RHYS EDWARDS

DIRECTOR OF RUGBY Welcome all back to the Cinch Stadium at Franklins Gardens, for what is another special moment for us a team. Today we play our 2nd Premier 15s fixture here in our first standalone fixture. The last time we played here was following the men’s Gallagher Premiership fixture against Sale in February where we beat a strong Exeter Chiefs team who will be looking at chasing the title in June. This was a great experience and something that we have been looking forward to replicating ever since. This season has been a rollercoaster of results and emotions. I’m am incredibly proud of everyone’s effort and ambition to improve this year, from the players to all of the staff. We have an incredibly unique club, that has provided an opportunity for players and staff alike to develop and maximise their ability. After a difficult start, we have managed to re-establish ourselves in league contention with an impressive run. However, our momentum was stunted with two draws in a row in Rounds 15 and 16 against Gloucester and Bristol respectively. Last weekend, we sealed our fate of not making a top 4 finish, with a disappointing loss to Worcester. We were in complete control in the first half, and heading for a bonus point win, which we needed to stay in the hunt, but this inevitably was to be to no avail as Harlequins beat Bristol which wouldn’t enable us to catch them. Today’s game itself is set up for a thriller, with us both chasing a different outcome. Harlequins, the visitors need to win with a bonus point to claim a home semi-final, also reliant on Exeter Chiefs not getting more than

2 point from their fixture against Bristol. We however need a bonus point win to finish 6th in the league. We are excited to play here again, and the support that we have had from Northampton Saints has been hugely appreciative. We aim to finish on a high and give you all a spectacle in the sun Thanks again for all your support today. We hope that you all enjoy this occasion. Rhys Edwards Director of Rugby

QUICK FIRE QUESTIONS WITH

EMILY SCARRATT AND HELEN NELSON After record breaking crowds in the Six Nations are you excited at the prospect of a potential record crowd for a Lightning game this Saturday?

Emily: Yes, massively. Could be really exciting obviously I think the Six Nations showed appetite for the women’s game at the moment and we’ve got an awesome opportunity obviously at domestic level to go out to a big stadium and hopefully get our people there to keep that momentum.

Obviously you were aw ay on international duty las t time we played at Cinch sta dium at Franklins Gardens are you excited to get your first run ou t there? Helen: Yes, I’m really excited excited to play there the girls talked about it last time and they said the atomsphere was absoultetly great and the pitch as well to play on.

Who in the squad will enjoy the limelight of a big game the most? Helen: I think I’ve got to say Eloise Hayward on that one, everyone knows that she likes a little bit of a crowd, it brings her swagger out.

LOUGHBOROUGH LIGHTNING V HARLEQUINS

How much of an impact can of big e? home crowd have on performanc

Helen: Yes, I think it has a massive impact. Just having that buzz anywhere there is a line break or when a big tackle is put in, you get that roar from a home crowd, it really fills us with confidence and makes us want to go out and play well. Are there any England team mates your are partica lly excitied to play agaisnt this we ekend?

Will your match day prep be any different with the game being at Cinch stadium Franklins Gardens? Emily: I don’t think so, obviously just leave the house a little bit earlier but that’s about it. Yeah, I think all things like that are pretty similar no matter where you are. Obviously if you’ve got a bus journey things are slightly different but making sure you got the timings of your food and stuff right but yeah should be pretty cool.

Emily: I don’t know whether you would say excited to play against. Maybe excited to see some of them and catch up. Obviously they’ve got a wealth of talent over there, haven’t they. There’s lots of England Internationals and other Internationls so its going to be a really tough game. So excited to see them but maybe not played agaisnt them.

HARLEQUINS

Harlequins is one of the oldest and most famous rugby clubs in the world. Founded in 1866, the club is a founder member of the RFU and is famous for its quartered shirt. Harlequins has over 230 community clubs and schools affiliated locally to The Stoop, its home of over 50 years in south-west London, as well as a further eight across the world. On a playing front, Harlequins has developed successful academies and regularly provides players for international representational honours. In 2016, during Harlequins 150th anniversary year, the club announced that it would significantly grow its involvement in the women’s format of the game. Developing women’s rugby is a key element of Harlequins’ strategy which also focuses on growing the number of participants through an established pathway from grassroots to elite level. In delivering the programme, Harlequins confirmed a new partnership with Aylesford Bulls Ladies. Under the stewardship of co-head

coaches Gary Street and Karen Findlay, Aylesford Bulls secured a league and cup double, before the inauguration of the Tyrrells Premier 15s competition. During the 2017 Women’s Rugby World Cup, nine Harlequins represented their countries throughout the tournament. In the first season of the new league, Quins reached the final of the competition but were beaten 24-20 by Saracens Women at Trailfinders Sports Ground, also losing to Saracens the following year.
