PROPOSALS
3
Landscape The proposed landscape at Stamford Bridge site SMB-A is a considered combination of approaches which are aimed at integrating the development with local character, landscape and ecology with a minimum of impact. Proposals aim to enhance local landscape character, habitat, biodiversity and also improve upon the villages’ limited options for public open recreation spaces. Landscape mitigation is led by a landscape and visual assessment and aims to minimise impact to local landscape character, residents and recreational users by use of green buffer areas and careful planting with native shrubs and trees. The proposals aim to integrate the development with local landscape character by retaining much of the existing framework of trees and hedgerows. Furthermore, an orchard and derelict hedgerows will be restored and enhanced by additional native tree and hedgerow planting appropriate to the area and scale of the setting. Additional native tree and hedge planting within the development and along boundaries allows habitat and ‘green corridors’ to be created which strengthens local green infrastructure by connecting existing habitat areas such as the woodland strips along the east and western boundaries. The development will aim to improve local public recreational facilities with enhancements to pedestrian and cycle links to Stamford Bridge centre and introduction of public open space such as the orchard (6), Childrens’ public open space play area (1), green (3), extension of a green frontage from the village (5), introduction of green buffer margins and SUDS facilities that provide a sustainable drainage facility as well as green cycle and pedestrian routes.

1. Public open space & play area The public open space and LEAP childrens’ play area will incorporated within a landscape setting and will provide both an attractive setting to the sites’ main entrance and an important public recreational space close to the existing Stamford Bridge community who’s current choice of public spaces are predominantly sports fields (a cricket field, three tennis courts and four football pitches) with the exception of the small play area near the old station.

AA
The existing area has large scale mature trees that will help to screen the site from the road and provide an attractive backdrop for the recreation area. The area will provide opportunity for relaxation and a play area for children. A retention pond also could provide an attractive and functional addition to the SUDS infrastructure proposed for the site.

2. Green buffer margin The Green buffer margin will help to create a margin and visual screen between the existing and proposed developments. Proposed native hedgerows and trees will help to filter views of the new development and improve the attractiveness of the footpath which runs the length of the western boundary. Informal native ‘Field margin’ style wildflower planting would help to improve biodiversity along this route and help create a semi - rural character.

3. The Green The Green is a smaller public open space at the end of the central green corridor pedestrian and cycle route. It provides a destination point at the end of this route and allows open views to the wider countryside beyond.
3
The green will also form part of the southern boundary treatment of native trees and shrubs that will filter views from open countryside to the south and help integrate the development within the local landscape.

South facing, this site will be a sunny spot to relax, walk the dog, have a picnic and enjoy the view.

4. Central green corridor The central green corridor will form a variety of functions: AA
• Retention of a central north - south open view through the site • Creation of a central green access route for pedestrians and cyclists • It will function as part of the Sustainable drainage (SUDS) framework within the site
A
4
• It will act as an attractive secondary entrance/ exit route through the centre of the site • It will help to create a green buffer to distance development away from the front of the existing houses within the centre of the site • It will serve as part of a green recreational walking and cycling network throughout the site that connects the development with the adjoining areas of Stamford Bridge and local green spaces

5. Green frontage The Green frontage performs a variety of functions: • It creates a landscape edge to the development between proposed properties and the main road (A166) A
• Provides a green strip to plant native trees and hedgerows to filter views from the north • Extends the the character of the green strip from the western edge of the village
5
• The green frontage strip acts as a collection area for a sustainable drainage (SUDS) swale • This green frontage will help to provide an attractive approach to Stamford Bridge
AA
• Creation of a green corridor of native trees and hedgerow that connects the two strips of woodland at the eastern and western boundaries of the site

The orchard has been identified as an area of ‘Traditional Orchard’ which is listed as a ‘priority habitat’ in the UK Biodiversity Action Plan. It represents part of the historic landscape associated with the Burtonfields Hall area. As well as providing an attractive alternative public amenity space, it will provide a community food resource, and act as a green buffer at the interface of Burtonfields Hall and the proposed development. In addition, a native hedge will be planted along the boundary to provide visual separation of Burtonfields Hall from the site.
