REBECCA SAWIUK DIRECTOR OF FOOTBALL
I would like to extend a warm welcome to all from Stoke City Women. In the early stages of my own career, I spent a number of years working for Stoke City alongside some of the staff who remain at the club today. Club custodians such as Kath who have given the best part of life to the development of the women’s club and youth development pathway. It will also be a real honour for me to stand in the dugout and share this space with Lou Roberts today an excellent coach and dear friend. To all of the players, staff, directors and fans at Stoke I hope you all have a great experience with us today.
Last time out in the cup our team put in an excellent display against Sheffield FC Women, we were brave with and without the ball and put in a performance for the fans. We will be striving to replicate much of that good work today. As a collective this competition means a lot to us, we enjoy playing in it and we want to stay in this competition for as long as we can. We know the match today will present a very different challenge, Stoke will be coming into the game as favourites with much of the pressure on them. I anticipate a game full of energy, hard work and hopefully a real showcase for the women’s game.
We are looking to bounce back from a hard loss against Liverpool Feds last time out. This week we couldn’t wait to get back on the training pitch, analyse, work hard and start to look to right the wrongs of our last performance. This squad has a huge amount of talent, strength and togetherness. We will need all of these attributes today to get the result. Nothing in today’s game will be given, it will need to be earnt by both teams. What I can guarantee today is we will go into this game together, play for each other and leave it all out on the pitch. The players have been bright and focused this
week, they are a really close group with a desire to go out and deliver in big moments.
Since Issy Martins departure, Kevin Lock has stepped into the Head Coach role of BUCS 1s and it has been a pleasure to work a lot closer with him. I wanted to take this opportunity to take him for taking on this additional responsibility for the University. Last week the BUCS 1s finished 2-2 at home to Durham and on Wednesday we travelled away to Northumbria and the game finished ?-?. Our club chair Imy has been doing a fantastic role this season to develop and lead on our BUCS pathway and I also want to thank her for going above and beyond in her current role.
Rebecca Sawiuk Director of Football Hello and welcome to the Loughborough University stadium for our second-round tie in the Vitality FA Cup.WELCOME FROM CAPTAIN
KAYLEIGH HINES
A huge welcome to the Loughborough University Stadium and the place we’re fortunate enough to call home. Firstly, I’d like to take the opportunity to thank you all for your support so far, whether that be pitch side home and away or your following of Lightning Football. It certainly doesn’t go unnoticed and means everything to the players and staff.
With that being said and looking at our season so far, we’re not shying away from our current position in the table and that simply not being good enough by our own standards. Football is a results-driven business and we as a collective are responsible and accountable for turning good performances into points on the board.
With the ability and character we have across the squad, coupled with recent performances, I have every belief in this group that we will start to see that transpire into results on the pitch. Every game is a battle and every advantage has to be earned, and the biggest tribute I can pay this team is our grit and determination to embrace the challenge.
Although I am fairly new around the place, I love hearing the stories of last season and previous seasons and ultimately how all of those moments have shaped the legacy that is Lightning Football today. What a story so far and how exciting that we all have the opportunity, to continue to write that –starting with making the 2022/23 season a great one.

TODAYS OPPOSITION STOKE CITY FC
A women’s team representing Stoke City was formed in the summer of 2001.
The inaugural season in the West Midlands League Division One ended in success as the team- who were known as Stoke City Ladies for their first 18 years in existence- finished third in the table and gained promotion via the play-offs.
From there they consolidated their position in the West Midland Premier Division and began entering the Staffordshire County Ladies Challenge Cup.
A first final was reached in 2007, which they won, and they have now lifted the trophy 15 times.
Promotion to the Midland Women’s Combination was secured in 2009 as the team finished as Champions, whilst an historic treble was earned in 2013 with the Ladies scooping the league championship, League Cup and County Cup.
That title saw the Ladies promoted to the FA Women’s Premier League (North)
Currently led by Head Coach Warren Holmes, the team moved to their new home at Community Drive in the summer of 2016 and the Club continues to make positive strides both on and off the pitch.

LOUGHBOROUGH FOXES
Gail and Paul Fox founded Loughborough Foxes in 1999, known then as Shepshed Foxes until 2002.
For their first 15 years, Foxes played in local leagues, before being promoted to the FA Women’s Northern Premier Division (the 3rd ranked tier of women’s football) in 2015. After the first season they suffered relegation but managed a promotion in 2018 to return to this tier. Winning this Midlands Division One title was actually a club record for Foxes, winning 22 games and drawing just 1.
LOUGHBOROUGH UNIVERSITY PERFORMANCE TEAM
Loughborough Students Women’s Football Club offers many competitive opportunities. The performance team compete in the British Universities & Colleges Sports (BUCS) Northern Premier League. When possible, players are also supported to play “external football” alongside the programme, most notably with our partner Loughborough Foxes (Tier 3), but also other Tier 3 and Championship clubs.
Each year Loughborough University invests a million pounds in performance sport, and a million pounds in facilities. Thanks to this investment, Director of Football Richard Allen is able to lead a professional programme of coaching and support.
As a first team performance squad member you will receive expert coaching, access
to our world class facilities, heavily discounted Powerbase gym membership, strength and conditioning training, nutrition, sports science and sports medicine support. Within the programme players also have access to Performance Lifestyle support and our top athletes can apply for scholarships.
MERGING/ LIGHTNING LAUNCH
The University’s performance team and the Loughborough Foxes have officially combined to launch a new Lightning programme that will compete nationally against some of the biggest names in the sport.
The clubs have worked in close collaboration for a number of years now with Head Coach Issy Martin overseeing both programmes since her appointment at the University in September 2019.
Lightning will compete in the FA Northern Premier League where it will face teams including Burnley, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Nottingham Forest, and West Bromwich Albion.
2021/22 SEASON
The first season 2021/22 as Loughborough Lightning in the FA Women’s National League ended in a 10th place finish, narrowly avoiding relegation. It was a tough start up until Christmas where the team only picked up a total of 4 points ahead of the break. Following Christmas, the team found their form and produced some fantastic performances and results to ensure they retained their Tier 3 status for the 2022/23 season, finishing on a total of 23 points. Looking ahead to the upcoming season, the team have made some key signings over the summer to develop the squad as well as welcoming to the programme, Director of Football, Rebecca Sawiuk
