fter all the sport; football, tennis, cricket, athletics – and now the Commonwealth Games, I hope to get some time back for motorcaravanning. New technology is clearly popular in motor caravanning. Many people are pushing new boundaries in this innovative way. Some of our Groups use Facebook along with their own web sites. Your Club can benefit from these opportunities by working, taking appropriate care, with this new technology. If you haven’t dipped a toe in the water’s of the internet yet – its never too late to start. While the weather has been a bit varied it has certainly been better than we have had in some years so far. Our plans for summer are in place, if I can find time to get away from the desk, and hope for some settled weather as we cross the channel. Meanwhile you are in the capable hands of our vicechairman John Griffin. Wherever you choose to drive and visit, please remember to stay safe out there. Rik Whittaker, Chairman

CLUB PHOTO COMPETITION Can you support your Club with some fresh and up to date photos? We regularly need attractive and captivating images mainly of Club or group rallies including rally activities or of motor caravans in locations such as CLs or Night Stops in picturesque locations. These will be held on file to support the magazine and handbook production as well as the occasional updates of other promotional literature. Photos may be used tastefully anywhere so any photos taken in a public area of space are fine but if they are shot on private land or in a building please ensure you have title to the photographic image and all necessary permissions if minors or vulnerable persons appear in shot. Please submit images in the .jpeg format. Submitted photo files should be around 3MB-5MB, so even some modern camera phones will produce suitably sized files. For reproduction in print pictures must be sharply focused and have a good range of tones. Send files by email with your details including membership number, a title and a caption together with any other useful information about the location and event to mark@ artsindustry.co.uk. While this is an opportunity to support your Club we would like to say thank you for taking the trouble to send your photos in for our use by offering Club vouchers to the value of £10 for each of the top three photos. These will be appraised by an independent panel of judges and the winning photos will be used in the magazine or handbook. The closing date for entries is 31 August 2014 and the winners will be announced in the October issue.

fter picking up our new motorhome we made the mistake of leaving the plastic covering on the carpets for the first three months. This was a mistake as when we removed the plastic it resulted in leaving a sticky residue which we eventually did manage to clean off. We then decided to look for some carpet runners but found that they were not the right size or colour. Whilst we were in the North East getting some warranty work done on our motorhome, we came across a small company called Simpausha specialising in fitting new carpets in motorhomes. They do: loose lay bespoke mats; fully fitted carpets perfectly installed; 100 per cent bleach cleanable carpets; fade resistant antistatic insect repellent and all with a quick turnaround, usually within 4 hours. The outcome was that we ended up having a new set of carpets which are fully bound, bleach cleanable and edge to edge fitting. They did a fantastic job and we have no hesitation in
recommending them, you will get the colour and sizes you want with an average price of £247 for fitted and less for runners. So if you require a new fitted carpet or runners, they are definitely worth getting in touch with. See their advert on page 62, visit www.simpausha.co.uk or call 01207 299922 for more details. hilst on holiday in France our alternator stopped working. Unable to get it repaired due to a French bank holiday we decided to book into a site and use their electric hook up to charge the cab battery. To cut a long story short, we made it home and I rang my local Fiat garage who wanted around £800 to replace the alternator; they are not easy to get to on a Fiat Ducato 2009. This was not what I wanted to hear! Then I remembered an advert in Motor Caravanner magazine for
Autoleck UK Ltd and spoke to Steve, who came across as a really nice man with a can do attitude. He said he could repair the alternator which would be much cheaper. So we charged the cab battery and set off for Leo Bay in Kent. We left our van on his lovely caravan site and picked it up a week later, all repaired and for half the money Fiat wanted. The financial loss still hurt but I can’t think of a nicer man to give your money to. The reason the alternator stopped working was due to the windscreen repairers not refitting the windscreen gutter drain pipe, so for a good few years water was pouring into the alternator straight from the windscreen gutter. If you have got a Fiat Ducato make sure this pipe is fitted and this will divert water out of the engine bay. Paul Humphrey, Surrey Group Thank you for your helpful tip – Ed

Obituary Susan Kay It is with regret that the Lancashire group announces the death of Susan (Sue) Kay who, after losing her battle against cancer, passed away on 24th June. Sue will be greatly missed, especially by the many people who she taught to line dance in the Bury area of Lancashire. Our thoughts are with Sue’s husband, John, and the family.
Late arrival We were made aware last month that some members received their copy of the July magazine later than usual. We would like to apologise to all those affected. 8 MOTOR CARAVANNER August 2014
A helping hand reaps rewards

ack in December I wrote about helping some campervan owners whose vehicle got stuck in mud. I helped push, was splattered with mud for my trouble, and half-jokingly said that that was the last time I’d ever help anyone! Anyhow, I was down at Lulworth Cove recently where there were several motorcaravans in the car park, so I did my usual thing and put flyers about my book, Some People Prefer Hotels, on their windscreens. Or, if the owners were there, as well as a flyer I gave them my sales pitch emphasising that the book could be bought from my website, the Lulworth Heritage Centre or, for a reduced price, direct from myself. I approached a couple of young ladies, who after showing an interest in the book asked if I knew anything about locks. They were campervan novices who’d hired a VW camper, but couldn’t lock the side door. The hire company had demonstrated how to operate everything, except the important matter of making the van secure. There were four keys, three of which looked very similar, but none of which would turn in the lock! I was wary of forcing a key and damaging it, but didn’t want to lose face by giving up. After fiddling about for five minutes or so, I wondered
if the door handle needed to be moved before the lock would engage, and much to our combined relief discovered that, once the handle had been twisted upwards through 90°, one of the keys turned and locked the door. Whilst all this was going on, one of the ladies, whose name was Saffron, was impressed by the blurb on my flyer and said she’d buy a book. Then, much to my surprise and delight, her companion, Stella, said she’d also buy one. I signed both copies and they allowed me to take a photo of them holding their books, which they agreed I could use for this article. So, this time, my reward for helping fellow motorcaravanners was two book sales, which was far better than, when covered in mud, I declared “That’s the last time I help anyone!” Read Nigel’s many other amusing motorhome tales in his book, Some People Prefer Hotels – Motorhome Novices Tour Cornwall. Signed copy available from www. somepeoplepreferhotels.co.uk at the special price for club members of £9.99 with free p&p using code “SPPHMC” 5% of proceeds from this book will be donated to cancer charities.
CLUB NEWS
Members Incentive Scheme Of the 174,000 motor caravan owners in the UK only a minority are members of the Club – which just shows what a tremendous opportunity we have for growth. This is only one of the statistics contained in the report from Newcastle University which serves to highlight our growth potential. The interpretation of the questionnaires, which many of you completed, showed that 41 per cent of members joined as a result of recommendations from existing members – that is by word of mouth. So please carry on the good work in selling our Club, whether it be to friends, colleagues or a stranger in a supermarket car park. It is always interesting to talk to potential members and you don’t need any special skills. There is an advantage to you, as under our existing members incentive scheme you are entitled to a £5 Club voucher for every successful application. To qualify all you need to do is put your membership number on the application form. The voucher can be redeemed against your next rally fee or used to purchase Club merchandise, either by mail order or at our exhibition stand at trade shows. If you require a supply of application forms please contact either your group secretary or the Club office. Alternatively you can download the form from the Club website. At the moment it is not possible to join online but this is something we are working on. So why not benefit from this scheme and do your good deed for the day by introducing someone to the advantages of membership. Marketing and Membership Committee 10 MOTOR CARAVANNER August 2014

The Motor Caravanners’ Club LTD AGM MINUTES Balmoral Park, Halftown Rd, Lisburn, Co. Antrim, Northern Ireland, BT27 5RF Saturday, 24 May 2014 at 14.00 The chairman, Rik Whittaker, welcomed members to the 52nd Annual General Meeting followed by the Members Meeting. He thanked everyone for their endeavours in making the long journey to Northern Ireland and asked members to switch off their mobile phones. The chairman asked everyone to stand and observe a minute’s silence for absent friends. The chairman then introduced the members of council and Club officers and offered special thanks to Clive Hanham and Alma Turvey for arranging the cut price ferry deal with Stena Line. Agenda Item 1. Notice of this meeting The secretary read the notice convening the meeting. Agenda Item 2. Apologies for absence Kate and Leonard Jones, Geoff Challacombe, Gwen Loft, John Turner, Brian and Nora Medley, Janet Macey David and Julie Appleby, Colin and Tina Stockall, Brian and Jacky Robinson, Maggie Bartlett, Sheila Lawton, Audrey and Jenny Barlow, Wilf Simpson. Agenda Item 3. Minutes of the 2013 AGM The minutes of the 2013 AGM were printed in the October 2013 edition of the Club magazine. It was proposed that the minutes of the 2013 AGM be accepted, without amendment, as a true and accurate record of the meeting. Proposed: Rick Edwards Seconded: Kim Remnant Carried unanimously. Agenda Item 4. Income and Expenditure Accounts for 12 months ended 31 December 2013 John Griffin, chair of finance, referred to the accounts that had been distributed in the blue book with the May 2014 edition of the Club 12 MOTOR CARAVANNER August 2014
magazine and gave his financial report for the year ended 31 December 2013. John thanked Paul Maguire for all of his work as the Club’s financial officer to achieve this turnaround with the accounts. He also thanked all of the council chairs and their committees for their hard work and commitment in striving to make a small profit this year, although the National rally will have a small deficit this year due to the logistical problems, but should be covered with a small rise in membership fees next year. Questions and subsequent discussions covered the accounts. Derek Lawton: Asked why in the income and expenditure was there a large increase in the Club’s insurance over last year? John explained that this year the insurance expenditure was being shown in the correct way month by month which wasn’t done by the previous Club’s financial officer, so next year there should be very little difference. Harry Cuthbert: Under the income and expenditure shouldn’t the Club have made a small profit over last year’s accounts? John confirmed that the Club had made a small profit over last year’s accounts for spending on the members. Ricky Edwards: Noticed that we appear to have a lot of debtors, what efforts are being made to recover this money? John stated that they are not debtors in the true sense of the word because we still have bills to pay for all of these excellent facilities that have been provided for our members at the National. The chairman recommended that the members accept the Income and Expenditure Accounts report as presented. Proposed: Ann Edwards Seconded: Ian Hill Against: 0; Abstentions: 5; Proxy votes against: 5 Carried by majority

INDUSTRY NEWS
Germany adopts the high visibility vest
New assessment to help older drivers The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) is launching its Mature Driver’s Assessment – a way for older drivers to gain a trusted second opinion on their driving and is available for motorists aged over 70. It consists of a 60 minute driving assessment that includes advice on what action to take. The assessment is not a formal test, it is a 60 minute drive with an IAM-approved assessor. Candidates drive in their own vehicle taking routes that they are familiar with. At the end of the assessment, they
are given immediate feedback and a confidential written report. A certificate is given to those judged ‘Excellent’ or ‘Competent’ or there is advice that their driving needs to improve and what needs to be done about it. IAM chief executive Simon Best said: “This assessment helps keep older people driving for as long as it is safe to do so. It’s worth remembering that many people actually give up too early, simply because they lack confidence.” visit www.iam.org.uk

Following the example of some other European countries, you are now required to have a high visibility vest in your vehicle when driving in Germany. Until now this was only obligatory for professional drivers, but from 1 July the rule has applied to all drivers.
Driving in Italy
From 15 May until 14 Oct 14 some types of winter and all-yearround tyres (M+S in each case) are not allowed on Italian roads. This concerns all vehicle tyres with the speed rating L,M,N,P or Q. So if you are thinking of driving in Italy during that period check your tyre rating – your local garage can help. NATIONAL RALLY 2014
A big thank you to the National Committee I would like to take this opportunity to thank the National Rally Committee for all the sterling work they carried out both in the planning stages and during the National. The hard and sometimes frustrating times that the committee and the working parties experienced during the set up period and the rally itself in endeavouring to make it a success are much appreciated. Thanks to those members who carried out their different tasks during the rally including: looking after the juniors, the home craft, silent auction, the raffle, driving skills test, the fun dog show, inter group quiz, church service and those members who helped with the music and operating the sound system. There are too many to name, apologies for anything I have missed. The work of the volunteers from the St John Ambulance (NI)
was greatly appreciated by those members who were taken poorly and they were overwhelmed by the generosity of the donation from the members. Finally to the Northern Ireland group for manning the reception and running the ‘Little Tea Room’ and for their hospitality throughout the rally. A big thank you. David Denham National rally chairman 2014
Lost property
At the National rally in Lisburn, a female member reported to me that she had lost a gold earring. During the clearing up operation in the marquee a gold earring was found and handed to me, so if the lady gets in touch with me on 0161 284 1648, I will make arrangements to re-unite her with her property. A
s many of you visited Northern Ireland, and it seems quite a few were crossing the Irish Sea for the first time, it seems appropriate to report on some of the wonderful venues.
Antrim
Our one night stop at Six Mile Water Park, Antrim, was a short drive from the ferry terminal in Belfast. Dungannon proved to be a very popular alternative rally to 16 MOTOR CARAVANNER August 2014
tional and much more... the larger event at Portrush and its motorcycle races.
Bready Cricket Club
The pre-rally proved popular with a number of coach trips, at least one including Donegal and others visiting Derry/Londonderry (or ‘Stroke City’ – ‘/’ as it seems to be known). Entertainment on this rally included different styles of dance and plenty of time to meet old friends and make new ones. Our trip into the city showed a very well preserved walled city with much history for visitors to follow. The Guildhall alone was well worth the journey. Events during the rally were well planned and very
enjoyable with excellent hospitality across the board. The Cricket Club could have done no more to make so many visitors feel extremely welcome. Belfast City Hall
King’s Hall, Belfast
After the main event of the National Rally at Lisburn, a good many continued their vacation at the follow-on rally at The King’s Hall complex. This venue is about 2 miles from the centre of Belfast. Apart from organised coach trips many others visited this charming City using local bus and train services during the rally.
Larne and the Antrim Coast
The tourist website www. discovernorthernireland.com refers to the Causeway coastal route. This is reported to be one of the great tourist routes of the world. >> August 2014 MOTOR CARAVANNER 17
Albert Tower, Belfast
>> Listed as starting from Belfast and ending at Derry/Londonderry with a total distance of 195 miles, the section from Larne to Portrush seems to be about 60 miles of some of the finest scenery available. Our final stop on our visit to Northern Ireland was as guests of new found friends for two nights. Again, we could not have been made more welcome. The Monday turned out to be a “soft day” and
we visited Larne and explored a little of the Antrim Coast Road as far as Carnlough. We enjoyed a delightful meal out together. Before boarding our ferry back to Cairnryan from Belfast our stay was crowned with a huge ‘Ulster Fry’ breakfast – which set us up not only for the ferry but for most of the following week! Apparently, it’s not a matter of eating this meal, but of ‘climbing’ the plateful of food.

NATIONAL RALLY 2014
Museum visit ‘takes-off’ Harry Cuthbert leads an expedition from the National Rally to the Ulster Air Museum
T
here I was sitting minding my own business, when an e-mail arrives from Margaret Platt. “Harry, do you think that anyone would be interested in visiting the Air Museum at the National?” “John, Reg and Dulcie, and myself (from the PIGs) would be interested but I can’t say if any other members would be.” “OK. You’re in charge. (Margaret uses the military school of volunteering.) I’ve put it in the rally programme at the same time as the flower arranging.” I thought I could cope with that – four of us and perhaps a half a dozen others. Reg and Dulcie didn’t make it to the rally and the Air Museum, but 140 other members did – whether it was an interest in aviation, or an excuse not to sit through the flower arranging, I didn’t know! I had been told that because of the nature of the rally site and the museum, members would be escorted through the gates out of the site and into the museum. At the appointed time the party set off on foot (in the rain) leaving me as tail end Charlie. (Due to the kindness of Northern Ireland group I had a lift there and back and never got wet!) By the time I arrived the group were being given an introduction, where I gathered that it wasn’t a museum but a collection, owned by the members of the Ulster Aviation Society. We then split into four groups, each group with one of the Aviation Society members leading and discussing the aircraft and associated items. I gathered from that, that our members were
20 MOTOR CARAVANNER August 2014
interested and various discussions took place. Overheard when being shown an instrument panel from a Short (Belfast Aircraft Manufacturer) Aircraft, and having its purpose and operation explained by the guide. “That’s not strictly correct.” “Isn’t it – how do you know?” “I designed it!” Because of the limited space and the numbers in each party, my group were taken into the workshop hanger, seeing work in progress, and projects to be started. (Also piles of mattresses and other items being stored there from the infamous Maze Prison). We were then taken into some of the small side rooms with various exhibitions relating to the USAAF in N. Ireland, radio equipment etc., and the Royal Observer Corps. The latter room I would have liked to have spent more time in, as I served three years with them back in the 60s. (23 Group, Papa Wun at Ponteland.)
Because of my transport arriving to take me back I failed to see much of the aircraft. These included a Grumman Wildcat from WWll, early jets, Vampire, Seahawk and others including a Buccaneer and a couple of helicopters. Because of the layout and lighting it was difficult to take good photo’s of the aircraft, but John Weston took some, including these three (above), of different types of engine.Volkswagen 4 cylinder engine, WWll 16 cylinder Rotary engine, Fairy Gannet with Double Mamba turboprop engine and Contra Rotating Propellers. From the feedback that I received afterwards, it would appear that our party were very interested in the collection and all appear to have enjoyed the visit. The guides from the Society’s members were very pleased with our attendance and the interest that was shown in the exhibits. For more information visit www.ulsteraviationsociety.org

A surprise treat for the children saw a visit from the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue service, together with their fire engine. The children were allowed to sit in the fire engine whilst the fire officer spoke to them about it and general fire safety. And just before it left, the siren and lights were switched on, much to the delight of the children, who attempted to drown out the noise with cheers and their own noise.

OUT & ABOUT
Calm morning at Ullswater. Photo: Stewart Smith courtesy of www.golakes.co.uk
A predominantly rural county, Cumbria is considered one of the most beautiful regions of the UK. Motor Caravanner takes a closer look
River deep, mountain high
C
umbria is best known for containing the Lake District National Park, an area some 30 miles across, as well as being home to England’s highest mountains and biggest and deepest lakes. This picturesque area provided inspiration for writers such as William Wordsworth and Beatrix Potter, and as one of the most sparsely populated parts of the country, it is the perfect place for a bit of peace and quiet this summer. Cumbria’s history is characterised by invasions and migration, as well as battles and skirmishes between the English and Scottish, as is evident by the many castles and ruins scattered throughout the county. As a result the area has no shortage of historic sites to explore, from the Roman monument Hadrian’s Wall at Bowness-onSolway, to numerous stone circles, ancient houses and industrial heritage sites. Cumbria’s unique landscape makes it a great place to enjoy the great outdoors and all it has to offer. The Lake District National Park in particular has more than 3,500 kilometres of rights of way, so you can walk or cycle to your heart’s content. There are also over 40 ‘Miles without Stiles’ for the most laidback of strolls. If you prefer to take to the water, there are sixteen lakes to choose from, as well as a stretch of coastline. Why not spent a day rowing, kayaking, canoeing, surfing or simply

fishing along one of these stunning shores? While exploring the countryside, there is a plethora of wildlife to watch out for. For example, the Lake District is one of few places in England that is home to a sizeable population of red squirrels, as well as the country’s rarest fish, the vendace. Look to the skies for a glimpse of England’s only golden eagle, as well as ospreys, red kites and peregrines. The Lake District is also widely lauded as one of the best places to eat in Britain. The region has three Michelin Star restaurants: L’Enclume, Holbeck Ghyll and The Samling in Ambleside. If that wasn’t enough to tickle your tastebuds, Cumbria is home to more microbreweries than any other county, so you’ll truly be spoilt for choice! Head north to experience ‘The Border City’ of Carlisle. A cosmopolitan city centre with high-street stores and small boutiques, as well as market towns like Ulverston and Kirkby Lonsdale, it will keep even the most seasoned shopper busy. Craft fairs, festivals and art galleries aplenty mean there is something for everyone. Also well worth a visit is Carlisle Castle, a medieval fortress that has watched over the city for over nine centuries. Visitors can explore fascinating and ancient chambers, stairways and dungeons and find the legendary ‘licking stones’. Here, parched Jacobite prisoners found enough moisture to stay alive, only to be executed on Gallows Hill. A less grisly attraction is the northern end of the famous 72 mile Settle-Carlisle railway, where steam trains are often seen on special charter trips. There are numerous Cumbria and Lake District camping and caravan parks – from Ravenglass on the western side of the Lakes to Orton in the East, as well as campsites near Derwentwater and Windermere. Don’t forget to check your annual Handbook for further details of sites in this beautiful county. RALLY REPORT
Ralliers swap four wheels for two! Yorkshire group heads to Skipton in July for The Grand Depart
W
hat a fantastic weekend we had for “The Grand Depart” at Skipton Auction Mart. After a dull drizzly Friday, the weather on Saturday and Sunday was perfect, as if on cue. We had 93 vans in all, with many from other groups including four or five first time visitors. Not enough room to mention you all, but thank you for joining us. The town was packed as expected from very early on. Some of the committee dressed up as French onion sellers minus the bikes, the crowd was a sea of blue and white striped tops and yellow tops, the main colour of course. When the cavalcade came through, the crowd exploded with cheers and laughter. Saturday from 3.30pm onwards
we had hog roast sandwiches, thanks to the Yorkshire Coast Hog Roasts. This was all in the price of the weekend stay of £27. Lots of people said how cheap it was as some people were charging £40 or £50 per night. Saturday night we had an open air game of bingo. A big thank you to the committee for hosting; Liz, Sue, Joan and Trish, also a big thank you to Elsie for helping out booking in, also Allan, Elsie’s other half for helping Lenny, Wee Dave, Dave, David, John and Pete park all the vans. Sunday we had our coffee morning. Most of us had to stay until late afternoon as lots of the roads around Skipton and Keighley were closed. Some went into Skipton via the canal tow path to the market and also listened to the groups and bands playing there. David S. Robinson, vice chairman, Yorkshire group
Can I express my appreciation of the Yorkshire group who put on this rally at the Skipton Auction Market? The organisation was first rate, nearly 100 vans being sited perfectly and quickly. We had walking directions to the town which were easily followed. We had goody bags with lots of tour information and freebies! An on site caterer was there on Saturday with pork rolls that were included in the price, and evenings of games and amusements. We saw the tour live – one of the things on my wish list – and Skipton was a terrific place to do it. Lots of happy faces and such a Carnival atmosphere. Well done, great organisation! Viv Lee, Chiltern group
A fantasti-cycle rally Hosting The Grand Depart of this year’s Tour de France was too good an opportunity for many to miss. Those with an interest in cycling were booking up early, many campsites and rally venues were full, some locations cancelled regular bookings to promote more commercial prices, and the general public got involved as spectators. It appears they enjoyed this fantastic spectacle. Yorkshire group provided a great venue on the edge of Skipton a short walk into town along the Leeds – Liverpool canal. The town was awash with yellow bikes. Many shops were upholding tradition by participating in the festivities. What an effort they had put in. So many window displays and yellow bikes; crowned at the top of the high street where the
Church Tower was decorated with a huge yellow Le Tour style t-shirt. Closing the roads for the race clearly showed that Skipton meant business. Crowds arrived to claim front row seats from as early as 6am and by 9am with most shops sold out of camping seats it was standing room only. Large areas were designated as spectator hubs providing large screen TV coverage with commentary of the whole race – since the riders tore up the high street in front of us so fast we were hardly able to catch a worthwhile photo. Thanks to Yorkshire group for a superb venue for this fantasti-cycle event. Rik Whittaker August 2014 MOTOR CARAVANNER 33

Tyred of false claims? According to a news item from the SMMT (Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders) we may not be getting the fuel savings and noise reduction we expected from the tyres fitted to our vehicles. Research from Emissions Analytics indicates that the European–wide tyre rating label may not be telling the full story over the efficiency savings to be had. Their tests show that in some instances lower rated tyres could perform just as well as higher rated versions. The research suggests that the relationship between rolling resistance and fuel economy is not necessarily linear, so expected fuel savings may not materialise. The results showed that if a vehicle is more likely to be used on urban routes, then the B-rated tyres are unlikely to 34 MOTOR CARAVANNER August 2014
produce much of a fuel saving over F-rated versions. However, if predominately used for motorway miles then a significant improvement is noticeable. The research showed that the B-rated tyres achieved a saving of 3.8 per cent on fuel and a CO2 reduction of 3.4 per cent on average, but the major differences were noticed at higher speeds, with the B-rated tyres making efficiency savings of more than 12.9 per cent at 70mph. Countering the concerns, Andy Mair, Head of Engineering at the Freight Transport Association commented that “The labelling regulations do of course provide valuable like-for-like guidance, which enables buyers to see at a glance the specification of a particular tyre.”
Expresso yourself Fancy moving upmarket at the friends-in-the-van-for-a-drink : nibbles interface? Then what about these ‘Leaning Tower of Pisa’ cups? An original idea for stacking cups/ ramekins, ideal for espresso shots, tea, or nibbles. Most measure 65mm in diameter and height, while the whole tower tops out at just under 400mm. I’m told (but haven’t tried it) that the slightly larger base cup works brilliantly as a sugar bowl and that the gloss glaze finish provides the tower with a pleasant feel to the fingers as well as providing a tough finish. The retailers want me to add that: “Inspired by the Leaning Tower of Pisa, these cups will keep you upright when coffee is added.” Ho-ho, don’t blame me – I didn’t write it, but I do think these Leaning Tower cups/ramekins are appealing. £19.99 from www.menkind. co.uk
Swiss Room Box Evidence provided by the Practical Motorhome Owner Satisfaction Survey shows that although a substantial number have downsized their ‘vans, an equally significant number are upsizing! I guess it depends on what stage in life you are at or perhaps more on what stage your finances are at. Anyway I’ve always said that I’d like a biggish ‘van and a small one and members have frequently asked about a camping module to go into the family hatchback to turn it into a day van with the facility for occasional overnight stays. There have been quite a few commercial efforts over the years and in the past I’ve made some myself with varying degrees of failure. Usually manufacturers didn’t keep them
in their brochures for very long, though I have a feeling that’s about to change. Swiss Room Box offer a range of options to accommodate all those between those who just really want to make a brew and those who want to use it as a fully equipped motorcaravan. In addition they’ve researched which will go in each different model of hatchback. www.swissroombox.com

For several valuable minutes I was confounded by a lack of handles in general and of the fridge door variety in particular on the front of a test motorcaravan’s kitchen. WACKYS EEL H W Doggy friendly motorhome…
This magnificently OTT 4 X 4 motorcaravan and matching freestanding awning was spotted on site last year and several of my fellow campers asked what it was. Despite ‘hanging around’ trying to catch the owner, our paths never crossed so I’ll have to make a guess. Someone suggested it was an Austin Loadstar, but I don’t think so, though it is a close relative. I am pretty sure that it is a (military spec) Austin K9 (hence the doggy reference in the title). These had a straight six 4-litre petrol engine and weighed over
6 tons. Economy is unlikely to be its strong suit but you’ll never get stuck in mud again, plus if it hasn’t worn out in the last 60 odd years, it’s unlikely to now! I think the Landstar was the commercial civilian version, had only 2-wheel drive and a slightly smaller engine. I’d really appreciate it if any ex-military members can add to my rather limited knowledge. Oooh nearly forgot, this style of body was quite common and those so equipped were used for a variety of purposes, though mostly for ‘signals’ FFW-fixed for wireless; or as an ambulance. A surprising number survived, at least four have been converted into motorcaravans

Grass pitches and a spotless toilet/shower block with ehu available. 23 units, including visitors from East Mids, Essex, Chiltern, Nene Valley and Severn Valley joined stewards Richard and Marie for a long weekend. Most arrived Friday to take advantage of the lovely weather before gathering for evening refreshments. Saturday was party night in the superb marquee to celebrate Phil Garnham’s 80th with drinks and buffet food. Also June Field’s birthday and Eddie and Eileen McDowells 5th anniversary. Many extended their stay until Monday. 32 vans attended Heacham Social Club. The weather could have been kinder to us since we had a strong north wind all the time, which meant that we could not get together in the evenings, but at least there was no appreciable rain. However we made the best of things with visitors from several groups. A home cricket match on Saturday and a car boot on Wednesday helped things along with many members going out on the good bus service. Thanks to our stewards, Derek, Carol, Malvern and Janet. 33 vans were at Swaffham Rugby Club where we had good weather and use of the clubhouse. CHILTERN Contact: 07938 190337 44 vans enjoyed a three night rally in great weather at Bourton-onthe-Water. Roger and Linda did a fantastic job as hosts. Their quizzes proved challenging! The Faith Supper was extensive and enjoyed by all. A group walk to Lower Slaughter for lunch was very popular, as was the fish and chip supper on Sunday evening. The weather allowed a good amount of socialising during the day, and the BBQs were out! Apologies to anyone who went to Apple Acre campsite at Royston only to find the rally had been moved to Radwell Mill – this was an error by the site as we had formally booked with them! It makes the point that the Chiltern hotline should be checked before you set out! Despite this, 11 vans enjoyed the orchard at Radwell hosted by Linda and Renato along with Alan and Ros. The sun shone and there was much al fresco eating (and drinking!). We had fish and chips on Saturday, complemented by wine provided by Linda and Renato. Another excellent rally was held at Moreton, so thanks to all those who came along. 19 vans attended this lovely site for the Chiltern rally hosted by Gabrielle and Peter. Despite the weather having difficulty in deciding what to do, there was ample opportunity to socialise in sunshine. Some folk walked into Thame for the exercise (well, there is a lovely café specialising in drinking chocolate!). Quizzes kept the grey cells active, and the raffle was entertaining.
Another splendid rally run by Paul and Vanessa at Taplow. Lots of quizzes and an excellent buffet supper in the clubhouse. EAST MIDLANDS Contact: 07855 388289 Moira Miner’s Welfare 5-8 June Our stewards for the weekend, Champa, Dave, Carol and Dave met the challenge of poor pitches but managed to park up arrivals in a suitable area, albeit further from facilities. The clubhouse was open for business and bingo, so members went for a game a pint and a natter for the evening on Thursday. Coffee morning on Friday was a relaxed affair that finished at about midday. The rest of the day was spent on the many walks in and around the area, and relaxing in the sunshine. In the evening, most members drifted to the clubhouse for drinks and chit-chat. At Saturday coffee morning, despite a downpour, our vice chairman, Dave Healey, thanked all for attending. Good job we had two awnings and a gazebo to shelter under! He welcomed our new members and our visitors, and especially thanked the stewards without whom there would be no rally. Some members then went to Ashby by bus, others went for walks or sat in the sun, which decided to shine again. The evening was taken up with drinks and nibbles in the club, which was very busy. On Sunday we were again lucky with the weather, a lovely sunny morning to wind up the rally. There was no rush to leave; some members stayed on ‘til late afternoon. Breedon 19-22 June Sun, fun, finely cut grass, views and aeroplanes paint a picture of our three day rally. 27 vans enjoyed a sunshine soaked long weekend. The pleasure of convivial company, encouraged by our stewards Michael and Sandra with their delivery of three short quizzes, a boules competition and constant repartee. At a well attended coffee morning on Saturday our chairman, Alan, welcomed and thanked all for supporting the rally and extended a special welcome to those attending their first rally or first ever East Midland rally. We had three units from Severn Valley, one Nene Valley and one from Yorkshire in addition to the 22 from East Midlands. Identified as first timers were Stephen and Sue Farrell and Catherine and Martin Davies. A boules competition attracted 24 members and after the elimination rounds during Saturday afternoon, a Grand Final was held in the evening. John Kniveton and George Sellers were the eventual winners. The Grand Prize Giving Ceremony, later in the evening, provided the following winners with their prizes. Scatorgories quiz won by Christine and Martin Ellis, Yorkshire; village quiz won by Les and Joyce Pert, East Midlands; actor/film quiz won by Glynis and John, East Midlands. It was late afternoon on Sunday before most vans had dispersed although several took the opportunity of staying on site. Excellent weather makes a rally but in addition to that, on this occasion, there was something that really ‘clicked’ with the ralliers. Thank you Michael, Sandra, Dave and Maureen. EAST WESSEX Contact: 07989 102902 Victoria Country Park was an
excellent venue, catering for all tastes. 23 vans attended. We had the police college open day next door which we were allowed to attend free of charge, with many stalls and exhibits including a mock up of a war time police station and a police dog demonstration. A jazz band, a pop band and the police big band played all day. There were also two rooms exhibiting snakes, spiders and many other exotic animals. A very entertaining day was had by all; of course the sun helped. The day was finished off by a fly-by of a World War II Dakota plane. On Saturday evening we played card bingo and Carol’s version of Blankety Blank. It was a really enjoyable weekend. As I was unable to go to Fort Widley I would like to thank Val Mitchell for her report. There were 13 vans in attendance, three new members and four first time visitors. The weather was mixed but mainly sunny. Harry, our vice chairman, managed to secure a room for the get together on Friday and Saturday evening – he also hosted a music quiz and Olive did the raffle. Maureen also did a weekend quiz and card bingo. What a great weekend Bucklers Hard turned out to be on the 27-29 June. The weather and site were terrific, 29 vans attended, eight of which were visitors. Friday was catch up time as usual. Saturday we all enjoyed the immediate facilities, there was so much to see and do. After tea we had outdoor activities which were well supported. Our pirates evening went down really well with lots of laughs and nautical singing. Those who did dress up looked really splendid, especially the children. The evening ended with a heavy rainfall, but on Sunday we awoke to bright sunshine, and it was very pleasant for the rest of the day. We welcomed Jan and Mike Trees’ new arrival Ellie. They were on reception and did a grand job. Ellie took up the stance of guard dog, even though she looked like
a big ball of soft knitting wool; we were all captivated. Many thanks to Maureen for her report on Bucklers Hard. ISLE OF WIGHT Contact: 01983 754562 Our rally for the old gaffers was a sorry affair, with only 4 vans rallying despite our hosts coming all the way from Cornwall, however quite a lot of members turned up for the meal in the evening. And the weather did stay dry despite the wet forecast. Our next rally at the Old Barns Sandown was a more quiet rally, with the sec supplying some wine so we all slept well. Our only problem was with our BBQ master who left his legs at home and so couldn’t cook. We had some visitors to coffee morning which swelled the numbers. Our next rally no.7 is being hosted by Andy Sutton and his wife, with helpers, at Havenstreet railway beer festival. Watch out for MCC signs into camping area. Happy camping and may the sun shine on you all. Bob Biles
KENT Contact: 07708 921121 I have been away recently on a foreign trip, and while I was away I missed a couple of rallies. The photos of Saffron Walden on our Facebook page look lovely with the sun shining brightly. Unfortunately I haven’t been able to speak to anyone about our Painters Forstall rally before the newsletter deadline. But I will write a report and put it on our Facebook page and website where as always you can find the most up to date information about our rallies and group news. We have two Kent rallies this month. The first is on 15-17 August at the Rare Breeds Centre, Woodchurch, TN26 3RJ. Set in 120 acres the Rare Breeds Centre offers so much to see and do for the whole family from butterflies, farm animals, falconry, woodland walks, tractor rides and even pig racing! There is also a restaurant for snacks and meals and even a Sunday Roast (was just £5 last time). The rally field is within the grounds but just outside the August 2014 MOTOR CARAVANNER 43

Little Easton Manor 13-15 June What a lovely venue this is, just the place to relax and unwind, and we did just that after the marquee and tea tent were erected for the first time this year. All the fishermen then went and settled down to enjoy a weekend of fishing. Friday evening most of us congregated in the marquee for a natter and a game of bingo. While on Saturday a few strolled down the lane to the local pub for lunch and got back just in time to join us for tea and cake, the evening was spent doing music quizzes and having a laugh – in all a very
enjoyable evening. We had visitors from Chiltern and Surrey, and Essex members Janet and Kevin rallying for the first time. On Sunday, a few of us stayed and spent the afternoon enjoying the sunshine. Brightlingsea 27-29 June What a fantastic turn out we had for this rally at such a lovely venue, with walks round the marina and the town. Quite a few members took their grandchildren at midday crabbing using the local pub as refuge when it rained. Saturday night it was all over to the scout hall for a quiz night which was a good laugh and very competitive with only one point separating the top three teams. We also celebrated Steve Wynn’s birthday with him supplying us all with wine, beer and nibbles which was very much appreciated. Sunday after coffee morning most members departed while some caught the foot ferry and spent the afternoon on Point Clear and East Mersea. Although the weather was bad on Saturday the majority of members still went out and about dodging the showers and enjoying the weekend. Carol and Brian

entrance which is the perfect location for the family to visit us on one of our rallies where they can then spend the day in the centre. Parking is on grass and we will have the marquee up for the evening. Directions: There are many routes involving smaller roads but the easiest is from jct 10 off the M20 then follow signs for A2070 to Hastings, stay on this road and take the turning right signposted to Hamstreet. Take a left and follow the road past the school which is on your right. You will see a railway bridge. Pass beneath the bridge and take the next turning right onto the B2067 towards Warehorne and Tenterden. The Rare Breeds Centre is on the right hand side of the road after about three miles. The following weekend, 22-25 August, is the Summer Bank Holiday weekend at Dane Court Grammar School, Broadstairs Road, CT10 2RT. Although the town is not new to us the venue is. Details are below so please do not go to the wrong school! Broadstairs is a fantastic location for the summer with what I think is one of the best and cleanest sandy beaches in Kent. With great imagination we have decided to make it a ‘beach party’ themed weekend so we want you to wear the loudest Hawaiian shirts and Bermuda shorts you can find and we’ll provide the punch. There is much to do in and around Broadstairs including their free Summer Sounds concerts at the Bandstand on the beach. I also understand that there is a new micropub just around the corner from our site. Have a look at our webpage for more info. Directions: Leave M2 eastbound on to A299 towards Ramsgate then keep following signs to Broadstairs (A256). Eventually turn right on roundabout onto Broadstairs Road (A255) towards Broadstairs. After 150yds, first school on right. As always for the most up to date information about Kent group rallies please join our Facebook page or our website at Kentgroupmcc.weebly.com. LANCASHIRE 13-15 June, Settle, N. Yorkshire Our hosts were Don, Mags, Carol and Jeff. There were 48 vans in total. Yorkshire, NWM&NW and Lancashire. On Friday night our hosts welcomed us and we started the night with a good old game of bingo! It’s always a laugh the way Allan calls the bingo, and even better for the winners. Settle is a beautiful village and the weather was kind to us. Some of our members played outdoor games, others walked into the village. Late afternoon brought us the most excitement, when the air ambulance which you see on BBC1 came down and landed in the adjacent field. They had been called as one of the climbers on the rock face fell and hurt himself. While they were waiting for the rescue team to bring him down, Sam, the lady air crew member, let us take photos of her and the crew. We had a quick whip round for the air ambulance. They finally brought the man down and he was flown to Preston hospital. Saturday night we had take your pick, dancing and music. Sunday morning brought tea, coffee and biscuits. The vice chairman, Don Hooley, thanked everyone who had helped, and wished us all a safe journey home. 20-22 June, Billington & Langho Our hosts were Sue, Kath, Bill and Beattie. 42 vans, one Scottish. Saturday afternoon was very busy. We were all going to a wedding! Bill and Beattie were married during the week and were having their wedding reception with all their friends at the Lancashire group. We were so honoured. The evening came and we were all in our glad rags, waiting for the bride and groom to arrive. The evening went so well, and we all had a great time! Speeches, photographs, dancing and some singers made the night complete. Congratulations once again Bill and Beattie, from all your friends at the
Lancashire group. At our coffee morning the talk was all about the wedding. Our vice chairman gave his thanks to everybody and wished us all a safe journey home. NENE VALLEY Contact: 01604 754816 We had 13 vans including three from Chiltern group at our Cherry Tree Farm rally. On the whole the weather was very kind to us, but there was a scramble into the tent on Friday evening when the heavens opened for a short burst. The rest of the weekend was sunny and reasonably warm. Peggy and Alan did a sterling job of stewarding for us and made sure none of us were tempted to lure the free range chickens roaming around into our vans for Sunday lunch! birthday the following week. With so many members away on holiday or poorly, Jane and Denis stewarded just 8 vans at our Manor Farm rally in Brixworth. Despite the rain and wind they made the weekend very enjoyable. Manor Farm Shop hosted a barn dance in their rather large, clean and warm barn. About 200 people attended the dance and the professional band and caller kept everyone on their feet. Despite the excellent calling there were still some dancers who could not master the dances no matter how much they tried. It all added to the general atmosphere when everyone dissolved into fits of laughter. With a very reasonable bar and an excellent larger than average ploughman’s supper for everyone, we all really needed the exercise the dances gave us. Join us from 8th to 10th August at Dog Lane Fisheries and Lakeside Camping Park. We start at 2pm. The site is in the heart of the beautiful Warwickshire countryside, overlooked by the village of Napton. It’s ideal for peace and relaxation. There are three lakes with carp, bream, tench or roach. There are several rural walks to take with stunning views. The address is Napton-on-the-Hill, near Southam, CV47 8PE. From the A425 Daventry to Southam, approaching Napton, turn left to go up the hill at the King’s Head pub. At the top bear left towards Priors Marston. The site is on the right approximately ½ mile. Our August Bank Holiday rally is at Yarwell Mill Caravan Park, near Wansford, PE8 6PS, from 22nd to 26th August starting at noon. The cost is £10.00 pupn plus a rally fee. There are many scenic walks and quiet villages to explore including Wansford and Nassington. The historic Nene Valley Steam Railway is located a short walk from the park along the Nene Valley Way. N. COUNTIES Contact: 07812 950309 A total of 26 vans turned up for our first visit to Durham Rugby Club for some years, with 3 visitors from Yorkshire, and one each from East Midlands and Scotland. Thanks to Lesley Keegans for hosting the rally. Many members took advantage of the short walk into Durham. 27 vans enjoyed a fine weekend at Hawes Auction Mart including visitors from Anglia, Yorkshire, Sussex and Lancashire. Hosts Roger and Anne Allen organised a supper so everyone could help Bob Boast celebrate his 84th birthday. Bob made his own cake which everyone enjoyed so much there was none left for those of us who were still on our travels in Ireland. The sun shone at Beadnell where 29 vans enjoyed the scenic beauty of the Northumberland coast; many walking up to Seahouses and even as far as Bamburgh Castle. Hosts Lilian and Alan Corbett welcomed visitors from Essex and Scotland and new members Mr and Mrs Cole. Good use was made of the Tyne tunnel with some interesting quizzes. On Saturday night some die hard fans visited the local hostelry to watch the England match. The following weekend at Seaburn we needed two Tyne tunnels to house the occupants of 47 vans including some 11 visitors from East Midlands, S&W Wales, Essex, Yorkshire and Spanish. Hosts Mark, Sue, Aaron and Owen were ably assisted by Pam and Dave who brought with them a hint of Spain with a Spanish ‘meet and greet’ on Friday night. Saturday night Mark and Sue did a game of scategories which produced some interesting answers
– luckily there were no kids present! Sunday was a rather quieter evening but nevertheless enjoyable. The third of our coastal venues this month saw 32 vans at Whitley Bay Rugby Club hosted by Margaret and myself. We had visitors from Yorkshire and Essex. We were well entertained by the local scouts who held a fun day on the adjoining pitch, the kids enjoyed the climbing wall and archery while the bigger kids stuck to the tombolas. Three of our members won prizes on their raffle. Others visited the shops in Whitley Bay and Tynemouth. On Saturday the rugby club organised a BBQ for us, followed by a games and quiz evening, followed by dancing. Thanks to Mark for his help with this. Sunday we were able to watch the sportsmen of tomorrow with the junior rugby training taking place while we had our coffee morning. Sunday evening saw us back in the clubhouse for a quiz and a natter. Alan Bennet Date: 1-4 Aug Venue: Herrington Country Park, Chester Road, Houghton-le-Spring, DH4 7EL. It was quite late when 22 vans arrived at Armoy Rugby Club on a beautiful sunny Friday evening, where everyone was greeted in a most friendly and warm way by our hosts Selma, Geraldine, Elmer and Anthony. Everyone soon settled in and one could sense a relaxing weekend in the making. The Friday evening kicked off with bingo and progressed to a great night of music (and the discovery of new talent – for further information on this you may contact Anthony’s manger i.e. Geraldine). We are not sure if the sun rises early in Armoy or we just went to bed late but whatever, it was a good night. We all awoke to a beautiful sunny Saturday which everyone took advantage of. The remainder of the day was spent at the vintage machinery and car show in Armoy, or a trip to Ballycastle, both of which were enjoyable thanks to the assistance of the good weather. A big thank you to ‘Selma’s taxi service’ for providing transport to and from venues in the area. Our Saturday evening entertainment was a variety show that really had to be seen and heard. Kevin McLaughlin once again proved to be a master at entertaining and he was ably assisted by an array of talent that we are thinking of taking on tour. We are thinking of calling the road show ‘Armoys Got Talent or Maybe Not’, because no matter what it is called you will be entertained. We had it all, from spoon playing to a standard never seen before, to singing – and it doesn’t matter if you forget the words when you can put it into a verse.
Yet again our English friends were amazed at how we can enjoy a night, little do they realise it is really down to the amount of alcohol. The night ended up with another early sunrise. The coffee/tea on Sunday morning was provided again by the ever-willing band of dedicated women led by Selma and Geraldine. Selma welcomed everyone to the coffee/tea morning and hoped that everyone had enjoyed themselves. The number plate draw was won by Jock and Bertie Law and the quiz was won by Pamela. Selma also welcomed four new/returning members who we hope will stay with us. As we all prepared to go our separate ways it was very evident by the length of time the goodbyes were taking that this had been a special weekend of friendship and fun. A big thank you to our hosts Selma, Geraldine, Elmer and Anthony for all their hard work, and to those who didn’t make it be assured nights like these don’t come around very often. Roley and Jo
Vernon on 07928 623379 or Gary Alderton 07715 629643 ASAP to avoid disappointment. Costs: £72.00 +50p rally fee Facs: Swimming pool, club house, cafe, buses to Aberystwyth.

Our last meeting was at Edisford Bridge Farm Camping at Clitheroe. We had the use of a rally field, but not the toilets or dustbins. Unfortunately we didn’t know this when we booked it, and although emails were sent out some of our members were still out after the National. So, some unwittingly used the facilities, which brought upon us the wrath of the site owner. This somewhat spoilt the weekend. But apart from that everything went well; good weather, lovely scenery, visiting the town and castle. On Friday we all enjoyed fish and chips. On Saturday evening we all went out for dinner at The Edisford Bridge Inn, where we had friendly service and good food. On Sunday morning we ran the knockout competition with coffee. Marion Kerby was the winner. The set subject was industrial architecture, which was won by David Foxwell. Well done both. Thanks to David and Diana Foxwell for their first rally hosting. SCOTTISH As Billy Connolly famously sang “if it wisnae fur yer wellys where wid ye be?” – this summed up the first few days at Upper Largo. Rain, rain and more rain. The usual panoramic view of Edinburgh and the Lothians was lost in the mist! However, the site owners had very kindly loaned us a gala tent which proved invaluable in allowing the members to socialise in the evenings. 15 vans attended, 14 Scottish and one from S&W Wales. Roger and Mair Jones had been touring in Scotland and joined us for three nights. We enjoyed your company and hope you’ll visit us again. Everyone was warmly greeted by hosts Lewis and Margaret who handed out a quiz on arrival. This was a picture quiz which consisted of 36 flags. Members had two days to come up with the answers and the winners were Dave and Dot McGeachie who managed to recognise 31 out of the 36. Over the weekend a couple of other quizzes were held. On Friday evening everyone was given a map of part of Scotland with place names blanked out which had to be identified. Not as easy a task as you might think as there were some tricky locations. Bob and Mary Geddes won this one. On Saturday there was a logo quiz provided by Kath. Michael, Liz, Marlene and Bill proved to be the winning team with this one. Sunday night was bingo night with Charlie winning the full house. Congratulations to the winners and better luck next time to the losers! On Friday and Saturday some members made full use of their bus passes and took advantage of the convenient bus route which passed close to the site entrance to visit St. Andrews or Leven, where apparently the sun was shining although it was still raining at Upper Largo! Thanks to Val for seeing to the catering at the Sunday coffee morning where Kath gave her usual informative chat. The lucky van winners were Brian and Pat

Grant. Thanks again to Michael for providing everyone with a bag of tatties. Thanks are due too to the site owners, who towed off a couple of vans which were leaving that day and had become bogged down. They also donated a bundle of carpet samples (they do own a carpet business) which were eagerly snapped up for use as doormats. Fortunately the weather had improved by the time the rally drew to a close and the ground had dried out, allowing everyone to leave without assistance. There are three back-to-back rallies in August: Lanark 8th-11th; Hammerlands 11th-16th; East Fortune 16th-21st. Whether you want to attend one rally, all three or even just for a couple of days you will be made very welcome. Joyce

Surrey group enjoyed the carnival in Farnham
afternoon, with sleet and hail coming down like stair rods, but it cleared up just in time for the members to walk down the hill in time for the carnival, which was very lively and colourful. Most members also wandered around the interesting shops in Farnham, buying up all sorts of bargains. Ted and Gloria hosted the rally for us, and held a sale of interesting items and gave a £10 donation from the profit to Help for Heroes, which pleased the vice chairman. Lingfield Steam rally, 1-4 August. If you want to come and haven’t booked, then please ring Ray or Beryl 01252 850866, there may be some room. Please note: we have cancelled this year’s Apps Court Farm rally, but Sussex have a couple of rallies this month, please check their group news and diary.
SUSSEX Hi everyone, hope you’re enjoying the lovely summer weather. Sadly Roy and I haven’t been able to get to many meets this year, though we have helped out where we could. Carole keeps me ‘in the loop’, and she tells me that the rally at Bishops Bell school was low attended but those who went had a good time. The star of the weekend was John, not only did he step in to host the meet, but, as it was a special birthday for him, everyone enjoyed a slice of the celebration cake. Thank you John, you’re an asset to the group! Surrey’s invitation to join them at Farnham Park was appreciated and well attended, everyone had a terrific weekend. The carnival was super with lots of floats, marching bands, colour and noise. Due to the bright sunshine, awnings, tables, chairs and wine bottles made an appereance outside many vans. Well done Surrey group, and thanks to hosts Gloria and Ted. On the 1st-4th of August we are invited again to join the Surrey group at Lingfield Steam rally and
Country Show at the Blue Anchor show site at Blindley Heath. This is a bookable rally, to secure your spot you must send £5 deposit to Ray Rolfe (01252 850866). Roy, myself, Pauline and David will be hosting the extended rally at South Harting. The dates coincides with the village’s horticultural show, where I hope some of you will be entering exhibits of flowers, fruit, veg, handicrafts, cakes and photography. All recipes, amounts and size criteria can be obtained by ringing me on 01323 738713. If you would like to stay longer in this pretty place the cost is only £3.50 per person per night. Buses into Petersfield and Chichester can be caught in the village, over the weekend there will be cream teas and a raffle (donations to this gratefully accepted). Hopefully, Brian and Susan will be guiding our walks around this beautiful area. On to the highlight of our year, the holiday rally at Selsey. If you want a five day break full of fun and entertainment this is the place to be. The town has lots to see and in the evening you are treated to the best of entertainment. and they enjoyed themselves. I know I did, it was certainly different. The people were very kind and helpful, and you could tell that they really wanted you there. In Belfast we felt like celebrities, as most of the shop keepers and museums had heard of The MCC parked in the Maze prison. Maybe they felt sorry for us. The Northern Ireland group worked hard for us, coach trips, entertainment in the evenings, did they ever go to bed! They considered our every whim. The weather could have been better, but we always say that, don’t we. It was just one big family party, from start to finish, except John said, “Where were the late nights and craic?” But with so much going on, I for one was ready for bed each evening. Thank you Northern Ireland group and The National Rally Committee. On the way from Dublin we visited the Jamiesons and Guinness factories (where else). On the way to Dungannon, we visited my friends’ old home, Newbridge House in Donabate. Well, she forgot to tell me just how big this house and grounds are, also a farm – I had a word with her when I got back. Then onto Bready, more coach trips; I like these, as you get to know more of this big family. Then, the National, where you were only allowed out of the grounds in a car or on the coach. Why I wonder? Then onto the post rally in Belfast, The Kings Hall, where I would have loved to have had a peek at the décor inside, but alas I couldn’t. But a good time was had by all. 31 vans , seven different counties: Avon, East and West Wessex, Chiltern, Kent and Sussex, enjoyed our Farnham Carnival. John and I had a Rotary Event over the weekend, but we did pop in on Thursday and Sunday. It was lovely to see the Nationals’ best in show dog, Bess, from the Kent group. The weather was good, but for a torrential storm on the Saturday
show, cream teas. Extended stay if desired. Date: 21-26 Aug Venue: Selsey,The Academy, School Lane, Selsey, PO20 9EH Start time: 10.30 am Directions: A27 Chichester by-pass, take A286 south, turn left onto B2210 Selsey road, then on to B2145, on entering Selsey turn right into School Rd. SW PENINSULA Contact: 07977 289701 Pete, Cathy, Alan and Sharon welcomed 18 vans to Wadebridge RFC for the Royal Cornwall Show rally. The weather was kind to us and members took advantage of it to visit the County Show or to ride the Camel Trail to Padstow for overpriced fish and chips. Wadebridge is a lovely town and next year’s rally at this delightful riverside venue is already booked. We had funs and games in the club house on Friday and Saturday evening and it was a change to be able to lounge in the glorious sunshine for coffee morning. Have you booked your places for our xmas dinner rally at Hedley Wood? Don’t leave it too late. Another reminder that I will not be standing for the secretary’s position (or any other) at this year’s AGM. Surely there is someone in our group who can give a small amount of time to write the newsletter, deal with correspondence, answer the odd phonecall and keep the members’ database up to date. If you would like more information please ask, and also see details on our website. Hope to see you on the rally field. S&W WALES Contact: 07599 130292 We were welcomed once again at Aberystwyth Rugby Club, thanks to Val, Graham, Penny, David, Peggy and Dave for hosting this rally. The weather was good for the 47 vans, including first time ralliers Mr. A Richard, Mrs. E Brown and two visitors. The club stewards supplied a good English breakfast and Sunday roast for all that wanted it. There was also an evening game of bingo. Church House Farm, Llandrindod Wells was the follow on rally. As this was a new venue, the reports were very favourable with the use of toilets and showers and a bus stop outside for the town. Pam, Dave, June and Ralph gave everyone a warm welcome with 15 vans and visitors from Avon, Severn Valley and first timers from NWM&NW. Wednesday all were treated to a punch with cheese and French bread, followed on Thursday by a bacon bywty (sandwich). There was a game of boules which was won by Gilly and Roger from Severn Valley, good going. The weather held for Brecon Sports Ground run by Liz, Colin, Christine and Winston and despite a bit of confusion over the start day they welcomed 61 vans including eight visitors. We had three first
timers Zelda and Jim, Michele and Clive and Diane. Saturday night was a Twitter quiz supplied by Liz which had everyone all of a flutter. It was finally won by the ‘Flying Birds’. Despite a last minute change of venue to Newton Farm, Angle, 30 vans including one visitor and one new member had an enjoyable social evening in Richie and Linda’s large dome tent. Many took advantage of the coastal bus service where there was standing room only left. WEST COUNTRY There were 32 vans, 20 West Country and a mix from Avon, West Wessex, S&W Wales, Chiltern and SWP. All vans were decorated with bunting for the D-Day landings celebrations. All survived the thunder storms on the Friday night with all the days being very sunny. Tea and broken biscuits with camp coffee on Friday afternoon was followed by bingo in the evening in the club, with the aroma of lots of BBQs. Saturday night there was a 1940s style supper in the club. 66 members enjoyed spam and corned beef sandwiches with cheese and salad, followed by mixed fruit, carnation milk and cakes. There was a good selection of WWII music and sing-a-long with a Dad’s Army theme and a quick game of ‘open the box’. Sunday morning was the usual tea and biscuits with the draw and quiz. There was a good bus service which people took advantage of. 45 vans attended Warren Farm, Brean. The weather was glorious, people made use of the buses, and we had afternoon tea on Friday. We were entertained by the air show on Saturday and Sunday; Red Arrows, Spitfire, Vulcan bomber and others. Sunday was coffee and raffle which was enjoyed by all. Ralliers from S&W Wales, Sussex and SWP joined us at our rally at Shiphay Farm Colyton hosted by Kate, Len and Dave. The weather forecast was wrong again, we had sunshine all weekend. Some ralliers took the tram or bus into Seaton. One energetic 54 MOTOR CARAVANNER August 2014
couple even walked there. Saturday afternoon we were treated to homemade cakes made by Kate, thoroughly enjoyable. On Sunday coffee morning and raffle was held in the sunshine. WEST WESSEX Our rally at Bridport F.C. had lovely weather + good venue + fine friends = a great rally! Add to that the Bridport Food Festival, Beer Festival, a Steam Fair at West Bay, town and supermarket within walking distance, what more could you ask for? Maybe a clubhouse on site with a bar and skittles, open every evening? Done! 39 vans turned up, eight of which were visitors – if you missed it, you missed a treat! Look out for our return visit! Salisbury Rugby club saw the arrival of 14 vans ‘on time’ with several faces from Bridport rally that were enjoying a sunny motorhome holiday in the south. Total vans 24, 19 from West Wessex and five visitors. There was no entertainment for the evening, although some took advantage of a quiet evening to sample the club’s exhibition beers. On Friday the main hall was open for bingo and the Rugby Club’s own meat draw, about five MCC members were winners, amid cheers from those attending. Friday and Saturday was damp with showers, with even heavier showers on Saturday, seeing those visiting Salisbury market ‘diving for cover’ – umbrellas were no real protection. The afternoon saw hosts with two awnings and gazebos, making the punch and cake afternoon as dry as possible – fortunately there were only a couple of light showers. Some wives supplied delicious cakes and the punch slaked the thirst of members – an enjoyable afternoon. The hall was unavailable due to a private 80th birthday so no entertainment, although the club bar was open as usual. On Sunday, the chairman’s chit chat was held in the sunshine. Charity Auction Weekend Date: 21-25 Aug Venue: The Beehive Field Trowbridge Road, Bradford-on-Avon BA15 1UA. Costs: £5 pupn + rally fee. See Special Rallies page.
YORKSHIRE 68 vans were at Whitby, including 48 Yorkshire and 20 from various groups over the country, including Spain and Portugal, as well as six first time visitors. Friday was a glorious hot, sunny day, which dried out the field a bit. After tea we had a quiz from Millie, and bingo afterwards. On Saturday many of us went into Whitby. We had cream teas in the afternoon, then in the evening we had a male vocalist. The fancy
dress was won by Jacky Hinchcliffe. Maureen Smith kindly did the judging, thanks to all the 15 who took part, they all looked good. Sunday was a lovely day for walking along the cliff top paths. In the evening a faith supper then a quiz and bingo. Monday was a mixed day of sunshine and rain. The evening entertainment was Damion, singing a good selection of sixties songs. Tuesday more pushing off the field – thanks to all who helped. Thanks to Mike, Millie, Wee Dave and Joan for hosting. Tuesday arrived at Malton on a hot sunny day where we had 68 vans. 57 Yorkshire, 11 again from various groups including one from Portugal and one new member to MCC, Mr. and Mrs. Halliday. Tuesday evening was free and easy. Wednesday quite a few walked into Malton. Thursday some sat out in the sunshine while others ventured into town. The evening was a games night with the hosts. Friday we had music and entertainment. Saturday morning we had a table top sale and tombola. In the town was a farmer’s food fair market that many of us visited and sampled goodies from the numerous stalls. Our evening entertainment was singer Nikki Rogers. Sunday coffee morning and goodbyes. Many thanks to our hosts Sue, Trevor, Graham and Chris. Glorious weekend at Hawes where 15 vans arrived: 10 Yorkshire, two Northern Counties, two East
Midlands and first time visitors Mr. and Mrs. Baines from Lancashire. The town was buzzing with visitors, wanting to see where the grand depart was going. The town was trimmed up according to the stage of the race, which is The King of the Mountains. Friday evening we had a quiz won by Dave and Sue Wright. On Saturday most of us went walking in this beautiful spot, Hardraw Force or visited the Wensleydale creamery. If you weren’t there you missed a great weekend. Saturday afternoon Sue put on cream and scones, while Saturday evening we had a cheese anagram quiz won by Mrs. Muskett. Carol and Dave supplied cheese and biscuits.
