Silver surfers: Housebuilder McCarthy & Stone says many older people are tech-savvy
A NEW poll has found that retirees from across Exmouth are becoming part of a growing generation of IAPs (Internet Age Pensioners), thanks to their amazing grasp of technology. Research from McCarthy & Stone, Britain’s leading builder of retirement housing, found that more than half of adults aged over 60 are comfortable with downloading new apps, happy to back up their PC with security software, and think nothing of syncing their iPhones, or uploading pictures on Facebook. Interestingly, while 85 per cent of respondents in Exmouth said they still generally like to keep in contact with their friends and family via the telephone, an impressive 25 per cent are frequent users of Facebook, and 53 per cent of those regularly use it for messaging purposes. Jacqui Meenan, regional sales and marketing director for McCarthy & Stone, said: ‘’There is a perception that retirees are less knowledgeable when it comes to technology, but that really isn’t the case anymore. For example, did you know that 41 per cent of pensioners in Exmouth now own a tablet device, while 42 per cent have smart phones? “While some may feel that
they need to keep up with modern modes of communication if they want to keep in touch with the younger generation, many more are actually turning to technology because they understand that it can help make their lives much easier. “We were amazed to discover that well over half of those we surveyed said they were comfortable using online banking to manage their finances, 88 per cent said they will use Google to find answers, and nearly half prefer GPS to a standard map. ‘’The image of granny struggling to send a text really does seem to be a thing of the past, with more and more pensioners learning to Skype, email and download on a daily basis.” The survey also found that 44 per cent had used the internet to research deals and utility quotes, 29 per cent to research days out and 25 per cent had booked a holiday online. Laptops were the most desired new piece of tech the group wanted. Jacqui added: “With so many services, information and social media online the internet is a fantastic tool for retirees – and a real godsend for anyone who may sometimes struggle to get out and about. “This survey confirms what
we’ve been experiencing among our homeowners. DESPITE the floods that affected much of the Westcountry earlier this year, demand for farmland across Devon and Cornwall remains as strong as ever. At Savills, this April we carried out a farmland value survey. Our figures suggest that, nationally, farmland values continue to increase as supply remains limited and demand continues. Average prime arable farmland values are estimated to have increased by 1.5 over the first quarter of this year. According to the same report, national supply remains an issue. However, there are always regional variations. In quarter one of 2014, 2,504 acres of land from nine farms were advertised in the South West, representing an increase of supply of four per cent compared to the same period of last year. While demand may not have been dampened by the floods, they have certainly had a profound impact on farmers’ bottom lines. Only time will tell if increased pressures on farm incomes and cash flows, particularly in the livestock sector, will lead to an increase in distress sales. Certainly, interest and viewings have been high across Westcountry farmland in the first quarter of this year. This has particularly been the case at Penhallow Farm in Cornwall

Barratt pledges to banish the bank holiday DIY blues
DIY projects are set to top the agenda this bank holiday weekend despite the fact that many end in disaster. A survey, by One Poll, has highlighted how busy people in Dawlish will be working on their homes over the May bank holiday â&#x20AC;&#x201C; even though more than 80 per cent of people said they would prefer to spend their time with friends or family, taking part in a leisure pursuit or just relaxing. Commissioned by housebuilder Barratt Homes, the report reveals that almost 50 per cent of people in the south west could be spending the bank holidays on a DIY project

Barrattâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Lee Monk said the report had been commissioned to investigate how much time, money and effort goes into DIY projects on second hand homes and while it was no surprise that DIY does not top the wish list of many, he said the scale of disasters was worrying. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We found that plumbing and electrical disasters were the most common,â&#x20AC;? said Lee. â&#x20AC;&#x153;And in addition to damaging homes it seems that people are also prone to injury with personal disasters ranging from falling off ladders to drilling into hands.â&#x20AC;?
