Women in tech are notably absent and it’s getting worse, not better… Tech is one of the world’s fastest growing sectors… 20% 17% 16% 16.6% 15% % of women in design and engineering firms
12% 10%)
But women are bowing out in droves… Confidential Restricted – Not to be disclosed beyond authorised roles within Standard Life group or authorised third parties

Female leadership is good for business • Ave. returns were 28.7% vs 19.1% where women occupy 50% or more Executive positions (Credit Suisse) • Successful start ups have 2x more women in senior leadership positions than unsuccessful ones (NCWIT) • Managers are less skilled and organisations are less innovative when women aren’t in leadership positions (World Bank) • Women score better in 12/16 modern leadership competencies like developing others and taking initiative (Accenture)

But it’s individual leadership that can make the biggest difference… 1. Be a role model: People look to replicate what leaders value. Are you digital? Are you inclusive? How’s your UB radar? Do you constructively challenge others? 2. Be a mentor: Don’t be like Google. Value women for women rather than coach them to be more like men. 3. Be a champion: Quotas, networks, and diversity teams will only go so far. More women in tech will only come through deeper culture change. Having more women in tech and leadership has demonstrable value. How is your organisation measured? How do you measure yourself?
