Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder Summary What is ADHD? Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a medical diagnosis given to children who have developmental, behavioural and cognitive difficulties compared to their peers. It has three components: • sustaining attention and concentration • controlling impulses • controlling motor activity A diagnosis can only correctly be made when there are problems in these areas over and above those found in the peer group and in more than one setting. Average figures indicate that one child in every class will have ADHD characteristics. The implications are that 90% of pupils with ADHD will underachieve in school. The condition is more common in boys. An ADHD child will: • feel confused about what they are expected to do • likely suffer from being repeatedly told off for their inattentive, impulsive and disruptive behaviour • suffer from low self-esteem • become disaffected • suffer from lack of temper control ADHD is sometimes associated with other conditions: • Tourette’s syndrome • Autistic Spectrum Disorders • Specific Learning Difficulties • Speech and Language Difficulties • Dyspraxia • Dyslexia Strategies for the Classroom • Ensure the pupil is looking at you when you give instructions • Break work down into small amounts • Provide prompts to help keep the pupil on task • Give an appropriate amount of time for each task • Ask pupils to repeat instructions back • Allow pupils to doodle or fiddle with something when listening as it may help them to listen • Use good role models to work with the pupil • Ensure the pupil is sitting away from distractions – look at seating plan • Set clear, achievable behaviour expectations • Be consistent when the pupil is misbehaving • Alternate short tasks with longer tasks • Consider non-written forms of assessment • Provide appropriate differentiated tasks • Can the pupil see the board clearly • It does help if you know the pupil well • Set realistic homework and check that the correct details have been entered into their homework diary • Clearly state the consequences of actions
