Nineteenth Century Shirvan Rug

In his fascinating and exhaustive study of the tribal rugs of Central Asia, Brian W. MacDonald deciphers many of the diagrammatic motifs such as symbols to ward off evil spirits embedded in the dense geometry of these textiles. He also comments on the impact of Islam on Caucasian rug designs: “The restrictions placed on the representation of natural forms led to the inventive creation of highly stylized floral and animal shapes… Without the restrictions imposed by Islam, the field of tribal art would perhaps never have been expanded in such a bold and exciting way.”

Aside from several volumes of his complete works, these included extremely rare titles such as a 1964 issue of the French journal Bizarre, edited by Jean Ferry and entirely devoted to Roussel’s work, along with a 1977 issue of L’Arc, also dedicated to Roussel and including commentary by Alain Robbe-Grillet and Michel Butor. They were obviously quite interested in him.”
