Auction raises more than £6000 for hospital MORE than £6000 was raised in a Grand Charity Auction held by a community group from Harbertonford and Harberton. The enterprise was undertaken to raise funds for The Ricky Grant Unit and Turner Ward of Torbay Hospital’s Cancer Services, and also to provide an event that the Village Hall could benefit from by providing food, a licensed bar and a raffle. The whole project took about four months to plan and promote by a committee that included people who have been treated for cancers at Torquay Hospital. People and businesses in the area were asked to donate raffle prizes and auction lots for sale. Thanks to their generosity, over 250 auction lots were received. The project culminated in the Grand Auction Event at the Harbertonford Village Hall on Saturday

July 12 and was attended by over 100 generous buyers. Auction lots included a sailing dinghy, a caravan, a mountain bike, replacement windows, a ferry crossing and restaurant vouchers as well as jewellery, pictures and tools, in fact something for everyone. The sale itself was run by Wood’s auctioneers, Richard Worrall and Nick Wood, who kindly gave up their Saturday to add that real auction feel and more than a touch of humour. The organisers designed a computer program to ensure the event ran smoothly, and overall, it proved to be a fun, bargain hunting day out. Woods would like to thank those who donated lots to sell as well as those who generously bought them a n d eve r yo n e wh o h e l p e d t o organise and run the event.

IF you want to escape from the hustle and bustle of town centre life there’s no more idyllic a place to visit or settle than Maidencombe, a picturesque village sitting pretty between Shaldon and Torquay just off the B3199. The unspoilt coastal village is skirted by woodland and open countryside, with some of the most superior detached properties set back off the main road, each unique in character. Among the winding country lanes heading down to the village can be found old farms, converted barns and picture postcard thatched cottages. Throughout the summer a steady stream of visitors head down to the village taking in the sweeping view of Lyme Bay over scattered rooftops and trees and to relax on the beach cloaked by dramatic red sandstone cliffs, which achieved the Seaside Award 2014 for the period May to September, where refreshments are available from the friendly Maidencombe Beach Cafe. The history of Maidencombe dates back to Norman times with agriculture the staple industry. In the village the Thatched Tavern which in the past incorporated a couple of tea rooms, is a classic example of a traditional pub. It’s near the village meadow, the pay-anddisplay car park; the orchards and the Old Court House Judas Tree, which is a reminder that Maidencombe was recorded in the Domesday Book.

The pub beer garden is a sight to behold, it was landscaped in the early 1980s and centred on a huge horse chestnut tree. Maidencombe is an attractive area for walkers with its Valley of the Rocks, Giant Rock roughly 150 feet high, Goat Path and Brunel Wood, with wooden sculptures which are the work of Keith Barrett. This was named after the famous GWR engineer, Isambard Kingdom Brunel, 1806-1859. He created Watcombe Park but died with the building of his house, Brunel Manor, still in its early stages. There are symbols of fire and water, which together produce steam — the driving force of the Victorian Age. The wood is a half wild nature park and Watcombe Beach is nearby. Rudyard Kipling lived in Maidencombe, at Rock House, for a brief period back in the 19th century and nowadays you will find the Blue Cross Cat Rehoming Centre in Moor Lane.

Spotlight on Maidencombe Area ticks all the boxes for Mick and Fiona FIONA and Mick Bruckin moved to Maidencombe and bought the Thatched Tavern four and half years ago. “The pub was the main draw for us,” said Mick “and the Devon people.” “Back in 2001 I used to live in Branscombe in East Devon and I knew when I left that one day I would return to Devon and when I did, it was a dream come true. “For us, the Thatched Tavern ticked

all the boxes: thatched roof, nice area, beach at the bottom of the road, car park, lovely gardens, coastal walks, nice people. “When the dog was a lot younger we used walk for miles all the way along the coastal path, up on the meadow and along The John Musgrove Trail. “Naturally, we welcome a lot of holiday makers at this time of year and we get a lot of people photographing the pub. We currently have about 20 hanging baskets and six or eight troughs all in beautiful bloom on display around the pub and mainly shrubs in the garden. We plant lots and lots of bulbs in Spring and about a thousand daffodils come up in May. “It’s a lovely setting for a wedding reception and many people from out of the area come for bed and breakfast and comment on how quiet it is in the night time, saying they have had the best night’s sleep ever as many are used to living in the town. “Maidencombe is idyllic. It is an idyllic place to live and to visit.”

Property Choose cool colours for the summer months

It can alter the theme of a room, direct the mood and even manipulate the size. If used correctly, with a bit of careful thought and consideration you can create anything! One of the first things to consider about colour is whether it is warm or cool. Warm hues, like reds, yellows and oranges, have the ability to make things advance; that is, they can make walls appear closer, and create a cosy atmosphere. This can be especially effective if a sense of space is not as important to the room.

Blues and greens are cool colours and can make walls recede. This can create the impression that a room is bigger than it actually is. With this in mind, a carefully considered colour pallet can help alter even the most oddly proportioned room. Out of the primary colours, blue is one of the easiest to use in a colour scheme, partly due to the ease with which it can be partnered with other colours. Due to its coolness, it can sometimes give a formal quality to a room, but can also be used to create space and calmness. White is its traditional partner, and when used together, they can create a look that is both fresh and vital as well as being timeless. Add accents of red to blue rooms to create a bold contrast, or hints of green to add a more natural and calming look. The next primary colour, yellow, can be one of the most vibrant and cheerful colours available. Used in a well balanced monochromatic scheme, it is strong enough to produce a substantial impact but without being overpowering. It's warming qualities make it ideal for taking the edge off a chilly bathroom, while maintaining a fresh, vibrant feeling. Lighter tones of yellow, creams and ivory, are a great background canvas for smaller rooms, offering warmth and space. Of the three primary colours, red can be the trickiest but it can also be the boldest and most powerful. Associated with love and passions, it can make a huge statement, but too much can be daunting and overpowering. If you're afraid of overdoing it, try it as an accent with some cushions or curtain edges. Because of its richness, it is often associated with regal and traditional looks, and looks beautiful in heavy draping, accented with golds and luxuri-

ous patterns. Tones of red (varying shades of pink), can also make stunning accents and because of their prominence in nature's flowers, look amazing when mixed with tones of green. Green is one of the most versatile colours you can use. Because it is created by mixing two opposite colours on the colour wheel, it is a very balanced hue, and very natural. Like the numerous greens found together in nature, it is very easy to mix different tones and shades of green. If you have a shade with a very yellow base, such as lime, it can be hugely refreshing and uplifting, bringing an optimistic and vibrant mood into a room. Create a more restful atmosphere with blue based greens like aquamarine. This makes it an ideal colour to use in a bedroom scheme. Purple is a secondary shade, and because it is made from mixing cool and warm primary colours, depending on the strength in its base, it can appear as either in a room. It’s richer, deeper shades are often associated with royalty and the church, making a great colour for a formal or luxurious setting, while its paler tones can create a much softer atmosphere. Use tones of violet and lilac to give an air of tranquillity and sensuality, and in rooms dedicated to relaxation and contemplation. In this kind of setting, paler violets can look amazing when mixed with other pastel colours. Whatever colours you choose, putting thought into your scheme, what you are trying to create and hope to achieve, can ensure you have room that looks incredible and functions to its maximum potential.

Lettings Private sector tenants increasingly satisfied with their properties LANDLORD Assist is pleased to learn that there has been an increase in the number of tenants satisfied with their rental accommodation. The 2012-13 English Housing Survey ‘Households Report’ has revealed that over 80 per cent of tenants are satisfied with the quality of their accommodation, a one per cent increase from the 2011-12 report. Graham Kinnear, managing director at Landlord Assist says: “Landlords are an easy target in the media, with stories of rogue behaviour, revenge evictions and poor accommodation. However, this survey shows that more landlords than ever before are providing good quality accommodation for their tenants. “We had concerns that with a reduction in the amount of available rental stock in the marketplace that standards may have slipped in the industry given the ease with which they can currently let. “Thankfully this appears not to be the case with increasing numbers of landlords pleasing their tenants.” Landlord Assist believes that legislative changes have also helped to increase tenant satisfaction in recent years. Stephen Parry, commercial director at Landlord Assist says: “Building regulations are stricter nowadays so new or refurbished properties are better insulated, more economic

to run and generally better than the property stock of 20 years ago.” The survey also showed that in 2012-13 the 4 million households in England’s private rented sector paid an average of £163 a week for their homes, an increase of £10 since 2008-9. Stephen Parry adds: “The average rent is now around £160 per week which is only a seven per cent increase on five years ago meaning that, allowing for inflation, rents have fallen in real terms. This busts the myth of tenants being victims of greedy landlords and high prices forcing tenants to be stuck in a rent trap. “Whilst many people may have no choice but to rent their home, the reality is that it is more likely to be banks’ lending restrictions and the higher cost of food and energy bills that are to blame and not the high prices charged by landlords. ” Landlord Assist provides advice and services to landlords and letting agents to ensure they stay the right side of the legislation.
