Mentoring is a powerful personal development and empowerment process. It provides an opportunity to learn a lot about yourself and alternative strategies for going about the way you work and progress in your career. The Marketing Society Scotland runs an informal mentoring programme but our aim is for both parties to get as much out of the experience as possible. We hope you find these guidelines helpful.

FIRST OFF WHAT WILL I GET OUT OF HAVING A MENTOR?
A mentor should help you to believe in yourself and boost your confidence. A mentor should ask questions and challenge, while providing guidance and encouragement. Having a mentor will allow you to explore new ideas it's a chance to look more closely at yourself, your issues, opportunities and what you want in life.
WHO WILL BE MY MENTOR?
GETTING OFF TO A GREAT START
We'll do our best to match you up with a mentor who has the most relevant experience to suit your mentoring needs. Your mentor will usually be from a membership level senior to yourself e.g.
You should contact your mentor to arrange your first meeting. It's helpful to agree what it is you are both expecting and the practicalities of the meetings:
Graduates - Associates Associates - Executive Executive - Business Leader Business Leader - Fellows
Overall goals and objectives Duration and frequency of meeting Contact between meetings Confidentiality

NEXT STEPS THE MEETINGS
WHAT TO PREPARE
FINALLY‌
You and your mentor should agree how often you meet. We do recommend a minimum of two meetings over the course of the year.
You should:
Set goals, develop a plan, listen, learn, challenge and explore and then review.
Typically, sessions usually last between 60-90 minutes.
Set the agenda Prepare for each meeting Think about the outcomes you are looking for from each meeting Take equal responsibility for managing the relationship Agree when the arrangement should come to a formal close
The more you put in, the more you get in return.
