Naming ceremony
Market on the up?
London calling
Schoolchildren have chosen the name for Taylor Wimpey’s new housing development in Perranporth, Cornwall. The pupils (pictured) of Perranporth School were asked to suggest names for the development of 120 new homes. The winning suggestion was Parc Hendrawna. ‘Parc’ means ‘park or field’ in Cornish, while four children suggested the name Hendrawna, after Hendrawna Lane, which is the old track leading from Perranporth to the hamlet of Bolingey. The four pupils each received a £10 book token, while the housebuilder also gave a £50 book token to the school.
House prices in the South West rose by 0.3% in the past month, according to property website Home.co.uk. The research found that the increase in the region’s house prices over the past year was 5%, with the average asking price £268,800. London has seen the sharpest increases, with prices rising 18.9% in the past year, while the Scottish market shows no sign of recovery. The South West also saw a fall in the time houses are on the market before selling. It’s now an average of 116 days, making this the third most active region outside London for property sales.
Stags Estate Agency recently took its Westcountry Property Roadshow up to the Home Counties. The event, which was held in Farnham, Surrey, saw a strong turnout, and resulted in many house viewings being booked. The roadshow is aimed at househunters wishing to find out more about properties in the Westcountry Stags will also be attending the Move to the Country Show on March 27 in London. It is to be held at the Battersea Arts Centre, London. If you would like Stags to promote your property at this event contact your local office or visit www.stags.co.uk.

Abbey Lodge was built in 1868 as a chapel for the historical Royal Navy base in Plymouth. The chapel has been transformed into a striking four-bedroom home set in 26 acres of communal landscaped grounds in the heart of Plymouth. On sale for £825,000, it is part of an extensive development of converted Grade ll and Grade ll*
listed stone buildings which once formed a hospital for the Royal Navy, dating back to the 1760s. The Chapel was built using the best materials available at the time, with external walls of cut limestone and sandstone quoins. The present owners undertook a major programme to convert and restore the chapel in 2000, including high-
quality double glazing and underfloor heating. The result is a spectacular house. All four bedrooms have en-suite bath or shower rooms and the principal bedroom has a fitted dressing room. For more details, call Marchand Petit on 01548 857588 or visit www.marchandpetit.co.uk

The three-bedroom Hob Nob, above, is the largest of the barns in the holiday complex
Spacious and tastefully decorated, the sitting room at Hob Nob provides guests with an ideal place to relax
This week’s star property is both a home and thriving business all in one, set in beautiful countryside in South East Cornwall. The largest of the six properties here is a Grade II listed farmhouse, which dates back to the Domesday Book. It has been recently completely renovated in lovely taste. There are also five luxury holiday barn conversions, generating a healthy year-round income. The property comes with six acres of picturesque countryside. The farmhouse and barns at Duloe, which make up this holiday hamlet, are the result of painstaking work by owners Jo Somerset-Wood and her partner Mike Harvey, who have transformed the property since they bought it in 2007. Jo and Mike are property developers, specialising in historic buildings in Cornwall. “This farm had been in the same family for 140 years,” says Jo. “It really was a wreck when we took it on, and needed complete renovation. We also had the planning process to go through to get permission to convert all the barns, which was complicated – to say the least. It’s been a labour of love but the end result is absolutely worth all the hours we have put in over the years.” The former owner of the farm is 96 now and still living nearby. “He is really delighted with what we have been able to do here,” says Jo. “Just the other day, he said to me: ‘It’s so nice to see the old place smiling again,’ which was just the nicest thing to hear.” The Old Farmhouse itself is Grade
Becky Sheaves finds a lovely home with a thriving business in South East Cornwall II listed and recorded in the Domesday Book. It has four bedrooms, two of which have en-suite bathrooms, as well as an enclosed garden with views across a rural valley. This property has many character features including slate floors, exposed beams and vaulted ceilings. Jo and Mike are using it for holiday letting purposes, but it could be ideal for private family accommodation, with the remaining barns providing income. Hob Nob, the largest of the barns, has full residential planning permission, which could also provide an ideal opportunity for extended family occupancy. Each barn has its own individual contemporary design and collectively they have
About the area

The farmhouse and barns: lie between Pelynt and Duloe in South East Cornwall, two historic villages with pubs, shops and schools. Foodie heaven: Duloe has a wellregarded gastropub called The Plough. There is also a good independent butcher’s shop in the village called O’Keefe’s, which attracts customers from a wide area. Pub visits: Pelynt has a popular local pub called The Jubilee Inn. More eateries and pubs can be found nearby, especially in Fowey, Polruan and Polperro. Walking and riding: The South West Coastal Path is three miles
from the property, with many excellent footpaths and bridleways closer still. Best beaches: Lansallos Cove is the nearest beach, about three miles from the farmhouse. It is a charming and unspoilt sandy cove. Schools: The primary school at Duloe is “good” according to Ofsted. Secondary education at Looe Community School is also “good” while the private schooling and grammar schools in Plymouth are within reach, too. Well connected? Plymouth is an easy commute and it is not far to the A30 or A38. The London train stops at Liskeard and Lostwithiel.

Restoring the farmhouse and barns and creating a holiday hamlet has been a labour of love for the owners, Jo Somerset-Wood and her partner Mike Harvey, who bought the property in 2007 won several prestigious industry awards. They are also categorised as Gold 5* by Visit England, the highest standard possible of self-catering accommodation. The farm has also won an award as the Best SelfCatering Establishment, both in Cornwall and the whole of the South West The property – farmhouse and four holiday lets, plus six acres of land – can be bought as a whole for £1.45 million. Alternatively, you can buy just the five barns for £800,000. Given that the largest barn, Hob Nob, has three double bedrooms and full residential planning permission, it could be lived in as a permanent home, with an impressive income from the other four holiday barns. Or, if this would suit a prospective purchaser better, the farmhouse and one of the holiday lets, called Blackberry Barn, can be bought for £650,000. Blackberry Barn is a detached holiday let, with two bedrooms. Rainbow Cottage is attached to Hob Nob and has two bedrooms. There is also Honey Pot, which has two bedrooms, and Spice Barn, with one bedroom. All are renovated and decorated to what Jo describes as “luxury hotel standard”. Jo and Mike have very much enjoyed running the property as a holiday let business, which has proved very successful for them. “People absolutely love it here,” says Jo. “It is so peaceful, the properties offer real rural luxury and the

Stylish and spacious, the kitchen in the main farmhouse is warm and welcoming location is superb too. We are set in lovely countryside, with the coast at Fowey and Polperro within easy reach.” However, the couple are keen to get on with what Jo describes as their “core business”, which is renovating and developing properties. So they are looking forward to moving on and starting another project. “We will still live nearby though, as we love it here. I’m very into my horses and the outriding around Duloe is so good. We have fantastic tracks and bridleways, it
really is second-to-none,” says Jo. Among the many innovations which have won the farm awards both regionally and nationally is a luxurious pamper room, staffed by local therapists, which is a real draw for visitors in search of de-stressing. Another bonus is the outdoor hot tub. Jo and Mike have also created a charming walk in the three-acre woodlands that come with the property. “The woodland walk is so delightful at this time of year. Every day more primroses and bluebells
are coming out there,” says Jo. They have also transformed one of the paddocks into a sunbathing, stargazing and barbecuing area for their visitors, with comfy outdoor seating. “A local astronomer gives talks on stargazing at night-time, which is really magical for the guests here.” All in all, this is a property offering exciting prospects to house hunters in search of home, income and a very special lifestyle, too. Gardening for all, Becky Sheaves finds out why Trago Mills owner Bruce Robinson is so proud of his Garden Park Bruce Robertson, owner of Trago Mills, loves gardens. So perhaps it is no surprise that he has built a garden centre at his Newton Abbot flagship store on what can only be described as a very grand scale. The landscaped 15 acre Trago Mills Garden Park, which is tucked behind the main shopping centre, offers everything you could possibly need for your garden. From real live pet guineapigs to gravel, camellias to climbing frames, this is a garden centre that offers just about everything you could possibly want, all at the famously competitive Trago Mills prices. Now in its fifth year, the Garden Park is, Bruce freely admits, his pride and joy. “We really did put everything we could into its construction, with no expense or trouble spared. I wanted the Garden Park to be a useful, practical place where gardeners could buy all their supplies. But it’s so much more than that too – I wanted it to be a place that is a true inspiration as well. “Gardening is a huge part of what makes life in the Westcountry so special. Our Garden Park is all about making horticulture, in every shape and form, easy and creative for all our customers.” To this end, the Garden Park has two enormous covered shopping areas, where you can buy all sorts of things from tools to live pets, ornaments and much more. Then there is a spacious outdoor amphitheatre packed with a wealth of strong, wellgrown and top quality plants. Alongside this is an innovation of which Bruce is particularly proud – a drive-through supplies area. “You can come in your car and buy things
like gravel, peat, compost and so on without having to get out of your car. It saves so much time, not to mention back-ache.” There is even a weighbridge for customers buying large quantities of gardening materials. And the drive-
‘Our show gardens are intended to offer a real haven for our shoppers’ through experience extends to all of the Garden Park. You can load up your trolley and it will be totted up at the tills while you collect your car, then when you come round in your car, all of your shopping is ready to be loaded – by helpful Trago Mills staff – into your car. “It’s all about making shopping for these often heavy, bulky items so much simpler,” explains Bruce. “You just drive in, follow the signs and we do the rest.” But perhaps the most remarkable part of the Garden Park is the range of beautiful show gardens which have been created to inspire visitors. The renowned Westcountry garden designer and multiple Chelsea Gold Medal winner, Paul Stone, has cre-
ated havens of tranquillity with a range of ten stunning, individuallythemed gardens for visitors to explore and enjoy. As well as his many successes at Chelsea Flower Show, Paul has also twice won “Best in Show” awards for his gardens at Hampton Court Flower Show and is a familiar face on BBC TV’s Gardeners’ World. Paul, who lives and gardens in Falmouth, Cornwall, has created all sorts of fascinating and unusual show gardens for the Trago Mills Garden Park. You’ll find everything from a “Canal Street Garden” with a genuine canal barge floating in water, to an authentic Japanese garden complete with azaleas, fullsized pagoda and charming red lacquered bridge. “Our show gardens are intended to

You can wander in among them and have a rest or even a picnic,” says Bruce. “The main shopping area of Trago’s can be a busy, bustling place but our show gardens are relaxed and tranquil. There’s no hard sell in this area at all. “The show gardens are purely about offering visitors the enjoyment of being in the fresh air amid
some wonderful examples of truly top-class garden design. I truly think that these show gardens are what puts our Garden Park into a league of its own,” says Bruce. Why Cadhay just
Becky Sheaves discovers what needs to be done at a 13-bedroom 16th century Devon manor house on changeover day Cadhay is a 16th century manor house that sits protected by its own parkland and beautiful gardens on the rural edge of Ottery St Mary in East Devon. To the visitor, this beautiful silvery-grey stately home exudes tranquillity and calm. For house manager Jayne Covell and her team of cleaners, however, changeover day at Cadhay is nothing short of a hive of activity. “We arrive at 9.30am and hit the ground running,” explains Jayne, who has been house manager at Cadhay for six years. “One of our cleaners cleans the kitchen and scullery. We have two ladies solely on bedmaking and laundry – we have three large washing machines and three dryers on the go all day. And the others clean the 13 bedrooms, nine bathrooms and all the reception rooms, too.” If you have a holiday home, you’ll have an inkling of the pressure Jayne and her team are under. The main house at Cadhay, which sleeps 22, needs to be sparkling and immaculate in time for the next arrival of guests. What’s more, the house is also open to the public for guided tours on Friday afternoons. So all the cleaning has to be done – and very thoroughly dusted – by 1.30 pm. “Our standards are very high,” says Jayne. “Everything in the kitchens, every cup, glass and spoon, is checked and re-washed. We want it all to be absolutely perfect for our guests.” Cadhay first opened as a holiday home ten years ago and three conversions – The Cider Press, The Stables and The Coach House – have also been introduced over the years since then. Listed by Country Life as ‘one of the top ten manor houses in the country’, Cadhay is owned by Rupert Thistlethwayte, who inherited it in 2002 from his uncle. Cadhay is constructed around its central Court of the Sovereigns, overlooked by four carved images of the
Tudor monarchs. The Georgian dining room was created in 1739 by inserting a lower ceiling in the original Great Hall and can seat up to 22. The large kitchen with an Aga is a real hub for visitors, says Jayne. “The
Cadhay combines the grandeur of aristocratic Elizabethan living with 21st century comforts smell of bacon frying in the morning usually gets everyone downstairs in their dressing gowns. We’ve even had marriage proposals in the kitchen. And many brides say that their breakfast there, with their hair in rollers and all surrounded by their bridesmaids, is the perfect start to their wedding day.” Upstairs, there is a splendid Long Gallery, added in the reign of Elizabeth 1. The Roof Chamber, with its impressive beamed ceiling, is one of Cadhay’s venues for civic marriage ceremonies. “You can also get married in a little building in the garden called The Bothy,” says Jayne. Thanks to owner Rupert’s decadelong project of updating and renovating Cadhay, this property now combines the grandeur of aristocratic Elizabethan living with all 21st century comforts. The house comes with
a wealth of period and contemporary features, such as stone fireplaces, leaded windows, with beautiful antique furniture and paintings. “Our guests are just thrilled that Cadhay is available for people to stay in, as it is unique,” says Jayne. Today, the property hosts around 15 weddings a year, and is open for hire all year round. “We have lots of family groups,” says Jayne. “We are a real favourite for get-togethers of several generations for wedding anniversaries or special birthdays.” And the house and grounds are also a special place for more local visitors, too. Part of the walled garden is now devoted to an impressive range of allotments, tended by local veg growers. The gardens themselves are spectacular and have two full-time gardeners. As well as the regular
Previously let successfully as a holiday home, this lovely, large farmhouse accommodates up to 12 people, has a beautiful outdoor swimming pool. It is in a really easily accessible spot for exploring both Dartmoor and the Devon coast. I estimate it could generate an income of around £40,500 per year. Ask the experts Your holiday let questions answered Q. We plan to have a Sunday ‘change-over’ day for our holiday cottage. Do you think this will be popular with holidaymakers? – JB, Wadebridge A. Gill Nicholls, property manager for Helpful Holidays, says: It is best to avoid a Sunday change-over if you can. Statistically, Saturday is the most popular change-over day for selfcatering properties, with Friday a close second. A Friday or Saturday arrival coincides neatly with the end of the working week and logistically makes weekend short break bookings easier to arrange. After their holiday many people prefer a day or two to unpack their cases (pictured below) and catch up with washing etc before returning to work or school on Monday. Furthermore, if you discover maintenance issues between bookings, you may find it difficult to locate a tradesperson to resolve them on a Sunday. However, there will of course be some people who can’t arrive on a Friday or Saturday so prefer an alternative option and travelling can be quieter on a Sunday. So, particularly if your cottage is designed for a couple, a Sunday change-over is acceptable if you find an alternative day difficult.
Cadhay, above and below, dates back to the 1500s. It can be hired for weekends or longer stays, and also hosts weddings Friday garden opening (with tea and cakes) between May and September, Cadhay is also open to the public for a full week at the end of May hosting half-a-dozen or more charity open garden events. Caring for such a historic and large property is a job that requires you to be both organised and flexible, as Jayne explains. “I do everything from showing around prospective wedding couples to replacing the light bulbs, she says. “Rupert, too, is very hands-on – he’s the one who repairs broken furniture or sets about unblocking the drains. So it’s not all glamour, then, working in a stately home? “Oh no, says Jayne with a smile. “And it is very hard work too. Several of our cleaners say that having a job here means they don’t have to go to the gym. It is very physical. But it is so rewarding to be part of making Cadhay a vibrant part of the community. “Whether our guests have come for
an afternoon in the garden, or the wedding of a lifetime, we hope they will go away with special memories of a truly beautiful place. The main house at Cadhay is available to rent through Helpful Holidays, with prices for the main house
starting at between ÂŁ3,145 for a week. Cadhay is also available to hire for weekend stays, with prices from ÂŁ2,246.

Q. We have a private water supply at the house. Will this be a problem for holiday letting? – BK, Chard A. Melanie Cassidy, property manager for Helpful Holidays, says: Most commonly found in remote, rural areas, a private water supply comes from a local source such as a well, borehole, spring or stream, as opposed to a ‘mains’ supply provided by a water company. The Private Water Supplies Regulations 2009 apply to all private water supplies intended for human consumption and domestic purposes (ie drinking, cooking, food preparation, washing). It’s fine to have a private water supply in your holiday cottage, but it must be tested by an accredited analyst at least once a year to prove it meets the minimum required potable standard. South West Water provides an inexpensive basic potable water
testing service. At Helpful Holidays we keep a copy of our property owners’ water test results so we can send a reminder when the annual test is due. You can find further advice about private water supplies on the Defra website or from the environmental health department of your local authority.
Q. Now there seems to be a small uplift in the recession, are holiday lets a viable earner? – MG, Mevagissey A. Bev Plunkett, property manager for Helpful Holidays, says: Yes, definitely, and holiday letting continued to be a good investment throughout the economic downturn, which resulted in more people holidaying within the UK than previously. In Cornwall especially there are considerably more holiday lets now than there were ten years ago. People are investing in property to holiday let as a source of income. For those who inherit a property and wish to keep it in the family, generating income from holiday letting can make the property a viable asset and assure its future. Here at Helpful Holidays, we are always happy to give advice on the potential income achievable from a specific property, whether you already own the property or are considering a purchase. With the right type of property, holiday cottage letting continues to provide a reliable source of income. Making tomorrow’s The way is shut. The Middle Earth words echo bizarrely in my ears as I contemplate the expanse of surging tidal water that separates me from the farm premises that houses handcrafted furniture makers Young and Norgate. I’ve barreled my way across a sodden Devon towards Budleigh Salterton, to visit the up-and-coming design duo, but I appear to be thwarted in the very last mile. I put in a damsel-in-distress call to the workshop, and they promise to dispatch someone to meet me at a safe point to guide me around the tide. New Zealand-born Dave Young arrives in a Land Rover and I am led on a route that, even with the skies, river and sea in a temper, reminds me that Devon is an undeniably gorgeous place to live. Inspiration is clearly in plentiful supply, and Young & Norgate haven’t let a drop go to waste, as evidenced by their growing stack of achievements including a Furniture Makers Design Guildmark, a coveted Bespoke Guildmark and an invitation to exhibit at the upcoming Design Shanghai event in China. Upon arrival, Dave leads me into a characterful brick structure, and my first sensory experience upon entry is the slightly sweet and earthy scent of sawdust. “This is where we transform the wood,” says Dave in his distinctive lilt. Several refurbished 1950s and 60s machines stand to attention under his gaze. “They don’t make beds like this anymore,” he muses, patting a machine’s surface as one would a faithful steed. In all, there are no fewer than eight pieces of machinery stabled in the lower level. A craftsman brings one to life and the low roar that ensues sees us on our way. The wood store is our next stop, where slabs of rough and elemental timber lie awaiting the expert touch of the team. Dave strokes an expanse of walnut lovingly. “A large part of our craft is being able to select wood, and we put a lot of care into ensuring a piece is at once characterful, robust and luxurious,” he says. We ascend the staircase, and here I
Kathryn Clarke-Mcleod discovers a place in Devon where wood is lovingly transformed into luxurious furniture meet Ross Norgate in a high-ceilinged workspace with exposed beams. It’s the first time I view the two as a pair, and as we talk it becomes evident why the results of their signature blend have become design classics. Dave’s appreciation of functional and aesthetically superior design was born when he won a scholarship to study in Copenhagen after school. “I
What emerges from these workshops is, quite simply, breath-taking share their ethos that design should be considered,” says Dave. “There should be no compromise; something that looks good should work just as well.” Ross is Devon born, and immediately comes across as an individual who possesses the rare ability to combine an unswerving practical streak with unlimited design prowess. “I had been in the joinery world since the age of 16, and after a few roles got to the point where I could do everything in the shops with my eyes closed, I was hungry for a very different level of work,” says the

self-confessed perfectionist. “Dave and I met on a cabinet-making course and it soon became apparent that we had shared ideas.” Since joining forces in 2010, the pair have proven unstoppable. The tiny fox that serves as their logo encapsulates the local, crafty and iconic nature of the items the produce, and a quick introduction to some of their key pieces makes it immediately evident why the little fox is galloping. Demand for Young & Norgate items is growing, fast, because what emerges from these workshops is, quite simply, breath-taking. “We’ve just kitted out hedge fund offices in London and injected new life into one of the oldest wine merchants in the country (think leatherclad counters and full wall bottle installations),” says Dave. “Our work is very varied and has a strong residential component too, from bespoke walk-in wardrobes and libraries to freestanding one-of-a-kind furniture pieces that will essentially be the heirlooms of tomorrow.” Even pieces this outfit calls ‘off the shelf ’ (among the ‘shelves’ is Liberty of London) are only ever one of a hundred. A quality-focused approach that has no doubt earned them their recent barrage of awards. “The prestigious Bespoke Guildmark we were awarded for the Zoetic chest of drawers by the Worshipful Company of Furniture Makers was especially satisfying,” says Ross. “It’s one of the hardest awards to win, and each one given out gets a number and a seal. We are only the 450th in the UK to achieve this.” Typically for them, design superiority is balanced by a keen grip of the practicality of the process. “Some clients have a clear idea of what they want, while others need our guidance from square one. We are happy to visit the space and conceptualise with them, and present them with 3D visuals of what they can expect the finished product to look like,” says Dave. “No one gets rushed; we’ll take them through each step if they fancy it.” “The environment in which we create is also of utmost importance,” adds Ross. “The space in which we make our furniture and installations needs to be as similar as possible to where they will end up living. Before we got started we made sure everything was double glazed, installed carefully selected lighting, painted accordingly, and we even keep the thermostat set just right so that the workspace lends itself to the interior of a house.” Perhaps their most practical consideration of all is cost – a walnut side table can set you back around £1,300 and a sideboard £2,500. “Our items are undeniably exclusive and high end,” admits Dave. “But part of being crafty is knowing how to work to a set
Home truths by Paula Nicholls Interior design expert I love Dolly Parton but I don’t want to stand in a field with thousands of other people to express my long-held adoration. Once apron a time long, long ago when vinyl was king I was a music aficionado, actually I was a music snob. From 14 years of age I listened to John Peel, his dulcet mono tones lulled me to sleep. Apart from a few ill-advised months as a ‘ New Romantic’ with my friend Rowena, during which we used brown eye shadow to sculpt razor sharp cheek bones where none belonged on our pubescent chubby chops, my thrall was so-called indie music. Doggone it! Four-pawed Ian is part of the team with David Young, left and below, and Ross Norgate budget. Even if you have limits, we can still surpass your expectations. “ I bid farewell to the team (including a stern-faced yet affectionate mixed breed dog, called Ian) and follow Dave’s sleek black Land Rover over uncertain territory and back to higher ground. As he waves goodbye from behind the wheel I can’t help think of the similarities between the pair and this iconic vehicle choice –flawless functionality and unapolo-
getic style spring to mind –and the way nature’s elements allow them to showcase the raw and elegant power of good design. For more details visit www.youngandnorgate.com

music periodicals. Mostly copies of the NME (New Musical Express). I’d bought 52 editions a year for five years. As an indie kid, it was my duty to raid my mum and dad’s wardrobe for their 1950s throw-offs. In the early days, straight leg trousers could not be found in our house, so the only solution was to take in flares, which were relics from the 1970s. This, though, had its issues as, if only done on one side, the seam would spiral around your lower leg adding an odd clownlike effect. Trendy Doctor Marten boots could not be found in Cornwall, either, so a stunningly simple substitute were desert boots dyed black.
The London-based fashionistas would have been quaking in their winkle picker shoes to see us, I’m sure. As I grew older, my wardrobe grew even more sophisticated. I wore my dad’s old overcoats and DM shoes and black Levi jeans or thick black tights with skirts made out of fifties fabrics. Eventually, I moved away from Cornwall and for many years the only people I knew were in the music biz. My boyfriends were in bands, I put on gigs, had my own fanzine and I even ran a large music and arts festival. I was cool, apparently. But I had a secret, something I dare not expose to my friends for fear of ridicule. Hidden in the depths of my wardrobe was my furtive stash of forbidden music, Dolly Parton, Babs Streisand, The Bee Gees, Simon and Garfunkel and worst of all a compilation: Boogie Nights Soul Sensations. Nowadays these aberrations are accepted but then when we were judged more harshly for our crimes against taste. At last, I can be out and proud. So when Glastonbury Festival announced that Dolly Parton would be appearing I thought, ‘Yes this is my chance’. I can sway to the country rhythms of ‘Apple Jack’ a lighter aloft, tears in my eyes. My joy didn’t last when I remembered that Glastonbury was a festival where camping was obligatory and I would be surrounded by people to whom I have not been formally introduced. I thought ‘Nah! Not for me’, I’m too old, too set in my ways. I think I’ll stay home and watch it on the telly. I might don a pair of muddy Wellies and a cagoule and get my someone to jostle me a bit while I’m holding a pint of weak lager that’s cost me £8. That’ll set the necessary mood. Sorry, Dolly, for not being there but I’ll be thinking of you. Paula Nicholls runs Betty Boyns, an interiors and soft furnishings company, in her home village of Newlyn, West Cornwall.
