Local band ready to entertain 2015 With thanks to our headline partners and sponsors

I

F YOU ask anyone in Torbay who their favourite local band is... I think 3 Bags Full, or 3BF as they’re known, would be mentioned several times! 3BF regularly play the local music circuit as well as providing the backing track for many happy wedding parties across the South West. The band is made up of Barney Dine, Dean Mancey and Angie Dine. Lead singer and guitarist Barney Dine has a proven track record in the music industry, right back to his days with Dr Frank and the Thin Line Groovers, later forming the local cult sensation Daddy Mango and now enjoying the live music scene with 3BF together with his

wife Angie who regularly steps up on Bass guitar. The multi-talented drummer Dean Mancey is on percussion, guitar and vocals. 3BF play a mixture of contemporary tunes and rock classics in their own rocky, funky style and have earned themselves a solid reputation with fans and local musicians alike. If you want to see 3BF, you can usually catch them at The Spinning Wheel in Paignton on Wednesdays and The Offshore in Torquay on Thursdays. It was set up by Gemma Belcher who said: “ I was made redundant and after the initial panic of being out of work decided to turn a negative into a positive and start a business. “We specialise in natural healthcare for pets and, wherever possible, have a herbal and natural alternative. We have advisers such as a Dr of Marine Biology, a specialist in Ornithology and a qualified animal behaviour and welfare specialist. “We have never, and will never sell animals.” She has given a local cat rehoming centre their own window space. LASTIC SURGEON provides a cosmetic repair service for r e n d e r, p l a s t i c , glass, wood, ceramic, metal, brick, stone, marble and granite. The company has expanded from being a one-man band to become the UK’s largest and only national provider of the service, operating seven regional teams across the UK. The service today is the result of a Management buyout in 2008. As the MBO was finalised the recession hit UK house building and the directors realised they had to adapt their product to new markets in order to survive. The business was restructured as the focus shifted from house build to construction. The company continues to strengthen commercial partnerships and has secured significant forward business. The work to broaden the customer base also continues at a pace and the company has made significant gains in the housing, construction, insurance, facilities management and cruise line sectors. The company is financed entirely by its shareholders with no bank debt. IRTUAL JET CENTRE is a Flight Simulator company using a self-build replica Boeing 737-800 Simulator offering a number of income streams. The core business is the provision of Professional Pilot Training courses. The secondary businesses are corporate events, fear of flying and flight experiences. Andy Wilkins explained: “When I was offered redundancy from Thomson airways, after nearly 20 years’ service, I took this golden opportunity to realise my dream of building my own training centre. The flight experience is available to most ages, except for the very young, and appeals to all genders. The experience will also assist students in deciding on a career path in aviation. “Our philosophy is to educate the future generation. Groups of schoolchildren are invited to visit the centre and

we also provide work experience for individual students.” E S T C OU N T RY DIRECT is a dedicated tradeonly distribution business with the primary purpose of building a distribution network throughout the South West for food and drink producers. David Sutheran said: “We specialise in seeking out small artisan producers from the Westcountry. We then support them through increased sales and new routes to market. This allows the producers more time to do what

they do best, make great tasting products. The retailer then has a one-stop shop and the ability to order from a single source point. “We had a rapid growth curve doubling our initial year one forecast. We are on target to double that again in year two. We are looking at a purpose-built unit for 2016 which will bring further employment to Devon. We have taken on a sales supervisor and have plans to expand the contract delivery side of the business, too, in 2015. Beyond that we have plans to franchise the business throughout the UK.”

AIGNTON ZOO was the third zoo worldwide to be ISO14001 accredited and has a full Environmental Management System in place. It also employs an Environmental Officer whose key role is to set, monitor and review internal targets to ensure that they are being achieved. Katherine Sobey explained: We are keen believers in leading by example and so we not only study our local environmental impact - but global. We would be delighted to win this award with the hope that the accreditation would contribute to our vision and inspire positive behaviour change in both businesses and individuals. “An example of our global conservation efforts is our aim to educate visitors about the impact that harvesting palm oil is having on the environment and in particular the devastating effect that it is having on the habitat of orang utans – leading to their near extinction. As a result we are working hard to supply as many palm-oil free products as possible. “Our Gift Shop offers a wide selection of fair trade and ethical products and we have palm oil interpretation in key areas to inform visitors of the effects of this product on biodiversity. “We have also inspired one of our suppliers; Proper Cornish to create palm oil free pasties which they now supply to Paignton Zoo as well as other establishments.” LASTIC SURGEON provides a cosmetic repair service for r e n d e r, p l a s t i c , glass, wood, ceramic, metal, brick, stone, marble and granite. The company employs a UK-wide team of over 115 repair technicians (or finishers) operating from seven regional centres, each with an operations and field sales manager. Plastic Surgeon’s cosmetic repair service enables businesses and homeowners to have damaged surfaces repaired, rather than having to replace them. Every year, the company’s repairs save nearly 2,000 tonnes from going to landfill on new construction and house-build sites and in existing buildings such as universities, offices, hotels and residential properties. In 2014 alone, Plastic Surgeon repaired 82,839 items, saving 2,194 tonnes from landfill waste. Plastic Surgeon’s service minimises waste, reduces landfill, helps to cut carbon emissions and preserve existing buildings. From worktops, baths, shower trays, and

The £6.6million South West

Energy Centre was officially opened by His Royal Highness the Duke of Gloucester in June 2014, who praised the project for providing the skills to ensure not just economic growth and prosperity, but also for helping to preserve the environment for generations to come. In addition to providing training and qualifications, the centre also offers free advice on energy saving measures to the public, who can drop in during the week to speak to the expert team or see first-hand some of the innovative technologies that could save them money and

reduce emissions. This includes tours of the Passivhaus; a structure designed to showcase revolutionary building solutions and sustainable building techniques. The centre hosts free events designed to spread the word about renewable and green technologies. More recently, it has been exploring the Chinese market and been on successful sales international missions. In addition, it is in contact with inbound agents in London, including China Holidays. Karen Jonas explained: “Currently we have one FIT Agreement in place and we are anticipating at least a further five at International Luxury Travel Market Asia in June 2015. We have also been actively promoting Dartington Hall and the South West to 30million Chinese viewers through a Chinese travel show.” Dartington Hall has also engaged with Chinese social media, WeChat and Weibo, and is formulating plans to initiate a Mandarin page on its own website. NTER-LINE BUILDING SUPPLIES is an independent builders’ merch a n t , d i s t r i bu t i n g building materials to the trade and DIY sectors. Mike Lewis said: “We are a family-run business with, we are told, a ‘big reputation’. That reputation has been built around the customer and the high level of service we offer. We will always look at further investment within the business which will only improve and enhance our current offering.” The company is currently re-developing its website and is active on all formats of social media. He said: “We have also recently launched a CRM (Customer Relationship Management) system. This is used by the commercial sales team for capturing data about existing and potential customers. “Also this year we will be launching our new quarterly sales brochure. This is an investment for us in purchasing special offers from our suppliers so we can pass this on to our customers.” IVING COASTS is an all-weather attraction located on T o r q u a y h a rbourside. Following analysis of visitor research, it identified a number of strategic objectives that needed to be reflected within the marketing plan. Since re-branding, we have identified a steady increase in visitor numbers.”

ENNYWELL FARM has approximately 70,000 visitors each year. It identified a potential problem when new legislation was brought in preventing families from taking children out of school during term time. Valerie Bickford-Beers explained: “We noticed we had an increasing number of young adults visiting without children, so we brought in students from the University of Plymouth studying tourism to identify potential new markets. “Our aim was to make sure we did not see a drop in visitor

numbers. Using research from the university students and our own visitor surveys, we knew that Pennywell had the facilities to offer great days out for adults, we’d just never packaged it and marketed it before. “We concentrated the campaign on students and young adults. Research suggested social media was the best way to target that market but we also wanted to back this up with a grown-up version of the Pennywell leaflet. “The campaign was over two years with a budget of just £5,000.”

ally for a range of events and around the world from product launches and corporate events to exclusive weddings and luxury private parties. It was set up by Rebecca Marks and her brother Ben with just five acts – including a local singer from South Devon - and a website they had built themselves. By April 2011, when the business was officially launched, Rebecca and Ben decided to specialise in international entertainment and events after realising there was a gap in the market. Scarlett Entertainment is now involved with around 1,500 events annually in more than 50 locations around the world from Dubai and Brunei to Beirut and Greece. A relatively new business, it has already amassed an impressive list of high profile clients and brands that staff have worked with including Formula 1, A-list celebrities, Middle Eastern and Asian Royalty, Hollywood Films and International Film Premieres. Scarlett Entertainment has one of the largest act rosters of any UK entertainment agency, representing more than 6,000 acts around the world. Scarlett Entertainment has overcome many obstacles. One of the biggest problems faced by a business that deals with international performers and clients is language barriers. The company has attempted to overcome this through employing international interns and staff members. Staff speak a total of 10 languages. It also offers work placements to students from around the world and has had the privilege to work with people from France, Spain, Italy, Germany, Switzerland and Russia. It now has ongoing links with the Training Partnership in Torbay and the Totnes European School. Amy Capron said: “Scarlett Entertainment has indeed flourished since its creation and launch, thanks to the hard work and dedication of all involved in the growth of the business. The annual turnover has roughly doubled year on year.” “In order for Scarlett Entertainment to move forward, the business is looking to open offices in new locations around the world. Plans are currently underway to open new offices in Las Vegas and Singapore in 2015 in order to maximise business opportunities within these markets and compete effectively. “Up to 20 new websites are set for launch this year. The plans include a separate website for each country location where Scarlett Entertainment supplies entertainment.”

It has a Five Star Salon status in the Good Salon Guide and has been a regional finalist in the prestigious British Hairdressing Aw a r d s a n d B r i t i s h Hairdressing Business Awards. The HAC Hair and Beauty team is led by Salcombe-born Sara Antoniades. Lucy Wallace said: “We wholeheartedly take on board t h e a p p r e n t i c e s h i p p r ogramme, working closely with the hairdressing team at South Devon College. We find apprentices increase productivity, keep costs low, and it is fabulous to watch their skills develop. Sarah recently volunteered to plan a hair show at SDC. Lucy added: “I believe updating our skills and on-going development enhances the team’s talents. We believe that apprentices should be invested in and given every opportunity to develop their skills. Both internal and external training is necessary to bring the best out in people.” E A L T H WAT C H TORBAY is a charitable organisation and Torbay’s independent consumer champion for health and social care. It collates and analyses public feedback on health and social care services such as hospitals, doctors, dentists and care homes and ensure it is listened to and acted upon by both the providers and those that commission the services. Simon Culley explained: “As the business grew, so did our administration needs. In summer 2014 we discussed the need for an apprentice. In September 2014 we hired Jack Watts as our new administration apprentice. Following initial training, he has turned into an invaluable asset to the organisation. “Jack now organises all patient bookings, meeting requests and staff diaries; and is a much-liked, front-facing first point of call on the public reception desk of our Paignton Library Walk-in centre.” P I R E N T C O M M UNICATIONS is a leading manufacturing organisation focused on GPS and GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite Systems) test and measurement solutions, based in Paignton. The company hires placement students from local universities and also graduate students and in 2014 took on its first apprentices. It currently has three who are well on their way to completing their qualifications

with the support of on-the-job training and mentoring. Its apprentices work in the manufacturing, electronics and HR departments. All three attend day release courses at South Devon College and spend the remaining days on site at the Paignton offices. Spirent provides a high level of support to allow hands-on experience, backed up with the knowledge passed on from experienced staff. Its flexibility as an employer also allows time for each apprentice to work towards their qualification with time to complete assignments.

Rachel Brewer said: “Our technical roles require very specific skills and it is rare to find these in the general recruitment market. Instead we developed a structured, com-
