CHANGING DEMOGRAPHICS
86,600+ students, 123 schools & growing! AISD continues to grow at a rate two-to-three times faster than the state’s student population, which itself is growing at a faster rate than the nation’s student population. Over the past five years, the number of students in AISD has increased by 6 percent and we now serve more than 86,600 students at 123 campuses. On average, the district continues to grow by about 1,000 students per year. While neighboring districts are also serving more students each year, much of the new growth in AISD is among economically disadvantaged students, which comprise 63.8 percent of our student population. The demographic makeup of the district’s student population has shifted and now more than ever, many of our students have educational needs that must be met with additional resources. However, we must address the increasing needs of our students in an environment of tightly constrained resources on the local and state levels. Austin is also one of the most dynamic and competitive marketplaces for talent in Central Texas. While we are building capacity to address student growth, we also must compete with neighboring districts and other urban school districts for the best teachers and principals. Despite these challenges, AISD remains focused on the goals and strategies that will best prepare all students—current and future—for college, career, and life in a globally competitive environment.
