LLM in International Business Law The international programme for the global world

ESADE’s LLM in International Business Law In the increasingly globalised economy of the 21st century, lawyers will need to understand law transnationally, across different legal systems and cultures. Lawyers graduating today are likely to confront legal problems and opportunities that will take them beyond the borders of their home countries. The programme is aimed at students who are planning a career in international business law or European law. It consists of an international business law core that shares a number of compulsory courses, and is an opportunity for students to specialise in fields not fully covered by their previous law studies. The LLM Programme is designed to maximise students’ intellectual potential and keep them up to date by drawing on the real-life experience of faculty and other practitioners. Aimed at recent law graduates (or graduates of joint degrees with a significant law content), the programme is rigorous and demanding and requires serious commitment. Particular areas of expertise include International Business & Commercial Law, International Financial Law, Competition Law and European Law, amongst others. The programme aims to refine students’ analytic and theoretical skills through the study of law in its social, economic and political context. It will enhance students’ capacity to conduct legal research, to critically assess arguments and evidence, and to communicate the results in short or long research papers, and will also expose students to contrasting jurisdictional approaches to legal issues.

An unforgettable life experience. A challenging change of mindset that will prepare you for the global world.”

Diana Ferrer LLM Executive Director Tax Law Associate Lecturer

Why Study the LLM in International Business Law at ESADE? 1. Thorough training in the international and transnational aspects of business law The LLM in International Business Law aims to equip students with a complete, real-life vision of the corporate legal world, as well as an international and transnational outlook on business law. In fact, these goals are two facets of the same objective: Today, the business world can only be understood in an international context.

2. Exciting electives Students have the opportunity to take a range of electives and seminars that cover specific subjects or which expand on certain aspects of the syllabus. All of the electives and seminars on offer are linked directly or indirectly to the business world and its international legal dimension. Electives and seminars may be offered in English or Spanish, so that students who wish to do so can practise their Spanish.

3. Management courses The management module provides training in management-specific content and skills, which will help students gain a better understanding of the complexity of a risk or a legal dispute. Ultimately, legal professionals cannot fully understand these concepts without of knowledge of finance, accounting, business valuation, and so on.

4. Innovative methodological approach In the interest of students’ future employability, the programme encourages them to develop executive competences and skills through a practical and varied methodology that combines lectures with hands-on sessions, classroom discussions, teamwork, oral presentations and mock trials.

5. World-class faculty The LLM programme includes prominent national and international faculty and experts in all aspects of public and private law. Most hold doctoral degrees in related fields, including economics and finance, and they play an active role in the international business community, serving as corporate consultants and board members as well as speakers at industry events worldwide.

6. Barcelona: A fascinating location A year spent studying on a cutting-edge Master’s programme in Barcelona is an exciting and challenging prospect. Barcelona is an open-minded, distinctly Mediterranean city. It has many interesting features that make it a fascinating place to live. In addition to its beauty, Barcelona is also a lively, cosmopolitan city that offers all kinds of cultural activities. At ESADE, you will be inspired by the vibrant atmosphere of learning, motivated by peers from around the world, and encouraged by lecturers to become – like Barcelona – what it is that makes you so different.

7. Global connections ESADE Alumni is an association that enables ESADE graduates to stay in touch with one another, and with ESADE, after completing their studies. Because ESADE graduates hold positions of responsibility in organisations around the world, ESADE Alumni is a formidable network that generously shares opportunities, relationships and experiences. The network currently consists of 45,000 alumni in 114 countries.

8. International environment 26 nationalities are represented at ESADE Law School, including students and visiting professors from the most prestigious universities around the world: Università Bocconi (Italy); Georgetown Law Center (USA); Yonsei University (South Korea).

ESADE Law School ESADE Law School was founded in 1992 with the purpose of training versatile lawyers, capable of meeting the new challenges posed by the changing legal environment; lawyers committed to the ideal of justice and trained to carry out their duties with excellence in a global context. ESADE Law School is committed to a multidisciplinary international education geared not only around acquiring knowledge but, above all, around developing the skills and competences that are essential for every lawyer. It is vital for today’s lawyers to know how to operate successfully in a multicultural context: They need to know foreign languages and be familiar with the legal systems of other countries. For this reason, the Law School has built up a network of international relations that spans the five continents and allows a constant exchange of students, faculty and knowledge at the highest level. As a result, it can guarantee its participants a truly international-level education. • ESADE Law School is a member of the International Association of Law Schools and the European Law Faculties Association. It has also signed academic exchange agreements with over 40 law schools in Europe, America, Asia and the Middle East. • Center for Transnational Legal Studies (CTLS): ESADE Law School is the only Spanish Law School to be a member of the founding schools of the Center for Transnational Legal Studies (CTLS). The London-based CTLS is a global partnership currently encompassing over 20 schools from almost as many countries around the world. The initiative is premised on a belief that, as legal practice becomes increasingly ‘transnational’, the best legal education must include exposure to ideas, faculty members and fellow students from many different legal systems. • Themis: This is a network currently made up of four top European Universities: Freie Universität Berlin (Germany), Università Commerciale Luigi Bocconi (Italy), Université de Paris 12 (France) and ESADE (Spain), in addition to The University of Pennsylvania Law School. It aims to bring a new learning approach to International Business Law. The THEMIS network offers a Joint Certificate in International and Business Law, unique in Spain.

ESADE, an academic institution consistently ranked in top positions in the major rankings and recognised with the three most internationally prestigious quality accreditations in the field of business schools.

Building a better future requires competent and socially responsible professionals. Our commitment is to assist them in their academic education and professional development.”
