WELCOME FROM HEAD COACH CHARLIE BAXTER

Good evening and welcome back to Loughborough Stadium for our final league fixture of the season. I welcome Jenny Sugarman, her players, staff, officials and the supporters of our visitors.

I’ve always had great admiration for Jenny and the work she has done in the Women’s game.

She is a brave, adventurous coach with a clear idea of how she wants her team to play, but is also able to adapt to the needs of the game.

Despite the young age of her squad, I know Jenny’s side will come to Loughborough and look to attack us. Get at us. Play their game. We need to be ready. They have an excellent squad of players who have a lot to fight for. They will be a dangerous opponent for sure.

We need to be focused, controlled, patient but ultimately, we need to channel positive energy into to every action and every moment this evening.

I realise it has not been the season we would have hoped for here at Loughborough. While we will be playing in Tier 4 next season, I have reminded the players and staff that the season is not over yet and we still have much to play for from our standpoint.

The last mid-week game we played here under the lights was an incredible atmosphere against Nottingham. The way we started that game, full of energy and desire – the fans gave us that back and it spurred us on.

We can all embrace that feeling again tonight. Being together, knowing that we can achieve something by helping each other and focusing on what helps us collectively.

When this team and Loughborough are in the right mood I always love what we create. The same again would be fantastic.

Hopefully we can perform to make the supporters proud.

TODAYS OPPOSITION WEST BROMWICH ALBION

The club was formed in 1990, originating from Liverpool Hope University and played in the North West Women’s Regional Football League. The name Feds originates from the Liverpool Institute of Higher Education College, where the sports teams played as a Federation of the St Katherine’s and Christ Notre Dame Colleges. In 1993 a Reserves team was added, and in 1994 a girl’s youth section was created. Today our youth section boasts over 150 girls playing football every week.

Over the years, the club has steadily progressed up the ladder in women’s football, winning successive divisional titles before promotion to the next stage of the women’s pyramid, now the Women’s National League.

During the 2021-2022 season, the first team gained promotion into Tier 3 of the Women’s Football Pyramid, losing only one game all season, reaching a national cup semi-final and progressing to the third round of the Women’s FA Cup for the first time in the club’s history.

LIGHTNING FC A BRIEF HISTORY

LOUGHBOROUGH FOXES

Gail and Paul Fox founded Loughborough Foxes in 1999, known then as Shepshed Foxes until 2002.

For their first 15 years, Foxes played in local leagues, before being promoted to the FA Women’s Northern Premier Division (the 3rd ranked tier of women’s football) in 2015. After the first season they suffered relegation but managed a promotion in 2018 to return to this tier. Winning this Midlands Division One title was actually a club record for Foxes, winning 22 games and drawing just 1.

LOUGHBOROUGH UNIVERSITY PERFORMANCE TEAM

Loughborough Students

Women’s Football Club offers many competitive opportunities. The performance team compete in the British Universities & Colleges Sports (BUCS) Northern Premier League. When possible, players are also supported to play “external football” alongside the programme, most notably with our partner Loughborough Foxes (Tier 3), but also other Tier 3 and Championship clubs.

Each year Loughborough University invests a million pounds in performance sport, and a million pounds in facilities. Thanks to this investment, Director of Football Richard Allen is able to lead a professional programme of coaching and support.

As a first team performance squad member you will receive expert coaching, access

to our world class facilities, heavily discounted Powerbase gym membership, strength and conditioning training, nutrition, sports science and sports medicine support. Within the programme players also have access to Performance Lifestyle support and our top athletes can apply for scholarships.

MERGING/ LIGHTNING LAUNCH

The University’s performance team and the Loughborough Foxes have officially combined to launch a new Lightning programme that will compete nationally against some of the biggest names in the sport.

The clubs have worked in close collaboration for a number of years now with Head Coach Issy Martin overseeing both programmes since her appointment at the University in September 2019.

Lightning will compete in the FA Northern Premier League where it will face teams including Burnley, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Nottingham Forest, and West Bromwich Albion.

2021/22 SEASON

The first season 2021/22 as Loughborough Lightning in the FA Women’s National League ended in a 10th place finish, narrowly avoiding relegation. It was a tough start up until Christmas where the team only picked up a total of 4 points ahead of the break. Following Christmas, the team found their form and produced some fantastic performances and results to ensure they retained their Tier 3 status for the 2022/23 season, finishing on a total of 23 points. Looking ahead to the upcoming season, the team have made some key signings over the summer to develop the squad as well as welcoming to the programme, Director of Football, Rebecca Sawiuk
