ABOUT HIM... Joaquín Cava has developed most of his career at The Boston Consulting Group (BCG), which he joined in 1994. He became a partner and Vice-President of the firm in January 2002. During his career as a consultant, he has worked with a wide range of clients in all sectors: consumer goods; banking; industry (cement, machine tools, metallurgy, etc.); energy; telecommunications; diversified industrial conglomerates, etc. He has been involved in projects in a wide range of functional areas, including: strategic definition and implementation; design and implementation of business or expansion plans; organisational and process design; definition of business strategies (channels, products, pricing, etc.); implementation of plans to improve operational efficiency; management of merger processes and synergies; valuation of acquisition objectives and participation in due diligence processes; overseeing of the design and implementation of new strategies for information systems. While at BCG, Joaquín Cava was also responsible for the areas of recruitment and marketing at the company’s offices in Madrid, Barcelona and Lisbon. Before joining BCG, he worked with The Mac Group and Prodesfarma, SA.

ABOUT HIM... Professor Chesbrough holds a PhD in Business Administration from Haas School of Business, University of California at Berkeley, an MBA from Stanford Graduate School of Business and a BA in Economics from Yale University. He is currently Professor at Haas School of Business, University of California, Berkeley, and Executive Director of the Center for Open Innovation, which focuses on research and teaching related with the impact of globally distributed knowledge on growth, strategy and industrial innovation. In 2009-2010 he was appointed Visiting Professor at ESADE Business School. From 1997 to 2003 he was Assistant Professor at Harvard Business School, with a joint appointment in Technology and Operations Management and in Entrepreneurial Management. Professor Chesbrough was responsible for coining the term ‘Open Innovation’. He has worked in various Fortune 500 companies in fields related to: mass storage; application software; networks and communications; information services. He is also an expert in after-sales services, support to the copy industry and the impact of Internet on the insurance industry. His latest publications include: Open Innovation: The New Imperative for Creating and Profiting from Technology Models (HBS Press, 2003), which won the 2003 Best Business Book Award from Strategy & Business Magazine; Open Business Models: How to Thrive in the New Innovation Landscape (HBS Press, 2006), recognised as one of the top-ten books on innovation by BusinessWeek Magazine; and Open Innovation: Researching a New Paradigm (Oxford, 2006).

ABOUT HIM... Alfredo Ibáñez holds a PhD in Financial Economics (Universidad Carlos III de Madrid,) and a degree in Engineering. He is currently Associate Professor in the Department of Financial Management and Control at ESADE. He previously taught at UPF, ITAM (Mexico), UC3M (Madrid) and as a visiting scholar at ASU (Arizona) and UCLA (California). For four years (2007-2010), he worked in the financial sector and in derivatives (Caja Madrid). Alfredo believes that both financial economics and the theory of option pricing help us understand how financial markets work and how prices are formed. His research focuses on the development and application of models for equity derivatives, fixed interest securities and credit, investment and risk management, volatility and financial econometrics, and banking and the financial sector. His recent research examines the optimal method for determining the correct price and exercising American options by simulation. He has been published in several academic journals, such as JFQA, Management Science, Mathematical Finance, Journal of Banking and Finance and Review of Derivatives Research. He has presented his research findings at numerous academic conferences, including those organised by the WFA. He has twice won awards for best paper on derivatives in the events organised by the Spanish Finance Association (AEFIN) and is a regular referee for several journals.

ABOUT HIM... Dr Thomas Maak is Professor of Leadership and Responsibility in the Human Resource Management Department at ESADE Business School in Barcelona, Spain. Previously a faculty member and Professor at the University of St. Gallen in Switzerland, he also co-directed a research stream within the PwC-INSEAD initiative on high-performing organisations at INSEAD (France) from 2004 to 2009. He has held visiting positions at Columbia University, New York and at Georgetown University in Washington, DC. His research and teaching focuses on business ethics, corporate citizenship, integrity management, responsible leadership and HRM. Dr Maak has been a member of the Executive Committee of the European Business Ethics Network EBEN (2002-2010) and a member of the Executive Committee of the International Society for Business, Ethics and Economics ISBEE since 2009. He serves as Associate Editor on the Journal of Business Ethics. As consultant and advisor, he has worked with leading corporations such as Shell, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Volkswagen and DONG Energy. Among his many publications are Responsible Leadership (with Nicola Pless; London/New York: Routledge, 2006; Russian transl., Moscow: Alpina Business Books, 2008), Integre Unternehmensführung. Ethisches Orientierungswissen für die Wirtschaftspraxis? (with Peter Ulrich; Stuttgart: Schäffer-Poeschel, 2007), for which he received the prestigious German Max-Weber-Award 2008 and the forthcoming Responsible Global Leadership: Value Creation in a Connected World (Cambridge University Press; with Nicola Pless).

ABOUT HIM... Dimo Ringov is Assistant Professor of Strategy in the Department of Business Policy at ESADE Business School. Before joining ESADE, Dimo pursued his PhD in the Department of Strategy at INSEAD (France & Singapore). He also holds an MBA from Purdue University as well as a Master in Management from INSEAD. Dimo’s current research explores how properties of organisational design impact firms’ performance leveraging insights from evolutionary and behavioural approaches to strategy and organisation. His work has examined whether the accurate replication or greater local adaptation of a multi-unit organisation’s business model improves the performance of individual units. Further research has investigated the type of processes behind the main source of greater performance of firms in dynamic markets. His ongoing studies address how organisational structure and decision process can help mitigate the impact of individual behavioural biases on organisational decisions in the context of the mutual fund industry. Dimo Ringov’s work has been published in Organization Science (forthcoming), MIT Sloan Management Review, Corporate Governance and Academy of Management Proceedings. He has received several research awards, including the Booz Allen Hamilton and Best Conference Paper Award nominations at the 2006 and 2009 Strategic Management Society meetings, and an award for Best Paper Proceedings at the 2007 Academy of Management meeting. Dimo is an ad hoc referee for the Academy of Management (Business Policy & Strategy Division), European Management Review and Research Policy. He is a member of the Academy of Management, the Strategic Management Society and INFORMS.

ABOUT HIM... Javier Santiso is Director at Telefonica International and Chair of the OECD Emerging Markets Network (EmNet). In 2009, he was nominated Young Global Leader (YGL) by the World Economic Forum (Davos). He is a member of the Global Advisory Councils for the World Economic Forum and Aspen Institute France. He previously served as Director and Chief Economist of the OECD Development Centre, a policy think-tank with a staff of 90, focused on Africa, Asia and Latin America. The Centre experienced a profound transformation under his leadership, with nearly a tripling of its staff and a doubling of the Governing Board. Prior to taking up this position, he was Chief Economist for Emerging Markets at BBVA. He has also worked for Indosuez, a French investment bank (now part of Crédit Agricole), and has advised Lazard Frères Gestion and Pfizer on emerging markets, as well as delivering consultancy services to the Inter-American Development Bank. Professor Santiso has been a tenured Professor at Sciences Po Paris (France), and has lectured on international economics at SAIS Johns Hopkins University (USA) and HEC School of Management (France). He started his career as a Research Fellow of St Anthony’s College, Oxford University (UK). He is widely recognised as one of the leading authorities on emerging markets. He has published over 30 articles in specialised academic journals in addition to half a dozen books. His latest publications include: Latin America’s Political Economy of the Possible, Cambridge, Mass., MIT Press, 2006; and The Visible Hand of China in Latin America, Paris, OECD, 2007.

ABOUT HIM... Franck Wiengarten completed his PhD degree entitled ‘Measuring the performance impact of electronic business applications in buyer-supplier relationships within the German automotive industry’ in September 2008 (Ulster Business School, UK). He holds a Diploma in Business & Management (Paderborn University, Germany). After completing his PhD he became a PostDoctoral Research Fellow at the UCD Smurfit School of Business (Dublin, Ireland). Besides his academic career, he has worked for various well-known consultancy and logistics firms such as PricewaterhouseCoopers and the DB Schenker Group. Frank Wiengarten’s current research explores the role of several environmental and sustainable practices (e.g. ISO 14,000 certification, workers health & safety, recycling & waste reduction) in the supply chain setting. He has specifically explored the impact of institutional factors such as the country and the level of economic development on the degree of investments in sustainable supply chain management practices. In his earlier research projects, he examined the role and importance of electronic business systems on collaborative supply chain practices. He has analysed the enabling role of various electronic business systems on collaborative supply chain practices such as information sharing or joint decision making. Frank Wiengarten is currently working on two research projects. Firstly, he is involved in an ESRC research grant that explores the impact of ISO 14,000/9,000 certification on a firms’ financial performance in various countries. Secondly, he is part of a multi-country research group exploring various sustainable supply chain and related operational performance issues.
