Introduction Skill-Up Week is the name given to the penultimate week of the Summer Term of the Hundred. It marks the end of the GCSE examinations and the transition into the Sixth Form. The challenges that are undertaken and the experiences that are had will form the basis of their university application. Although work experience is seen as a valuable addition to a Marlburian’s profile it is anticipated that any work experience will be organised at another time during the summer vacation so that the opportunities available during Skill-Up Week can be available to all. Whilst some trips have a specific subject emphasis, they are not exclusive to pupils intending to study that subject in the Sixth Form. However, a strong interest in the content of the trip is expected. It is also worth noting that if your son/daughter is in the CCF and/or the Colts Cricket 1st team, they are expected to honour their commitment to these trips. There are many activity options both at home and away. Selection Procedure There will be a digital form to complete in the Lent Term and sign up for trips will be on a first come first served basis. There will be restrictions on the number of places for some options. RCT

History & The Arts Trip to Vienna 21st – 26th June, cost approx. £820 Trip Leader: CAFM/CMC
V
ienna is one of most spectacular and beautiful of Europe’s capital cities. Over the week we’ll get to know both its past and present by visiting major monuments as well as quirkier corners and street life, tracing many of the major characters and developments in European history and culture; from the dramatic Turkish sieges to Hitler’s Anschluss, from the magnificence of the Hapsburgs to the shady underworld of the Cold War spying. Vienna has long been one of the world’s most cultured cities, and we’ll enjoy its gorgeous Baroque palaces, its dynamic Jugenstil (Art Nouveau), and explore artists like Klimt. We’ll see where Beethoven and Mozart lived, and where Freud had his practice. In the Hofburg (the Royal Palace) we’ll see one of the world’s most atmospheric and valuable collections of treasures, including the ‘unicorn’s tusk’ belonging to the Holy Roman Emperors. We will take a trip out of the city on Europe’s longest river, the Danube, to a ruined castle where Richard the Lionheart was held prisoner.

his five day trip to exotic Sicily, includes a journey (via cable car and 4x4 jeeps) to the crater rim and high lava fields of magnificent Mt Etna, 3236m, one of the world’s most continuously active volcanoes. Next, by ferry and on foot we will travel to the summit of Gran Cratere, a 500m high volcano on the Aeolian Island of Vulcano, to bathe in hot volcanic mud pools whilst considering the movement of the African and Eurasian plates which cause the volcanic activity in the region. We will enjoy some of the finest and distinctive Sicilian Baroque architecture in Noto, known for its early 18th century religious buildings and palaces, the classical site of the extraordinary Greek amphitheatre in Taormina and the ancient Greek and Roman city of Syracuse, birthplace of Archimedes. We will also visit the Cyclops coast and the delightful villages of Aci Castello and Aci Trezza and the resort of Giardini Naxos on the Ionian Riviera. This trip will interest those inspired by Geography, History of Art, Classics and Italian.

he focus of this week will be in generating creative writing through encounters with wild landscapes, wildlife and historical sites – and through lively conversation. Pembrokeshire, with its spectacular cliffs and unspoilt beaches, and little-known Preseli Hills, is ideally suited for such a programme and for experiencing this landscape in more active and challenging ways – an afternoon of coasteering, a kayaking expedition and an evening boat trip around Ramsey are planned to bring out pupils’ creativity. There will be some walks to remote beaches, and opportunities for swimming. Pupils will all be issued notebooks to reflect upon their experiences, and time will be set aside for the writing tasks and for sharing. We will be based in St. David’s in Pembrokeshire.

KRUM is a charity that educates young people about safe sex, the spread of HIV, gang and gender violence in Eswatini (formerly Swaziland), a small land-locked country which sits east of Johannesburg, South Africa, using the core values of rugby union and physical activity. The College has worked with SKRUM since 2008 and on our last trip in 2017 pupils planted fruit trees and mended desks, windows and blackboards in a remote primary school. They also raised funds to fit a new water tank alongside coaching and playing with the children. Over these two weeks Marlburians have the opportunity to work philanthropically for SKRUM on their day-to-day charitable work and experience a unique culture. The trip culminates in a four-night stay around Johannesburg, where pupils will visit the world-renowned Apartheid Museum, rounding the tour off with a once-in-alifetime game drive experience at Mabula Game Lodge, seeking Africa’s “Big Five”.
