There Are More Things a nOVEL BY jOSHUA dILLON CHAPTER 1: THE LEVIATHAN Continued from Issue 2 SERIAL FICTION
III. Unaware that he is being observed, James continues cracking eggs on the edge of the skillet. He hits the edge too hard this time and tosses the rapidly falling pieces into his skillet. He is picking out flecks of shell when he hears Sarah’s laughter announces her arrival. James is momentarily struck by how beautiful she looks, her long, dark hair falling in bouncing curls. Though her eyes might bulge a little, and her nose is perhaps somewhat large, to James, she is the image of perfection. James never was much of a romantic. He is even less so now; and yet, his love for Sarah has become the one remaining mystery of his life. The stars might be simple balls of energy, and rainbows only patterns of light interference, and the earth just a random accident in a vast and meaningless universe, but his love for Sarah somehow transcends explanation and his need for understanding. Long before having become the skeptical and somewhat prosaic character that he is today, however, James had been different. In fact, he used to dream of being a philosopher. More precisely, he enjoyed imagining himself as a pagan philosopher, living in ancient times, strolling through sunny Mediterranean fields in a toga and postulating theories of the good life at length, probing into the nature of Truth and creating elaborate mythologies to explain the subtleties of his findings. In college, however, he had encountered an entirely different approach to the study of philosophy, one that had left him bewildered and cold. This academic, bloodless philosophy filled his mind with a clutter of interesting ideas, but in no way did it provide him that which he desired most: a unified belief system that would simultaneously provide meaning, purpose and devotion in his life. Instead, he found himself following one twisted path after another, like a lost whaling vessel chasing some phantom prize through endless watery mazes. James became increasingly baffled by how hopelessly detached anything he studied seemed from the actual content of his life. He grew ever more skeptical about the capacity for human thought to create meaning. He began to spend more time finding ways to avoid his studies. While his books collected dust, he gathered bar receipts. Gradually, the depths of his curiosity became shallower, until no great thing could possibly lurk within; and the horizons of his imagination got smaller, until there seemed nowhere left for his thoughts to sail. And so he gave up on philosophy. He switched his field of study to business. With the exception of one or two works by Kierkegaard, he tossed all his books into a box and gave them to a local bookstore in exchange for a couple of guides to effective time management strategies, and then, in total disregard of both authors’ recommendations, he began to spend most of his free time drinking or flirting with women, and often both. Until he met Sarah, and fell in love with her.
ebullient. But...there was also a mystery behind her. He thought he could detect a faint, hidden force that seemed to shadow every one of her movements, as if she were held captive to some strange, lurking destiny. His first glimpse into this mystery occurred the first time Sarah told him about the leviathan that swan through the waters of her childhood. She had always called the phantom of her youth a leviathan; however, she had always admitted that, really, there was no way of knowing for sure what it was that had lived in the river outside of town. Some townsfolk claimed it was nothing more interesting than a large and abnormally shaped fish; others theorized that it was a wayward whale that had somehow wandered in from the Pacific. Still, there were some who believed it was the mysterious agent of a woman who they called the Witch of Solomon: an ancient and shriveled woman who had once lived alone in a cabin, deep inside the woods. Amongst the last group, the matter of whether this alleged witch had found the creature as a youth and subsequently trained it to do her bidding, or whether she had used some ancient incantation to raise it from the depths of whatever abyss it had come from, was subjected to endless speculation. Nonetheless, this old woman was herself killed by her own creature, chewed upon by its furious jaws—a Promethean testament to the consequences of tampering with the hidden powers of the universe. His mind snaps back to his own story – the sound of eggs sizzling an incantation of its very own.
V. Outside the window, Samuel is thinking about Sarah’s mother, Susan. He remembers those wild eyes, and that pale face contorted with grief. Susan died trying to save the leviathan when the creature rose in battle against their spears, its mighty torso dripping with river water, its silvery skin reflecting a pale moonlight. When Samuel had first witnessed the leviathan, he knew that he was not looking upon any member of the accepted animal kingdom. Instead, it was as if he were peeking through a curtain, into a hidden and obscure sitting room of Olympus. Knowing its existence made him special, chosen. And when the leviathan died, he felt a bitter anguish. The magnificent creature had been splayed out on the shore. Its tongue had flopped out of its mouth, landing on the jagged edge of a large rock. Its smooth surface was serrated and streaked by a thin stream of blood trickling toward the river. Samuel remembers being horrified by his companions standing in a semicircle around their victim, cheering and praising themselves for their victory.
VI.
IV. James smiles, remembering. From the start, there was something hauntingly intriguing about Sarah, even before she had started to tell him her stories. She was smart, charismatic,
“What’s so funny?” James asks as Sarah approaches.. “You mean besides watching you cook?” she teases. CONTINUED ON PG. 26

My Dinner with Amy BY ELIZABETH BEHNKE
When I found out I was going to be attending “Dinner with the Chef” at Garden of the Gods Gourmet, I did not know what to expect. I had imagined that there would be large flames of fire, delicate cuisine, and fancy utensils to use. However, it was not quite was I expected. When I entered the restaurant, the word “classy” instantly scrolled across my mind. There was a cute eating area inside which included a wine bar, but you could tell the main attraction was the Market Place, where you can buy every dish that they make, from fresh breads to entrées and even desserts. When dinner was announced, we were seated at tables inside the kitchen. When they say “Dinner with the Chef,” they really mean it; you dine with award-winning chef Amy Pontius! From your table, where you are seated with fellow foodies, you get a front row seat to all the action. Everything was beautiful, the food was cooked fresh, and the flavor was to die for. I have never had a more delicious five course meal in my life! From the appetizer to the dessert, it was all exquisite. There really are few experiences like this one that people get to enjoy. I would highly recommend that you have “Dinner with the Chef,” and see for yourself how truly divine it is.

What a Neat Boutique! RETAIL & ENTERTAINMENT
BY ELIZABETH BEHNKE
Visiting Retrospect was definitely a cool experience! When my friend told me about Retrospect and begged me to go with her, I had figured there would be some retro looking items, maybe even some cool costume clothing. When we arrived, I was totally blown away! There were so many cool things to look at and I was surprised by the variety of retro items they actually had. The many different kinds of displays featuring famous people like John Wayne, Elvis, and the Beatles were so nifty to look at and go through. All over the rest of the store, there were comic books, posters, shoes, handbags, lunch boxes, books, even candy and soda! They had so much to offer, there was literally something for everyone. I absolutely loved sifting through all the nostalgic toys and games. I felt like a kid again. I even found the retro clothes that I hoped they would have! It was like stepping back into a more glamorous time. Even though Retrospect is located in Monument, the drive up there was worth it, even if just to take a peek at all of the cool things that they have to offer! There certainly is not any kind of store like that located in Colorado Springs. Retrospect was truly a treat. I cannot wait to go back with my friends and family to show them all the cool things to see.

Someone to Watch Over Me Being there when no one else is
Most senior citizens remember Cole Porter and his famous love song “Someone To Watch Over Me”. Each week day as I drive to my job at Silver Key Senior Services, I listen to music. Often for me, the songs are from my own past. As a baby boomer, Cole Porter is actually more reminiscent of my parents and grandparents era. Ironically, today these words capture a hope that is not age specific. All of us, young and old, connect to music – from old family memories, church, choirs, school dances, radio and television. Remember Ed Sullivan? Today we have GLEE. Whatever our memories encompass, music marks the timeline of our personal stories.
functionality, medical needs, and neuropsychological examinations. As court-appointed guardians, Silver Key makes application for Medicaid, SSI, and Old Age Pension funding to ensure quality of life for each ward. The staff at Silver Key work like a family would for our wards. Our care managers watch diligently over the care, health and welfare of our clients. Our CFO and accountant make the appropriate financial decisions on their behalf.
All of us, young and old, connect to music – from old family memories, church, choirs, school dances, radio and television. Whatever our memories encompass, music marks the timeline of our personal stories.
Cole Porter did not write “Someone to Watch Over Me” as the theme song for seniors. Today, listening to his words, I think of seniors who need that special someone to watch over them. Silver Key has a department of unsung heroes that carefully assess and care for seniors 60+ who are challenged to remain independent, proud, and sometimes afraid of what their future might hold. Often incapacitated by dementia or other cognitive limitations, these seniors need (and deserve) someone to watch over them. The legal system addresses care managers as “guardians” and the seniors as “wards”. At Silver Key, we watch over 41 seniors who need assistance with daily living tasks from balancing their checking account to defending their rights in court.
Charging less than private guardians and conservators, Silver Key has only 10% of their wards with the ability to pay for the services provided. There is no expectation of payment or reward for Silver Key – only the compassion toward those who can no longer live safely in their own homes. Silver Key steps in when family is distant or nonexistent. We are the agency where the primary mission is to serve seniors and allow them to age gracefully. Silver Key works with the community to determine the spectrum of resources available to seniors in Colorado Springs. When Silver Key reaches out to the community for resources of time, nutrition, and money, our wards are the benefactors. Because of you, we are here for them. If you would like more information, please call 719-884-2300.
SENIORS AND RETIREMENT
The seniors that become wards of Silver Key have no one in the community to work solely on their behalf. Often they are in danger, estranged from family, without friends, and unable to live independently in a safe environment. Referrals come to Silver Key from the Department of Human Services, nursing homes, Adult Protective Services, and families. We work with the seniors to determine their
The assessment of a senior involves numerous factors to include: gender, financial resources (if any), best available options, all individual, and case by case. The assessment encompasses whether a senior is at risk in their own home. If that proves to be the case, Silver Key reaches out to their hundreds of community partners to find suitable housing and stability for seniors.
For the first time in history, the number of people on the planet age 60 and older will surpass those under 5.

My experience with Bennett Eye Care HEALTH AND BEAUT Y
BY IRIS GREENE
Despite our tendency to idealize the proportionality of the human body, most of us eventually discover that reality is anything but proportional. Perhaps you have heard of people with different sized feet? But did you also know that it is possible to have eyes with vastly different visions? I went twenty years without ever having the slightest inkling that my eyeballs might be mismatched. After all, how often does a person walk around looking out of only one eye at a time? This mismatch went unnoticed for many years—until I began to get frequent headaches. I tried everything I could to discover the cause of these headaches. My doctor insisted it was from dust, and so I obsessively dusted everything in the house. My friends insisted it was stress. So I bought all sorts of teas and bath oils. But the headaches only continued, until a friend of mine with glasses suggested that I have my vision checked at Bennett Eye Care. “Have my eyes checked!” I scoffed, “I have perfect vision!” The professionals at Bennett Eye Care patiently explained to me how my condition is one that is more common than most people realize. They found just the right prescription to free me from all headaches caused by eyestrain. In addition, they changing the way I’ve always thought about glasses, by offering their emPower!™ digital bifocals. emPower!™ glasses give you complete control of your bifocal. You can focus as fast as you blink, with correct vision for all ranges of sight. I am definitely pleased with the experience. Thanks, Bennett!

Ask Dr. Andrew Hall HEALTH AND BEAUT Y
Q: If my tooth doesn’t hurt and my filling is still in place, why would the filling need to be replaced? A: Constant pressure from chewing, grinding, or clenching can cause dental fillings, or restorations, to wear away, chip or crack. Although you may not be able to tell that your filling is wearing down, these restorations should be evaluated at your regular dental check-ups to make sure they are not wearing away. Q: I participate in a lot of high impact sports, should I be wearing a protective mouth guard? And if so, what is the best kind of mouth guard? A: Anyone who plays a sport where there is a risk of collision with another person or a hard surface should wear a mouth guard. As recommended by the ADA and the Academy for Sports Dentistry, a pressure-laminated, custom fitted mouth guard offers the best protection in contact sports. Q: I have heard a lot about dental sealants for kids teeth what are they exactly and what do they do? A: A dental sealant is a plastic material that is usually applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth. This plastic resin bonds into the depressions and grooves (pits and fissures) of the chewing surfaces of the teeth. The sealant acts as a barrier, protecting enamel from plaque and acids. Sealants protect these vulnerable areas by “sealing out” plaque and food.

Sarah nudges him aside, grabbing the large wooden spatula from his hands. She uses it to scoop out a clump of yoke dotted with tiny bits of eggshell. Thrusting the spoon at him, she feigns disappointment, saying, “You mean I don’t get any of this?” “Those are all my eggshells,” he laughs, “but where have you been all morning?”
tumble towards sleep and he becomes his most intuitive. “Staring. Yes, that is exactly what she’s always doing,” Sarah says, “Now really, either you’re going to shut up and listen to this story, or else I’m going to pour a mountain of pepper into your precious little eggs.” She grabs a can of black pepper off the spice rack and waves it menacingly in the air, gleefully demanding, “Which will it be? The story, or the pepper?”
James groans and, snatching the spatula from her, solemnly returns his vigilant attention to his yellowing eggs.
Sarah glares at him, narrowing her eyes into little slits. Looking at her, James is momentarily struck by the vision of her ears sticking out of the sides of her long black hair in a way that always reminds him of elfin ears. He thinks for a moment about how these same ears might have seemed out of place on another face, but on her they seem to perfectly match her nose.
“I know you don’t like Elizabeth,” he hears her saying, “But I can’t understand it. She has always been so kind to you.”
Sarah begins tapping her foot, which breaks the spell her beauty has placed him under.
“I’m sorry,” James replies. “She just really bothers me. Especially her eyes. Have you noticed how they are--all the time-staring? She just stares, without any regard to civility. And that mystic nonsense she is always blathering about…”
“Neither!” he says, quickly swiping the pepper from her hand. Smiling and feeling pleased with his agility, he carefully replaces it on top of the microwave.
She twirls the utensil absently in the air. “Talking with Elizabeth.”
James has never felt comfortable with Sarah’s attachment to this young woman. Even though Elizabeth has always been friendly to him, smiling and laughing at his jokes, his nerves go inexplicably on edge whenever Sarah mentions having seen her. His personal theory is that he resents Elizabeth for encouraging Sarah’s more mystic tendencies. And yet, even while he complains about Sarah’s flirtations with mysticism, James also finds this side of her character compelling. This apparent paradox sometimes occurs to James late at night, when his thoughts
“Anyway, Beth introduced me to this man named William, who is developing some philosophy of a balance between the material and the spirit in the human body, and how they can chart the way problems develop and proscribe certain cures...” James notices Sarah’s entire face light up with the excitement of a new idea, and he momentarily feels envious of her seemingly indomitable curiosity.

The Best Kept Automotive Secret BY DAVE FLEMING
“Locally owned and operated” can have several different meanings these days, especially if there is a sudden problem and the owners are hard to find. Baxter’s Automotive, just north of Garden of the Gods and I-25, embodies the true idea of locally owned and operated. Springs native Ed Baxter is the kind of technician you want on your side when car problems strike. He has been servicing and diagnosing higher-end cars for 23 years. From BMW and Audi, to Mini and Volkswagen, Ed has made sure that every automobile has been brought back to perfection for nearly a quarter century. “I want every customer to have the same experience at Baxter’s, no hassle, no gimmicks or games,” says Ed. “Just an honest diagnostic and repair at a fair price.” The attention to detail has not only been in the work performed, but it has also transcended into his location. There is simply a clean, homelike atmosphere matched with a smile from Patricia, Ed’s wife, who is also a Colorado Springs native. The shop is just as clean as the waiting area. If you have a Mini and want to save a drive to the dealer in Denver or even if you have a higher end import that needs special care, call Baxter’s. Baxter’s is the secret that everyone is talking about in Colorado Springs. 26

Remodeling your home can be either a smooth transaction or a complete disaster. We talked with Barbara Martinez, owner of Construction Pro’s, about what it takes to make sure her business is the best of the best. Q: What does business as usual mean for you? A: Being responsible for the going on in my company and following through honestly. I make sure that each client is taken care of properly and all questions are answered before any work is done. Q: What do you think are the biggest challenges or fears that face small businesses today? A: Lack of work and having to compete with non-licensed people who are not professionals. Everyone employed by Construction Pros are highly experienced professionals that know what they are doing and do not make beginner mistakes like other companies, which saves the homeowner money in the long run. Q: How has the recession and sluggish recovery affected your company? A: It has affected us somewhat. There is less work, but our loyal customers calling us back and our good name have kept us going. Get Inspired by Spring BY ELIZABETH BEHNKE
Spring has arrived! It is time to get rid of the old and bring in the new, but you don’t have to break the bank to do so. There are a million and one ways that you can freshen up your home for spring, so why choose the expensive route? We have compiled a list of decorating ideas for you to gander at and maybe even try. There is no reason why your home can’t look beautiful on a budget.
Decorating Idea # 1 Furniture is the main object inside a home. It is also highly overlooked when re-decorating. Have you changed things around so much that your furniture no longer matches or is just simply outdated? By adding a neutral-toned slipcover with bright colored pillows to your couch or chair, you can have a brand new look that will make you feel like you bought a brand new set! For your wooden or metal furniture, a can of paint is all you need to bring the look up to date. Extra tip: Match your curtains to the color of your pillows to pull the look together.

Decorating Idea # 2 One of the easiest ways to give your place a fresh, inspiring new look is with a new coat of paint. You might be surprised what bright, cheery colors can do to brighten up your living area. Think of your walls as a blank canvas. Empty, plain, uninCONTINUED ON PG. 41 GET HUNDREDS OF COUPONS FOR YOU, YOUR FRIENDS AND YOUR FAMILY AT WWW.MARKETTREASURY.COM

viting. It is up to you, the designer, to create a masterpiece. Some trendy color ideas to paint your walls for spring include bright, sunny yellows, lovely lavender, “Sex and the City” pink, sailor blue, and tart tangerine. Extra tip: Paint colored squares on your wall to give more depth to your wall art.
Wall Art Idea #1 A new trendy coat of paint does wonders, but sometimes, it is just not enough. What else can you do? Wall art! Now, before you turn off this idea completely, because we all know how expensive it can be, there are plenty of simple ways to make your own. Canvas is a decorator’s dream and a great way to show off your creative capabilities. One example would be to place tape (preferably painters’ tape) in a pattern of your choice over the canvas. Then take the color of paint that you prefer and paint over the tape. Let it dry, then remove the tape for a unique and creative design. Repeat if desired.
Wall Art Idea #2 Another idea to add color and texture to your walls is to take your favorite style of fabric and spread it over a canvas, securing it to the canvas frame with staples.
Wall Art Idea #3 Some of your brain cells die each time you sneeze (don’t worry; they grow back).
One last hot item to consider is wall decals. These have recently taken off and are gaining a lot of popularity. They come in all shapes, sizes, designs, and colors. Just peel and stick! Don’t worry; these stickers will not ruin your walls or paint!

Spring Tips for Green Thumbs BY ELIZABETH BEHNKE
A vegetable garden brings so many things to the table—literally! What is better than having a beautiful vegetable garden and being able to actually taste your own success? Now, I know it might not be as easy in the beginning as one would hope, but don’t worry; with a little persistence, you will get there. Just remember to not get too carried away, and keep your garden proportional to what you can handle. First of all, if you are determined to start growing your own vegetables, start out with something easy. Carrots, lettuce, squash, tomatoes, cucumbers and even beans are all really great choices for beginner gardeners. April is the perfect month to start planting carrots, lettuce, or even cabbage here in Colorado. However, hold off to plant things like tomatoes, cucumbers, and squash until May.
The inside of a cucumber is 20° colder than the outside air.
So now that you know what you want to plant, where are you going to plant it? Vegetable gardens can take up a lot of room, so before you begin, make sure you CONTINUED ON PG. 47

have the space. If you do not have a big enough area in your backyard, try growing your vegetables in a planter box instead. You can even articulately place them around your home as decoration; just make sure they are getting plenty of sunshine and are out of the wind’s harmful reach!. Using planter boxes for gardening is especially helpful in Colorado. You don’t have to worry about whether or not your plants will make it. With a planter, you can control everything, starting with the soil. Okay, so you know what and where you want to plant, but how are you going to plant it? Experienced gardeners put a lot of thought into designing how their garden will look as it grows.
GARDENS AND LANDSCAPING
Some consider it an art. Others think of it as how gardening should be done. If you think about it, putting some time and extra effort into planning where your veggies will be growing and what it will look like when it is harvest time is not such a bad idea. You can design your garden to be hassle-free so that every vegetable is easy to get to when they need special attention. Or if you are feeling bold, you can go that extra mile and try to coordinate colors and textures to make your garden that much more appealing. Wise Words from Sealwize
Drawing out a plan of what will go where in your garden also gives you an idea of how much space you will need in order to grow your vegetables. Don’t be afraid to get creative. You are putting blood, sweat, and tears into your garden, why not have a say with how you want it to look?
If you have a deck, then you know how much a pain it is to go through the process of re-staining it every year. Scott Moore, the owner of the Sealwize territory in El Paso County, felt the same way about his deck.
If you feel like your vegetable garden is missing something, try adding a few flowers. Mixing flowers in with your vegetables is not only fun and colorful, but also beneficial to the growth of your veggies. By planting some flowers in with your vegetable garden you can attract pollinators, along with the right kind of insects to help your garden grow. Flowers like cosmos and zinnias with the colors of white, yellow, and blue seem to achieve this the best.
Scott’s primary market consists of homeowners just like him who want to reduce the amount of exterior work-related headaches that they have to do on their home. As a family man, Scott can attest that there are certainly better things to do than exhaustive maintenance on your deck or driveway every year or two. Testimonials and referrals from satisfied customers drive his business almost as much as the quality of Sealwize products.
GARDENS AND LANDSCAPING
I think everyone knows Colorado is not the easiest state to grow a garden. However, by researching what can grow in this harsh climate, along with a bit of patience and maybe a little luck, you could very well be on your way to having a beautiful, vibrant garden. Cheers to you!
Scott set out to find a better way. After doing some research, he came across Sealwize. He was very excited to finally find a completely “green” non-VOC product with a long-term warranty—so excited, in fact, that he decided to purchase the El Paso and Teller County territories.
That product has proven to be so superior to the competition that Scott has purchased a number of other territories around the country. Ask any of Scott’s satisfied customers, and they will tell you Sealwize is a must-have for anyone with a deck or driveway. As Scott himself says,“Use Sealwize for your deck, patio, fence, sidewalk and driveway, and get on with your life!”
