Boat sinking sparks futile search as family escape PAULA HULBURT
paula@topsouthmedia.co.nz
A boat which sank in Picton Harbour sparked an unnecessary search operation after the accident was not reported to officials. The master of the Interislander ferry saw debris in the water and contacted a rescue crew. Harbourmaster Captain Jake Oliver says the family who were onboard did not realise they had to report the incident to officials. He is urging all recreational and commercial boaties to read the new Marlborough’s Navigation Bylaw 2023 which came into force on 20 December. “Debris was spotted by the master of the Interisland ferry who readied rescue boats and delayed the ferry’s passage to assist,” says Captain Oliver. “Lots of resources were pulled in only to find there was no need. “We later discovered it only took six minutes for the boat to sink and there were six adults and children on board.
“Fortunately, no-one was hurt but it is concerning this incident was not reported. “It’s a timely reminder to boaties such incidents are required to be reported by law.” If you are in danger on the water, you should phone 111. If there has been a maritime incident but with no immediate danger to life, call Marlborough District Council.
Harbourmaster Captain Jake Oliver says the family who were onboard a sinking boat did not realise they had to report the incident to officials. Photo: File. Incidents are also reported through the Marlborough Cruise Guide app to keep the general boating public aware. Encouraging safe speed is a particular focus for Harbour Patrol this summer, particularly in high-risk areas, some of which are marked with yellow
5 knot buoy markers. “Collisions at sea can be catastrophic and wake from speeding boats can be dangerous too. Consider the safety of other water users and always operate at a safe speed. “It’s not just good sense, it’s also the law,” Captain Oliver says. He reminds boaties it is also a requirement to carry enough lifejackets for everyone on board including dinghies and kayaks. This rule also applies to paddle boards, kiteboards, and windsurfers as well, unless a wetsuit is worn. “Harbours will be keeping a close look at this over the summer and our team will be out on the water almost every day over summer,” Captain Oliver says. “We want people to have a safe and enjoyable time on the water so if we see unsafe activity on the water we will intervene.” For more information on Marlborough’s Navigation Bylaw 2023 go to www.marlborough.govt.nz/environment/harbours or visit the Marlborough Cruise Guide app.

Wet weather warriors a boost for charity WILLIAM WOODWORTH
A wine company’s clothing revamp is set to benefit a Blenheim charity shop. Whitehaven Wines’ inhouse work wear is getting a rebrand. And the company has now joined forces with The Blue Door to ensure their older gear goes to a good home. The move means high-visibility jackets, pants and gumboots will be finding their way more regularly to the shop. Whitehaven representative Daniel Lynch says that finding a channel for reusing their older kit, and future kit that can’t be reused, was key to their equipment upgrade.
Whitehaven Wines’ Daniel Lynch and the Blue Door’s Stephen Leitch are finding new homes for old wet weather kit. Photo: William Woodworth. “By having kit organised and standardised on our side for all of our employees, we know on cold or wet Marlborough days our staff aren’t left without,” says Daniel.
“Over vintage, when we have 15 plus staff coming in from a shift and another 15 plus going out, we want to know everyone has equipment, because we don’t want them to be sharing
wet kit either.” He says handing out kit to new employees is also a great way to make them feel like part of the team immediately. “It will also be quite cool for us to be able to hand standard kit to someone on the first day of their contract like a sports team.” Whitehaven is upgrading inhouse equipment so future employees can be provided with matching equipment against rain and cold in the winery. But finding a way to recycle their older gear had initial proved problematic, Daniel says. “By having this re-use relationship with the Blue Door, it means we know our stuff can go a lot
longer and directly benefit locals and a worthwhile local organization.” Blue Door chairperson Stephen Leitch was pleased to have the initial relationship underway and hopes to have more wineries jump aboard the scheme. “It’s great to be able to build these relationships to ensure less waste goes into landfills and instead finds a new home. Things like work clothes and work boots are always in demand so that was another huge positive for us. “The Whitehaven team has been a great start to finding more ways to make sustainable choices, and I hope we are able to expand this much further as we go forward.”
Hospital ball a boost to Foodbank WILLIAM WOODWORTH
Wairau Hospital’s 2023 fundraising efforts have been delivered to Marlborough Community Foodbank, with $7500 of foodstuffs and donations to help stuff food parcels this Christmas. Long-life food goods were required on entry to the annual Hospital Ball that took place on September 30. Organised by junior doctors, the funds raised from the ball, as well as proceeds from two quiz nights, are going into the Community at what is the Foodbank’s busiest time of the year. Wairau Hospital’s Caroline Bain and Alice Regan delivered the donated food and headed along to the Foodbank’s base – with the duo wowed by the scale of supporting locals with food parcels. “It’s so amazing when you get here and see the tangible effort that helping the Marlborough Community Foodbank does to help out locals with all of the
food on shelves and volunteers making donation packages,” says Caroline. “Churchill Hospital, Allan Scott and the Care Foundation have also been amazingly supportive, and all our guests and ball auction prizegivers have been so generous – I’m very impressed at the generosity of this little old town. “It’s great to be actively helping people with food donations, because it just feels like it means more than just money in a bank account. “With how the price of food has climbed, we thought it was a great tangible way to give back directly to locals in need,” expands Alice. “The Foodbank team knows what they need to get as well, so having both food and monetary support for the team here was really important to us.” Wairau Hospital decided to support the Community Foodbank this year for their first ball since 2020, after they started their support donating proceeds from

Christmas packages as a Christmas roast from our amazing local donors, so where possible our packages include the freshest vegetables you’ll find – we’ve already packed 21 today by 11am!” Wynnie says that the December period is always the hardest, with 200 parcels delivered in December last year and more expected
to be needed this year. “We also asked that for our street appeal people left Christmassy goodies in their donations so we can leave some extra treats in hampers this year.” However, with the holiday season comes more stress on Marlburians’ bank accounts which means the amount of food reserves goes as soon as it comes in. “Unfortunately, foodbanks always need topping up, and what we currently have will only last until some time in April at this point of supply and demand”, says volunteer Lynette Stanley. “Shelves can get pretty bare, so having the ability to go and buy bulk and stock shelves is just as helpful as physical food donations”. Marlborough Community Foodbank would like to thank all the businesses and people who have contributed to Wairau Hospital’s donation, and all contributors to their food packages that stock Marlborough’s pantries for people in need.

Santa Claus had an early four-day visit to Marlborough to lay the groundwork for his local deliveries this year, with the help of the local firefighters. Photo: William Woodworth.
Exclusive: Interview with Santa WILLIAM WOODWORTH
Marlburians may have seen a special guest touring the region last week, with Santa Claus taking a quick detour to the province before his busy next few weeks. Jolly old St Nick joined the Men@ Work Santa On Tour four-day tour of the region, pre-emptive work he needed to do “because of the massive number of good children in the region”. “There’s so many here that I had to come for a little while early and scope out my delivery route to all the local girls and boys on the nice list. “I always love getting letters from Marlborough ... if the kids weren’t
so good, I wouldn’t have had to come so early.” Santa says that he wears his traditional uniform – boots and all – all the way until he has finished his job on Boxing Day. “Unfortunately, I couldn’t organise bringing the elves or the reindeer this time because they’re busy preparing – Mayor Nadine Taylor and the District Council said yes but couldn’t help further as they’ve got plenty on already.” We asked Mayor Nadine Taylor, who said that all elf and safety procedures were followed. “It certainly has been busy …. but having a good laugh is very good for our ‘elf ’,” said Mayor Taylor Suspicions are that reindeer im-
port permits and elf visas weren’t organized for this trip with just Santa himself making the trip, but he promises that permits have been received already for the big delivery shift. “They’ll be here for Christmas Day deliveries, but luckily I’ve had local firefighters’ step into the elves’ shoes on my quick visit. “I’m used to shorter elves, but in this job economy I’ll take what I can get. “It was pretty cold up there Tuesday night when I arrived, so I was glad I had the full uniform on, but the, sunnies, jandals and button up come out on Boxing Day to try and hang out incognito in sunny Marlborough.”

An Iconic Day in Marlborough WILLIAM WOODWORTH
I’d heard Marlborough was worth stopping for – even if it is just for twenty-four hours. I would be proven right as a stunning bluebird day greeted me as the Marlborough Tour Company van pulled up outside, and the welcoming faces of our guides for the Icons day tour appeared in the morning sunshine. “Morning! You’ve got a lovely day for it – hop aboard!”, said guides Tanya and Lisa. The Marlborough Icons tour immerses people in vineyards and famed delicious local sauvignon blanc and greenshell mussels while driven and hosted by energetic and knowledgeable guides. According to Tanya, the Icons tour is the best way to cover the region when you’ve just got a day – but she is always eager to go on boutique tours that the team can help people craft. “Marlborough Icons trips bring the whole region together into a

the day’s tour group, Tanya and Lisa gave us a first introduction and a plan for the day, before running through a few introductions and some fun facts about the region’s history and why it became a wine powerhouse before our first stop at Forrest Wines. Doctors turned winemaking couple John and Brigid Forrest set up their winery in 1988 and have been pioneers in the naturally created low alcohol wine industry with their famed ‘The Doctor’s’ range. Unique vineyard management techniques mean that the low alcohol wine is made to that level, instead of making a traditional strength wine and taking out ethanol, explained our tasting guide, winemaker and viticulturist Lizzie. We were also gifted a peek behind the curtain into some of the more excluding Forrest wine range, including sampling their low alcohol Doctor’s blended rose plus two grape varietals combined

Nick spent many seasons based in Majorca, captaining superyachts around the Mediterranean, but settled back to Marlborough in 2019 for more opportunities for family time.

We bid adieu to Forrest and headed to the famed Golden Mile of

As we pulled up into Waterfall Bay, the next food platters started appearing out of the ship kitchen – with baskets of freshly steamed mussels, succulent barbequed salmon and another glass of local Sav, this time from Framingham. “The mussels just get steamed in their own juices because they don’t really need anything else with them, but some people like some lemon or spice with them – and the salmon gets a light rub of brown sugar, lemon and salt to bring out more flavour and keep

As the boat moved on with all bellies aboard full, the final stop of the day gave us a look at some of the native fish species in the wild including some blue cod, schools of mullet and some very interested seabirds before Captain Nick turned the Seafood Odyssey around and we cruised back through the Sounds sunshine. On docking back into Picton, we said our goodbyes to the boat’s crew, hopped back into the van and cruised back into Blenheim after an epic day across Marlborough.
After exploring across the width and breadth of Marlborough and only scraping the surface of what the region offers, accompanying the enthusiastic team at Marlborough Tour Company for a day was incredibly insightful. With the Marlborough Icons tour showing off highlights, the team also loves being able to create individualised experiences across Marlborough, allowing people to experience a taste of the region in the time they are there – but the variety of daily tours show off just as many gems that the region has to offer. marlboroughtourcompany.co.nz

SPRUCE UP YOUR GARDEN WITH MITRE 10 MEGA MARLBOROUGH
Vibing at the Vines Village WILLIAM WOODWORTH
Rapaura’s Vines Village hub, in the heart of wine country, brings together many small producers and businesses into something much greater than the sum of its parts. A visit to the Village will not only satisfy those who have come to Marlborough for the wine, but also hosts a range of unique food, drink and craft businesses. However, Marlborough is famous for its wine - and Vines Village launches locals and guests into the wine culture of the region with the Whitehaven cellar door. The Whitehaven wines are made inhouse right around the corner from the Village, and the cellar door hosts guests with tastings in a lounged seating arrangement looking over the village’s lake. Vines Village also hosts Elemental Distillers and their 2023 World Champion Roots Dry Gin, alongside the Roots Gin Shack
celebrating all things gin with their house GnT and Negroni on tap and cocktail options galore, letting people delve into a twist of Marlborough’s newest champion drop in their own way. The Distiller’s Cottage is a new addition to the Vines Village and is a perfect home base for a couple’s getaway in the heart of Marlborough wine country, which is available on AirBnB. The stay includes a complementary Gin Tasting on at the Roots Gin Shack, with views over the Rapaura vineyards and the Richmond Ranges. Vines Café and Deli, heavily frequented by locals, has seats spread out in the gardens for a summery spot for a pick-me-up coffee or meal whether you’re driving by, stopping in for longer, or as a launch point to explore the area. Pack some products into your picnic baskets or build your own Marlborough gift box for friends and family. Across the courtyard is Cheese and Cheers, an experiential spot pairing local and internation-
al whiskies and cheeses. This is something unique to Marlborough, being the region’s only dedicated whisky bar, while also shining a highlight on New Zealand whiskies, while next door neighbours Cone and Scoop supply sweet treats, ice creams and milkshakes for hot Marlborough summer days.
The Quilter’s Barn is a hub for Marlborough’s craft community, with plenty of options to spark the creative mind. The supportive team has everything from beginner guidebooks to a lifetime of fabric, wool, and thread, and aims to create a friendly learning environment and hub for the crafting community. Just like the variety of stores, the four-acre Vines Village grounds also have something for everyone, with playgrounds for the kids, giant chess and a pétanque court for spirited competition, and plenty of room to set up your day stop. Alternatively, if you’re planning something bigger, the Vines Village Outdoor Amphitheatre hosts events of all shapes and sizes. So whether you’re kicking off a boozy cruise down the Golden Mile on a wine tour, stopping in for a coffee and a chat, or just after a varied day out with the family, the Vines Village is a must stop.

Summer pet care ADRIENNE MATTHEWS
Pets are such an important part of many people’s lives and as the summer temperatures rise, we need to be especially mindful of what our furry friend’s needs are. All creatures need plenty of fresh water available and to have the
opportunity to find a cool place to be. This includes animals in paddocks who also need shelter from the heat. There are plenty of great ideas on the internet for constructing simple shelters outdoors. Dogs should only be walked

in the cool of the morning or evening during summer months as they can suffer from heatstroke even at 20 degrees. They must not be left in cars as they cannot cool themselves by panting and, even if the windows are ajar and they have water, they can die from heatstroke in as little as 15 minutes. Many animals enjoy being able to cool down in water and a paddling pool in a shady spot, mist spray with water or a hose down can make a great difference to their enjoyment of summer. Cooling mats are becoming popular for pets but don’t put a wet towel over dogs as it can have the opposite effect to what you imagine, trapping heat instead of letting it out. The heightened temperatures and long, dry grasses at this time of year are a stimulus for allergies. Local company OmegaFlex has developed a range of products based on green lip mussel extracts to help counteract these

It is important to keep your pet groomed. Both cats and dogs can end up with irritable skin if their coats are not properly maintained and some breeds appreciate having a summer shear. Do however make sure that it is safe to shave your dog as breeds such as German Shepherds, Border Collies and Golden Retrievers should never be shorn as it reduces their ability to cool down and can damage hair

MAKE THE MOST OF SUMMER WITH MITRE 10 MEGA MARLBOROUGH
Getting the New Year’s Eve party started in style Picton Foreshore is the place to be this New Year with plenty on offer for the whole family. Photo: File. PAULA HULBURT
Picton is the place to be this New Year’s Eve as Marlborough gets set to celebrate in style. Pure Events Marlborough with the support of Marlborough District Council are again bringing the party vibe and entertainment to the foreshore. An extravaganza of fun and excitement, it promises to be a huge celebration for all the family. On the main stage from 7pm children’s entertainer Jeff Parsnip will bring the fun having released his debut single ‘Tomato Tamati’ in October. “ I want to make parents laugh, and their children sing and dance” says Jeff.
Following on at 8pm will be local band Big Spin taking to the stage. Their take on 2000’s nostalgia/ pop covers will take revellers back to the early 2000’s with Matchbox Twenty, blink-182 and Green Day. Pure Events director Katrina Lange will be welcoming a friend to the stage as local legend and now international artist Tom Knowles gets set for the countdown to midnight. “We are delighted to be having local legend and now international performer Tom Knowles bringing us into the midnight fireworks display with his band Tom Knowles and Friends,” she says. “I’ve known Tom since he was
about 14 years old, performing in musicals and it’s an absolute joy to be having him perform at New Years Eve.” “His three-piece covers band, that will power through the hits across the music spectrum, will be playing all the songs you know and love.” ‘Tom Knowles with Friends Band’ splash onto the scene with vibing kiwi, roots-reggae with a sprinkle of soul, rock, and funky times. This high-octane NZ covers and originals band has played worldwide bringing classic hits and favourites to life and getting the dance floor grooving. Tom has performed worldwide at some of the world’s most exciting
venues and festivals, including the Darwin Arts Festival, the San Diego Fringe Festival, with an Orchestra at Covent Garden in London, has toured to Mexico and America with his 80’s Rock Opera show ‘Allergic To Love’, and was part of the headlining acts for the Big Gay Out, NZ Cabaret Festival and the Cubadupa festival in 2023. With new original music on the way in a range of genres and armed with the anthems from the 70s to today, ‘Tom Knowles with Friends’ are excited to share the Kiwi Vibes, encourage a singalong and ignite the dancefloor. There’ll also be local food vendors, fun for the kids and a finale
firework extravaganza over the water at midnight. Pure Event Marlborough’s New Years Eve Celebration on Picton’s Foreshore starts at 7pm. Organisers have secured the services of Go Bus between Blenheim and Picton to ensure people travel safely for $10 return. Staying safe this New Year STAFF REPORTER
Whatever your plans are for the festive period, Hato Hone St John is wishing everyone a safe and happy holiday season - and sharing an important reminder to look out for whānau and friends. Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve bring increased workload to the ambulance service, with the latter being the single busiest night of the year for incidents. On December 31 calls into the 111 communications centres typically triple on average between 11pm and 2am. Last Christmas, Hato Hone St John paramedics attended 1,203 incidents, with falls/back injuries, chest pains, passing out and breathing difficulties among the top reasons for an ambulance call out. Hato Hone St John Deputy Chief Executive – Clinical Services Dr Damian Tomic is reminding people that 111 should only be used if someone has sustained a serious injury or needs immediate medical attention. He says, “If your call isn’t life threatening, there may be a delay in getting an ambulance to you.
St John’s staff hope that you have a great New Year’s celebration, but they have a quiet evening – with the final day of last year having a tripling of usual calls between 11pm and 2am. Photo: William Woodworth. “As everyone sets off on their holidays, take a few moments to make sure the safety of you and your family is included in your planning.” “We upscale our resources in the hotspots over the festive season, but we’re also asking for all New Zealanders to play their part. “Help each other to prevent incidents that are easily avoidable – like those which may involve alcohol, such as falls and motor vehicle crashes.
“Agree on a sober driver before you start drinking, make sure you stay hydrated and look out for your friends.” On New Year’s Eve last year, assault became the fifth most common reason for an ambulance response. New Year’s Eve also saw a 13 per cent increase in workload, compared with the busiest day for Hato Hone St John in the height of winter. Dr Tomic explains, “As we can see
from last year’s numbers, there’s a notable increase in incidents involving violence on New Year’s Eve. This is why it’s important to be extra vigilant – regardless of whether you are out and about or celebrating at someone’s house. “Keep an eye on your drinks and always check that your friends can make it home safely.” He concludes, “We also won’t tolerate violence or aggression towards our staff under any cir-
cumstances. Teams are working hard, often throughout the night, to make sure the health and wellbeing of the public is top priority. Please be kind and respectful to them. “From all of us at Hato Hone St John, have a wonderful Christmas and New Year.” The following are Hato Hone St John’s tips for staying safe this summer: If you’re on a road-based trip, familiarise yourself with your location before you set off. Find out in advance where the closest hospital or medical centre is to your location and know your exact address in case you need to call for help. Take some first aid supplies, and ensure you pack your prescription medicines. You can also download the free St John CPR app here. Remember to keep batteries from gifts away from children to avoid swallowing. The battery can become lodged in the oesophagus with dangerous results. See our choking first aid advice here. Stay hydrated - especially when in the sun and/or when drinking alcohol, and ensure whānau and friends are doing the same.
