RHYS
EDWARDS
DIRECTOR OF RUGBY
Welcome all to Loughborough University, where today we host Hornets. Welcome to all players and officials from the club, in what we hope will be another great game of National League Rugby. Our previous encounter this year was our first fixture, and we are excited to welcome them to campus for the first time
We have come out of the Christmas break full of energy, with a big battle to get us started against our old enemy Exeter University. It proved to be another close game with us unfortunately conceding a late penalty and going down 17-15.
Today’s guests have been competitive all season scoring a lot of points but been on the wrong side of results. That means we need to be on our game and ensure we don’t lose focus. Our fixture away was a prime example with it again being a high scoring game and a last-minute score form the hosts.
The BUCS Super Rugby squad remain top of the League, albeit by 1 point. The league is living up to its billing as the best in the land with all teams capable of beating each other. Our next fixture is away at Nottingham on Friday 27th January, please come and support us.
This week also celebrate the 5 players who have been selected for England U20s. George Patten and Tim Hoyt, Northampton Saints and Leicester Tigers Academy players respectively. With our Students, Charlie Bracken, Josh Manz and Finn Carnduff also being selected.
Congratulations lads
Thanks again for supporting the squad today, it’s been great to see familiar faces every week. All the best to everyone today

Exeter edge all student affair in tough conditions
Top rugby school Millfield played host to an all student national 2 affair as Exeter university locked horns with Loughborough Students.
With Exeter sitting just one place above the visiting Loughborough, it was sure to be a tight affair as both sides looked to begin the post christmas run with a win.
Exeter is always a tough place to visit, for anyone, and so when Loughborough fly half Tom Smith was forced off after just 5 minutes, the job at hand
for them seemed an almighty one.
Consecutive early scores by Exeter, battling against the wind, indicated that a long day could be in order for Loughborough, but credit must go to their resilience to get back into the encounter with a penalty driving maul and a fantastic finish by Tomiwa Agbongbon making sure that the honours were even, as the sides headed into half time at 12-12.
Dan Martin at 15 controlled the game for Loughborough and ensured that they played in the right area of the pitch,
and after a long kick exchange Loughborough soon had a kickable penalty early in the second half, giving them a 15-12 lead.
Exeter fought back hard and found some parity at the set piece after struggling initially, and their pressure on Loughborough eventually told when the replacement scrum half Orson James sniped over to give them a 17-15 lead.
Despite a valiant late effort from Loughborough they could not find an answer, with Exeter picking up a crucial win.

TODAYS OPPOSITION HORNETS
Hornets RFC, based in WestonSuper-Mare are new to the National Leagues, after being promoted from the South-West Premier into National 2 West for this season.
The lifeblood of the club is its junior section, who have been very successful in recent years. The transition between the juniors and seniors is a major component of the club’s squad, alongside attracting external players with their style of rugby and excellent facilities.
Hornets currently sit at tenth in the table, having won three of their 14 games. After beating the Students by just two points in a thrilling match at The Nest, Hornets will be looking to do the double over the Students today.
