'U\ -DQXDU\ DIWHU ZHW 'HFHPEHU After 209.1mm rainfall for the wettest December in 16 years, the new year has started with what is likely to be one of the driest Januarys.

Only 33.9mm of rain had fallen on the Peninsula in the month to 9am on January 22, according WR ¿JXUHV VXSSOLHG E\ 0U -LP 0RUULVRQ RI 8PLQD 7KLV LV SHU FHQW RI WKH average January rainfall of 122mm.

The lowest rainfall for the month of January in the last 16 years was recorded in 2018 with the month’s total of 33.8mm.

The highest January total was recorded in 2016: 343.4mm, which included a fall of 141.1mm over three days early in the month.

Patrols of the Ettalong Channel and Brisbane Water were conducted by NSW Maritime and Broken Bay water police over the weekend of January 16 and 17.

They were part of a wider operation that extended to Pittwater, Cowan Creek and up the Hawkesbury River to Wisemans Ferry and Windsor, named Operation Armada 2021.

Across the two days, over 500 random breath tests and 300 compliance inspections were conducted as well as a number of random drug tests.

The local water police were joined in the operation by Kuring

Gai Police Area Command, Brisbane Water Police District, Northern Beaches Police Area Command, Hawkesbury Police $UHD &RPPDQG DQW WKH 7UDI¿F DQG Highway Patrol Command.

Overall, police reported they were pleased with the behaviour and attitude displayed.

Gary reluctantly closes his jewellery business

7KH &RXQFLO KDG QRWL¿HG the Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal of its intention to apply for a Special Variation of either a 10 percent rate rise remaining in the rate base for seven years or a 15 percent, remaining permanently in the rate base, he said.

Mr Hart said he understood community concern about paying more rates but this was needed IRU &RXQFLO¶V ORQJ WHUP ¿QDQFLDO security and ongoing service GHOLYHU\ ZKLFK ZRXOG EHQH¿W everyone.

“We have been open with the FRPPXQLW\ DERXW RXU ¿QDQFLDO VLWXDWLRQ DQG DUH WDNLQJ VLJQL¿FDQW steps to help our bottom line.

“We are selling assets, reducing staff numbers and materials and

contracts, reducing the capital works program, looking at fees and charges and we have been able to secure further loans,” Mr Hart said.

“The last thing we want to do is put more burden on our ratepayers.

“But if we do not have a substantial increase in our rate income as well, then even harder decisions will need to be made.

‘For our community that would PHDQ D VLJQL¿FDQW UHGXFWLRQ RU even elimination of services that they need and rely on us to provide. ³2XU ¿UVW SULRULW\ KDV WR EH WKH repayment of restricted funds, which were unlawfully used, so that does not become a burden for future generations.

“This is a conversation our community has to have, and we want to hear from as many residents and ratepayers as possible,” he said.

Reports to Council audit committee ‘not for public’

At the age of 68, you might think that Gary Mellon is ready to retire.

He has decided to close his Woy Woy jewellery business, Gary’s Jewellers, after a 51-year career.

But Gary says that the main reason he is closing the business is not his age but lack of skilled staff.

When a number of his staff gave their notice in the space of a few weeks, Gary said he was unable to ¿QG UHSODFHPHQWV He said it was not feasible to train new staff and keep the shop going.

For Gary, who is a diamond setter and diamond grader as well as a jeweller, jewellery is a love not a job and it is likely he will continue it as a hobby into his retirement.

“It’s something I really love.”

Gary said he started in jewellery at the age of 17 and worked for Henry Scholten in Gosford before coming to an arrangement to buy the business with wife Christine in 1996.

“He gave me my start.”

Gary and Christine have worked together in the business ever since.

Hart calls for rate rise comment

Minutes of Central Coast Council’s audit and risk improvement committee seem at odds with a media release made by Council’s acting CEO Mr Rik Hart on January 11 that “we have been open with the community about our ¿QDQFLDO VLWXDWLRQ´

Gary said he believed in making and selling jewellery that was value for money.

He said better quality jewellery was solidly-built and was going to last.

People often brought this jewellery to him for repair, but he said he was unable to because it was too light.

Gary said his craftsmanship has been appreciated and he possibly had six months of work ahead of him, if he wanted it.

He said he was sad he had been unable to pass his business on, with both his son and his daughter having other interests.

Central Coast Council administrator Mr Dick Persson has formally requested a three-month extension to his term and it is likely to be granted, according to Central Coast Parliamentary Secretary Mr Adam Crouch.

He said that Minister for Local Government Ms Shelley Hancock had given her strongest indication yet that the term of the administrator would be extended.

Mr Crouch said that Ms Hancock

had told him: “I am committed to ensuring the Central Coast community has a Council that is serving its best interests.

“I have received a formal request from the interim administrator for a three-month extension which is currently under consideration.

Woman airlifted from FUDVK DW +RUV¿HOG %D\ A 48-year-old woman was trapped in her vehicle and sustained chest and abdominal injuries as the result of a three-car crash on :R\ :R\ 5G DW +RUV¿HOG %D\ on Thursday, January 14.

CareFlight’s rapid response helicopter was tasked by NSW Ambulance at 5:30pm and landed 15 minutes later in a clearing on Woy Woy Rd. CareFlight’s specialist doctor and NSW Ambulance critical care paramedic worked in with emergency services personnel from Fire and Rescue NSW to extricate the woman who was trapped in her vehicle for 45 minutes, while the road was closed in both directions.

The clinical team undertook spinal precautions while they performed a clinical assessment of the woman.

She was airlifted in a stable condition to Royal North Shore Hospital.

Rotary club hears about Cambodian project Members of the Rotary Club of Woy Woy have heard about the Rotary-led project Sustainable Cambodia at the FOXE¶V ¿UVW GLQQHU PHHWLQJ for the year.

“This Rotary led project empowers rural families by helping them create a sustainable quality of life,” said club president Ms Joan Redmond.

“Village families build schools, install wells, learn alternative agriculture, and how to manage community projects.

“They then pass on the knowledge to help neighbouring villages.”

The presentation was given by Kincumber Rotarian Ms Christine Owen who visited the project last February “along with Rotary

Rate rises are being rushed through Ratepayers have received a letter from Rik Hart, Acting CEO of Central Coast Council, outlining the case for either a temporary (seven \HDUV SHU FHQW RQH Rႇ rate increase or a permanent RQH Rႇ SHU FHQW UDWH ULVH ZLWK D SXVK IRU WKH SHU cent permanent increase.

Two Council online surveys have been posted on yourvoiceourcoast. com in succession by the interim administration claiming to give ratepayers the opportunity to have their say.

7KH ¿UVW VXUYH\ ZDV EDVLFDOO\ a choice between the 10 per cent temporary option or the 15 per cent permanent option.

The second one was posted in response to community feedback that many residents and ratepayers felt restricted in their opportunity to express their views about the option of “no rate rise – rate peg only”.

In fact, neither survey was

structured to allow a general H[SUHVVLRQ RI YLHZV RQ WKH ¿QDQFLDO mess.

This rate rise proposal, in conjunction with Council selling off assets, reducing the workforce and expenditure on infrastructure, materials and contracts, is placing a considerable burden on ratepayers who provide 29 per cent of council revenue.

Rik Hark’s letter provides no explanation as to what restricted funds are normally used for and why they have to be paid off as soon as possible, apart from incurring a burden for future generations.

Are there other options of revenue-raising that could be explored with the state government that could reduce the need for these considerable rate rises, without incurring long term debt?

It seems these rate rises are being rushed through without proper public consultation.

Ignoring a larger problem The Peninsula Chamber of Commerce’s media release of December 22 about the council’s downfall unsurprisingly follows the well-worn path to councillors, when paths to state and federal politicians are the right ones to travel.

Funding is made available with attached conditions with strict time limits, based on the interests of both governments, and personal political gain.

An example is the Performing Arts Centre proposed for Gosford

City Centre.

Instead of politicians accepting they are responsible for handing over problems that have made it impossible to select a site that ticks all the boxes without cheating, they use the situation to advance their political ambitions.

All indicators of a larger problem are ignored.

Even without the existing and proposed developments in Gosford’s city centre, selecting a site to accommodate the burgeoning needs and demands of residents was going to be impossible.

Did anyone in state or federal government recognise the indicators as a bigger problem to be addressed?

All comment from government and politicians targeted the strict time limit applying to funding and its immediate cancellation.

These problems will still exist after the departure of Mr Persson as Administrator.

Similarly, the Chamber has used this situation to advance its interests into the future.
