Vitreous tamponades are essentials used in vitrectomy procedures conducted in the human eye that either assist in healing/reattachment of the retina or provide a replacement to a clouded vitreous humor. This report studies the current as well as future prospects of the global vitreous tamponades market. Vitreous humor of the human eye is a vital component that acts as nutrition and refractive medium. The vitreous humor is initially a highly viscous gel like substance made up of collagen fibers and water. In case of trauma or upon aging, the vitreous humor disintegrates and in the process ends up tearing or detachment of highly fragile retina. Thus, these retinal detachment and vitreoretinal disorders often require an ophthalmic surgical procedure known as vitrectomy. Vitrectomy procedure involves surgical removal of the vitreous humor that is replaced with synthetic substitute known as vitreous tamponade. These vitreous tamponades act as a retinal reattachment medium thereby aiding the healing process. The global vitreous tamponade market is studied based on the types of tamponades and geography. Based on tamponade types, the market have been further segmented into two major sub segments namely, gaseous tamponades and liquid tamponades. Between product segments, liquid tamponade segment accounted for the largest share (in terms of revenue) of the market, in 2013. Liquid tamponades have widespread usage across Asia Pacific, Europe and RoW due to their effectiveness in treating high degree of retinal tear. Gaseous tamponades on the other hand are expected to grow at a faster rate compared to liquid tamponades, owing to its lower costs and ease of use. The liquid tamponades segment has been further categorized into silicone oil and perfluorocarbons. Of these, silicone oil segment captured majority of the market share in 2013. The perfluorocarbons have limited use and are used as an intra operative tool during the treatment of giant retinal breaks.
