Judges for the 15th Annual Business Excellence Awards Kim Smythe is President and Chief Executive Officer of the Greater Nanaimo Chamber of Commerce, a position he took over in late 2013. His background in marketing, communications, government relations and event planning and management matched the needs of this nearly 800-member strong business organization as they began their 125th year of service to the community. Kim believes strongly in the entrepreneurial spirit and in embracing today’s growing economy in the knowledge, technology and creative sectors breaking through in the mid-Island these days as the community turns the page on its heavily resource-dependent history. The Nanaimo Chamber believes that collaboration and imagination are key factors in maximizing economic growth and prosperity in these changing times.

15th Annual Business Excellence Awards
Welcome to the 15th Annual Vancouver Island Business Excellence Awards
January 22, 2015 at the Westin Bear Mountain Resort in Victoria We’re celebrating the best of last year, as we head into an exciting New Year! What better way to kick off the next year is there than to have the best of business on Vancouver Island in a number of categories get together for an evening of celebration, camaraderie and networking? That’s what the Vancouver Island Business Excellence Awards are all about. There are always good stories to tell in every environment and economy, and these Awards were created for exactly that purpose: Celebrating successes of companies in our economy in a variety of sectors. The pages of this Souvenir Booklet are filled with profiles, photos and contact Information for some of the most successful businesses on Vancouver Island over the 2014 calendar year. There are some amazing stories to be told, and we are grateful to have the opportunity to highlight these as sterling examples of what can be, and is being done, in our region. This event is brought to you by our generous Gold Sponsors: Hayes Stewart Little Chartered Accountants and the Royal Bank of Canada, as well as Grieg Seafood, which is sponsoring the Ocean Products category. Without them, the Business Excellence Awards would not be possible. And of course, this also wouldn’t be possible without all the businesses that have been nominated for the 17 categories in this year’s awards. Business Examiner Victoria and Business Examiner Vancouver Island tell stories, and the Vancouver Island Business Excellence Awards gives them a great opportunity to highlight some of the biggest and brightest starts of the year. They are honored to be able to combine their efforts to put together this night to remember.
Mark MacDonald President
Master of Ceremonies Astrid Braunschmidt CTV Vancouver Island Changing weather patterns have followed Astrid since birth. Her first Christmas was a bitterly cold -38°C in Toronto, Ontario. From the time she was six until she was nine, Astrid and her family endured the seemingly endless grey, wet weather of Scotland. Upon returning to Canada in 1990, her family settled on the mild west coast…and they haven’t left. Astrid was just 13 years old when she got the TV bug. It all began when she decided to volunteer at the local community cable station as part of her high school work experience program. From there, Astrid studied at the University of Victoria and graduated from Camosun College’s Applied Communication Program. In 2001, she joined the CTV News team as a videographer, working her way to the anchor desk, before settling in front of the green screen. Astrid’s love of travel and feeble attempts at gardening have fueled her passion for weather forecasting and reporting. She’s quite sure that the more she understands the microclimates on Vancouver Island, the better her garden will grow! When she’s not in-studio or spending time with her family, Astrid works with many local charities and non-profit organizations. Astrid and her husband have two boys and a shih tzu named Princess. 15th Annual Business Excellence Awards 3
Agriculture Coastal Black Estate Winery Established in 2009, Coastal Black is a family owned fruit winery and meadery located in Black Creek. The winery was opened as part of a diversification our family made as we transitioned out of dairy farming. We are primarily a fruit production farm, and we sell all of our products under the same Coastal Black logo. The majority of fruit we produce is sold off farm, with only select fruit being kept for wine production. We sell a lot of our fruit into the fresh market, and we supply nearly all grocery chains on Vancouver Island. Alongside wine and fruit production, we also host two, monthlong festivals which attract over 24,000 visitors. Coastal Black Estate Winery Black Creek (250) 337-8325 www.coastalblack.ca
Daldas Farms Ltd. We are a second generation family dairy farm located in Black Creek, Vancouver Island, B.C. and ship our milk to the local processing plant in Courtenay. Our parents started out the dairy enterprise in 1971 (43 years ago). My father continued to work as an electrician off the farm as well during the first few years to help pay the bills while my mother worked on the farm and cared for a young family. They both worked very hard, took little out of the business and re invested most of their earnings back into the farm. Our family has all worked together and with the help of some hired staff, we have been able to grow the business to where it is today. Daldas Farms Ltd. Merridale Ciderworks Corp. Merridale, located in the Cowichan Valley, is BC’s first estate cidery. Now 25 years old, it has become a destination that has remained true to its artisan roots. The cider is crafted from cider apple varieties that have been proven for centuries in England, France, and Germany to create award-winning cider made from 100% pure juice. Being purists, we do not use concentrates, chemicals at bottling, or fine filtration of juice. We ferment our juice slowly and naturally, to delicately bring out all of the flavour the fruit has to offer. Our ciders and spirits can be found in local liquor stores, at numerous music festivals, and on tap at pubs and restaurants throughout Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland. Overall, we sell approximately 165,000 litres a year in a variety product offerings. Merridale Ciderworks Corp. Cobble Hill (250) 743-4293 www.merridalecider.com

Agriculture The Birds and the Beans Farm The Birds and the Beans is owned by four young people leasing land in the Comox Valley. We have grown food for two seasons. The Birds and the Beans wants to farm in a way that “feeds people fully.” That is, we want to farm the components of a complete, local diet. We grow vegetables of all sorts and in all seasons, we grow staple crops (dry beans, soup peas, and grains), along with pasture-raised hens for eggs. We sell primarily at the farmers’ market, and also through a weekly veggie box program. The Birds and the Beans farms in a progressive way—in a way we would like our food system to be, rather than trying to fit in with the way things are today. We want our farming practices to be gentle on the earth around us - we want to integrate animals into crop production for healthy animals and soil; we want to have adequate crop rotation to minimize disease and pest pressure; and we want to sell locally to support the local economy. The Birds and the Beans Farm Courtenay (250) 890-9025 www.thebirdsandthebeans.blogspot.ca
Tugwell Creek Honey Farm and Meadery Tugwell Creek Honey Farm and Meadery was licensed as B.C.’s first Meadery in 2003. The combination of Bob Liptrot’s 43 years of beekeeping experience and over 25 years of mead making experience bring a unique and educational culinary experience to each visitor to our tasting room. Our award winning Meads (honey wines) reflect harmony and balance by blending varietal honeys and berries from our local region. Tugwell Creek Honey Farm and Meadery was born from a passion for bees. Bees are the central focus of our business. Without their success, we would not have honey. Without honey there is no mead. We make small batches of hand crafted mead (honey wine) from local berries, mostly from our farm. Our honey comes from a 20 km circumference of our farm. The core philosophy that all of this comes from is our passion for and the sustainability of our environment. Instead of keeping bees on large monocutural crops, we put our bees on wild forage where they get a complete diet that is considered the most healthy thing for the bees. Trojan Collision Trojan Collision is a leader in the collision repair industry. As a family owned and operated business for over 12 years, our mission is to deliver superior vehicle repairs through innovation, expertise and quality while maintaining the highest standards to meet and exceed customer’s expectations. Trojan Collision recently introduced a “lean” production system that allows our shop to fast track vehicles. For instance, a vehicle under 12 hours of repair and paint time, will go into the “FAST TRACK” and will be back to the customer in one day. By comparison, an industry average timeline would see the vehicle out of commission for three or four days.

IWCD has continued to grow through our continued commitment to our employees, our clients and the environment. IWCD is very proud to be one of Canada’s Best Managed Companies, which was awarded earlier this year. At the beginning of 2014 IWCD had approximately 52 employees. At the end of 2014, we have grown to approximately 70 employees. The number of employees at any given time during the year does

fluctuate with the number of projects we have going and the stage construction is at. IN 2014, IWCD increased its business by 20 per cent over 2013. This growth is partly because of an increase in staff. One extra estimator and two new project managers enabled IWCD to take on extra projects in 2014 over 2013. IWCD’s strategy of developing lasting customer relations also paid off as there were two repeat-client projects in 2014 - projects that were awarded to IWCD without having to go through the bidding process, saving time and money for both IWCD and the client. Hudson’s On First Hudson’s on First is an intimate restaurant in Downtown Duncan. Since opening in November 2012, the restaurant has been a success on many accounts due solely to the dedication and passion shared by owners Andrea and Daniel Hudson and their small team, together since the beginning. The Hudson’s restaurant dream began well before the location was determined, however, when the 1906 house was presented the opportunity was immediately seized and their dream quickly turned into fruition. Based in the bountiful, community minded Cowichan Valley, Hudson’s On First has become a favorite for locals and a dining destination for many travelling from Salt Spring Island, Victoria, Nanaimo, and beyond.

Retail Jim’s Clothes Closet Ltd. Jim’s Clothes Closet was established back in 1968. In 1983, Don Ferster took ownership of Jim’s Clothes Closet in the Alberni Valley. To date Jim’s is leading men’s fashion, featuring a full concept clothing niche in three island communities. In 1993, the second location opened in Courtenay, which now thrives within the eclectic boutique atmosphere of downtown 5th St. At the beginning of 2003 Ferster hired Drew Bradley as a part time sales associate and now Bradley holds the title as general manager. In 2012, they decided to double the size of their foot print in Downtown Courtenay by moving locations on 5th street. Jim’s opened the urban inspired Campbell River location in 2013. While all three stores personally reflect the individuality of each island community, Ferster and Bradley grew the stores’ success with their uncompromising dedication to customer service, quality product, innovative fashion choices, and custom options. True to Jim’s motto “Denim to Suits for the Quality Man,” they have built a full concept boutique outfitting men from Carhartt work wear, to Buffalo Jeans, and custom suits. To achieve this, Ferster and Bradley build each store’s exclusive inventory by personally selecting quality items from many Canadian and European inspired fashion houses. Since 2010, on Vancouver Island alone, 7 independently owned men’s wear stores have shut their doors. Jim’s has grown to 3 stores, and has seen double digit growth over the last 4 years, which clearly has not been the norm in our industry.
