RHYS EDWARDS
DIRECTOR OF RUGBY
Welcome back to Epinal Way, Loughborough University for the return of the Allianz Cup where we face Harlequins today.
After a period of no games as the Six Nations has played out, we are back into the swing of things as the Allianz Cup starts up again. The Six Nations sees a number of our senior players on International Duty, including Helena Rowland who returns to action for the first time since the World Cup!
Today sees us give three players their debuts who have come up through the BUCS programme; congratulations to Lucy Dale, Lia Green and Ellen Scantlebury. Abi Burton also makes her debut this week, appearing in her first 15s game since coming back from illness. We are excited to see all four debutants run out in the African Violet and Pink for the first time.
We also say a big thank you to Sarah Hunter, who has recently announced her retirement from rugby after a hugely successful playing career, most recently with Lightning and the Red Roses.
Good luck to all today and we hope you have a great day!

A Georgie Lingham hattrick boosted Loughborough Lightning to a 68-5 victory against Wasps.
The visitors put 12 trys past the bottom-placed Wasps, with Lingham joined on the try sheet by Bo Westcombe-Evans, Megan Davey, Rachel Malcolm, Carys Williams-Morris, Bryony Field, Grace Clifford and Sally Williams.
Lingham started the scoring in the third minute, running it in after Lightning stole a lineout. But Wasps responded quickly, with Molly Saunders getting on the end of a welltimed kick through by Hannah Edwards to add their only points of the game.
Lightning soon overpowered the home side, with Lingham getting two more in quick

succession, before Davey and Malcom both powered over to seal a bonus point before the break. A yellow card for Wasps’ lock Fiona Cooper after 38 minutes gave Malcolm space to grab a brace just before the half time whistle blew.
Lightning continued to dominate, with Williams-Morris dotting it down on 42 minutes to get the ball rolling in the second half. Field then found herself on the end of a driving maul to add another five points, before WestcombeEvans went over twice, and Clifford and Williams added two more in quick succession.
A yellow card for Williams saw Lightning finish the game a player down, but despite an attempt at posts, Wasps could not add to their tally.
By Bethan ClargoTODAYS OPPOSITION HARLEQUINS
Harlequins is one of the oldest and most famous rugby clubs in the world. Founded in 1866, the club is a founding member of the RFU and is famous for its quartered shirt.
Harlequins has over 230 community clubs and schools affiliated locally to The Stoop, its home of over 50 years in south-west London, as well as a further eight across the world. On a playing front, Harlequins has developed successful academies and regularly provides players for international representational honours. At this year’s Women’s World Cup, Harlequins had six players representing England, two representing Scotland, two representing Australia and one representing the USA.
In 2016, during Harlequins 150th anniversary year, the club announced that it would significantly grow its involvement in the women’s game. Developing women’s
rugby is a key element of Harlequin’s strategy which also focuses on growing the number of participants through an established pathway from grassroots to elite level.
In delivering this programme, Harlequins confirmed a new partnership with Women’s Premiership Side Aylesford Bulls Ladies. Under the stewardship of co-head coaches Gary Street and Karen Findlay, Aylesford Bulls secured a league and cup double, before the inauguration of the Premier 15s competition.
In the first season of the new league, Quins reached the final of the competition but were beaten 24-20 by Saracens Women at the Trailfinders Sports Ground, also losing to Saracens the following year. Harlequins are the only team other than Saracens to have won the Premier 15s, topping the table in the 2020-21 season.
