Aimpoint Red Dot Sight: How It Works ? A red dot sight is a type of reflex sight for firearms that helps the user to get his aimpoint in illuminated red dot. Light emitting diode (LED) is used to generate the red dot at the focus of collimating optics. The dot remains aligned with the weapon and easy for target shooting and military applications. The size of the dot is controlled by the aperture hole at its front side.

The diagram below shows that the collimating mirror creates a virtual red dot image at infinity. The mirror used is partially silvered and designed to just reflect the red spectrum which has a wavelength of 670 nanometre. The new generation produces red dot sight with low power consumption LEDs and other power saving electronics which allows them to run for hours.
