martin overseeing both programmes since her appointment at the University in September 2019.
Lightning will compete in the FA Northern Premier League where it will face teams including Burnley, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Nottingham Forest, and West Bromwich Albion.

IN LOVING MEMORY OF
RIA MELVIN
It is fantastic that Loughborough Lightning will today be donating the gate sales to Brain Tumour Research a charity close to mine and the football clubs heart. Ria Melvin graduated in 2018 and was a big member of the football club competing in BUCS and Sunday football during her 4 years of study. Unexpectedly, after graduating Ria, aged 23 was diagnosed with a Glioblastoma Grade 4 Brain Tumour. After 2 years 7 months of battling the cancer, undergoing 2 major brain surgeries, chemotherapy, radiotherapy and private immunotherapy in Germany her life was taken at the age of 25. Ria was nothing but positive throughout her fight and did everything with a smile on her
face despite the challenges that she faced. Unfortunately Brain tumour research receives less than 1% of national funding despite accounting for most occurrences of cancer in the under 40’s including the recent loss of Tom Parker to the same brain tumour Ria faced. This year in October I will be running the London marathon in Ria’s memory, alongside 2 half marathons, jumping out of a plane and a 150 mile bike ride to raise as much as I can to help fund the vital research that is needed. Please see the fundraising pages below for more details about the challenges and to see the latest updates on our training. -Sofie Armitage
