House fire battle stops gas explosion WILLIAM WOODWORTH
william@topsouthmedia.co.nz
Marlborough fire crews battled for four hours as they worked to
prevent a potential gas explosion. A family home on Manson Street in Blenheim was gutted by a blaze in the early hours of Friday morning.
The young family, including two children, escaped uninjured except for minor burns but lost all their possessions in the fire. Crews from five brigades across
the region managed to prevent further tragedy after saving two residential gas cylinders from the blaze. Fire Emergency New Zealand
(FENZ) Shift Manager Simon Lyford yesterday paid tribute to the crews who attended.

Speaking Spanish on the silver screen WILLIAM WOODWORTH
Marlborough rolled out la alfombra roja for cultural learning at the opening night of Marlborough’s first Latin America and Spain Film Festival. Chilean Consul in New Zealand Maria Alejandra Farias Munoz joined a full house at Connect Blenheim for the first film, the historical family documentary Beyond My Grandfather Allende. The film was directed by the granddaughter of the former Chilean president on the 50th anniversary of Pinochet’s coup d’etat. Films from Spain, Chile, Peru, Brazil, Cuba, Argentina, and Mexico screened throughout the four-day festival, stretching from children’s animation film Ainbo: Spirit of the Amazon, political and legal thriller Argentina 1985 and the Peruvian dark comedy Las Mejores Familias. Consul Munoz says the nationwide festival had great support and was pleased to see it expand to another area of New Zealand with plenty of Spanish speakers. “The credit goes to the volunteers in every venue that put in hard work to be able to present the festival and present our culture to not only Spanish speakers but anyone eager to learn.
“We chose Beyond My Grandfather Allende because of how privately the documentary reaches into Chilean history, and I’m always surprised at how knowledgeable New Zealand is about the history of Chile. “From my point of view this festival brings together all of the Spanish-speaking embassies to work together which is great to see too.” Marlborough Multicultural Centre Chairwoman Matilde Figuracion was pleased to be able to bring films of different cultures to an eager audience in Blenheim. “New Zealand has a love of film whether its watching or making them, and we share similarities and nuances between filmmakers from across different languages. “Films are a great way to create intercultural connections, and each of these films make people think and consider how similar we all really are.” Opening night guests were greeted by a traditional Easter Island/ Rapa Nui performance and a short film from Spanish born Blenheim resident Vanessa Martinez, Living Abroad. “Films present culture and personality like no other, and it allows many of us to reconnect

with our culture’s stories as well as share with others,” said Vanessa. Marlborough District Councillor, and former MMC Manager Deborah Dalliessi and Community Partnerships Advisor Jodie Griffiths were at the festival. Events like the Latin America and Spain Film Festival were a great way to create more cultural wealth, Deborah explains. “The more we can create a cultural wealth of new events … and finding new ways to create
cross-cultural connections, the better.” “Being able to provide opportunities to showcase our vibrant, colourful community in its entirety is a major goal of our new contestable Community Grants and having such a successful night to kick off our first grant recipient’s event is great to see,” agreed Jodie. Lucky escape as neighbours call for help From the front
The Manson Street family home has been left gutted by a fire. house. Photo: William Woodworth.
He says they did a great job securing the gas cylinders by keeping them isolated from flames and cool with fire hoses. The cylinders were then removed safely. “By the time the two initial fire engines arrived from Blenheim, the house was well involved in fire and a second alarm was called out which involved another Blenheim crew as well as crews from Picton and Renwick”, says Simon. “Firefighters used hoses and ground monitors to protect two gas cylinders attached to the side of the house, while two firefighters cleared the residence wearing breathing apparatus. “We received multiple calls about the fire within seconds of one an-
other which is a huge credit to neighbours.” Crews were first alerted at 11.57pm with two units initially attending from Blenheim. The call out was quickly escalated with extra units called in from Blenheim, Renwick and Picton. FENZ say they are unsure about cause of the fire at this stage. “All members of the family were accounted for, with one person being treated and dismissed on site for minor burn injuries by the St John ambulance that attended,” says Simon. A Givealittle page has been set up for donations to help the family.

Gyrocopter crash investigation underway PAULA HULBURT
paula@topsouthmedia.co.nz
It will be many months before the cause of a gyrocopter crash that claimed the life of local pilot Martin Pattie is known. The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has launched an investigation into the fatal accident in which Martin, 63, died earlier this month. Accident investigators have met with emergency responders from fire, ambulance and police who rushed to the scene at Omaka Airfield. But with the investigation still in the very early stages, it is too soon
to rule on any possible causes, says a CAA spokesperson. “It is too early to determine what the cause or causes were that led to the accident. “There won’t be anything now for quite some time. Our safety investigators look into the circumstances surrounding fatal accidents on behalf of the Director of Civil Aviation. The most important reason to do that is to learn any lessons the accident may have for the rest of the aviation community.” Gyrocopters in New Zealand are registered as microlight aircraft and must undergo an annual condition check like a Warrant of
Fitness for vehicles. The New Zealand Autogyro Association says a pilot needs to have a microlight license with a Gyrocopter group endorsement to fly. Martin was a keen flyer who was often spotted in the skies overhead. Described by those who knew him as a great man with a heart of gold, his sudden death has left the Seddon community where he lived devastated. A Funeral Service for Martin was held at the Awatere Memorial Hall, Seddon on Saturday followed by a private cremation.

Smiles and support celebrated PAULA HULBURT
Their friendly smiles are a welcome sight for patients and visitors to Wairau Hospital. As the main doors open, the reception team are ready and waiting to help calm fears and ease anxieties. Now this welcoming team of volunteers has been officially recognised for their efforts, collectively being named as Volunteer Marlborough’s Volunteer of the Month. Volunteer Coordinator Jo Moon says volunteers are “far more than just a smiling face at the front desk.” “These wonderful people volunteer because they want to give back or pay it forward. “They enjoy working in the community and supporting a service that supports and appreciates them as well.” Te Whatu Ora volunteers provide information or advice on the location of services within the hospital such as the cafe and chapel. For many being at the hospital can be a daunting time, Jo says. “Simply showing up to the hospital can be a daunting prospect for some people. “So, there is a wonderful and friendly team of people who

Friendly in every way. Probably too friendly, they were taken advantage of . They certainly did not come over as self entitled brats. In those days people scoffed at those of us who loved Picton. Apparently we just were not flash enough. Sadly the investment mentality of the last decades and took over and it is what it is. River health report Marlborough rivers are in good health when compared to others around New Zealand. Environmental Scientist Steffi Henkel told October’s Environment and Planning committee meeting that good water quality was a cornerstone of a thriving region. “Rivers and streams hold a pivotal role in the social, cultural and economic well-being of our community,” she said. Regular monitoring was crucial for the management of freshwater resources and there were now 56 sites around Marlborough, an increase of 22, and all these would help provide better regional coverage and accurate data, she said. In recent years water quality had been the focus of increased attention from central government including the introduction of a new National Policy Statement for Freshwater Management. Ms Henkel said Council did field measurement and lab analysis of samples gathered during site visits and also sampled macroinvertebrates at 49 sites annually

In seven years, the skilled and energetic team at Picton Dawn Chorus have mobilised volunteers and households to trap pests and bring native birds back to the area. It has an established track record of predator control. Picton Dawn Chorus (PDC) was the Community Innovation Award Winner in the Cawthron Marlborough Environment Awards. The judging team found a cluster of people who harnessed their passion for conservation and converted it into action. Next Friday, 1 November, the group will showcase its
work and explain how they organised themselves into an efficient operation, making good use of technology and volunteers, at a field day. The field day will include a garden trapping demonstration and walk along a PDC trapline on Victoria Domain. Please RSVP by 1 November to info@cmea.org.nz to book your spot.

NOVEMBER 8-12 2023 NEW ZEALAND’S PREMIER GARDEN EVENT
NZ’s favourite garden event on track to bloom ADRIENNE MATTHEWS
Raupara Springs Garden Marlborough is about to celebrate 30 years as the country’s most popular garden show with more than 2000 visitors expected from far and wide. Liz Morrow who has established her own garden of international significance near Warkworth is attending for the tenth time, bringing twenty-six others with her. “The variety of the gardens is such a strength,” she says. “Having the opportunity to meet the owners and making friendships with other garden enthusiasts from around the country and abroad is such a pleasure.” The original founders, Richard Macfarlane of Winterhome, Carolyn Ferraby of Barewood
and Geraldine ‘Puddy’ Sheild of Bankhouse along with then local tourism manager, Maryanne Webber, had a clear understanding of the inspiration visiting great gardens brings and the benefits to the local community. Tim Morrow, involved with the event over the years says, “From the outset, Garden Marlborough was always going to be more than just a garden show. It is more like Marlborough on show, hosted by the whole province.” Many of the gardens have been on the tour programme for the whole thirty years and six are gardens of national and/or international significance. It will be the last year for Garden Marlborough Patron Carolyn and Joe Ferraby’s famous Barewood garden at the event. “After thirty years of developing
2023 is the last opportunity for garden enthusiasts to tour Carolyn and Joe Ferraby’s inspirational Barewood garden, which has been a part of Garden Marlborough since it began. Photo: Supplied. and loving this garden, we are planning to sell,” says Carolyn. “It is time for new adventures and a property is something that we feel is just on loan for the time you have it, however long that it is.” The format of the event has
changed little over its lifetime simply because it is so successful. “Profits from the charity art auction and fund-raising activities go to help support local community projects that promote the pleasures and benefits of gardening and enhance Marlborough’s en-
vironment,” explains the event’s marketing manager Amanda McRae. This year’s funds raised will support a new garden and landscaping project at Alzheimers Marlborough. The Stihl Shop Garden Fete with over 200 garden-related, food and artisan stalls rounds off the weekend’s events on Sunday 12 November from 9am to 3pm and is an absolute must to visit. “With so many plant nurseries disappearing around the country, the garden fete is a fantastic place to find treasures,” says Liz. “It is very amusing to see the plane loaded up with goodies for the return home,” she laughs. Celebrating 150 years of Marlborough’s A&P Show ADRIENNE MATTHEWS
There is extra excitement in the Marlborough air this week with the 150th Marlborough A & P Show rapidly approaching this coming weekend at the A & P Park in Maxwell Road, Blenheim. The show has only been cancelled three times in its long history, twice during World War II and once during the Covid pandemic and this year’s show is a must to visit. The Marlborough Agricultural Association March was set up in March 1876 and established the annual event as a celebration of agricultural and pastoral excellence, giving local farmers an opportunity to show off the best of what they produced. In the early days the main crops grown in the region were wheat and other cereal crops along with vegetables and livestock which consisted

camaraderie and chance to get together once a year to compete with each other while “townies”, not used to farm life, could learn about many aspects of life on the land and have plenty of fun with so much to see and do.
This year is particularly special for the Marlborough event as it is also commemorating the building of the Sheep Pavilion a century ago, one of only two remaining such heritage buildings in the country. A Category 2 Historic Place, the Sheep Pavilion is in need of urgent repair and the A & P Show will be an opportunity for visitors to contribute to the main fundraising restoration project by purchasing the cost of a sheet of iron to be used in the restoration. The building is a multi-purpose one, also used by other organisations such as the Sunday Farmers’ Market and Marlborough Football and needs to be brought back to its original weathertight state so it can continue to be used by different organisations well into the future. The annual Royal Equestrian Show is also taking place at the show with competitors entering from around New Zealand who will be participating in a large range of horse and rider events. This show starts a day early on Friday from 8am and continues

Dressage delight … from breaking a leg to breaking through in Oz PETER JONES
peter@topsouthmedia.co.nz
What a difference a year makes. On October 16, 2022 Melissa Galloway’s dressage future looked bleak. Kicked by one of her young horses, the impact breaking the bone at the top of her tibia, she lay in hospital watching a dark cloud hover over her immediate dressage prospects. However, exactly 12 months later, to the day, she was back at the top of her game. The Tua Marina-based equestrian and top mount Windermere J’Obei W [aka Joey] illuminated the 2023 Australian National Dressage Championships at Boneo Park in Melbourne with a series of stunning performances, their NZ record-setting CDI-W Grand Prix routine underlining their dominance of Australasian dressage. The duo capped that off with a personal best score in the CDI-W Grand Prix Freestyle, putting them firmly on track to represent NZ at the Paris Olympic Games next year. Qualifying for and competing at the 2024 Olympics has been a long-term goal for Melissa and her efforts in Australia have taken her another step closer. While that was just below her GP best, she was happy to get top marks across the board from the Dutch judge, who had officiated at top-level European events. “It was the toughest competition I had faced in Australasia, by far,” said Melissa. “The whole trip, from start to finish was amazing, just so smooth. There are so many things that can go wrong taking horses to Australia … travel is huge, organisation is mental and you need to have horses sound - but we had no hiccups at all. “The next few hours after we had won the freestyle with a record performance … we all just couldn’t quite believe it. It was unreal and made it all worthwhile.” Adding to the family’s enjoyment was the fact Melissa’s younger horse Elmo, which was bred at their Windermere Farm base, won the Prix St George title. “That was also very special,” added Melissa. “The trip was a bit of a whirlwind and afterwards it was like, wow, did that really happen?”

Marlborough Forrest Wines Whero continues to set the pace in the Wine Brokers NZ premier interclub tennis competition. On Wednesday afternoon they took on fellow unbeaten side Rapaura Wairau River Blanc and came away with a 4-2 victory, firmly establishing themselves at the top of the table. The doubles matches were shared. Whero’s top-ranked partnership of Hamish Morrow and Chris Nott came away with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Jared Bell and Ant Walkenhorst while Clyde Sowman and Issy O’Brien defeated Josh Harris and Mieko Kimura 6-1, 6-0. O’Brien and Harris were both
playing their first premier matches. Straight set singles wins to Morrow, 6-3 over Walkenhorst, and Nott, who beat Bell 6-2, 6-3, put Whero in the box seat, then youngster Harris battled his way to a 2-6, 6-4, 10-8 victory over Sowman to clinch the tie. O’Brien also marked her debut with a singles victory, beating Kimura 6-0, 7-5. The evening’s second match featured Rapaura Wairau River Noir and Marlborough Forrest Wines Ma, the former coming away with a 4-2 win. After the doubles the tie was level, Noir’s Ella Sowman and Glen Cameron beating Stephen Dempster and Jaco van Hensbergen 1-6, 6-4, 10-3 then Ma’s Anna Simpson and Koos Richter downing Eveline Apthorp van
der Linden and Max Sowman 6-2, 6-1. Singles wins to Cameron, Max Sowman and Apthorp van der Linden ensued. Cameron defeated van Hensbergen 6-2, 6-2, Sowman accounted for Richter 6-1, 6-4 while Apthorp van der Linden eventually prevailed 2-6, 6-3, 10-7 over Simpson. The final singles clash was labelled the game of the round, Ella Sowman and Dempster playing out an enthralling three-setter, before Dempster prevailed 6-3, 2-6, 14-12 to pick up a second point for the losing side. Wairau Valley move ahead PETER JONES

Renwick youngsters in a league of their own PETER JONES
Renwick School are the proud holders of the Simon Mannering Cup after coming out on top of Wednesday’s tournament in Brightwater. Eight teams contested the event, which had not been played since 2019, with Renwick prevailing in the final 2412 against Saint Paul’s Catholic School. In a closely-fought decider, some gallant goal line defence which held up their rival’s big ball carriers proved decisive for the Marlborough-based side. The primary school invitation tournament was organised by
Southern Zone Rugby League and involved years 5-6 students in nine-a-side matches. Tournament co-ordinator Allan Brodie, after seeing his grandkids enjoying primary school league in Southland, decided to try and resurrect the Simon Mannering event. He tracked down the trophy to Henley School in Richmond, then got the ball rolling for what is hoped to be an annual tournament. Renwick School sports co-coordinator Nick Rowton took the 10-strong group across the hill and said “we were the only Marlborough side invited, so it was good to fly the flag for the
province – and we ended up winning it”. Nick said, “There were two or three pretty talented sevens and union players who play for Renwick Rugby Club, but they hadn’t played a lot of rugby league before. They enjoyed it, adapted to it and rose to the challenge.” Next year it is hoped to run a preliminary qualifying tournament in Marlborough. The Renwick team comprised: Jairus Tikotikoca-Lal, Harlen Nicholson, Marko Swanepoel, Toby Johnson, Flynn Third, Corban McLennan, Maddox Stove, Ned Bell, Luan Reynierse and Lewis Johnson.
Black Cottage hosts Firehawks side PETER JONES
The United Country and Vineyards Club recently hosted a collection of players from the Wellington/Tasman Over50s side at the Black Cottage ground. In chilly conditions a long way from ideal for
cricket, the sides engaged in two Twenty20 matches, UCVC winning both. Their opponents got in some invaluable early season match practice in what was effectively a trial game before sides were named to contest the Over50s Interprovincial Tour-
nament in early December at Mount Maunganui. Four players with Marlborough connections made the final Firehawks division one squad – captain Scott McHardy, Greg Stretch, Mason Robinson and Jason Campbell.
Wairau Valley eased their way to the top of the Marlborough division one 50-over cricket competition at Horton Park on Saturday. After opening with a comfortable win over Wairau last weekend, Valley made short work of Renwick on the number one wicket. Valley’s bowlers made early inroads and never let any Renwick batsman become settled at the crease as they slumped to 69 all out in the 18th over. Liam George led the way with 5-28 from just 4.4 overs while Sam Boyce bagged 3-9 from four and Luke Pannell took 2-11 from five. Max Armstrong’s 20 runs was top score for the Green Machine, with Lachlan Edwards contributing 15. Valley lost a couple of early wickets in the chase, but once Matthew Stretch strode to the crease, the target was achieved in just 10.5 overs. Stretch slammed 44 from just 29 balls to propel his side to 71 for the loss of three wickets and a seven-wicket victory. On the other ground, Celtic and Wairau met in a match that also resulted in a seven-wicket win. This time it was Celtic who prevailed, dismissing Wairau for 145 in 38 overs, then reaching their winning target in 32 overs. Jaden Adams had a top day, claiming 4-40 from eight overs, then scoring an unbeaten half century, Liam Young bagged 2-26 while Ben Holdaway took 2-28. Tarin Mason, 25, Nick Weaver, 32, and Hunter Ruffell, 20, top scored for a disappointed Wairau crew after

Although Holdaway and Tom Sutherland went early, a 76-run partnership between Josh Poole (42) and Adams steadied the ship then, when Poole departed, Luke Holdaway joined Adams, who finished 50 not out, to see out the match with a 57-run partnership. Luke Holdaway was unbeaten on 29 when the winning runs were struck. Weaver, 2-37 from eight, was the pick of the Wairau attack.

Now in its seventh year, the annual Matt Neal Memorial tournament once again provided an opportunity for players, both competitive and social, to come together in football and friendship. Staged over Anniversary Week-
end at A&P Park, the tournament attracted 14 sides, six in the competitive grade and eight in the social ranks. The competitive sides were 10-a-side, the social comprising eight players on each team. Combinations from Marlborough, Nelson and Christchurch attended the event, which was set
