Spring into your new home search SPRING has long been regarded as the key time for househunters to come out of hibernation and look for a new home – and new research has confirmed this trend is set to continue this year. A study from five-star housebuilder Barratt Homes reveals more than 45 per cent of first-time buyers in Dawlish said they would be most likely to start their new home search in the spring, which was more popular than Easter, summer and the new year. “It seems the spring boost is more than just a housing myth,’’ said Barratt sales director Lee Monk. “Our research suggests that as soon as spring is under way people look to create their own nest and start the housing search.’’ And it seems that both men and women see spring as the best time to start househunting although at other times of the year men are more likely to look at homes in the summer while women are keener to have begun the search in the new year. This year’s spring boost is set to be one of the largest in recent years with increased confidence in the market and a raft of positive figures from the industry giving the local market a real boost. “It is clear that plenty of customers think now is a great time to take their next step on the property ladder,’’ said Lee.
“The availability and publicity around a five per cent deposit, low interest rate mortgages through schemes such as the Government-backed Help to Buy scheme, which has now been extended to 2020, have helped to create a surge in inquiries and we have been extremely busy with buyer inquiries.’’ Barratt currently has a range of homes available at its Dawlish development, The Buntings. ‘Help to Buy is having desired effect’ says city estate agent IN previous years people have been hesitant about moving, not knowing what the property market will do next and this in turn has given buyers less choice. The Help to Buy scheme has been instrumental in the rising number of properties instructed each month since it was launched. Micah Weekes of Weekes Estate Agents said: “Last week alone we had three full asking-price offers on the first day of viewings at a St Leonard’s townhouse. “The same week we had 12 viewings booked within 24 hours of releasing a two-bedroom terrace house to the market, in Heavitree’s popular Ladysmith Road. “This is the type of property that fits the firsttime buyer bracket and several couples were planning to use the Help to Buy scheme.” Despite controversy surrounding the government scheme one of the really positive aspects that has come out of Help to Buy is that it has got the housing market moving again.
