Every designer has admired the no-nonsense lettering of the American vernacular, those letters of paint, plaster, neon, glass and steel that figure so prominently in the urban landscape. From these humble beginnings comes Gotham, a hard-working typeface for the ages. -Hoefler & Co.

HISTORY Picture a time between the 2 World Wars. A sans serif style of typography was beginning to emerge from outside of traditional means. A style of type that can be described as straight forward, highly legible, and no nonsense. This is in many ways an embodiment of the style of type found in architecture, “basic building lettering”. The style is symbolic of New York at the time. Picture bronze numbers on office buildings, engraved cornerstones, cast iron plaques, even signage on pharmacies and liquor stores. All of this can be thought of as a natural evolution of neon channel letters. Rather than consciously following the same model, it is thought that these letter forms were in a way elemental. In the 1960s with the dawn of mechanical sign-making and later with the inception of digital fonts and CNC routers, they completely disappeared. In 2000, Hoefler & Co was commissioned to design a signature sans serif font for GQ. An opportunity to explore this old, natural and elemental style of type. A piece of public lettering on an extremely mundane building: the Port Authority Bus Terminal on New York’s Eighth Avenue. The goal was to showcase this new typefaces’ draft like precision, and the freedom to escape the grid when necessary.

DESIGNER Tobias Frere-Jones being born in New York in 1970, would get a broad view of culture from the elegant and affluent to the corrupt and derelict. Tobias developed a rich background in visual arts and photography at a young age. He was raised in a household of printers and writers, learning how powerful text can be and became engrossed in it’s design and form. This eclipsed his other interests. Tobias entered the Rhode Island School of Design with an intense type design tunnel vision. After his graduation in 1992 he moved on to work full time at Font Bureau becoming a senior designer and making many contributions. These included fonts such as Reactor, Fibonacci and Microphone. In 1996 he went on to join the Yale University School of Art to teach typeface design with Matthew Carter. He decided to return to his native New York in 1996. Tobias was awarded the Gerrit Noordzij Prize in 2006, honoring his contributions. He has also received the AIGA Medal for exceptional achievements in the field of design.
