This week I’m sure will be another tough contest, Bristol have proved to be our nemesis at times. Last season provided two great games with us wining a close fought contest at home and drawing away in a high scoring game.
We have learnt a lot since then, and with a new crop of young aspirational players, I am certain we will have another excellent AP15s Cup game here at Loughborough. Bristol will be keen to continue their winning start following two big wins already against Sale Sharks & Saracens. We certainly won’t underestimate them as they still have some world class players playing and are coached well since Dave Ward has taken over
Lightning are keen to continue their winning start, especially having had a long break since Wasps. Great to see Jess Panayiotou makes her first appearance this weekend, our link with Loughborough Town is continually to grow with many players having opportunities in the Cup period.
Finally good luck to all our Lightning players out at the World Cup, its fantastic to have such a big representation out there. Scotland will be looking to beat Australia, following a close loss to Wales in Round 1. England, who look in good shape, play the biggest fixture of the Group stages against France. Sarah Hunter also makes her 137th appearance for the Red Roses equalling Rocky Clarks record. Congratulations Sarah
Thanks again for all your support today. We hope that you all enjoy this occasion.

Loughborough Lightning secured a 47-17 victory against Wasps on Saturday in the first round of the Allianz Cup. A Bo Westcombe-Evans hattrick, alongside trys from Danni Allen, Molly Lithuyi, Daisy Hibbert-Jones and Grace Clifford helped Lightning to their dominant win at Twyford Avenue Sports Ground, while two trys from Liz Crake and a Flo Williams penalty made up Wasps’ total.
Wasps opened the scoring in the fifteenth minute through the boot of Williams but it was Lightning who crossed the line first when Allen ran the ball in after some tidy link-up play from the visiting side, with Emma Hardy adding the extras in the start of a strong performance from the tee. Lightning’s second came just two minutes later when Westcombe-Evans touched down behind
the posts and a third from Lithuyi just before the break sent Lightning into the second half with a 21-3 lead.
Lightning came out into the second half firing and scored two within the first two minutes though Hibbert-Jones and Westcombe-Evans. However, Wasps were able to regroup, with Crake scoring in the corner from a driving maul shortly after. After a period of pressure, Clifford powered over for Lightning’s fifth with 15 minutes left on the clock. Wasps continued to push for a score and were rewarded with a second from Crake in the 77th minute but a third try from Westcombe-Evans with two minutes to go secured the victory for Lightning in a sucessful start to their Allianz Cup campaign.
By Bethan ClargoBristol Ladies were founded as Clifton Ladies RFC in 1984. In 2002, still as Clifton Ladies RFC, they won the RFUW Rugby World National Cup Final at Franklin’s Gardens. In 2007, they were promoted to the Premiership and played one more season as Clifton Ladies RFC, before affiliating to Bristol Rugby. In 2012, they moved from their shared facilities with Dings Crusaders RFC, becoming the first women’s rugby club to own their own facilities. The club now train and play home fixtures at Cleve RFC, a new home for this season.
The club have developed a close affinity to the men’s programme in recent years working closely with Director of Rugby, Pat Lam on a shared club vision and philosophy to align the two clubs. The alignment between the two programmes has been enhanced by Bears Women’s move to the
High Performance Centre, which will see both the men’s, women’s and academy programme share best practice from a coaching, medical and athletic performance standpoint.
The first XV have consistently retained their top flight place alongside some of the best clubs in the country, and this summer reached the final of the inaugural Women’s Premiership 7s competition at the Ricoh Arena, broadcast live on BT Sport.
Players are not only Bristol based, but travel from Exeter, Gloucester, Wales and Swindon to play for Bristol Ladies. The squad boasts a wealth of talent ranging from international stars that have represented England and Wales, Olympic and Commonwealth Games representatives, age-range internationals as well as BUCS champions.
