RHYS EDWARDS DIRECTOR OF RUGBY

Our partnership with Northampton Saints is going extremely well, reflected by the recent announcement of our successful Tender bid to be part of the Allianz Premier 15s 3.0 from September 2023. This was an extremely rigorous process, with several teams applying. The partnership has allowed us to play at the fantastic Cinch Stadium at Franklins Gardens, but everyone is excited to be back on campus and play on our great pitch.

This season has proved to be a challenging one with World Cup in the Autumn, the league beginning later and players on a staggered return. This has certainly impacted our performances, but we are now starting to get continuity in our training squad which has started to reflect our match performances.

It’s great to welcome DMP Sharks, who have been a ig part of the development of the women’s game over the years. They themselves have been through a challenging period and have decided not to continue in the AP15s. I have huge respect for them as a group and their ‘never say die’ attitude must be commended, certainly something many teams can learn from.

We are keen to correct many of the things we are disappointed with from last week’s fixture against league leaders Gloucester-Hartpury.

It was certainly out of character for us the way we played. We have had a great training week and are keen to hit the ground running this weekend.

Today sees us give Chloe Rollie her debut, having recently joined the club. It’s great to support Chloe on her return to play following the World Cup, and we are excited to see her talent in African Violet and Pink.

Good luck to all today and we hope you have a great day!

Loughborough Lightning fell to a 46-12 defeat against a tough Gloucester-Hartpury side on Saturday.

A tight first half where tries were exchanged by both sides saw the Lightning go into the break only 10 points down, but four further Gloucester tries with no reply took the home side to a comfortable victory.

Gloucester started strong and were rewarded after 8 minutes when Rugman found herself out wide to score in the corner, and made it two just a few minutes later when Emma Sing broke down the left side and handed off to Lund to finish.

However, Lightning found their way back into the game with a spell of possession, winning a penalty just into Gloucester’s half. A pin-point kick from Helen Nelson into the corner put the

victors in prime position to score, and from the resulting line-out, Bryony Field found her way over from the back of a driving maul. A successful conversion by Helen Nelson narrowed the gap to 10-7.

Gloucester responded immediately with a score from Hunt, which Sing converted to reestablish their 10-point lead but Field scored a second for Lightning in a similar manner to the first.

However, a score from Sisilia Tuipulotu took the home side to 22-12 up at the break. Despite continued effort from Lightning, Rugman, Lund and Hunt both found their way over the whitewash again in the second half, while Hannah Jones added another to round out their victory.

Darlington Mowden Park Sharks (known currently as DMP Durham Sharks) were founded in 1996 in Ripon and later moved to Thirsk in North Yorkshire where it was known as Thirsk RFC. The club then moved to Darlington in 2006 and became affiliated to Darlington Mowden Park and changed its name accordingly.

In 2009, Darlington Mowden Park Sharks were promoted from Championship North to the women’s Premiership after finishing top of the table. They then defeated Championship 1 South Team Bath Rugby Ladies in extra time in the playoffs in order to be promoted.

The club used to play their home matches at Yiewsley Drive but in 2012 they purchased The Darlington Arena after Darlington F.C. went out of business.

During the 2016/17 season the sharks launched a development squad for the first time which provided younger players in the with the opportunity to gain experience ahead of the inaugural Tyrells Premier 15s league.

The club has always finished in the bottom half of the table, currently sitting at tenth in the table with zero points.
