We asked one another, why should we be a coupon book when we’re so obviously awesome? Why can’t we be a “magazine-magazine”? And why can’t we be both? The answer was obvious: If you don’t fit into either category, invent a new one. So that’s what we’re doing, combining advertising and editorial, taking the best parts of each and adding a few missing pieces. Over the next few months, you’ll see added content. Coming soon: A real estate section, which is a brand-new concept for direct mail that we think is pretty brilliant. AND we’re changing to a “perfect bind” or flat spine. Each month, we get better and better, and that’s due in large part to you. We are so excited about the level of participation from you in just a few months. Our first kids’ contest, a drawing contest, resulting in an avalanche of creative and beautiful entries. Our second contest, poetry, produced so many poems we could hold a poetry slam to rival any college coffee house. The winning entries are published in this issue (page 12) as well as pictures of the poets themselves. Since we couldn’t fit pictures of our drawing contest winners in the last issue, we will gladly reprint your work with your pictures next issue (just email us at design1@markettreasury.com). We’re starting fiction contests for readers, with the very first winning story to appear next month. We’re starting our ambitious Unknown Author Project (see page 5) in an effort to help new, talented novelists get their big break. This month has just a short excerpt to give you a taste, but next month we will begin the project in earnest. We want your photographs (see page 12). We want pictures of your pets, just because. In a nutshell, we want YOU. Creativity and art are very important and often go ignored, so we’re going to change that. The best part is we are still direct mail, so you get all this for free if you are in our distribution zones. Dear Reader, Most writers would agree that it is hard to get a first novel published. JK Rowling’s first book Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone was rejected by twelve—count them, twelve—publishing houses. It wasn’t always so difficult. In the pre-television, pre-Hollywood, preinternet era, literature was prized for entertainment and enlightenment. Authors did not need literary agents to find publishers. They had another way to promote their work and develop a following of readers: Serial publication. The words of Charles Dickins first appeared in print when The Pickwick Papers was published piece by piece in a literature periodical. Harpers, the Atlantic Monthly, The Saturday Evening Post and Scribner’s Monthly were the platforms upon which some of the greatest writers in history launched their careers. Among the American writers that wrote in serial form were Henry James, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Herman Melville, and Rudyard Kipling. As Scribner’s Monthly put it in 1878, “it is in a magazine that the best novelists always appear first.” And then the 20th century happened, and as time progressed, magazines have largely forsaken literature in favor of filling their pages with Kim Kardashian. I could make a joke here about how much space her rear occupies, but I’ll let you ruminate upon the subject. Having cavorted with artists and creative people throughout my career, I’ve met several talented people searching for literary agents, the first step to publishing in the modern era. One of those writers is Joshua Dillon, who has inspired me to begin The Unknown Author Project. Starting with our next issue, Josh’s very first novel will be published in a serial format in these pages. Each month, Market Treasury will bring the next installment of There Are More Things to you in print and online until the book finds a publisher. We’ll give you a little taste of Chapter 1 this month. In my opinion, it is time to get back to some of the traditions that gave us enduring works of literature, art and more. The Unknown Author Project will continue beyond Josh Dillon’s book. I invite you to participate in the project by becoming rabid fans of the authors we feature, utilizing the dazzling tools of the internet to help build a buzz. You can be a part of launching the careers of great authors. But that’s not all: you can be published, too. Each month, we will have a short story contest for readers sponsored by local businesses. cHAPTER 1: tHE LEVIATHAN arah has been an orphan for most of her life. Her father died after taking a small boat onto a river that heaved and dashed his body onto sharp rocks, scattering his various parts like Osiris. Her mother wept by the riverside, then turned her eyes to the healing promises of magic. She also died, a short time later, next to that same river, which would forever curl and twist serpent-like through Sarah’s imagination. Sarah believes that river contains a creature lurking within its depths. It is part monster, part deity; an ancient totem image tattooed upon her memory. The leviathan that swallowed Jonah, and later spit him upon the shores of Nineveh, can occasionally be seen stalking the waters of a sleepy town in northwestern Oregon called Solomon. “It’s not so important that you believe these events actually happened,” Sarah tells James, “so much as that you can see them happening.” James listens as she spins a strange tale of witches and thieves, and madmen obsessed with justice, weaving the mythology of her history with an almost effortless poise, the faint trace of a smile hinting at the playful detachment of a singer crooning an old and familiar tune. He watches her eyes gleam with inner sparks flickering upon the backdrop of her haunted imagination, as she tells him about a cottage, deep in a primordial forest, overrun by frogs, where undead secrets sleep beneath the shadows of weeping willows. And he is bewildered. It is a mystery to him that she could have emerged from such a mythic past to enter his own, much less unusual, life. But they fell in love regardless. They would often walk through the park, watching ducks float upon the surface of a sleepy lake, as colorful leaves would spin gently toward the ground. They worked day jobs and ran errands. And, together, they attempted to banish the past.
ne morning, Sarah is still asleep while James is calmly preparing eggs, oblivious to the presence of a strange, melancholy face watching him through the kitchen window. Had he looked, he would have observed a man’s face, partially concealed by the upturned collar of a rain-soaked trench coat, but he would not have known that the face belongs to Samuel Roberts. Samuel is an unhappy man, whose eyes would have seemed to James to have the vacant, hollow quality of a person lost in reminiscences. In fact, Samuel’s mind is currently spinning through a vortex of haunted visions: memories of a cottage deep in the woods, with dilapidated walls strangled by vines, blanketed in a pungent smell of swamp water and infested with a plague of frogs. Samuel shudders at the memory of that strange chorus of croaking. Samuel had never imagined that seeing Sarah again would resurrect so many painful memories. Many years ago he’d watched her mother die. He remembers the woman’s hands stretching toward the creature she had given her life to save. He wrings his own hands, remembering that sickening mixture of mud and blood. The air had been crisp, and bullfrogs croaked in the darkness.

Always these memories seem to be haunted by frogs. Their cold, black eyes watching him stumble toward that horrible cottage, into which he sometimes dreams he is trapped by an invisible power. In his nightmares, the doors always slam shut, preventing his escape. Often, the old lady herself is there, returned from the dead, her voice cackling with a strange guttural laughter. Itemizing Deductions Can Lead to

When it comes to reducing your tax burden, itemizing deductions may be the way to go. The standard deduction is certainly easier, and might be a better option if you have a simple tax situation or don’t own a home, but if you determine that itemizing is right for you, it could lead to substantial savings.
Itemizing vs. Standard Deduction The standard deduction is exactly what it sounds like—a flat amount that you can deduct from your taxable income. The amount you can deduct is based on your filing status, number of dependents, and what year you’re filing the taxes for. For additional information on the standard deduction, see IRS Publication 501.
When you itemize deductions, you have the ability to deduct the actual dollar amount of individual deductions. Some of these deductions come in the form of mortgage interest, property taxes, medical expenses, and more. If you think that if you totaled up all of your allowed deductions and it would be greater than the standard deduction, it would be wise to itemize.
What Expenses Can be Itemized? The most
common expenses include mortgage interest; charitable contributions; property taxes; state and local income taxes; medical expenses that exceed 7.5% of your adjusted gross income; various miscellaneous expenses that exceed 2% of your income such as union dues, tools and supplies needed for work, tax preparation fees, some legal fees, and many more.
Should You Itemize? There is no right or wrong answer, and it ultimately depends on your situation. To determine if itemizing would be worthwhile, you should take a look at Schedule A of Form 1040. On this sheet, you can list your itemized expenses, and then total them up to compare the amount to the standard deduction. If the itemized amount is greater, then you would want to itemize. If the total itemized amount is less than the standard deduction, you would not want to itemize. The largest deductions for most people come in the form of mortgage interest and property taxes, and in these situations, even a modest mortgage could put you over the standard deduction limit. Since this can total into the thousands of dollars over the standard deduction, the tax savings can be significant. 8

Five Suits, One Robe and a Bad Toupee A personal account of elder abuse

Often my work with senior citizens involves lighthearted, gentle assistance as they navigate through the operations of Silver Key Senior Services. Our interface involves explaining processes, giving directions, lending an arm, pushing a cart, and kindly listening to their stories. As I walk through my workday, I am often pulled away because my cell phone is demanding my attention to another senior’s plight – my older sister who is a victim of elder abuse in another state. While I possess the knowledge of dozens of resources available in the Pikes Peak region, I am challenged in my efforts to speak on my sister’s behalf over 1000 miles away.
were enjoying each other (although he is married). We did not understand the direction this friendship was headed. Within a couple of months, my sister began telling her friends and sisters that her relationship had deepened and that this new friend was her soul mate. Life takes curious turns of events and mine is no exception. While I have not always agreed with my older sister and her decisions and choices, I have always been willing to let her live her life and follow her own path. Today, the stress of her life choices has created a deep abyss of psychosomatic dementia. Her mind has literally shut down to protect her from her grief. Once she created beautiful needlepoint works of art that are treasured by friends and family. Today my 69 year old sister cannot pull the threads of her memory together to create a sentence.

For five months, my family has been fighting a very conniving perpetrator who has committed crimes of financial abuse that have led to my once millionaire sister now being homeless, without the ability to drive, medically unstable, depressed, and finally (and most importantly) unable mentally to work against this invasion! In less than a year, her new “friend” wormed his way into her emotions, her checkbook, control over her decisions (i.e. a new will), alienated her from her family and friends, took medical oversight, obtained Power of Attorney and Temporary Guardianship…all without the knowledge of her children, her sisters, and her friends.
My story is a common one in the world of agencies like Silver Key, Department of Human Services, Adult Protective Services and even AARP. But today, for me, this is personal.
Although it can be a family member abusing the senior by knowingly obtaining money or cars, it also can be at the hands of a caregiver. In my sister’s situation, she befriended a man her age through her son. At first, they
As stewards of our families and our community, it is vital that we raise awareness of this crime against our aging population. This is a crime that crosses all barriers – education, financial, religious and upstanding citizens. It is our responsibility to be tuned in and to report any instances of abuse, not just bruises and black eyes but bullying, control, and isolation. Elder abuse is an insidious crime. As I have talked with friends and co-workers, I have heard dozens of stories where a family member has been taken advantage of. The term “abuse” is not always used in conjunction with our seniors being mistreated financially or by a new friend surfacing to make mom or dad happy. We tend to understand child abuse and domestic abuse. Elder abuse is not as frequently identified.
We go to court in October to determine guardianship for a once vibrant, intelligent, compassionate, and devoted member of the family. The perpetrator has fought diligently to retain control as he stands to lose much more than money. There is a criminal investigation, a guardian ad litem, adult protective services, and an attorney hired by me in opposition of the petition for permanent guardianship. Five suits, one robe, and a bad toupee (perpetrator) will determine the future of my sister. My sister will have no voice…her fate now in the hands of lawyers and the courts.

Humans share 98.5% of their DNA with chimpanzees. We also share 70% of our DNA with slugs! Ants do not have lungs. Their exoskeletons have tiny valves called spiracles, which draw oxygen into an internal system of tiny valves called tracheae. Queen ants sleep an average of nine hours every day in relatively long stretches. In contrast, worker ants sleep half that much by taking about 250 power naps a day, each about one minute in length. A queen ant can live for years, but her poor minions typically last a few months. Cats have 32 muscles in each ear. Ostriches can outrun horses. Males can roar like lions. Bats cannot walk on their legs. They crawl using the claws on their wings. 22
Jellyfish are 98% water and will evaporate in the sun. Giraffes and humans have the same number of bones in their necks. The Indian giant squirrel is usually about three feet long. Q: Why are oil change recommendations always changing? A: Some folks are steadfast in changing their oil every 3,000 miles. Then there are folks who fervently believe that a 10,000 mile interval between changes is just fine. Recommended Oil Change Intervals for new vehicles have grown from the old standby of 3,000 miles to 10,000 miles, in some cases, and even more in a few instances. Motor oil performance has improved dramatically, as has engine engineering, improved materials, control systems and more. I whole-heartedly support extended oil change intervals for newer vehicles, but only if you follow the recommendations below. Let’s conserve all the oil that we can! It’s not just personal; it’s in our national interest. Q: How do I know what is best for my car? A: The first consideration should be oil quality. Manufacturers are very specific regarding their oil specifications, particularly for vehicles with extended oil change schedules. This is very important! As we all know, oil prices have been rising like the national debt. The price goes up even further when the specified oil is a premium product with a premium price, and that’s assuming you can find the right oil to begin with. Q: Wow, my car uses expensive oil! Can I use a less expensive brand? A: Not using the proper oil invites problems, possibly BIG problems, down the road! If there’s a warranty issue with the engine, the oil will be sampled. And if you get caught with another kind of oil than the manufacturer states, guess what! You just bought yourself an engine! Q: How can I avoid problems with my oil to begin with? A: When’s the last time you checked your oil level? It’s not uncommon for us to see vehicles in the shop with no oil showing on the dip stick. Yep, these are usually the engines with that loud, metallic knocking sound under the hood, the ones retired to the salvage yard long before their time. Q: With gas prices on the rise again, what’s a person to do? A: I find that I can impact my gas mileage a mpg or so by carefully watching my driving habits. Maintaining proper
tire pressure and alignment will provide a bit more of a boost in mileage and can really extend your tire life. If you’re in the market for new tires, you’ll want to compare the difference in the rolling resistance of the various models.

Admit it: sometimes it’s easy to ignore those dashboard warning lights in hopes that they go away. Unfortunately, your car is not going to be fixed by a magical auto repair fairy, no matter how hard you clap your hands. So what are some signs you should never ignore? Luckily, we have the scoop.
Check Engine Light/Service Engine Soon –
This is possibly the #1 most overlooked warning sign your car gives you. Because this light could mean hundreds of things, it is easy to say that one of them is not a serious issue. However, ignoring the check engine light could be a costly mistake. Yes, most of the time it indicates a simple problem, but you should have a professional make sure your car is still road-worthy.
Oil Pressure Light – If you see this light turn on,
you are probably running low on oil, which is crucial for your car’s engine. Ignoring this light though could lead to severe engine trouble.
Brake Warning – It could just mean your hand-
brake is engaged or it could be that your brake pads are wearing out and need replacing. DO NOT ignore

issues with your brakes. If this light comes on, see your mechanic as soon as possible.
Battery System Warning Light – The charging system involves more than just the battery alone. This light can also indicate broken wires or problems with your alternator. Broken alternator = Engine no go. Engine Temperature – If this light comes on, you are having problems with cooling. If it flashes, find a safe place to pull off the road and get mechanical assistance. Your cooling fan may not be working, which can cause serious engine trouble.
ABS Light – The ABS system is usually integrated
with traction control and stability systems. These are in place to keep you safe during panic stops, wheel slippage, and handling. Drive at your own risk when this light comes on; it is something you will want to have checked out. Other things like vibration, steering difficulty, and noises will only get worse with time, and it is up to you whether you would rather pay a small fee to get it fixed now, or thousands of dollars later when something falls out of your car.
