ANDREW POOLEY Managing Director of Dartmouth Steam Railway & River Boat Company gives us an insight into what it is like working at Kingswear Signal Box ANDREW Pooley says, “Our offices are right on the quayside in Kingswear with views over the railway and the River Dart. “Sitting at my desk overlooking this spectacle means I can observe the life of the river from an elevated position. “It’s brilliant to hear the first train of the day as it approaches the Higher Ferry and the chatter on the radio tells of crews arranging the ferries to clear the queue which often means transporting 1,000 people a day across to Dartmouth. “We also get to hear the exchange of whistles between the paddle steamer Kingswear Castle in the centre of the river as she “talks” to the steam train leaving Long Wood on its approach to Kingswear (they have quite a competition some- VIEW FROM THE OFFICE: Across the River Dart from Kingswear Signal Box times to see who can whistle the best tune!). “Later in the morning we see the boats coming round from Torbay bringing yet more passengers to the town and it has been known to see a dolphin swimming in the bow wave of our boats or ferries. “It’s easy to forget that it is a working port but the crab lorries remind you that their catch is distributed all over Europe. “Regatta week sees a forest of masts and it feels as though the river is overflowing with boats of all sizes — some competing in the regatta and some just here for pleasure. They (and we) all have a great view of the air displays and fireworks! “Working here also allows us to appreciate the changing seasons and when driving to work via the road down from Hillhead, the view on the approach to the office still takes your breath away — and the twinkle and sparkle on the water in the afternoon as the sun lowers over Dartmouth is a fantastic close to any day. “I’m often asked how I concentrate but the phone never stops and responsibility and will power play their part too!”

ALTHOUGH UK GDP levels are reported to have finally hit pre-crisis levels, new data from the UK’s number one property website Rightmove reveals that asking prices in Wales and the majority of counties in the north of England are lower than the pre-crisis peak in May 2008. National new seller asking prices peaked at £242,500 back in May 2008 before falling to a low of £213,570 in January 2009. In August 2014 national asking prices were up by 8.2 per cent compared with the May 2008 peak, to £262,401. Yet north of the Midlands all counties except Cheshire and North Yorkshire have reported a decline, with the biggest decrease occurring in County Durham, down 13.4 per cent to £114,554. The data shows that nearly all of the national house price growth has come from London and the South, with all areas of the capital up at least 30 per cent when compared to May 2008. Central London has seen dramatic growth, up 41.9 per cent to £1,512,555, followed by West London up 41.7 per cent to £564,192. While every element of a space contributes to the whole effect, it is possible to completely change the mood or theme of a room with just a few small products. Accessorising is also a brilliant, and relatively cost and time effective way of

refreshing somewhere, without having to go through a full makeover. So if you are bored of your room, or you know you want a new look but don’t know what you want, consider playing around with things on a smaller scale and see where it leads you! One of the first ways to take on accessorising is through your soft furnishings and upholstery. A piece of furniture, and consequently a whole room, can be given a breath of fresh air with some new fabric applied. In the same way, cushions can completely revamp an old sofa or chair. In fact, cushions can be the most simple, but effective way of revitalising the personality of a room. Readily available from a huge selection of shops, or bespoke from an endless supply of fabric houses, there is such a great variety of colours and textures, there really is a cushion to suit every taste. Create interest by varying sizes and shapes. Consider using ornamentation and embellishment on smaller cushions, as appropriate for your desired look. Cushions can be the perfect way to introduce new colours into a room, but if you desire to keep one colour, add contrast by using various textures and fabrics. Whether you want masculine or feminine, relaxed or formal, clean lines or pattern, you can find something that will work perfectly. Due to the ease of which you can change them, consider seasonal cushions too; light silks and linens for summer, and switching to rich and cosy wools and velvets for the upcoming colder months. Be sure to fill them well, and make sure you go for hypoallergenic fillings if you suffer from allergies! Throws are another great way of adding colour and textural interest to a room, and are even more appropriate with the impending onset of the colder months. Create lines and order with neatly folded throws, or soften the feel of a room with flowing, draped throws over chairs, sofas and beds.

When it comes to walls, remember they are not just there for wallpaper and paint. Mirrors are a great way of softening a bedroom that you don’t want to be too masculine or overly feminine. They also add light by reflecting it around smaller spaces, helping to manipulate special issues in smaller rooms. There are so many beautiful pieces available now that a statement mirror can create an amazing focal point in a room, in the same way a piece of art can. When considering a piece of art to display, decide what effect you wish to create. Are you going for a huge statement piece that will become a talking point, or are you hoping your chosen piece will contribute to an atmosphere of calm and relaxation? Whatever you choose, remember that regardless of the height of the room, art should be displayed so the centre part of your piece is at eye-level, allowing it to be its most powerful and obvious. Floors and ceilings do not have to be neglected when it comes to accessories. A new pendant light can create a beautiful centre point in any room, and depending on which shade you choose, can scatter or soften your light to have a totally new atmosphere. A bold rug can add vitality and life to a floor that might have seen better days. Consider the placement of these items, as they tend to draw the eye to them when entering a room, making them perfect items to use if you want to centre your room or split it into zones. Bearing these things in mind, one of the easiest ways to completely change your space is by simply moving your furniture around! Whatever you decide, there are endless ways in which you can make a completely new living area, without ever lifting a paintbrush or changing your main furniture. Just be creative and take risks, it is the perfect way to do so!

Consider dahlias FOR all types of garden, large or small, laid to lawn or the merest patio, there are many ways of making your outdoor space attractive to buyers, and one of the easiest and most colo u r f u l i s t o h a v e a display of dahlias. Dahlias originated from Mexico, where they were cultivated by the Aztecs. They were discovered and described by the Spanish early in the sixteenth century, but it was not until 1789 that botanist Vicente Cervantes sent samples of ‘acocotl’ from Mexico City to the Royal Botanic Garden in Madrid. Here the plants were examined and brought to flower by botanist Abbe Cavanilles, who in 1791 named them ‘dahlias’ in honour of the eminent Swedish botanist, Anders Dahl, who had died in 1789. The Empress Josephine grew dahlias at her garden at Malmaison in France during the 1790s, and dahlias soon became the fashion all over Europe with botanists discovering

a n d d eve l o p i n g n ew va r i e t i e s throughout the 19th century. ‘'Dahlia walks’ became popular with the Victorians, whilst in Gertrude Jeykll’s own garden at Munstead Wood, the summer borders were ‘backed up with dahlias and lateflowerers to carry the garden into September and early October’. Border and bedding dahlias are divided into nine main g roups, ranging from the ‘single flowered’, ‘anemone’ and ‘collerette’ types, to the wonderful ‘water-lily’ type and the magnificent ‘decorative’ type, with massive double-flowered blooms the size of dinner plates. Then there are dahlias of the large ‘ball’ type, with flower heads up to 6 inches (15cms) across, and the small ball-like ‘pompom’ or ‘drumstick’ type. Groups eight and nine are the ‘cactus’ and ‘semi-cactus’ types with pointed ray florets, while the tenth group, ‘miscellaneous’, comprises all those flower forms that do not belong to the other nine groups.
