Rugby has a heritage at Marlborough College that stretches back for over 150 years. It provides a challenging and inclusive environment, which aims to develop the character and skillset of every player. Marlborough played its first ever interschools rugby match against Clifton in 1864, and since then we have produced 38 full international players and four England captains. Rugby is a vehicle for developing a strong collegiate environment, where being part of a team is valued as highly as elite performance. We regularly field 19 squads on match day, involving over 320 pupils each week which gives every boy the opportunity to represent the College. All our players are guided by talented coaching staff with a vast amount of experience spanning from development to international level. We coach, train and play, guided by the values of Teamwork, Respect, Enjoyment, Discipline and Self-Organising (TREDS).

Facilities Scholarships & Bursaries
Marlborough offers an exceptional experience for aspiring rugby players. We offer bespoke training plans to develop talent and enable the rugby sports scholar to pursue their goals within the England Elite Pathway.
Sport scholars benefit from our strength and conditioning programme which includes nutritional and psychological profiling, specialist tactical and technical advice through video analysis and the coaching expertise of former international and Premiership players. Each scholar is monitored throughout the year to ensure that there is a balance between their sporting commitments and their academic priorities.
We can offer means-tested bursary places of up to 100% of fees paid, and a limited number of discretionary non means-tested scholarship places carrying a fee reduction of up to 20%.
Professional collaborations
Players benefit from our range of top facilities, including the Premiership standard Hamersley pitch which is one of the finest schoolboy rugby venues in the country. The pitch is named in honour of Alfred St George Hamersley (C3 1862-66), a former Marlborough College pupil and England international of the 1870s who was a pioneer of rugby in New Zealand. There are a further ten pitches along with state-of-the-art gym facilities for strength and conditioning training.
Star Performers
Marlborough College has an excellent partnership with Bath Rugby across the age ranges, which sees talented players enter the Development Player Pathway providing the chance for those with greatest potential to be selected to join the Bath Academy Development Player Group. 20 players are currently with Premiership Player Development Centres.

Fixtures
The College has a competitive and prestigious fixture list including some of the oldest schoolboy fixtures in the country. We reached the final stages of the National Schools Cup in 2019 (U18) and 2020 (U15) and are active participants in the England Rugby Football Schools Union (ERFSU) county and national competitions. In the Lent term we run a Rugby Sevens programme at U14, U16 & U18 level with each team playing up to four tournaments including the prestigious Rosslyn Park 7s.
Josh Dingley (C1 2016-21) – Professional contract with Bath Rugby. Senior debut at Gloucester in 2021 before making his Premiership debut against Saracens in February 2022.
Archie Griffin (C3 2014-19) – Tighthead prop who played throughout the Wales age-groups before earning a professional contract with Bath Rugby in 2019 and was a member of the Wales U20 Six Nations squad the following year.
Henry Martin (PR 2011-16) – Progressed through the Bath Rugby Academy system whilst at Marlborough before earning an England Sevens contract. Featured in two Varsity matches at Twickenham.
Jamie Gibson (C2 2004-09) – A member of the Grand Slam winning England U18 side in 2008 and has made over 250 top-flight appearances for clubs such as London Irish, Leicester Tigers and Northampton Saints.
Player Pathway
Dom Coulson (C1 2013-18) – A standout performer for the Kenyan U20 squad at the Junior World Trophy in Brazil. Promoted to the senior squad in 2019.
Byron Lloyd-Gilmour (SU 2020-22) – Excelled or Bath Rugby Under-18s and is now studying at Bath University whilst training and playing elite rugby for Bath RFC and the Super BUCS competition.
