Advice: Keeping up with your payments after Christmas

HRISTMAS is a special time, with families and friends coming together to celebrate, eat, drink and exchange gifts. However, unexpected and spiralling costs during the festive people can leave some riddled with debt – so much so that more than three-million Brits fear they will miss their rent or mortgage payments this month. A study by Shelter, the housing and homelessness charity, suggests that one in nine homeowners or renters (11 per cent) are worried about being able to meet housing costs in January, equating to 3.2-million people nationwide. The organisation revealed that it has seen a surge in the number of people visiting its website for advice on rent and mortgage arrears, and urges anyone having difficulty meeting their housing costs to get help as early as possible. Some 59 per cent of more than 2,300 rent or mortgage payers surveyed in November said they were already struggling to keep up with their housing costs. Chris Knapman, of the Mortgage Guy Ltd, said: “The majority of homeowners know that a mortgage is the one thing they must pay. Many may have a blip ion the credit card, particularly during the festive period, but generally they are well organised. “Obviously, we deal with people whose personal circumstances are very different. Credit reports might show they were late with their payment in January. The main reason is that they were a bit short of money after Christmas, and generally the amount is eventually paid in full.” Samantha Powell, lettings manager at Haart’s branch on Mutley Plain, said: “Some tenants do have problems paying their rent after Christmas, and it’s mainly because they prioritise other things. “There is obvious an increase in people not being able to pay after the festive period. We have a backlog and have to clear it. “My advice to tenants is that they should pay their rent before they pay anything else. If they are struggling to meet payments, make contact with your agent who, in turn, will then be able to liaise with the landlord Ignoring phone-calls or not making them can make it a lot worse; by talking about it, a tenant and a landlord can often come to some sort of agreement.” Shelter said that as well as seeking help, those who are struggling should always aim to make their mortgage or rent payments their “number one priority” and they should take action to deal with any other debts such as credit cards and phone bills separately. MORE than 24 years after the release of hit film Home Alone, fans have been given a glimpse inside one of the most iconic houses in movie history. THE average mortgage deposit from ‘the bank of mum and dad’ is now £18,505. Research from a study by nationwide solicitors, Slater & Gordon Lawyers, suggests one in seven parents are in debt after helping their children get on to the property ladder. The research, for which more than 500 parents who had helped their children buy a home were polled, indicated that nearly half felt obliged or pressured to do so, with two thirds saying their children could not have done it without them.

ACCORDING to research by plot-finding website, PotSearch, Devon was the most searched-for county in the UK to build a new home, ahead of the Scottish Highlands and Kent respectively. In 2014 there were 18,500 online plot searches carried out for the county. The Somerset and Avon area was sixth on the list, with Cornwall ninth.

How to get proper cosy this winter with a carpet I

F THE recent rainy days and cold and windy nights haven’t made you want to snuggle up in a cosy, warm room, then I don’t know what will! If you are anything like me, spending lots of time indoors will give you the perfect opportunity and excuse to revamp and freshen up your home. One of the most effective ways of doing this is through your flooring, and this time of year – when cosiness and comfort are high points in the priority list – carpet can be an ideal option. Carpet can go easily in most living spaces and will instantly add a feeling of homeliness to the room. Due to the softening quality it possesses, it is ideal for bedrooms, lounges, snugs, cinema rooms and playrooms for young children. If you’re the kind of person who likes to change your colour schemes often, carpet is ideal as it is easy to pull up and is free from a lot of the messy, heavy work that comes with changing wooden or tiled floors. When it comes to considering carpet, there are a few factors you should take into consideration. Try to avoid carpet in wet rooms, like bathrooms or kitchens. If you are installing it in a high-traffic area, such as an entrance hallway or corridor, make sure you pick a durable, easy-clean product. If you have pets or small children, look for carpets which are bleachable. This means that the colour of the carpet is woven into the fibres of it, and wont fade if you have to bleach stains and spills (incidentally, making it the perfect quality for wine lovers, too!). Under-floor heating can be used safely and easily with carpet, but you must use underlay that is suitable for this type of heating. You must also check the tog rating of both your underlay and carpet, as some products can be too thick and will prevent the heat from coming through to your feet. Underlay is one of the most important factors when it comes to carpet choices. Without it, carpet will not last and looks unfinished. Since a good finish and longevity are imperative to the success of a floor, underlay becomes a must-have. Coming in different densities, the most common thickness of underlay is between eight and 10 mm. Make sure your carpet-fitter is aware how thick your choice is, as special grippers may be needed. While most underlay is foam, there are options with rubber crumb and felt and, for the environmentally conscious, some is made from 100 per cent recycled material. Once you’ve established the underlay you will use, the fun of choosing your carpet can begin! When choosing colours, consider the uses. Be bold in cinema rooms, using rich purples, deep reds or anthracites. Choose neutrals for children’s rooms, like soft greys and mushroom shades, which will allow you to easily alter your colour schemes with their changing personalities and tastes. For something a bit different, consider using carpet binding for a stair-runner. This is when carpet is bound in a thick, leather contrast, which will add instant luxury and interest to a staircase. Five ways to: Fix those pesky draughts

Fit special weatherstripping tape to make windows less draughty. Weatherstripping (typically self-adhesive foam tape) helps to fill the gap between the frame and the moving part of the window. The same tape can be used on exterior doors. Bear in mind though, original sash windows are notoriously draughty, and you may prefer to get a pro to draught-proof and refurbish them more thoroughly.

Minimise draughts at the bottom of an exterior door with a brush-style strip - simply cut it to fit and screw it in place, but don't fit it too low or it will drag on the floor. Exterior doors should also be fitted with keyhole and letterbox covers to stop cold air coming in.

For extra insulation at this time of year, fit a curtain pole above an exterior door and hang a heavy curtain across it, especially if the door is partially or fully glazed.

Interior doors should be draught-proofed if they lead to a room that isn't heated. Keep the door closed so the cold air stays in the unheated room, and block any gap at the bottom of the door with a fabric 'sausage' draught excluder.

Chimneys can be a source of draughts, so if you have an unused fireplace, get the chimney capped on the roof (by a roofer) and fit a chimney balloon, which inflates inside the chimney to keep warm air in the room and block cold air coming down the chimney - just make sure you remove the balloon before using the fireplace.
