ÆRØ
– FOR ENJOYMENT To many people, enjoyment is related to something you don't do – or don't manage to do – every day. A little escape from the humdrum life. Not necessarily something extravagant, but perhaps focussing on good things and »taking your time«. Maybe sleeping in and waking up slowly, enjoying a pleasant meal in good company, reading a good book in a comfortable chair, or indulging in a long and deep conversation. Taking a walk along unknown paths or biking along with no aim – taking a break on a bench and enjoying the views over the sea, or perhaps trying out your skills at skipping stones. Making new experiences – together.
EASY GOING On Ærø, tranquillity comes to you almost automatically. The ferry crossing in itself creates not only a physical but also a mental distance to the humdrum back home. Even though we islanders usually say that the sea connects us, most visitors actually feel that the very crossing of the sea itself creates a pleasant distance from everyday life.
There is a different »pulse« on an island. Not because the tempo is slower, just more relaxed. And you feel it in soul and body. Here, we take the time – to greet and wave, to chat on the street, to enjoy nature and one another. To breathe deeply and relax our shoulders.
THE SWEET LIFE Where other islands may be renowned for their potatoes, we on Ærø prefer the dessert, so to speak. Here you will find small local producers of candies and caramels, chocolate, liquorice and ice cream, whisky & rum, beer and cigars – all made with the heart and by hand. For this is island living. Being here is a choice taken by the heart. Because we love being here – and we hope you will too.
ÆRØ – ESSENCE OF »HYGGE« »Hygge« is a natural part of life in Denmark, and the international interest in this concept has spread in recent years to other countries. Foreigners are fascinated by the Danish philosophy of happiness known as »hygge«. In a world that seems to become
more and more hurried, the need for slowing down and enjoing the more intimate things in life becomes ever more important. Danes long ago established themselves as a people in favour of calm and quiet and we are consequently at the top of the list of the happiest people on earth. Could this be because in Denmark we are capable of exercising »hygge«? And dare we claim that the Ærø-islanders excel at »hygge«?
WHAT IS HYGGE? Hygge as a concept first appeared in Danish writings in the 18th century. Hygge is not associated with any distinct time of year, neither any particuliar room nor a certain time of day. You can hygge summer and winter, but hygge mostly occurs when rain and wind rage outside. This contrast to the dark demonstrates the power of hygge: even during the cold months where our northern latitudes present little daylight, Danes remain among the happiest people in the world. »Hygge« has no literal translation into other languages and therefore it is almost impossible to precisely define the essence of hygge.
A MENTAL STATE Hygge is often described as a feeling or a mood. Simple explanations do not give justice to the concept as it may be a combination of several moments: a hot bath, a cup of coffee in the morning, a lit candle on the table, a good book on the couch, a bonfire on the beach, friends around the dinner table. There are many examples of hygge. Hygge constitutes a major part of the Ærøislanders' consciousness. The Ærø islanders really know how to hygge, and value the little joys of life. This is the very source of happiness which shapes the island society – and which is in such demand by so many in the hustle and bustle of everyday life – and we are happy to share our Ærø lifestyle with you. ÆRØ GUIDE 2020 > 7
MARSTAL – MARITIME TRADITIONS Marstal is the biggest town on Ærø and was once the second biggest maritime town in Denmark, only outmatched by the capital. The town's impressive maritime history is seen and experienced everywhere. For centuries, Marstal ships have sailed the seven seas and shipping is still the lifeblood of the town with much activity - not least the Maritime Academy which for more than one hundred years has educated and trained navigators for the Danish merchant fleet. Marstal offers both life and nostalgia. Here, men walk tall and reflect their historical pride of the days when their forefathers built the breakwater and fought the North Atlantic in all kinds of weather. The town plan is made without a ruler and with the port as the centre of necessity. This is why all streets and paths (snorrer in the local dialect) run from the main street towards the harbour and the sea. In connection with the breakwater lies Frederiksøen, colloquially known
8 > ÆRØ GUIDE 2020
as Kalkovnen (the lime kiln). The island was in use as a repair place for ships, until in 1863 it was leased for lime burning. The fine little lime kiln is still standing. Not only does the harbour tell the history about Marstal, but about Denmark, particularly about the two World Wars which took alarmingly many victims from here. The sailors who returned home after sailing in Allied service were mentioned with respect. »He was a war sailor«. No orders pinned on chests were needed here. It was universally known and respected. Those were the days, but history lives on. Just visit Marstal Maritime Museum, where »museum« is in fact a misnomer. This spot is the treasure chamber of the sailors, and they are not anonymous, those persons appearing on the photos. »The lady with the large hat on the quarterdeck was my great-grandmother,« says the guide. This sets the stage. Here one knows one's history. Some people find that the era of tall ships is over, but in Marstal they come back to life
time and again, such as the newly restored schooner Bonavista which was launched with »launching festivities« in 2019. Marstal has a varied business life and charming restaurants and cafés.Make a visit to the church from 1738 with the pretty blue pews and see the triptych dating from 1881, painted by the local painter J. E. Carl Rasmussen who actually had named Marstallers posing for the biblical scene »Christ Calming the Storm«. Along the harbour is a charming environment of narrow streets, maritime enterprises, skiffs, fishing nets, yachts and a few coasters. Here the former engine works has been revitalised, after it was purchased at an auction by three thrifty ladies, who have transformed the old works into a maritime growth centre with great reverence to the history and the atmosphere of the original engine works, »Motorfabrikken«. Visitors to the town will find fine overnight accommodation offered by the camping site, the youth hostel, guest houses, and hotels. Swimming in the sea unfolds at the beach tongue of Eriks Hale with its lovely bathing huts and the fresh Baltic Sea to one side and the calm, low water of Det Lille Hav (»the little ocean«) to the other side. As a symbol of the Marstallers' knack to take action, the ferry ÆrøXpressen was launched in December 2019. The ferry thereby restores the Marstal-Rudkøbing connection, which was discontinued in 2013, and is exclusively financed by private shareholders with an affection for Marstal.
CARSTEN JENSEN AND WE, THE DROWNED The novel ”We, the Drowned” is by the author Carsten Jensen, who himself was born and raised in Marstal. In the book you meet four generations of sailors who are all driven by a yearning for distant horizons and whose dangerous lives have great consequences for themselves and their families. As hinted in the title, the book depicts an atmosphere of downfall, but also of courage, willpower and affection. The book has gained widespread international re cognition and is the reason why when travelling abroad one can meet people who are totally familiar with what it means to be »a Marstaller«. At the touristoffice in Ærøskøbing you will find the folder »In Carsten Jensen' footprints« and you may also take guided walks focusing on the environments in the book – at Marstal Maritime Museum you can even see a shrunken head which is mentioned in the book! In 2019, the novel was presented as total theatre in the HCC Boatyard in Marstal in an international theatre cooperation. ÆRØ GUIDE 2020 > 9
THE FAIRYTALE TOWN
ÆRØSKØBING In the middle of the northern coast of Ærø lies Ærøskøbing – Denmarks most well-preserved town of the 18th century. The town dates back to the early Middle Ages and in the year 2000 celebrated its 750-year jubilee. Many of its houses are unconditionally preserved and the town as a whole is subject to a preservation planning with strict guidelines for the development of the town and for the construction of new houses and renovation of old ones. The museums tell the story of Ærøskøbing and centuries as a market town where shipping and trade were the main activities in addition to hinterland farming. Ærøskøbing Church at the market square is the third
1 0 > ÆRØ GUIDE 2020
church on that location. On the square are the two old town pumps that supplied the town with water right up till 1952. The old harbour has been expanded with a new marina and the beach at Vesterstrand with its colourful little beach huts is only a few minutes' walk from the town and the harbour. For the many visitors to the town, fine overnight accommodation is offered by the camping site, the youth hostel, guest houses, and hotels. Ærøskøbing is idyllic with its cobbled streets, hollyhock, climbing roses, and the small, well-preserved houses with their many peculiar details. Danish as well as
(the Danish place-of-interest sign), a national award instituted by the Danish Nature Agency, The Danish Cultural Heritage Agen cy and VisitDenmark. The award is granted to sites of national significance, out of approximately 200 Danish sites, two are located on Ærø. In addition to Ærøskøbing, Voderup Klint can also grace itself with the Brown Johannes Cross. foreign guidebooks describe the town as the Fairy-Tale Town. Don't forget though, it is not an idyllic facade, the town is alive, an active town that has solved successive generations' housing needs for centuries. The town's development has been rational and gradual, governed by natural conditions – what we would refer to today as sustain able. Just the way all other towns in the country developed. But Ærøskøbing is the only one that remains. In 2002, Ærøskøbing was awarded the prestigious Europa Nostra prize for the preservation of European Cultural Heritage. At the Tourist Office you can get a small folder which will guide you around in the town and tell you the history of many of the notable buildings. In 2013, Ærøskøbing was also awarded the Brown Johannes Cross
During the past years, Ærøskøbing has experienced growth and a true wave of entrepreneurship. Torvet (the Square), for instance, which eight years ago presented a parking lot and a withering grocer, is now a lively town centre with outdoor service from cafés and wedding couples posing for photographs at the old linden tree, which this very year turns 100. The local independent school has a great influx of pupils and houses up for sale have quite short selling periods - a heart-warming Ærø story. During the summer you can take an evening walk with the watchman and breathe in history. During the guided town walk on the cobbled streets with their old houses, you will get a feeling of the old-time way of life, while the summer-night twilight sets the atmosphere of this Fairy-Tale Town.
THE COOKING HOUSE Awareness of the risk of fire on board the wooden ships led to a resolution from 1787 which banned the use of open fire. As a result, cooking houses were erected on the harbours. In 1810, »die Brückenkasse« (berthing-fee till) paid for a cooking house on Ærøskøbing harbour at the end of the ship pier. To ensure its maintenance, visiting ships had to pay for the use of the house. The original function of the cooking house was discontinued around 1860. From then on, fishermen used it for boiling pitch for their yarn. In the 1850s the house was provided with a dormer where a small light was lit to guide ships safely into Ærøskøbing harbour. Today the cooking house again fulfils part of its old function as it is now used as a barbeque hut.
ÆRØ GUIDE 2020 > 1 1
SØBY – TOP OF ÆRØ Ærø is a small island but you will be astound to find how much room the island has for everyone – also during the peak season when the island is full of visitors from all sorts of places. The feeling of space is particularly felt on the north-western part of the island where Søby is the centre and where the versatile landscape at the top of Ærø has long positioned itself as an attractive spot for active holidays. From Søby Harbour, two ferry routes operate to Fynshav on Als and Faaborg on Funen, respectively. This is the home of Ærø's fishing fleet and here is the largest workplace of the island, Søby Shipyard, which has also been involved in the installation of the e-powered engines for Søby's
1 2 > ÆRØ GUIDE 2020
new E-ferry, Ellen, which was launched in August of 2019. The Ellen is 100% battery powered, and she is a role model for future sustainable ferry operation. The harbour is the natural centre of attention, and in Søby visitors from the water ways are welcomed by two pretty lighthouses. Each summer the entire harbour area is filled with exciting contemporary art when from June to September the Ærø School of Visual Arts presents its summer exhibition in the public space. Søby Marina has fine facilities, and not least a cosy and beautifully located barbecue area with benches and cooking house - do avail yourself of the flower pot with fresh herbs for your own barbecue meal.
In Søby, you will also find a beautiful church dating from 1745 at the top of the steep hill that forms the town. Here is also the old Søby Windmill that is considered the town's landmark. Near the harbour is a bakery with café where loaves and cakes are made from scratch of fine raw materials. Dagli’ Brugsen (Co-op) has long opening hours and a large selection of locally produced goods, staple goods and fine bargains. Søby also provides bicycle hire, a pub, holiday flats, B&Bs and a furniture store and you can enjoy the busy environment of the habour at Café Arthur. During the height of the season you may join a walk at the harbour »In the footprints of Arthur« (the founder of Søby Shipyard) (Further reading in Facts and on page 50).
WHO WAS ARTHUR?
Søby offers lovely summer memories for child families and presents a challenging playground on the harbour, a centrally located mini golf course and a beach with clear water, sandy bottom and a bathing jetty. The surroundings of Søby present charming villages, small farm shops and great vantage points. Right outside the town sign is Sæberiet, the soap workshop with the aromatic soaps and a wonderful garden with sea view. Here children can make their own fragrant soap during the holiday season. A fine tour - whether by car, bicycle or on Shank's mare - leads to Vester Mølle which stands in a pastoral idyll only a few kilometres from Søby. A few kilometres further on you find yourself at the Søby Ramparts, located next to the »castle«, the Søbygaard Manor House. In the opposite direction, at Skjoldnæs, golfers may enjoy playing one of Northern Europe's most attractive seaside golf courses, located on the northern point of the island surrounded by water on nearly all sides. The old lighthouse, which is still sending out its flashes over the sea at night, is
the spectacular club house. The lighthouse is also open to visitors who may climb the stairs and enjoy the great views. Are you looking for that unique camping ground amidst nature, then you are encouraged to visit Søby Camping - »The edible camping site«. The site offers overnight stays in small charming camping pods or in a romantic glamping tent, and of course there are pits for caravans, tents and motorhomes. Scattered on the site are delicious herbs, lettuce, and other vegetables for the site guests' general use. The site is located amidst nature, wood and beach which also form the focus for all activities on the site. Among other things, the site arranges fermentation courses and a knitting festival. Søby is also the platform for wonderful experiences in nature for hikers. Immediately on the outskirts of the town is Loddenbjerg Plantation that borders the large and very special nature area of Vitsø. Take the walk around the lake and enjoy the unique birdlife that is among the richest in Denmark. Here also stands the old, photogenic Vitsø Mill.
Arthur Jørgensen (1908-1994) was the founder of Søby Shipyard which today is the largest workplace on the island with a staff of around 100 people and at the same time one of Denmark's largest yards for repairs and new ships. Arthur came from Fjellebroen on Funen to Søby in 1930 and started Søby Motor Factory. Development was fast for the small undertaking, not least on the background of the fisheries adventure that Søby experienced in the years during and after the Second World War. Around 1200 engines were built at Arthur's factory up to the early 1960s. When that epoch ended, Arthur began building steel vessels on building stocks erected for the purpose. In 1967, the first dry dock saw the light of day. Today, the yard has three of those. In 1977, with the »Pia Arre«, Arthur began a new era in the yard's history by building coasters. More than ten of those were built, approximately one every year. In 1991, Søby Shipyard received an order for six vessels for the Marine Home Guard. On their delivery, the Shipyard received an order for another six, and this went on until 30 vessels had been delivered. At that time, the Marine Home Guard was full! Until this day, Arthur's life work, Søby Shipyard, 111 newbuildings have left the slipways. The shipyard contributed to taking a new step forward in the technological revolution by delivering the »Ellen« - a 100% batterypowered ferry. Arthur's work and spirit still live in Søby! You can learn more about him during the Harbour Walk »In the footprints of Arthur« (see p.50).

THE VILLAGES ON ÆRØ
Ærø’s villages are laid out like a string of pearls, along the main road. Drive through the village roads and enjoy the undisturbed bliss. Cows, horses and sheep graze on the fertile fields whose banks and hedgerows encircle the small well-kept houses and farms. Gardens with flowers and fruit trees adjoin the country road and in the ponds, ducks and other animals are thriving. Bregninge, Tranderup, Rise and Ommel all have their own beautiful churches of which Bregninge Church is the only »vejkirke« (wayfarers' church) on Ærø and offers tours of the church all summer. Bregninge is also known as the second-longest village in Denmark and presents a string of exciting excursion targets. Several artists,
1 4 > ÆRØ GUIDE 2020
for instance, have settled in the village with galleries and open workshops with ceramics and jewellery. Bregninge has a large and different farm shop, open all year round. Furthermore, there are primitive camping sites for tents near the beach and tourists can even go horse riding. In 2010, Bregninge was nominated the first »Flourishing Village« in Denmark by the joint council of rural districts in Denmark. Vindeballe, Dunkær and Ommel have attractive, cosy inns with plenty of hygge. The many villages have their own authentic beauty. In addition, Skovby also has its own attraction, the Skovby Stone. It is believed to originate from between 1100 and 1400 and was found in 1994. The runic stone is
now situated in »The Green Triangle« at the approach to the village. Kragnæs is beautifully located between Gråsten Cove and the bay of Kløven. Prior to the damming of the Cove, this was the departure point for crossing the bay to West Ærø. Travelling the local bike route 92, you will cross the dam. The village of Ommel boasts two harbours – Kleven and Strandbyen – both charming, authentic harbour environments with small boats. Popular and cheerful comments about Ommel make the village renouned for its round shape and labyrinthian streets – indeed an unusual and evocative environment with little shortcuts for the locals, but sometimes even islanders get lost.
SEASONS ON
BEAUTIFUL ÆRØ SPRINGTIME
for the season and the first yachts and tall ships begin putting into the ports.
SUMMER
On Ærø, spring often comes suddenly. The island wakes up abruptly from winter's hibernation, and at a staggering speed, flowers burst into bloom on trees and bushes in a true symphony of colour. And every year, the rape seed fields set their beautiful yellow mark on large parts of the island. This is the time to make a halt and enjoy all the colours and scents and the warm winds, for the flowering is as brief and intense as it is beautiful. Shops, cafés and restaurants open
Summer is the liveliest time on the island. Flowering hollyhocks decorate the old houses. The sun is high in the sky and the glitter of the sea makes the Archipelago sparkle. It is festival time, and towns and harbours are buzzing with people and music. Roadside stalls abound with local delicacies from luxuriant gardens. Galleries, farm shops and flea markets are open, and everywhere cyclists challenge the island at a leisurely pace. The harbours are filled with yachts. The beach huts are in frequent use. Happy and merry times are spent on the beaches where the crystal clear water can become as emerald-green as on a post card from the Caribbian. Characteristic of Ærø is, however, that you are always able to find a peaceful spot on the island, and not even the many summer visitors can disturb the characteristic tranquillity.
AUTUMN
In late September, Ærø starts to become more calm. The air is more fresh. Sun rises get a soft and golden glow. The ground mist stays heavily over the fields. On mild days, the sky is clear and blue. Leaves change colour and trees and bushes abound with fruit and berries. Rain and wind get the wood
stoves burning. Nature with its saturated colours invites you for long walks along fields and the sea. The entire island quietens down – it's time to relax!
WINTER
The sea, warmed during summer, contributes to winter arriving on Ærø later than on the mainland. The winter period is the high season for club activities, and with over 180 associations, Ærø has something for everyone. This is the time for sports and games, singing, lectures, painting and evening classes. On Ærø, we cherish the old traditions of C hristmas. Towns are decorated and everywhere you will find Christmas markets, concerts and an abundance of other activities. Christmas on Ærø is more about hygge than about the haste. There are candles in the window sills and the wood stoves are fired up. The aroma of cakes and cookies from old family recipes makes you feel good and is a highly appreciated change from frost biting your nose. Life returns to the streets; people have glögg and Danish doughnuts, and the festive lighting makes Christmas shopping on Ærø quite special. Winter is also time for reflection, and the many accommodations and restaurants »relax a bit« and recharge for the new season. But all year round you will always find both charming accommodation and good food on Ærø. ÆRØ GUIDE 2020 > 1 5
EXPLORING
THE OPEN COUNTRY SKJOLDNÆS LIGHTHOUSE AND NÆBBET On the northern tip of Ærø stands Skjoldnæs Lighthouse, one of the most beautiful lighthouses in the country. It was built in 1881 as a 22-metre tall, round building made of Bornholm granite. 57 steps lead to the watch room. The lantern is the central part of the lighthouse and it is extremely well preserved and completely intact from when it was originally built. From the gallery on the platform you have grand views. On a clear day one can see the Baltic, the Little Belt, and the Southof-Funen Archipelago. To the south, mainland Germany can dimly be seen. To the west is the island of Als and to the north you will see the islands of Lyø, Bjørnø and Avernakø with Fåborg and the Svanninge Hills in the background. The lighthouse on Ærø has a special reason for becoming one of the most
impressive lighthouses in Denmark. After the defeat to the Prussians in 1864 and the loss of Schleswig, Ærø was administrated by the county of Svendborg. It was therefore decided to build an impressive lighthouse that could be seen as far as Kiel as a salute to our lost friends and families. Access to the lighthouse is from sunrise till sunset and at a very modest entrance fee. Around the lighthouse, one of Europe's most beautifully located seaside golf courses has been laid out. The interesting nature preserve ‘Næbbet’ reaches 300 metres into the sea from the low beach hill on the northern coast into the Archipelago. To biologists, this is one of Ærø's most significant and interesting areas for birdwatchers and botanists and it has great recreational value. The area between
the Skjoldnæs Lighthouse and Næbbet is also a hotspot for anglers due to deep water and strong current.
THE FORTRESS AT SØBYGÅRD The impressive fortress at Søbygaard was erected by King Niels during the period 11101134 as a defence against the Wends and was abolished 1250-1275. The defences were ideally situated, with a fine prospect over the sea and the surrounding areas. In 1788, the first attempt to reclaim land was made. A bank of earth was built all around Vitsø, and a canal was dug on the outside of the bank. The canal would take the surface water from the surrounding terrain and lead it directly into the sea. It was one of the first reclamations in Denmark and an area of nearly 11 hectares was reclaimed.

VODERUP KLINT
It was not until 1964 that efficient drainage was achieved. Many rare meadow plants disappeared when the land was cultivated, and as it was no longer grazed by cattle, new vegetation took over. Vitsø was originally an inlet with salt meadows which were directly connected with the sea. In the soil are shells which disclose that this was once a seabed. In 2009, a 150-hectare nature preservation area was established with a new lake of approx. 52 hectares surrounded by salt marshes and fresh-water meadows. Three bird islands have been set up in the lake to protect breeding birds from predators. The majority of the area is owned by Aage V. Jensen's Nature Foundation. From the parking lot at Søbygaard and the parking lot at Vorbjerg Skov, which is owned by the National Forest and Nature Agency, you can follow the hiking paths around the lake. Some of the paths are part of the Archipelago Trail, which is clearly marked with blue signs on wooden posts.
VODERUP KLINT, A NATIONAL ATTRACTION One of the most obvious places to visit on Ærø is Voderup Klint, on the Baltic coast. An outstanding landscape opens up to you when you step out on the 33-metre tall upper terrace, where one terrace after the other create giant steps nearly all the way down to the beach. The slipping of the earth into terraces is caused by the layers that form the cliffs.
The many sunshine hours on Ærø and the south-facing location of Voderup Klint provide the spot with optimal conditions for rich and varied flora and fauna. Voderup Klint is protected and Voderup as a whole is desig nated to become an international nature reserve under the Natura 2000 network. For instance you may be fortunate enough to hear the croaking of the fire-bellied toad in the months of May and July. The same time of year, the protected may orchid can be seen in the wetlands in the area. Pack yourself a picnic basket and take a walk along one of the terraces. Or choose the hours before sunset when the sea is a silver mirror. You will only have to walk a short distance before you have a spot entirely to yourself. And don't forget that you are walking in some of the most beautiful areas in Denmark that most certainly should not be missed. Visit the cliff on your own or take the opportunity of a guided tour. See the programme on the next page.
GRÅSTEN NOR – FROM SEABED TO ARABLE LAND IN 24 YEARS Until 1856, Ærø was in fact two islands connected by a narrow stone bar, the so-called ‘Drej’ (an old Danish word for isthmus). Between the two islands, West-Ærø and Little-Ærø, was a large shallow, Gråsten Nor, named after the big ducal estate located at the western end of Drejet. In 1856, a dike was built between the two islands at the northern side of the shallow between Kragnæs and Grønnæs.
BIRKHOLM The island of Birkholm is located in the middle of the South-of-Funen Archipelago. The island is only 96 hectare and quite flat – Birkholms highest point is a mere 1.8m above sea level. The island boasts beautiful, old farms, beaches and great water with ample angling opportunities. Birkholm is one of the smallest inhabited islands in Denmark. Birkholm is part of Ærø municipality. A modern post boat operates twice daily to Birkholm from Marstal. Out of consideration for the dikes and the game, visitors to the island are requested to stay on roads and paths and to be careful to keep dogs on a leash. Ærøtours arranges day-trips to Birkholm including food and drink. Please see details at www.aeroetours.dk. For schedule and more info, please see www.birkholmposten.dk

GUIDED TOURS AND ADVENTURES IN NATURE ON ÆRØ Wild Food - a guided tour along the coast The multiplicity of the beach pantry will be a surprise to most people. During this tour you will get to know selected plants, taste them and get good advice and ideas for reaping and preparing. Taste sensations are spiced with stories about the coastline nature and the method of management. Get inspiration to start using raw materials that were known and used by generations before us. Tours at 4 pm. Rates: DKK 100/person (children up to 12 pay half price)
Days: 10 and 31 May + all Sundays during the period 5 July - 2 August. Meeting Place: In front of the Tourist Office, Ærøskøbing Havn 4, Ærøskøbing - close to the ferry berth. No registration required. Tours and workshops with nature guide on Ærø The beauty of nature on the island is found everywhere at the sea, on the beach, in the small plantings, and in the open landscapes in the rich flora and fauna. Taste the food of the wild. Learn about habitats and the interaction found here. Experience the entirety is found in many spots in the area, but particularly abundant in a meadow between Norvejen and the small wood Drejskoven. In just one hectare, there is a stand of more than 75,000 may orchids in bloom; probably the largest combined stand of wild orchids anywhere. It is in bloom during the last two weeks of May. In Gråsten Nor there is a marked-out trail of approx. 8km. You can walk the entire trail or parts of it as there are several starting points. Many people start at the airfield, others at the parking lot (the one with the toilet building) at Drejet. This is also where you will find info-stands and a yellow box with information folders on the trail.
WESTERN MARSH-ORCHID In charge of the project was the island's doctor, Dr. Biering, and by means of two windmill pumps the entire area was reclaimed within 24 years. The intention was to turn the new reclaimed land into pastures and fields, and the result was just under 1000 acres of new farm land. Particularly hay harvest and grazing became important to the farmers and this is still the main function of the area, which is also the largest coherent meadowland in the area of Funen. Gråsten Nor is well worth a visit for everyone interested in nature. The pastures abound with animals and plants of great diversity according to season. Among the plants, the beautiful and protected may orchid is perhaps the most conspicuous. It 1 8 > ÆRØ GUIDE 2020
THE ISTHMUSES UREHOVED AND OMMELSHOVED – SEE THE ISLAND FROM THE SEA In addition to Eriks Hale in Marstal, Ærø has two characteristic isthmuses on the northern side of the island that break the landscape by stretching several kilometres into the sea. Urehoved at Ærøskøbing, and Ommelshoved at Ommel. There is something special about narrow isthmuses; the nearness to the sea on all sides, and on both of these it is possible to walk round the tips that provide fantastic views of the Archipelago and the north-facing coastlines of Ærø. From Urehoved you have a view of the beach huts on Vesterstrand, the Borgnæs Bay and further along the hilly landscape towards Blakstens odde and all the way to the Skjoldnæs Lighthouse. From Ommelshoved you can look over the bay to Lilleø – a narrow line in the water of only 800 metres that was actually inhabited in the late 1800s – and Nevre where one of the most beautiful cycle tracks stretches on the water's

Seen from landward Ærø, the »heads« of the isthmuses almost resemble individual islands.
SEARCHING FOR FOSSILS On the beaches of Ærø you may find fossils like vættelys (gnomes' candles or belemnites) and sea urchins. Vættelys are oblong, reddish-brown stones resembling a torpedo and originating from belemnites, a species of squid that lived in the Cretaceous Period. Fossil sea urchins are among the most beautiful stones on the beach. The full stones have a characteristic shape with a flat bottom and globular top, and the most beautiful ones are decorated with small shield-shaped flakes and a five-star pattern with clear lined dots. Many fossil sea urchins are around 65 million years old. In Denmark, fossil sea urchins are also known as thunderbolts. It was common folklore that these fossils were cast down from the heavens as lightning to protect you – and lightning never strikes twice! Several houses on Ærø have a jar in the window with these beautiful fossils. Ærø has around 80km coastline for you to explore. Both belemnites and sea urchins are common and they are easy to find if you look carefully. The hunt for fossils can make a trip to the beach a treat for the whole family. Some beaches are better than others, and they can become a sport to find. Sankt Albert, Sjoen and the south coast around Voderup Klint are particularly good spots, other spots are for you to find. Have great fun with your treasure hunt on the beach!
THE HIDDEN PLACES On Ærø you will find the maritime pearls,
and childlike souls to go crab hunting in the s hallows or if lucky find stickleback, sandhopper or pipefish at the breakwater.
STRANDBYEN HABOUR, OMMEL
Kleven and Strandbyen – both harbours for the village of Ommel – and both popular destinations for biking, hiking or kayak holidays on Ærø. In Strandbyen, you will find an authentic local environment with picturesque fisherman's sheds and a cheerful atmosphere. Strandbyen Havn is a small private boat harbour with room for a few guest boats and the jetties have water and power. Next to the harbour is a child-friendly sandy beach. Here the locals meet on warm summer
nights while the children romp around in the shallow water. The beach is a nice spot where you can rest and enjoy a peaceful moment, or sit and behold the Archipelago towards Langeland, Tåsinge and nearby Halmø where only one house stands. You may use the tables and benches, for your own lunch. And a grass area with a small playground where possibly the island's biggest bramble bush grows – here you will find a profound wall of delicious, sweet berries in late summer. The harbour also has a stand with fishing nets for general use for children
Kleven Havn is bigger. Here you will find a primitive camp site where you may put up your tent and enjoy the night, accompanied by only a light breeze and the seagulls. You will also find good facilities for visiting boats; water, a barbecue and a new toilet building. On a nearby field you will find two very fine shelters – please see www.visitaeroe.com. Kleven Bådelaug owns the harbour and arranges annual activities such as midsummer bonfire, reliability races for motor boats and the annual call by the smack boats where you are guaranteed to be entertained by the singing sailors ’Den Småborgerlige Sangforening’ and where everybody is welcome. The boat guild is also engaged in maintaining and modernising the harbour with respect for its exciting history. Even before approach ing Kleven harbour, you will see signs of its heyday as a winter lay-up area for a large part of the Ærø schooner fleet. The big stone heaps, which mark the sailingchannel, were positioned to slow down drifting ice and thereby protect the laid-up ships. Ashore you can see other relics from the heyday of the harbour, one of which is a steam box used to bend planks for easier mounting of the outer planking of the ships. The site klevenhavn.dk will tell you (in Danish) about the heyday of the harbour, as a schooner haven and as a base for smug glers.
ÆRØ'S PAST AND ITS HISTORY At several spots across Ærø you will find exciting traces of ancient times. Barrows, passage graves and dolmens bear witness to the presence of our forefathers over more than ten thousand years. At Vejsnæs Nakke, traces are seen of Sankt Albert’s Church (originally built as a fortress). The restored site consists
PASSAGE GRAVES, LINDSBJERG
of a grave up to three metres deep and powerful ramparts for defence purposes which may be dated back to the Viking period around 1000. In the 14th century the site was transformed, as a significant church was built on the spot. Around the church some 50 graves have been uncovered, many of which are children’s graves. Other findings include a large number of coins which are dated to the time when the church was in use from around the mid 1300s up to the Reformation in 1536. More recent history, particularly under the duchies, is very interesting. The period ran from the 1300s until 1864, and along the way Ærø was united as well as divided into a number of enclaves. Ærø was outside the tariff barrier of
SANKT ALBERTS CHURCH the Danish kingdom which created a basis for flourishing smuggling which constituted the profession for a vast number of islanders. In 1750, Ærø was unified into one administrative unit. A monument at Olde Mølle marks the unification. At this unification, for practical reasons, the old Jutlandic Law from 1241 was enacted and even today some of the rules of that old law still apply on Ærø.

ERIKS HALE
THE BEAUTIFUL
BEACHES For many people, their lifelong love of Ærø begins on the beach. The coastline helps to define an island, and the beaches on Ærø are enchanting; each in its own way. Ærø's three big towns all have child-friendly beaches with crystal clear water and soft sand. Each summer, happy bathing guests from nearby marinas and camping sites all head for the beaches. You will hear children splashing and laughing and experience bust ling and cosy beach life. The beaches have clear skies that give you a feeling of room to yourselves. Water sports take place off the coast at all beaches – it is easy to move with the wind and weather if you wish to surf or sail, dive or paddle.
SØBY STRAND Well sheltered in a bay is the beautiful little headland of Søby Strand and here is a very fine sandy sea bed and a wooden pier. The beach is a mere mussel's throw from playground, marina and café.
VESTERSTRAND Just west of Ærøskøbing is Vesterstrand, only a few minutes' walk from marina and camping site. The fine sandy beach has a beautiful location towards Urehoved and 2 0 > ÆRØ GUIDE 2020
boasts the small beach huts like coloured pearls on a string. This is exactly where you will find the beach hut from the front page of this Ærø Guide. This is child-friendly, shallow and there is a bathing jetty. It is a tradition for the visitors and citizens of the town to head for the beach in the evening to enjoy the sunset. Many light a grill, some may find their SUP board or enjoy a last swim in the warm waves.
ERIKS HALE In the outskirts of Marstal is Eriks Hale, close to the marina and the camping site – and with two types of sea: One at each side. As a matter of fact, Eriks Hale is a cape: from one side you can swim in the calm, warm Lille Hav (Little Sea), a secluded, shallow bay between the harbour and the beach – and on the other side is the fresh Baltic Sea. Here are also the picturesque beach huts that sparkle side by side. Eriks Hale also gives you the opportunity of a very special walk if you follow the isthmus to its end; this trip will take you past all of the beautiful beach huts, and at the new breakwater into the Baltic at the tip of the isthmus, it turns 90 degrees and you can
continue along the outside of the great pier to Kalkovnen on Frederiksøen. Take a break here close to the entry of the harbour and enjoy your packed lunch with the view of Marstal – before you continue your walk, for you will have to take the beautiful trip the same way back. Unless you are lucky to hail a passing boat and get a lift, as there is only a distance of 50m between Frederiksøen and the piers on the other side. A walk out of the ordinary of approx. 4km.
ALONG THE COAST From Ærøskøbing and way out past Skovby, the most delicate and undisturbed beaches wind. Towards the unique Archipelago you will find both sandy and pebbled beaches. Here are shallow stretches as well as deep water. Therefore anglers will often go for these stretches. On the south coast where the Baltic rolls in, you will find sandy beaches as well beaches with pretty rocks and pebbles shaped by the sea. At the stretch between Voderup Klint and Risemark Strand you will find the characteristic rocks with holes, known as ’cows’, and here you may touch gold in the form of amber. You can enjoy a swim all along Ærø
– also on the pebbled beaches of the south coast, but don't forget bathing shoes.
RISEMARK CLOTHES FREE BEACH Naturists are welcome on Ærø. Risemark Beach is an outstanding naturist beach in wonderful nature. Risemark Strand was officially inaugurated as a naturist beach in 2014, and during Whitsun of that year, the Danish Naturist Society held its annu-
al Whitsun gathering on Ærø, when many people visited the beach which was well recommended by the many participants. In principle, all beaches in Denmark are free clothes beaches; however the location of the Risemark beach, its characteristics and accessibility all mean that many naturists enjoy visiting it. There is good parking at the beach. Part of
Risemark beach is clearly marked with the sign FKK/Naturist Beach so as a naturist you can feel quite comfortable to use the beach in the nude. On Ærø you can take a dip all year round, and the Ærø Winter Swimmers take to the sea from the BP House on Ærøskøbing Harbour every morning at 8 during the season which is from 1 September to 1 May. Everybody is welcome.
HISTORY OF THE BEACH HUTS The first private beach huts on Ærø popped up in the early 1920's. They were erected by locals for private use at Vesterstrand by Ærøskøbing and on Eriks Hale by Marstal. The first beach huts were a very diverse collection. Some were mere shacks, just big enough for changing clothes, whereas others looked like cottages. They were all houses for pleasure and leisure – somewhat like allotment sheds which they resemble in terms of style. The very first huts were erected at the end of a wooden pier, but gradually the huts were positioned along the top of the beach. No rules regulated the constructions and no requirements were made of positioning, design or colouring, still some unwritten codes must have a pplied that needed to be observed in consideration of their location.
As the beach huts spread out, some of the rather simple sheds disappeared and many were provided with a small veranda. The majority of the beach huts were erected on the beach which is a public beach. There was some controversy over the legality of the beach huts in the early 1960s, where some owners had major difficulties with the renewal of their lease contracts. The nature conservancy board was involved but even as early as that, the huts had gained such a great place in people's hearts that removing them was not an option. The beach hut case went on for nearly two decades and in the meantime attempts were made to solve the conflict with various ideas.
ous lists of cultural heritage worthy of preservation. The land under the beach huts is on permanent leases. And the provisions are rigorous: No annexes, no additions and no installation of electricity or running water. Everything must remain as it was. Further reading on the beach huts and their story can be found in Danish, in the book »Badehusene – en fortælling om badelivet i Ærøskøbing«, also available from the Tourist Office, or join one of the guided tours – please see the calendar of events on www.visitaeroe.com.

The thatched red beach hut at Eriks Hale is the most photographed hut on Ærø. It was completed on 19 August 1931 and its first owner was the draper Chr. Christensen and his wife Valborg. When time permitted, the couple went from Marstal out to Eriks Hale, often together with their two children or with colleagues or business relations.

path past Ommel Church and finishes in the mariners’ town of Marstal. At the tourist office you can buy a more detailed booklet about the entire Archipelago Trail.
COASTAL TRAIL Along the south side of Ærø near the coast is the »Coastal Trail«, its 30km mainly follows bicycle route 91. From the trail you can take a trip to the coast and to Voderup Klint
VITSØ AND SØBYGAARD Starting at Loddenbjerg plantation just outside Søby a splendid walking path runs through the reclaimed area of Vitsø and further on to Duke Hans’ hunting lodge, Søbygaard, with the impressive ramparts. In spring you can enjoy the many greylags and other birds in the reclaimed area, go for
a walk down to the beach and enjoy the view across the Baltic Sea to Als and Germany.
THE TRAIL AT GRÅSTEN NOR The signposted walking route is 8km long and takes the rambler through the largest connected meadow area in the Funen area. Gråsten Nor is a reclaimed sea area now providing the basis for a varied and exciting nature. In spring, this is where you will find the protected may orchids, more than 75,000 plants, as well as agile frog and green frog and here are hundreds of nesting birds. Both in spring and in the autumn the cove is an important resting place for numerous migrating birds.
THE TRAIL AT GRAVENDAL The Gravendal trail starts at the same place as the Gråsten Nor trail. The trail offers adventures of both nature and history. It takes the rambler along the high hills of the Vejsnæs coast, past the church ruins of Skt.
Albert and up to the ancient monument on Lindsbjerg which offers great views over the Marstal Bay to the island of Langeland. The trail passes one of the most distinctive estates on Ærø, Gravendal, which was partitio-
ned from the ducal Graasten. At Gravendal, you can also visit Duke Christian's Lounge. Pick up a folder on ’The Trail at Gråsten Nor’ and ’The Trail at Gravendal’ at the tourist office.

TIME TO QUIETUDE AND
SELF-INDULGENCE These days, many people have a busy everyday life - often with little time to stop and take a deep breath. Therefore it will be like balm to your soul to take a trip to Ærø, where many feel calm settling over them right from the start of the ferry crossing. Here on Ærø the tempo is different, it's what many people often say, and they are probably right – there is always time for a chat and to invite the neighbours in for a cup of coffee. The absence of the consumption race and the ensuing traffic allows plenty of time and freedom to enjoy for the profit of both islanders and tourists. Here you will find calm and quiet to make you feel good deep down inside. On Ærø, sea and nature is all over the place. Here you can recharge your batteries with lovely walks in the open nature, take a quiet time of meditation on the beach or a swim in the waves. In winter you can join the Ærø winter swimmers, and it is also possible to go to a sauna and a wilderness
bath - regardless of the time of year, Ærø is an obvious site for recreation. Body and soul is one, as they say, and if you are interested in personal development you will be able to combine your holidays with exciting treatments of your body and soul. The island has many skilled practi-
tioners and therapists offering everything from craniosacral therapy, physiotherapy and massage to coaching and personal development. Yoga is also popular and in the summertime, beach yoga is regularly offered at the water's edge.

OUT INTO NATURE AND ACTIVE HOLIDAYS
GOLF ON ÆRØ The golf course has a unique location at the Skjoldnæs Lighthouse, surrounded by the sea on three sides. You have sea views from each and every green, which make the course the only one of its kind in Denmark. A seaside course which is otherwise found only in Scotland or Ireland. The views are unique and you will often have to stop and be happy about the extraordinary oppor tunity to play golf here. Particularly in summer, there are myriads of yachts in the Baltic and the South-of-Funen Archipelago on their route round the Skjoldnæs Lighthouse; this makes most golfers breathless. The yachts are often so close to the course that you 2 6 > ÆRØ GUIDE 2020
can hear people talking on board when the weather is calm. A round on the course is a very special experience that you ought to try, and which very many guest players come back to again and again. The front 9 holes are on the southern side of Ærø, and the back 9 holes are behind the Skjoldnæs Lighthouse on the northern side of the island. There are many challenges both out and back, particularly when it is windy, but the course is not physically demanding and is manageable for the regular golfer. The pleasure of playing golf on Ærø starts early during the beautiful trip to the Skjoldnæs Lighthouse which stands as a landmark for the course. The Ærø Golf club
house is set in the charming old residence of the lighthouse manager. The course is open every day from sunrise to sunset. Please visit www.aeroegolf.dk.
ANGLING Ærø offers 80km of widely varying coast line with fine opportunities for angling for sea trout, cod, garfish, mackerel, grey mullet and flatfish. On Ærø, you can angle from everywhere – and regardless of the weather, you will find a good angling spot with fine conditions within 15-20 minutes. Particularly, fly fishing is enjoyable on an island, because you can always find a spot with favourable winds. The island offers
beautiful and varying nature with plenty of room for the angler – and not least many different kinds of fishing spots ranging from open coast to bays, coves, points and inlets. It is difficult to single out one place on Ærø, as it is possible to angle most of the year from all along the coasts. For example, the south-western part of Ærø is in fact one long angling spot. The south coast to the Baltic is characterised by deeper water, small points and many gravel bars. Favourite months are in spring and autumn. The north side to the Archipelago is rather more shallow, and here angling is generally fine over winter. In the inlet Kløven you may be lucky to find a true sea trout eldorado during December-February. When water temperatures reach 7-8˚C, you may catch sea trout from all spots, both in the inlet and from the open coastline. All over the island are fine access roads to the coast and the angling spots. Sea trout angling during summer is best during the light evenings, and particularly in the calm, white nights, angling on Ærø is a great experience. Ærø's north-westerly point around Skjoldnæs Lighthouse, where the water is deep and the current strong, is a fine summer spot. During the warm months of summer, particularly garfish is found along Danish coasts, and this is an entertaining fighter that takes largely any bait – therefore this is also a fine season for bringing the children along on a fishing trip as chances for a catch are great. Garfish is a fine fish to cook, at that. Angling for flatfish is popular. It is relaxing and cosy, and the whole family can join. Method and bait is simple; leger and worm, and you can catch plaice, dab and flounder all year round. Eating quality is best in late summer and autumn. The flatfish are often

in the sand at the edge of seagrass and reefs that are clearly seen from the shore as dark patches. Each year since 1979, Ærø Sportsfiskerfor ening has put out one- and two-year-old sea trout fry directly from the coast. These fish have since contributed to the very fine coast angling for sea trout that Ærø is known for. The club also holds an annual fishing competition in the autumn with fine prizes where anglers from near and far meet for a sea trout weekend on Ærø. When fishing on Ærø you can find accommodation with good facilities such as a place for cleaning, additional freezer space, drying room for gear and clothes. At the tourist office you can buy the book »117 fine Funen fishing spots«, and the statutory fishing licence – which is also available at www.fisketegn.dk. Do visit the tourist office and get the latest news on fishing on the island.
If there is one single thing that both visitors and locals fully enjoy, it is the free buses on Ærø. Basically, the bus leaves once every hour, through beautiful landscapes and idyllic villages. From the bus stop at the harbour in Ærøskøbing it will take approx. 25 min. to go to Marstal or Søby. The bus route goes from Ærøskøbing to Marstal through the villages Lille Rise and Store Rise. Another route leaves Ærøskøbing to Søby, stopping at Stokkeby Landevej, Olde Mølle – and through the villages of Tranderup, Vindeballe, Bregninge, Leby, and Skovby. It is also possible to take the bus on the Marstal-Ommel-Kragnæs-stretch on
UNDERWATER HUNTING Ærø also offers grand experiences under the surface of the sea. It requires nothing but a pair of goggles for you to see for yourselves, and Ærø boasts an extraordinarily beautiful underwater world with a rich wildlife in the clear waters around the island. Underwater hunting has become increasingly popular in Denmark, and Ærø really offers impressive conditions with good visibility and varying seabed conditions. In the waters around Ærø you may get quite close to flatfish, cod, sea trout, garfish and grey mullet. Indeed, the grey mullet is fun to hunt with a harpoon. This is a summer visitor which passes by the Danish coasts from May to October. From the clifftops and in calm weather you can often see the mullets coming quite close to the beach in great shoals. You can even feed them with bread (an effective >>
Tuesdays and Fridays (two departures a day). The free bus gives you the opportunity to jump on and off the bus as you wish – and this applies to your entire stay on Ærø. This arrangement also means that when planning a walk or a bike-ride you can adapt your start and finish to the bus route. Yes, indeed. You can take your bike on the bus, as long as there is room for it. Bus stops where bikes may be taken along, are marked in the schedule. There are many options and with the buses of Ærø you only have to concentrate on enjoying the ride. See the schedule at www.aeroe-ferry.dk or www.jesperbus.dk.

bait if you fish with a rod). It is a shy fish, but when you succeed in luring it, it's worth all your troubles. Not to mention that the grey mullet is a fine eatable fish. So, to those of you with a bent towards angling or underwater hunting we dare say that Ærø is second to none!

kayak enthusiasts of the Archipelago and completes the basic idea of Nature Tourism with the project: Encourage access and nearness to sea and coast.
WINDSURFING AND KITESURFING All year round, Ærø offers outstanding opportunities for windsurfers, whether you are a beginner or a seasoned surfer. A suit able surfing spot is never far. Kitesurfers will find good conditions both in Det Lille Hav (The Little Sea) at Eriks Hale in Marstal, in the inlet between Nevre and Ommelshoved, and at Uhrehoved in Ærøskøbing.
SEA KAYAKING Sea kayaking in the South-of-Funen Archi pelago is quite a unique experience. Here you will find one of Denmark's most attractive waters, where the many islands and islets invite you to sea kayak adventures. On Wednesdays in July, Marstal Kayak Club arranges the so-called Kayak Pen. Please see www.marstalkajakklub.dk or the calendar of events. At www.kajakudlejningen.dk you can book sea kayaks, delivered where you like on the island. A fine kayak house has been con-

MUSEUMS ON ÆRØ ÆRØ MUSEUM In 2019, Ærø's culture-historic museum reopened with a new permanent exhibition:- »Ærø – our island«, which presents narratives and objects about life on Ærø over centuries. In a simple and manageable manner, visitors are guided on a journey back in time, from today's life as an Ærø islander to the old Ærø peasant society. Along the way on this journey, a series of central themes in the island history is presented, ranging from the wedding tourism of today to Ærø as part of the Duchy of Schleswig prior to the Dybbøl defeat of 1864. Here you can meet the lives lived by big and small, dressy peasants of the 1800s, the German-American bridal couple, merchant Lauritz Kock, and deaf-mute Philip in Ærøskøbing. Also Bismarck, the German Iron Chancellor, is depicted. At the exhibi-

tion you will have the answer to what he has got to do with Ærø, just as you will learn why the islanders boil eggs on the beaches on Holy Saturday and the story behind the island's two local flags. A visit to the museum garden anno 1920 will give you an idea of the green and luxuriant Ærøskøbing which is otherwise hidden to the world behind the joined facades. The exhibition has acquired great acknowledgement among the visitors for its stories and its atmosphere, and you yourself may become part of the narrative by a selfie in the poetical rooms with the beautiful exhibition design.
HAMMERICH'S HOUSE The red house on the corner of Brogade and Gyden is one of Ærøskøbing's well preserved 18th century half-timbered houses. The house has conserved the ori-
ginal interior design with narrow staircases and an old fireplace. During the Great War, sculptor Gunnar Hammerich (1893-1977) bought the house and furnished it with an impressive collection of antiques, including 3,000 Dutch tiles, Kellinghusen faiences and other domestic utensils dating from the 1600's-1800's from South Jutland and the South-of-Funen Archipelago. For many years, Gunnar Hammerich was an ardent advocate for the environment worthy of preservation in Ærøskøbing. He was a central figure in Ærøskøbing's new identity that went from being an active skipper's town to becoming a fairy-tale town with a rich building culture and many listed buildings. In 2002, this led to the award to Ærøskøbing of the distinguished Europa Nostra Prize. Hammerich's House is a monument of the town's development in the twentieth century.
churches. In his last 25 years, HavsteenMikkelsen lived at Øster Bregningemark, not far from Søbygaard. During the summer period a series of classical music concerts are presented with artists from Denmark and abroad. The Manor stands right next to Middle Age castle mounds dating back to the 1100s. From the top of the mounds are beautiful views towards Vitsø and the island of Als. There is a public path around Vitsø and there are parking lots close to Søbygaard.

THE RESTORATION OF SØBYGAARD
His artistic activities appear from several memorials across the island.
SØBYGAARD The manor was built by Duke Hans the Younger (1545-1622) when he inherited large areas of Ærø from his mother, Dowager Queen Dorothea. The main building and the farm buildings are located on two artificial islands boarded with boulders into impressive stone walls. You cross the moat to the main building by the reconstructed drawbridge. History emanates from this spot that bears
witness to Ærø's past under the Duchy of Schleswig up until 1749. In these beautiful and idyllic surroundings you are also welcome to enjoy your packed lunch. There is room for children to play and during the summer there is a wide range of activities for children and adults. One of such activities is the activity centre called "Kiss the Frog". During the summer months there are alternating exhibitions in the Castle and in the barn. The concert hall is decorated with the artist Sven Havsteen-Mikkelsen's models of glass mosaics that hang in various Nordic
The ugly duckling has grown into a beautiful swan. After 25 years' restoration work the past glories are again distinguished at the only remaining manor of four that Ærø had in the 17th century. The buildings have been restored, water again fills the moat and a reconstruction of the original drawbridge has been completed. In 2015, Søbygaard got a lake-source heating system which now heats the buildings. Søbygaard forms the framework for a rich animal life and not least the croaking of the frogs. In the area behind the barn an open air stage and a nature playground have been erected. This is also the stage for the traditional and merry Ærø festival plays.

red years ago. The riveted steel ferry, the Angelo ex S/S Svendborgsund from 1907 is on the building berth. The renovation, which is part of the exhibition, is up and running. The aim is that the S/S Svendborgsund will be renovated and restored to appear as she did a hundred years ago at the time when the S/S Svendborgsund plied the waters between Marstal, Rudkøbing and Strynø. Both experiences and exhibitions at Det Gamle Værft are constantly evolving and changing. Restoration jobs are currently ongoing. Sometimes we take on old iron constructions for buildings, or over 100-year-old
The bottle and model ship collection has been exhibited in the former poorhouse in Ærøskøbing since 1943. The collection holds more than 100-year old bottle ships and is the oldest collection of its kind in the world. Flaske-Peter (1873-1960) managed to build more than 1700 bottle ships and 50 big model ships. Around 500 ships can be seen in the collection as well as the memorial cross of his own making with seven bottle ships built into the cross – one for each of the seven seas. The reacquired America Collection with the famous diving bottle is presented in a different and exciting exhibition.
MARSTAL MARITIME MUSEUM When you board the Marstal Maritime Museum, you will get your »old salt« shot in your arm for you stay on Ærø! You arrive at the museum where you board a real ship, i.e. over the deck which takes you on board the jagt-schooner Haabet with bulwark, capstan, mast, rig, hatches and deckhouse.
In the dinghy port of the museum courtyard children and childlike souls can climb the mast, enter small boats or take on a long voyage with the good ship S/S Martha - and during school holidays you may build your own little ship. Indoors you will find big gear from the ships such as cabins and deckhouses, the galley from the schooner Bonavista and the original wheelhouse from M/S Dora. Here you may go down in the cabins where swell and engine noises will carry you away at sea. You can also sit down as a first-class passenger in a deck saloon that once stood on the steam ferry Bagenkop. The museum presents more than 300 ship's models and panoramas with examples from the first types of sailing ships up to coasters and ferries of our time. A big harbour panorama of Marstal Harbour in 1925 will give you an impression of a lay-up harbour of the time with the ships decommissioned for the winter. You will find a sea of wondrous curiosities brought back by mariners from the Seven Seas, for instance a shrunken head that also appears in Carsten Jensen's book »We, The Drowned« and see sailors' wives in old costumes and complete living room environments when you walk down a »snorre«—one of the small, narrow paths that are so characteristic of Marstal.
J.E.C. RASMUSSEN, MARINE AND GREENLAND PAINTER
J. E. C. Rasmussen Marine and Greenland Painter The Museum has an ever growing collection of one of Denmark's big Golden-Age painters, J. E. C. Rasmussen, who was born in Ærøskøbing in 1841 and graduated as a painter from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen. Later on he set tled in Marstal, and from here he travelled around in Europa - and rather more odd for those days - to Greenland, where he stayed from 1870-71. Here he made quite a number of preliminary works and outlines which
were later on used for paintings of women's boats, grouse hunters, and kayaks in the impressive Greenland nature and the carrying home of a dead sealer. Rasmussen was first to depict the lives of Greenlanders, and among his major works are Natives Dancing the Tag Dance from 1872 and Young Sealer in Kayak in Snow Drift from 1886, a painting which was recently added to the collection, which is currently expanded through donations. The painter perished in the North Atlantic Ocean on his way home to Marstal from Greenland in 1893, presumably he jum- >>

ERIKSEN¨S SITE
Lorens Hansen's model ship collection Sailor and shooing smith Lorens Hansen was a model builder of supreme skill. 42 results of his efforts can be seen in the exhibitions from skiffs, over pleasure yachts to the five-mast bark and training vessel KØBENHAVN, which perished without a trace in 1928 with a crew of 60 young trainees. The Dannebrog, the Danish Royal Yacht, is certainly also worth mentioning as well as the panoramic model of H. C. Christensen's Shipyard around the year 1900. This is the place where you may find yourself in quite a different time from ours - for better or worse!
The breakwater and Eriksen's Site At the easternmost coastline of Ærø is a natural harbour with access to the Baltic and the Archipelago, protected towards the south by Eriks Hale (Erik's Tail) and to the east by the impressive and one-kilometrelong pier. The natural harbour has provided living conditions for fishermen and seamen since the dawn of time, and it is the basis for the origin and the growth of Marstal.
The harbour breakwater was built by the town's seamen, as a consequence of the lacking initiative by the authorities, one winter after the other under the motto UNITY MAKES STRENGTH which are the words on the monument for the families of the breakwater-builders. In the lee behind the boulder breakwater, harbour areas with shipbuilding sites were established. One of these was Eriksen's Site with Eriksen's Shipyard. This is where Marstal Maritime Museum has moved in. Eriksen's Site is one of the breeding grounds
for wooden-shipbuilding with origins in the golden age of Danish shipping with sailing vessels. The site is a pleasant green breathing space with barbecue areas and tables/benches. At certain times, you are welcome to visit the yard hall and engine shed where engines, sometimes even a hotbulb engine, will be started. Here, Samka, the museum coaster, is alongside from time to time. On the site is a partly erected framed schooner as a sculpture of the extensive shipyard activities that have marked the town. Welcome on board Danish seafaring!

SUSTAINABLE ENERGY ISLAND In 2009, Ærø Municipality adopted the objective that by 2025 the island must be self-sufficient with sustainable energy and be CO2 neutral. In 2018, the municipality's green ambitions were further increased as the aim to become a fossil fuel free island by 2030 was adopted. Today the island has now reached a point where it is consider ed one of the leading renewable-energy islands.
DISTRICT HEATING BASED ON SUN AND BIOMASS The island has just under 7 square metres of sun collectors per inhabitant to cover part of the district heating consumption. This is probably a world record. The remainder of district hearing comes from CO2 free BIOMASS (wood and straw). Ærø has three district heating plants; one in Marstal, one in Ærøskøbing and one in Rise. Marstal District Heating's solar heating plant is the largest in the island and even among the largest in Denmark with a total solar panel area of 33,365 square metres. The solar heating plant covers approx. 55 per cent of the district heating requirement in Marstal, Ommel and Græsvænge. This is possible, because in summer the sun heats up the water in three hot-water storages that are used once the heating season starts in the autumn. The hot-water storages include a pit heat storage of 75,000m3. Where the heating requirement cannot not be covered by the sun, a 4 MW wood chip boiler and a 1.5 MW CO2 heat pump will supplement the requirement.
SELF-SUFFICIENT WITH WIND POWER Since the 1980s, wind turbines have had a central place in the utilisation of renew able energy sources on Ærø. As early as 1985, the then biggest wind turbine park in Denmark was established on Ærø where 11 turbines of 55 kW each were erected at Risemark. These turbines along with six older turbines were taken down in 2002, when they were replaced by three big 2 MW turbines. In 2011, three additional turbines each of 2 MW were erected, and today the
six big wind turbines produce more power on an annual basis than what is used on Ærø. It is a distinguishing feature of the Ærø wind turbines that they are owned and operated by local wind turbine guilds. The turbines are owned by around 650 local shareholders, which means that more than 10 per cent of the island's population are co-owners. To supplement the wind power, surveys are ongoing for setting up solar parks on Ærø.
ALL-ELECTRIC FERRY In mid-August of 2019, the all-electric ferry, Ellen, was inaugurated on the service between Søby and Fynshav on Als. The modern and innovative battery ferry is a world-class ground-breaking invention which is partly developed and built on Ærø. The ferry is 100% powered by batteries with a capacity of 4.3 MWh and the Ellen will cover a distance of up to 22 nautical miles between each re-charge, which is seven times as far as any existing battery ferry. Follow the pioneering project at www.e-ferryproject.eu
NEW IDEAS EMERGE AT THE ENERGY LAB Despite a progressive green changeover on Ærø, there are still crucial activities ahead to reach the 2025 and 2030 goals. New innovative ideas are born at Ærø EnergyLab in Marstal. Here, the sustainable energy activities of the municipality are gathered
under the same roof. The future initiatives from the energy lab are particularly centred around energy storage and transportation. As mentioned above, the island's six wind turbines produce more power than what is consumed on Ærø. As a matter of fact, the average annual output of the turbines constitutes 120-140% of the island's power consumption. Endeavours are therefore made to find sustainable ways of storing excess power for local use, also at times of no wind. Moreover, Ærø has become a demonstration area for a new intelligent charging technology which may particularly assist large power consumers (E-cars, E-ferries, industry, etc.) in consuming power at the right moments. At the same time, work is ongoing to improve the charging facilities for E-cars on the island, while events are set up for citizens where they will learn about various types of E-cars and the economics of acquiring such a car. At Ærø EnergyLab they wish to spread the messages and the experience from the island's green transition, and various tours and courses are offered to schools, universities, delegations from the whole world, energy tourists and many more. If you are interested in hearing more about the possibilities, please contact: Ærø EnergyLab, energylab@aeroekommune.dk and follow us on Facebook: »Den bæredygtige energiØ Ærø« (= Ærø, the sustainable energy island). CHURCHES ON ÆRØ
Ærø has seven churches, each with its own characteristics. The maritime element is clearly seen in several of them - for instance, Marstal Church has as many as seven votive ships. Rise Church is Ærø’s oldest church with a history dating back to the 12th century. Marstal Church stands out with its carillon which chimes every day at 9am, noon and 3pm and in the summer also at 5pm. In Bregninge Church the triptych is an attraction: it dates back to around 1530, right before the Reformation, and was made by Claus Berg at his workshop in Odense. The old frescos have been uncovered in some of the churches, and here you are suddenly face to face with church art and religious apprehension of bygone ages. A distinctive feature of the churches in Rise, Tranderup and Bregninge is the circular churchyards. Further reading (in Danish) at www.ærøkirkeliv.dk. You can also have a brochure on the churches at the Tourist Office.

THE WEDDING ISLAND
Romance is flourishing on Ærø! Each year, more than 2000 couples say »I do« in the beautiful surroundings on Ærø. The nature, the romantic idyll and the charm of the island make it an obvious place for a wedding and the registrars on Ærø are willing to leave the town hall to wed couples onshore, offshore and even in the air. Moreover, Ærø Municipality may even be the most flexible municipality when it comes to wedding dates: The Municipality offers more than 200 possible dates a year for the many couples who dream of getting married on Ærø. The many weddings contribute to creating quite a unique ambience on the island. The chance of meeting newly and slightly giddy couples in the streets of Ærø is great, and it is clearly visible on the faces of passers-by that their joy is infectious. The islanders are proud that Ærø can attract so many happy bridal couples year after year, and among small local busi nesses,
who in one way or the other are involved in the many weddings, a certain pride and honour is felt for being allowed to contribute. All flowers are carefully selected and all cakes gently decorated. The story about Ærø, the Wedding Island, is known the world over and has been told in several international media. In 2019 alone, Frenchmen, Germans, and Chinese could read about Ærø, the Wedding Island, in their local media. And in 2015, Danish television presented a series called »Business on the Wedding Island« about the hard-working wedding organisers. The large, international awareness and the good reputation of the island is one of the reasons why a large part of the couples are from abroad, but also Danish couples know the way to Ærø. Several couples have two different nationalities and many LBGTcouples have taken the opportunity to get married on Ærø. Some couples arrive on
their own, others bring along their wedding party and combine their wedding reception with their holiday on the island. For this is the flexibility which the Wedding Island of Ærø offers: The options are of both the very intimate and private wedding for bride and groom only and the big hullaballoo wedding where family and friends from near and far crowd together on Ærø to participate in the wedding party. The many wedding couples are in capable hands with our professional and dedicated wedding organisers who are ready to assist the couples with everything from paper work to the boutonnière. They make dreams come true and the many happy wedding couples (and their photos) bear witness to this again and again. Should you have a dream of getting married on Ærø, visit out site at visitaeroe.com and read about your possibilities for a dreamcome-true wedding on Ærø, the Wedding Island. ÆRØ GUIDE 2020 > 3 7
ROOM FOR CREATIVE
EXPANSION VITSØ ART SCHOOL Ærø has an ability to attract creative people. Creativity is reflected in a strong culture of entrepreneurship and many different galleries and show rooms with everything from photographic art, handicrafts and jewellery to crafts of glass, sculptures and installations. You only have to look at the signs in the streets and the beautiful colours of many of the houses — it all bears witness to a high level of aesthetic sense. Ærø Arts College is the centre of modern art life and a lighthouse among arts colleges. Here are all-year courses, and each summer the works of the students may be seen on the Søby harbour. During the past couple of years, the culture festival, Ærø Dog Days, has also contributed towards placing Ærø on the map as an island where things happen on the young and rather more experimental art stage. The island has two active art/culture societies: Ærø Art Society and Marstal Harbour Culture Society, a large art hall, galleries and numerous residing artists who willingly open their doors to curious visitors. There's plenty of room in our island: room to unfold and to dare trying something different, and nature is an inexhaustible source of inspiration to many as here you may follow the shifting seasons in a very special way. 3 8 > ÆRØ GUIDE 2020

CROSS SECTION - ART BIENNAL ON ÆRØ 60 artists and arts students return and participate in the sculpture exhibition TVÆRSNIT (CROSS SECTION) as part of the art biennal SSS2020 during the period 1 June to 1 September. The exhibition will show in Bregninge, Søby and Ærøskøbing on Ærø and in Svendborg on Funen. This will be the sixth time the biennal is held and as always it is organised in a cooperation between three groups who are not otherwise involved in cross-sectional networks: professionals, students, and folk-high-school participants. Thematically the focus point is on the genre of sculpture intended as an expanded form and unfolded in an aesthetic dialogue with locality and tradition.
All of the 80 participants - professionals as well as students - have some time in the past 30 years participated in an annual course at the College of Arts on Ærø. Here, things have fallen into place and the first paces towards a professional career in the arts have been taken. Today, several of the artists reside outside Denmark. Behind the biennal of the year are the graphic artists Ole Hartvig Nielsen, Heine Kjærgaard Klausen, Rasmus Søndergaard Johannsen and Susan Hinnum. One of the organisers has been along all the way as an instructor at the College of Arts on Ærø, two have been participants at the College and the last one is the present head of the College.

A MECCA OF GOOD TASTE
EXPERIENCES
It may be the clean and clear air that makes scents and tastes appear so obvious on Ærø. You will find a Mecca of good sensory exper iences. You will be taken back to times when you taste an old-fashioned candy or sniff old genuine soap. Pleasure of food and local quality produce are in high esteem on Ærø. Scattered over the island you will find farms, conventional as well as organic, and both big and small food manufacturers who are all preoccupied with producing quality products. On the island are several eateries that use local produce for their menus – don't hesitate to ask for the history behind your meal. On Ærø we produce meat of a very high qua lity which you can taste either at the local restaurants – or take home as cuts and irre sistible smoked goods. Or how would you like to select your future steak directly from the field? Ærø also offers a profusion of new-spun honey, syrup and juices of all kinds, mar4 0 > ÆRØ GUIDE 2020
malades, wine, rapeseed oil, teas, herbal and spiced salt, creams and soaps, candies and filled chocolates. When you move about on the island you will find several road-side stalls with fresh eggs and fruit and vegetables along with plenty of other good things. On the harbour in Marstal, several fishermen will take orders and sell fresh fish directly from their boats. In the village of Rise you will find the island brewery, Ærø Bryggeri, which offers a wide range of good beer, including organic beer. During the summer time the brewery offers tours and beer tasting several times every week. Neighbouring Ærø Bryggeri is Ærø Cigar. A small tobacco plantation which each year produces hand-rolled Ærø cigars. Here you have the opportunity of following the tobacco road from seeds to complete, rolled cigars, for the entire process is made more or less by hand in Store Rise.
In 2016, Ærø Whisky Destillery & Visitor's Centre opened in the yard of the old mer chant's house at the Town Square in Ærøs købing. Ærø Whisky is genuinely a local prod uct where each and every bottle can be traced to the specific field on the island that supplied the barley malt. The oak barrels, manufactured of Ærø oak by joiners in Søby, are used at first to store mead made of Ærø honey in order to provide the finished whisky with a slightly sweet flavour. You may spoil your sweet tooth by visiting Nordic Chocolate – Fruens Vilje Chocolaterie that makes candies, lollipops, chocolate mallows, and delicious chocolates filled with Aeroe fruit and many other treats. Sæberiet in Søby produces the most wonderful soaps and spiced salts with flowers and herbs from the large and beautiful garden that is open to visitors. During the summer time, children may come and make their own soap figures.
Vitsøhus, the Ornamented Farm of the future, with its sloping terrain stands directly on picturesque Vitsø. Since 2012, this area has grown into Denmark's probably most unique productive Garden of Eden according to the principles of Permaculture. Here, in addition to a high biodiversity of medicinal herbs and spices, an historic rose garden, an edible forest garden, and rare and old animal breeds, nature stands out. Visitors are offered an informa-
tive Permacultural-audio-tour in three languages along the winding paths. In May and July you can hear about natural beekeeping at the manor Søbygaard. If you are a city person and seek the contrast to the usual hustle and bustle, the bay called Borgnæsbugten may take you by surprise in the happiest way. This is a place where you will be embraced by nature, by animals and by light reflected by the sea at the big sandy beach in the bay. In the fields, the sheep are grazing – not knowing that they are suppliers of the most delicious Ærø wool for yarns of all grey colours; yarns that you may buy also from Fie’s Strik in Leby. In the farm shop Blåbær in Ærøskøbing, you will also find skins from the shop's own sheep. Take the opportunity of saying hello to the animals and have a cup of coffee in the garden while the children pat the cute cuddly pigs. Christmas is a lovely time for gathering the entire family, and during the Christmas holidays families and friends are able to fully enjoy their time together. Rent a cottage close to nature with plenty of space for grand parents and friends. Or book a charming room at one of the island's many authentic accommodations and let twosomeness flourish hand in hand in the Christmas streets of Ærø. Christmas on Ærø is children with rosy cheeks and adults in infectious Christmas spirit, all well hidden behind woollen caps and mittens. Christmas on Ærø is a glimpse of a festive Christmas tree through frosty windows, decorated stone doorsteps, and the heat from candles in the window sills. Christmas on Ærø is the aroma of homemade Danish doughnuts the Ærø-way with the traditional prune in the middle. Yuletide on Ærø oozes hygge and old tradition. A time at a slow tempo and full of Christmas activities. The whole island offers numerous Christmas markets full
of hand knits, local taste sensations and obvious gift ideas. In Marstal, Father Christmas and his family arrive by sea on board the good ship Samka, and at the ensuing lightning of the Christmas tree you can sense the joy of anticipation among young and old. ”Local Friday” in Ærøskøbing, the Ærø version of ”Black Friday”, offers good bargains and hygge, when the town darkens and trading takes place under the light of candles. On 23rd December in Søby, you can see the very popular Parade of the Elves. The parade fills the streets of Søby with big and small elves who escort Father Christmas and his post van. It all ends with goody bags, hot drinks and happy togetherness. Indeed, on Ærø we go all out at Christmas. Come and savour the atmosphere on Denmark's Christmas Island.

MOVE TO WONDERFUL ÆRØ Are you dreaming about island living? On Ærø, we have room - also for you. Island living begins on the ferry. The crossing is something quite unique. In fact, you are sailing in the unique Danish archipelago - sometimes on a glassy sea, at other times on dancing waves. Passing big or small islands arriving in charming towns. On Ærø, we often jokingly say that we are going on "a trip to the real world", when the trip is to the mainland. Some take the commuter trip every day to and from work, others travel in groups - eager to see which adventures are ahead. Others again relax and enjoy the views from the quiet compartment. On the crossing back to Ærø it feels like heaving a collective sigh of relief. Now we are almost at home.
Even though Ærø is a modern island with most of what a modern islander may require, such as lightning-fast optical fibre broadband, exciting work places, frequent ferry departures, good infrastructure, hospital, group medical practices, dentists, schools and kindergartens, nursery and day-care, care homes, shops, restaurants, cinema, sports halls, free buses for everyone, fitness centres, and much more, then life here feels different: We have a fellowship about this! We meet, smile at one another on the street, have a chat over the deli counter in the supermarket, and we lift an index finger from the steering wheel to greet passing cars. What many people are looking for in island living is the wish to be part of something - a town, an association, a group - where you

The Ærø Day is the display window of island associations and is held each year in either Søby, Marstal or Ærøskøbing. In 2020, we look forward to seeing you on 13 June at Søby Harbour between 11am and 4pm, where the Ærø Day will celebrate its 10th anniversary.

have value and join a committing fellowship. There are areas where Ærø does this not just well, but really well: For instance, we have the best staffing in Denmark in the area of child minding which means that parents may safely wave good-buy to their
kids in the morning - this provides for a good child life, a good family life, and not least good conditions for our child minders. Perhaps your aim of becoming an islander is the prospect of settling for shorter working days. Maybe your aim is to air the budding
Island living is a different way of living life and our motto says it all: Ærø is everything amidst water. Water is present everywhere. Life gets into perspective and enables us to look out into the world and at the same time focus on the good island life. ÆRØ, ISLAND OF EDUCATION Ærø is a lovely holiday island, but most certainly also an island of education with places of study keeping abreast of the best on the mainland. Here, children, young people, and adults are thriving. The island's state school with around 400 children and youngsters has forms from 0 to 10. It is centrally located in Marstal close to the great hall, to day care and to public transportation. In addition to its interesting activities, the school also has an active youth and music school. In the heart of Ærøskøbing is the Ærø Independent School with around 100 children and youths. In addition to education and culture, project-based learning and cooperation across classes are given high priority.
Marstal Maritime Academy is a leading Danish nautical training institute in relation to maritime training and education for the Danish merchant fleet and the Academy specialises in supplementary training courses and e-learning in maritime subjects. Neighbouring the Maritime Academy is VUC, the adult education centre offer ing two high-school courses for young people, a two-year HF (Higher Preparatory Examination) in common subjects and the three-year "Blue HF" in cooperation with the Maritime Academy. In addition, 9th to 10th form education is offered for adults and HF-single subjects. The students are offered a school-home scheme and are associated with a "school mum" who takes good care of the youngsters who may have left home for the first time.
In the middle of the island in the village of Tranderup is Ærø Efterskole, a vocational continuation school for young people with learning difficulties. Here, the students may graduate with a school leaving certificate in Danish and maths as well as test a range of exciting and practical workshops. Overlooking the beautiful Vitsø near Søby is the esteemed ’Ærø Arts College', which is a folk high school focusing on contemporary art. In addition to whole-year courses, the college also offers various arts of short or medium duration during the year. Scattered around the island are a number of interesting offers of traineeships and apprenticeships in various fields. More information on education and training on Ærø is available if you contact UU Sydfyn and/or the Ærø Tourist and Business Office.

FESTIVALS OPERA, AND CONCERTS SØBYGAARD CONCERTS For years, renowned classical musicians have come to Søbygaard to give recitals in our concert hall, modelled on a Faroese wooden church by local architect Allan Havsteen Mikkelsen. All our guests praise the beautiful surroundings, the enthusiastic audience, the fine repertoire, and the social contact in the courtyard during intermissions, as the sun sets over Vitsø Lake; all parts of the very special atmosphere of the Søbygaard Summer Concerts. 20 years ago, Søbygaard Concerts were started by song-writer, author and musician Bjarne Jes Hansen and a group of entusiastic volunteers. This year again we proudly present a series of memorable musical encounters: This season, some of our performers will introduce other artforms along with their music. In our first concert, actor Nis BankMikkelsen will read poems by Aakjær and Claussen, and Carl Nielsen’s music, played by soloflutist Linnéa Villén and guitaist Allan Sjølin, will set the moods and underline the words. Later this season, we are presented with a »staged« version of Schubert’s Winterreise, where pianist Johannes Held and barytone Daniel Beskow will perform Schubert’s songs using dramatics and visual arts along with the music. Our program also covers more traditional chamber music recitals: This year is the 250th birthday of Beethoven. We celebrate this with a concert where the renowned Poseidon Quartet plays some of his most beautiful string quartets; the Ismena Piano Trio will celebrate Beethoven, too, but will also play music by some of the – perhaps unjustly so – lesser known female composers, eg Fanny Mendelssohn. There will be visits from artists who are new to Søbygaard Concerts as well as visits from familiar faces: Among the newcomers is accordionist Bjarke Mogensen, winner of Danish Radio 2’s Chamber Music Award 2018, who will be visiting us together with cellist Toke Møldrup. A familiar face is pianist Galya Kolarova, who played a lovely concert 4 8 > ÆRØ GUIDE 2020
TRIO ISMENA at Søbygaard in 2018. She returns this year with clarinetist Jerome Fruchart and cellist Johnny Teyssier. Last, but not least we invite you to a couple of concerts focusing on the theme of musical families. Flemming Dreisig, organist, pianist, Professor of Music and former resident of this island, and his two cousins, Inge and Elsebeth Dreisig, both sopranos, return to Ærø with a delightful programme of Mozart, Chopin, Dvorák, etc. Our final concert is also a family affair: Thomas Clausen, a classical pianist as well as a renowned jazz pianist, will star our Candlelight concert with all its inherent traditions together with his daughter, Nina Sveistrup Clausen, who is as much at ease doing a chilling ’Queen of the Night’ aria as she is as a modern singersongwriter. Program 2020 – Wednesdays 7.30 PM 10.6: One composer, two poets: Claussen, Aakjær and Nielsen. Linnéa Villén, flute, Allan Sjølin, guitar and actor Nis Bank-Mikkelsen,
15.7: An evening of Beethoven performed by the Poseidon Quartet: Jon Gjesme and Christine Enevold, violin, Magda Stevensson, viola, and Joel Laakso, cello. 22.7: A famous composer and some lesser known ones – Trio Ismena: Monika Malmquist, violin, Ida Nørholm, cello, and Christine Raft, piano. 29.7: Three capital B’s: Beethoven, Brahms and Bernstein. Galya Koralova, piano, Jerome Fruchart, cello, and Johnny Teyssier, clarinet. 5.8: The Three Dreisigs: Flemming Dreisig, piano, Inge and Elsebeth Dreisig, sopranos. 12.8: From Scarlatti and Bach to Piazolla and Anders Koppel: Bjarke Mogensen, accordion, and Toke Møldrup, cello. 19.8: Schubert’s Winterreise, a ’staged version’. Daniel Beskow, baryton, and Johannes Held, piano. 20.8: This Year’s Children’s Concert at 10am. Daniel Beskow og Johannes Held talk about their instruments, answer questions and play excerpts from last night’s concert. 16.9: The Two Clausens. Candlelight Concert with Pianist Thomas Clausen and soprano Nina Sveistrup Clausen Tickets: adults 150 DKK., under 16 yrs. 20 DKK. are purchased via the website www.søbygardsvenner.dk, during opening hours at Søbygaard’s office or at the door 60 min before the concert. Søbygaard Concerts are run by a group of volunteers, »Søbygaards Venner«. Any profits from the concerts go to the maintenance and running of Søbygaard.
FARINELLI WILL COME TO MARSTAL On Saturday, 27 June at 8.00 pm, HCC Boat Yard will house guidOpera's performance of »Farinelli«, the operetta by Emil Reesen and Mogens Dam. This will be the 12th time that the hall will house a performance with some of the best opera singers in Denmark. Over the years, highly beloved operas such
as »La Traviata«, »La Bohème«, »Madame Butterfly«, »The Barber of Seville«, »l'Elisir d'Amore« and several other great works have been enacted in the staging of opera singer Guido Paevatalu. This year, for the first time, an operetta will be on the programme. »Farinelli« is a rendering of reallife Carlo Broschi (1705-1782), an Italian castrato with a quality of voice so high that he was castrated as a boy to preserve his unique voice. Carlo Broschi made his debut in 1720 and soon acquired widespread fame for his perfect timbre which found great favour with the large European palaces – not least with the women. Using his stage name Farinelli, he appeared in Vienna, London and Paris. For 22 years he stayed with the Spanish court where he was to cheer up Philip V, the depressed king of Spain. Clearly, Farinelli's life was not an ordinary one, and therefore his life became a source of inspiration for various music dramatic performances round Europe – also in Denmark. In 1942, the Danish and very liberally interpreted version of the life of Farinelli had its opening night by the operetta "Farinelli" by Emil Reesen (music) and Mogens Dam (lyrics). Quite understandably, in the absence of a castrato, the title role was written for a tenor, sung at the opening night by Aksel Schiøtz. In the television version from 1961, the part was sung by Poul Bundgaard. Emil Reesen's music from the operetta has proved to be durable. Most Danes will sing along to »Livets glæder« (»Joys of Life«) and »Sangen har vinger« (»The Song has Wings«). Now the operetta in all its splendour can be experienced on stage at HCC Boat Yard in Marstal where acoustics – by sheer luck – have turned out to be simply unique! Tickets of two ranges are available. A-tickets at DKK 375 and B-tickets at DKK 325. Wish to buy tickets? Please see www.operavenner.dk

Over the years, Niels Henning Ørsted Pedersen, Jesper Thilo, Jacob Fischer and Kristin Korb have taken the ferry and played at the festival, among new talents such as Oilly Wallace, Mathias Heise and Zier Romme. At Andelen, an entry fee applies. The big concerts at the Yard have presented Daimi and The Louisiana Band, Kansas City Stompers and Ibrahim Electric, among others. The festival is operated by volunteers and supported by members and businesses on the island by various sponsorships.
