House Athletics Finals Friday 5th July 2019

Bruce Tulloh (1935-2018) Today we capture the spirit of athletic endeavour with the renaming of the Athletics Pavilion in memory of Bruce Tulloh (CR 1973-94) in a ceremony after the House Cup presentation. (13:12.0) and in early 1962 in New Zealand he pushed the double Olympic champion Peter Snell to a new world record for the mile, while his own time of 3:59.3 made him the seventh Briton to break the four minute mile. In the same year he won the 5,000 metres gold medal at the European Championships in Belgrade and finished fourth over 3 miles at the Commonwealth Games. In 1966 he set a British record for the 6 miles (27:23.8).

Bruce Tulloh, who taught Biology at Marlborough College from 1973 to 1994, was a world-class athlete who ran for Great Britain in the 1960s and became an influential coach. In 1959 he won his first AAA track title for the 3 miles. In 1960 he set a British record for the 3 miles (13:17.2) and qualified for the Rome Olympics in the 5,000 metres. In 1961 he broke the British record again for the 3 miles 2

Bruce was famous for running barefoot and he was the first non-African to adopt this running style, maintaining that it gave him a 50 metre advantage in a race over 5,000 metres. When he retired from international competition he embarked in 1969 on an epic 2,876 mile run across America from Los Angeles to New York, averaging 45 miles a day and breaking the previous record by eight days. He then wrote about the experience in his book Four Million Footsteps. In 1972 he coached the Kenyan Mike Boit to a silver medal in the 800 metres at the Munich Olympics. When he moved to Marlborough he combined coaching at local and elite levels with writing regular articles in Athletics Weekly and a string of books that reached a vast audience of runners of all abilities who benefitted from his wisdom and experience. His love of running remained undimmed and he clocked 1 hr 16 mins for a Half Marathon at the age of sixty. JFL

Welcome Dear Parents, Pupils, Colleagues and Friends, It is my great pleasure to welcome you to Marlborough’s House Athletics Finals which will be hotly contested by all Houses throughout the day and will, I am sure, prove a fitting, spirited end to a wonderful school year both in terms of sports contribution and achievement, but also in respect of the tone and success of the year as a whole. I wish all competitors well, whether record breaking athletes or those seeking House points, and thank all my colleagues for their unstinting support of this important event in the College’s calendar. It is a particular privilege to have the opportunity to remember and recognise today the incredible contribution of world class athlete and former Marlborough beak,

Bruce Tulloh (CR 1973-94), by naming the Pavilion in his and his family’s honour. It is a special occasion indeed to welcome Bruce’s wife, Sue, herself a supporter of the College for many years, to join us as we recognise the impact that this exceptional man had on our school community.

Review of the Season It has been a hugely successful term for the athletics programme, with our usual blend of large home meetings on a Saturday, attracting some of the top athletics schools in the south of the country to the Marlborough track under the watchful gaze of the White Horse. The Intermediate age group has seen a combination of two very strong Remove and Hundred year groups for both boys and girls, and their respective team results have reflected depth of talent. The loss of the Hundred and Upper Sixth to the examination season took its toll on the boys’ teams in particular, though the second half of the season has still thrown up its fair share of successes.

Highlights of the season have included the Wiltshire Pentathlon, where: • Shell Boys Ollie Howell (SU), Kurran Calvert-Davies (C1) and Edward Betts (C1) won the team event at the Wiltshire pentathlon • Tallulah Baker (EL Re) won the individual pentathlon • Edward Tan (CO Sh) came third in the individual Remove age Pentathlon The following athletes all finished in top three positions at the Wiltshire individual county championships, held in Swindon on Saturday 8th June: • Star Horlock (DA Sh) 3rd place 1500m • Daisy Reynolds (EL Sh) 3rd place 200m • Lanre Alli (BH Re) 3rd place 200m • Tallulah Baker (EL Re) 3rd place High Jump and 2nd place Long Jump • Edward Tan (CO Sh) 3rd place Long Jump • Poppy Dixon-Clarke (EL Sh) 2nd place Javelin • Charlie Maculan (CO Re) 2nd place Shot Put • Archie Loweth (BH Sh) 1st place 1500m • Mike Evloev (PR Re) 1st place Discus and Shot Put

4

• Imi Davis (EL Re) 1st place 300m • Charlotte Longden (NC Hu) 1st place 200m and 2nd place Long Jump

• Archie Loweth (BH Sh) 1500m 4min 30sec (10th place)

• Tilly Norman (MM Re) 1st place 3,000m

• Immy Davis (EL Re) 300m 44.45 (5th in heat)

• Harriet Eyles (MM L6) 1st place 400m and Shot Put

• Lanre Alli (BH Re) 200m 23.47s (3rd in heat and 8th in final)

Following their success at the Wiltshire championships, the following were selected to compete in the ethereal teal of Wiltshire at the South West regional championships in Exeter on Saturday 15th June: • Tallulah Baker (EL Re) High Jump 1.43m (10th place) and Long Jump 5.00m (7th place) • Mike Evloev (PR Re) Discus 41.58m (5th place) and Shot Put 12.57 (4th place) • Harriet Eyles (MM L6) 400m 60.72 (3rd place) and Shot Put 9.69m (4th place)

• Poppy Dixon-Clarke (EL Sh) Javelin 23.92m (5th place) Mikael Evloev’s (PR Re) performance in the discus exceeds the expectations for his age group to qualify for the English Schools’ National Championships at the Alexandra Stadium in Birmingham on the 12th and 13th July and he has been selected to represent Wiltshire at this year’s Games. This will be the second year in succession Mikael has been selected, and a year young in his Intermediate age group. He is a very exciting prospect for the future. 5

Charlotte Longden (NC Hu), our very own Ennis-Hill-like athletic star-in-the-making, who utilises her winter athletics training in Bath to casually compete for Team GB’s youth bobsleigh training squad (!), turns her head to heptathlon in the summer. Charlotte finished second at the early multi-events competition held at Millfield for Somerset and Wiltshire athletes, a significant improvement on her result last season. As a result she was selected to represent Wiltshire at the South West multi-event championships over the weekend of 22nd-23rd June. I would like to note here that Edward Tan (CO Sh) and Tallulah Baker (EL Re) were both also selected, but were unable to attend. We have also seen an incredible nine College records broken this term, as well as three which were broken on House Athletics Finals day in the second half of this term which deserve recognition. Congratulations go to: 6

• Atti Hue-Williams (DA Re) 80m Hurdles 12.1 seconds • Edward Tan (CO Sh) Long Jump 5.89m • Mike Evloev (PR Re) Discus 41.58m (broken his own record three times this season!) • Poppy Dixon-Clarke (EL Sh) Javelin 27.48m • Georgia Carss (NC Hu) Shot Put 9.47m • Lanre Alli (BH Re) 200m 23.3 seconds • Zak Chukwuemeka (SU Hu) High Jump 1.93m • Naomi Hughan (MM Re), Charlotte Longden (NC Hu), Tallulah Baker (EL Re) and Jemima Money-Kyrle (IH Re) 4x100m Relay 52.8 seconds • Charlotte Longden (NC Hu) 200m 25.6 seconds

• Charlotte Longden (NC Hu) Long Jump 5.19m • Tilly Norman (MM Re) 800m 2 minutes 23.5 seconds • Harriet Eyles (MM L6) Shot Put 9.98m It would be remiss of me not to take this opportunity to thank the work of the grounds and catering staff for their tireless work all season to maintain the track area and cater our considerable number of events. None of this would be possible without the efforts and administration of the sport by our three external and all of the internal coaching staff, who have been as impressive as ever this season. The House athletics finals always present such a positive bookend to the Summer term and academic year. Pupils from the Shell, Remove

and Lower Sixth will compete for House trophies in a spirit of friendly rivalry which is such a unique-feature of full-boarding life. I hope that all visiting parents and Common Room colleagues enjoy the occasion this afternoon, and wish you all a well-rested and enjoyable summer break. The spirit of athletic endeavour is captured poignantly today by the renaming of the pavilion in memory of Bruce Tulloh (CR 1973-94). The Marlborough College Athletics Club is in a positive place, as evidenced through this programme and the successes of our athletes year-on-year. We will ensure that our Club continues to acknowledge the all-encompassing values of athleticism in recognition of Bruce. Marcus Sharrad Master i/c Athletics
