Justice Isac also said Lynch's fian cee, whose heart had been broken by his death, had forgiven Pikaa hu, and prayed that he would never do the same again to any one else.

Bishop Pikaahu described the large and loving family from which his younger, adopted brother had come from. He said they offered unconditional and enduring love from parents and Insiblings.sentencing Pikaahu, Justice Andru Isac acknowledged the personal pain and grief of the victim's family, friends and col leagues, who were also victims. He said Lynch was the fifth of seven children in his family, and a key support through the work he was doing in New Zealand. His death had meant a younger sister had needed to give up stud ies so she could take up work to support the family.

He relayed George Pikaahu's words in a letter to the family, including his sorrow for what he had done, and that every day he regretted what had happened.

"Fist punches were met with a knife," O'Donoghue said. He was cautious of the remorse expressed by Pikaahu, and re minded the court of the wide spread concern of gang members carrying weapons in public plac

Pikaahu lunged forward with the knife, aiming for the victim's stomach, but he avoided being stabbed after he saw the knife and stepped back.

RSE workers Hiko Lynch, Vaea Tonga and Ofa Fifita were RSE workers in Marlborough. On Sat urday June 20, 2021, they were part of a large group of Tongan workers out for a night at a club in central Blenheim. Pikaahu was among members of the Rebels gang visiting from Auckland. As they left, two gang members assaulted an RSE worker, render ing him unconscious. Pikaahu had no knowledge or involve ment, but the assault was said to be the catalyst for what followed. O'Donoghue said while the events of that night last June were not gang warfare, Pikaahu had assumed the lead role in what was "serious violent offending". He said his action in stabbing the two men, and trying to stab a third was a disproportionate re action to the threat posed.

Another little nugget of information that came to light was price paid for the land, $500 / acre or $1235 / Hectare, about twice the going rate for farmland in the central Wairau Plain at the time. So what’s the price of land done in the intervening 50 years? The asking price for bare land, if you can find any, in the same central plains locality will be approaching $200,000 / Ha nowadays, a cool 11% compounding annual growth rate over almost 50 years. To put that into perspective, using the Reserve Bank’s CPI (Housing) calculator for the same period, investing that same $1235 into housing anywhere in the country would have the same value as $87,500 today.

In the early 1970’s, Marlborough was experiencing a severe drought and the young vines planted in August 1973 were without irrigation. With moisture depleted soils from the dry 1973 year, many didn’t survive the summer of ’74. A year after the first vines went in, the first vineyard re-plantings were happening with Muller Thurgau, Riesling, Gewurtztraminer, Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinotage being the mainstays of Marlborough’s new industry. Oh, and there was around 20 Ha of Sauvignon Blanc included in the early Brancott plantings as well. It was very much small beginnings. These vines would have been replaced with grafted, Phylloxera tolerant rootstocks in the early 1990’s. The move to resistant rootstock also saw the disappearance of Muller Thurgau from Marlborough over this time.

Looking around the region today, the third major wave of vineyard redevelopment is starting to occur, driven by both an increasing incidence of trunk disease and a seemingly insatiable global appetite for Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc. Long may it continue.

Harking back to the previous column, we’ve been able to determine that the date that the first vines went into the ground (on what is now Brancott Estate) was sometime between 30 July 1973 and Friday 3 August 1973. One comment that was made to me was that with Marlborough winning the Ranfurly Shield from Canterbury on Saturday 28 July 1973, there was unlikely to be much work done, even if people showed up, on Monday the 30th. Thanks to everyone who responded to my last column on the start of the modern era of grape growing and winemaking in Marlborough 50 years ago next year. I started with Montana in 1989 so missed out on the very early years. While we’re not any closer to confirming the actual date of the first vines going in the ground in 1973, it’s been fascinating to talk to people about their memories and reminisces of that time.
