LOUGHBOROUGH STUDENTS RFC V STOURBRIDGE RUGBY
RHYS EDWARDS
DIRECTOR OF RUGBY Welcome all to Loughborough University, where today we host Stourbridge in the rearranged fixture from Round 5 of National 2 North. The original game was a casualty of COVID, evidence that we still need to be mindful of its prevalence. Stourbridge are still unbeaten in the league and have quietly picked up some impressive results. Last weeks away win at Wharfdale continued that run, which show they are a force again this season in Nat 2 North. Last week game proved a classic for the neutral against Sheffield Tigers, however we are kicking ourselves for not finishing the job in such a high scoring game. There are certainly some lessons there that we have learnt and everyone is excited for the challenge this weekend. The BUCS Competition continued again this week with all our teams again playing, with impressive wins for our BUCS 2s, 3s, 4s and 5s. Continuing their unbeaten starts to the season. The BSR squad fell agonisingly short away at Durham (12-17), in a very cold, and attritional encounter. The last minute penalty by Josh Lewis, will be a valuable bonus point, but certainly a game we should’ve one. Another reminder of our new club membership model. Thank you for all that have already joined, please make sure you to access all the club have to offer. It would be great to have as many of you as members of our club, and your support would ensure
that we continue to develop the next generations of players and staff. Please contact rugby@lboro.ac.uk for more information. All the best to everyone today. Rhys Director of Rugby

Loughborough pressed on into Sheffield’s half and after two attempts to score Alex Wainwright scored between the post from scrum deep in their 22.
NARROW VICTORY FOR THE TIGERS. Last Saturday Loughborough hosted the ninth round of National League 2 North against Sheffield Tigers. Loughborough took the kick, which started a high-velocity game between the two sides. After a series of dominant carries from Tigers, the away side found themselves buried underneath the posts and quick hands left of the breakdown awarded Mellor with a try.
Although Loughborough tried to narrow the score board, Sheffield capitalised on any student’s infringement opting to kick to post. This gave them a penalty on the 22nd & 37th minute, successfully taken by Ireland. Loughborough’s backs were quick and agile, which lead to Walsh breaking through their defensive line. This was successfully converted by Archie Heard.
left-hand corner, although Sheffield quickly retaliated with Hughes score from a driven maul from just inside the 22. The away side quickly followed up with two more successful penalties by Ireland and even though Wainwright dotted over the line for his second try after turning over the ball at the Sheffield lines, the game was over, and Sheffield came out victorious.
Loughborough entered the second half with only a sixpoint difference between the two sides. A quick snipe from Law and great support from James resulted in a try at the By Ryan Stevens

LOUGHBOROUGH STUDENTS RFC V STOURBRIDGE RUGBY
TODAYS OPPOSITION
STOURBRIDGE RUGBY Stourbridge RFC was started by members of the Cricket Club who wanted a winter activity and at first it was so successful that the club’s name was changed to the Stourbridge Cricket and Football Club. However, within a few years, due to organisation and shortage of players, led to rugby football being ousted at Amblecote to be replaced by the rival sport association. From 1883 rugby football soldiered on in a variety of locations throughout the town illuminated by a mini golden era from 188789 when only 4 games were lost out of a total of 37. The club was re-formed in 1945 after the Second World War and it has made steady progress on and off the field ever since. The consistent success of the 1st XV is reflected
by the fact that in only four of the 56 post war seasons have they ended up with a losing record. Facilities have improved throughout this period but the most significant change was the move to the present site at Stourton in 1965-6. Originally just over 11 acres, it was extended to 15 acres in 1983-4. Back in March Stourbridge were proud to announce that 5 academy players (Dallas Ororo, Adam Tamilio, Oliver Clare, Max Brown and Dmitri Morrison) were offered first team contracts as a result of them being a part of the Stourbridge academy. So far this season Stourbridge have been in great form winning all 7 of their games. The Students will have to work hard today to end their winning streek.

LOUGHBOROUGH STUDENTS RFC
A BRIEF HISTORY 1984 Rex Hazeldine is appointed as Head Coach leading the side to a UAU title and victory in the Leicestershire Cup. A touring Australian Universities side was also defeated.
1976
1919
1962-68
Loughborough College formed the original Rugby Union side in September 1919.
These were spectacular years for Loughborough, winning every UAU title except 1965. Gerald Davies, John Mantle, Dave Rollit, John Taylor, Bev Risman and Colin MacFadyean, became world class players. John Robins became the first British and Irish Lions coach.
1930 Loughborough Colleges competed in their first Universities Athletic Union competition, beating Nottingham University 8-0 in their first match.
1939 Loughborough Colleges reached the UAU final for the first time, losing narrowly to Swansea.
1953 Loughborough Colleges won the UAU for the first time.
Middlesex 7s winners: 1959, 1964 1966, 1970 and 1976.
1996 Loughborough enter the leagues at the bottom of the RFU pyramid.
The Student’s Unions of the University of Technology and the Loughborough Colleges merged and the Loughborough Students Rugby Club was formed. The team won the UAU in 1977, 1978 and 1979, with the 1978–79 side captained by the young centre Clive Woodward.
17
1970 The legendary Jim Greenwood coaches the Colleges to victory in the Middlesex Sevens, and the first UAU final at Twickenham. This side was probably the strongest ever, with six future internationals, Louis Dick, David Cooke, Clive Rees, Fran Cotton, Steve Smith, and Dick Cowman.
1997 Loughborough wins over Cambridge and Oxford in consecutive weeks signals the changing balance of power in student rugby.
1998 Ian Smith is appointed as the first full-time Director of Rugby.
2003 The World Cup winning England team was coached by six Loughborough alumni: Clive Woodward, Dave Alred, Andy Robinson, Dave Reddin, Phil Larder and Simon Hardy.
2005 Winning BUCS in 2005 breaks our longest spell without a BUCS victory.
2006 Real Varsity Match v Bath. Floodlights Appeal provides campus venue for the first ever rugby ‘event’ and engages alumni leading to the Vice Presidents club. A 3000+ crowd watched Loughborough beat Bath.
2008 Director of Rugby Dave Morris leads the side to promotion into National League 2 North, making the team the first student side to take part in the National Leagues.
2009 The Dan James Memorial Match Loughborough 23 – 20 England U20 A magnificent achievement for Dave Morris’ team and a suitably characterful performance through which to remember Dan.
2012 Loughborough v The Barbarians. A huge match to mark the opening of the Loughborough Stadium. Andy Robinson’s Barbarian side win 40– 7. Loughborough promoted into National League 1.
2016 Fiji win the first Olympic 7s competition coached by Loughborough alumni Ben Ryan, defeating Team GB in the process and fellow Loughborough alumni Phil Burgess.
2017 Loughborough Lightning enter the Tyrrells Premier 15s league.
