Piano is their forte

Some talented singers have been raising not just their voices but some eyebrows too as they took a piano on a town centre adventure.

The community piano was on the

move as part of a pop-up performance by Blenheim Choral at Te Kahu o Waipuna, Marlborough Library on Sunday.

Wheeling the piano across Blenheim from the Wesley Centre to the library, members gave people a reason to smile as they spotted

the unusual sight. The piano was soon set up in the library’s foyer where singers made the most of the acoustics, treating members of the public to a special pop-up performance. The Blenheim performance will feature more than 50 local sing

ers, three soloists, two pianists and five percussionists. The library stairs offered delighted audience members the perfect place to sit and enjoy several songs. As voices lifted to

to a standstill, listening to the performance.

The themes in Carmina Buraof fate, fortune, love, lust and drinking still resonate in the 21st Century,

“The pop-up will definitely be Carmina burana ‘lite’... and will give a taste of the different moods of the music from intense to quite romantic and dreamy. “It will give a small taste which will hopefully encourage people to want to hear more.”

The percussionists and pianists will get together on Wednesday and the choir will join them on Thursday for another rehearsal.

“We won’t all come together with percussionists etc until next Thursday and that’s where Robert will do his magic and meld us altogether for the big night,” Joy -

Head start to support child cancer charity

PAULA HULBURT

Kind hearted colleagues at a Blenheim supermarket are putting their heads together for charity - literally.

A team of friends from New World are getting set to shave off their hair in support of the Child Cancer Foundation’s Wig Wednesday.

The nationwide fundraiser helps raise money for Kiwi kids and their families affected by cancer.

Jenner Halcrow, Amy Fraser, Tanya Poa, Jacqui Botman, Bryce Walding, Jason Walker, Christine Farrer, Jess Gleeson, Alex Rangi and Kyle Flood have all volunteered to get their locks lopped off.

On Wednesday 13 September, thousands of Kiwis are supporting tamariki with cancer and their families by taking part in Wig Wednesday, a nationwide fundraiser for Child Cancer Foundation.

New World co-owner Tineke Powell says it would be wonderful for the team to get as much support as possible.

Every week in New Zealand, more than three kids are diagnosed with cancer.

The treatment these children un-

dergo often means they need to brave the world with no hair. Wig Wednesday is a fun day where people can support these kids by wearing a wig, styling a funky hairdo, or shaving their head while raising money for Child Cancer Foundation.

Child Cancer Foundation’s Chief Executive, Monica Briggs says there is an increased need for the foundation’s help as cost of living

rises hit home.

“We are so grateful for their dedication to raising money for these whānau during what has been a difficult year for many Kiwis.

“We have seen families of all backgrounds pushed into severe stress and hardship this year as a result of their child’s cancer diagnosis.

“This is where New Zealanders’ generosity becomes a real lifeline

for these families.

“Together, we can ensure they are supported through one of the toughest times in their lives.” Child Cancer Foundation needs to raise over $200,000 on Wig Wednesday to provide emotional, financial and practical support to those in need.

Piano dispute causing disharmony

ASB Theatre staff have come under fire for failing to maintain a rare Steinway concert piano.

Marlborough Civic Orchestra performed their annual concert, Passionata at the ASB Theatre last Saturday.

But organisers have been left angry and embarrassed, saying the piano had been neglected and was out of tune.

Concerns have also been raised elsewhere over standards of professionalism and high prices.

Marlborough Civic Orchestra’s Musical Director Elgee Leung says he discovered the piano had not been tuned for two years the night before the concert.

“Normally, concert venues have a maintenance schedule to tune the concert grand at least four times a year.

“I found this incident not only extremely stressful for the guest soloists, our orchestral members, our 15 professional and semi-professional guest players from Auckland, Christchurch, and Nelson, and myself, but also a major embarrassment for the Marlborough region.

“ASB Theatre, being the main event venue, showed a lack of professionalism and knowledge

in venue management.”

Elgee, a world-renowned cellist, says he has performed at more than 500 concerts in venues across many countries and has never experienced a similar issue. He has vowed not to hold any more of his concerts at the ASB.

“I’m cancelling a chamber music concert there in October 2023 and will be performing mostly in Nelson and Christchurch for my future concerts.”

Despite the best efforts of a Nelson-based piano tuner, who tried four times to bring the piano up to standard, the Steinway could only be tuned temporarily.

Attempts to borrow the theatre’s Yamaha concert grand instead were denied, Elgee says.

“Staff refused, citing that we requested the Steinway in our hire contract.

“We ended up starting the concert late, as the piano was still being tuned at 7pm but we really appreciate all the tuner’s efforts.”

Theatre CEO Joseph Casalme has apologised to the orchestra and says he is committed to resolving the situation.

In a written response to questions from the Marlborough Weekly, Joseph says the piano tuner contacted the orchestra the night prior to the concert.

“Marlborough Civic Orchestra

(and unfortunately not the ASB Theatre Marlborough) was contacted by the piano tuner, our subcontractor, with an urgent message on the night before their event.

“MCO only alerted the theatre staff on the afternoon of the concert day.

“After gaining a better understanding of the issue, venue staff immediately worked collectively on different options and eliminated logistically impossible scenarios whilst working under very

tight timelines.”

Elgee says orchestra members expected more for their hire fee and were disappointed overall. The orchestra performed the same programme at NCMA, the next day for a discounted rate.

“Most MCO members agree that on top of the piano issue, the service, acoustics, and support of ASB Theatre was hugely inferior to NCMA, which charged us at a discount rate and the hire costs were less than a quarter of what we paid to ASB,” Elgee says.

Joseph says while the orchestra did perform another successful orchestral concert, he acknowledges the incident was “stressful.” “I am committed to getting a comprehensive understanding of the issues they faced and will stay in contact until the issues are resolved.”

According to the depreciation schedule in the theatre’s latest financial statements, the Steinway was purchased in 2016 when the theatre opened at the cost of $116,076.

Elgee says he is “100 per cent sure” the piano is now worth considerably less and says there are concerns over the temperature it is being stored at.

Specific questions regarding the condition of the Steinway were not answered, with Joseph saying it was important to consider commercially sensitive information.

“At this stage, we will continue to reach out and collaboratively work with MCO first in good faith and build a positive resolution from this situation.”

“We would also like to ensure that our management and Board of Trustees conduct its affairs professionally and are committed to enriching life in Marlborough by engaging people in the performing arts and events.”

Helping parents thrive

A parenting support group is proving so popular, organisers have expanded their reach in a bid to help more people.

Tupu (Thrive) initially started as a support group for young parents.

But organiser Tracy Pigou quickly realised parents of any age needed just as much assistance. She says while there were groups to help develop children’s learning, there wasn’t much for parents.

“Parenting can be really toughbeing a stay-at-home parent can get really lonely for many, and babies don’t come with an instruction manual.

“We have parents that come in exhausted, or with tears in their eyes because they are really struggling.

“As a group, we get around them as a community and members share helpful tips they find work with their own children.”

Tupu takes place at Redwoodtown Plunket Rooms on Wednesday mornings.

Tracy says the supportive, social, educational and judgment free environment is geared toward upskilling parents in a welcoming environment.

Children enjoy a range of activities, giving parents a chance to talk and support each other.

“The needs of our parents vary

wildly – we have our regulars that come in weekly, but also parents that come in every couple of weeks or for talks on specific topics,” she says.

“I quickly realised we needed to widen our scope to support everyone, because we have first time parents from age 16 to age 40 that come in with the same struggles”.

No topic is too simple for Tupu

says Tracy, who herself is a certified child car seat fitter who ensures parents know how to take care of their kids properly while travelling.

“We have educators come in every few weeks from organisations across Marlborough.

“Every few months we also ask our parents what talks they want topics on, and a great team of volunteers that come in and help

where they can as a learning experience for them too.”

Tracy sees a huge need across Marlborough including parents in similar situations that can’t make their Wednesday group. Funding is available from Blue Door grants and the Primary Health Organisation, but more support and hands on deck are needed to fulfil that goal.

“There’s so much more we can do and we’re very thankful but limited by the funding we get from the Ministry of Education,” Tracy says.

“However, if you as a parent feel you need some help or someone to listen to struggles you have the best thing you can do is reach out and start that progress, whether it’s with Tupu or the many other amazing support networks Marlborough has”.

If you are interested in attending as a parent or helping Tupu thrive for the benefit of Marlborough’s parents, contact Tracy on 022 059 8368 or thrivetupu@myt.org.nz

Special Olympians celebrate big wins

Three Special Olympic athletes from Marlborough have taken top honours in an equestrian event representing the region.

Jarrod Temaro, Hannah Dickens and Zoe Tate travelled to Wellington on Friday to compete in three sections; dressage, equita-

tion and working trail.  The trio, who were competing on unfamiliar horses, all ended up with ribbons in their individual group events.

Coach Samara Lloyd who accompanied the group says she is very proud of what they achieved.

Samara and the athletes have been training at Marlborough RDA, learning the different disciplines and skills needed to participate in this event.

“Not knowing their horse is an added challenge but the athletes adapted well and worked well

with the ponies chosen for them,” Samara says.

“I’m the proudest coach ever.”

Jarrod took first place in Working Trail, second in Equitation and third place in Dressage. Hannah took first place in Working Trail and was third in both Dressage

and Equitation.

Zoe won three first places ribbons in all three categories. Marlborough Special Olympics will be hosting a ribbon day at RDA on 14 October, and are hoping to welcome riders from out of the region to join this event.

News In Brief

VICTIM’S BRAVERY

A judge has described as “remarkable” the bravery of an elderly woman who suffered a horrific attack in her home at the hands of a 13-year-old. The Ministry of Justice has released the Youth Court decision on the case to Open Justice with strict orders in place to protect the victim and the youth offender, for whom suppression is automatic. The boy ultimately received a Section 282 discharge under the Oranga Tamariki Act, which meant the charge of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm was deemed never to have been laid.

TREE SPREE

Thousands of new trees and shrubs have been planted at Seymour Square and Pollard Park by Marlborough District Council gardeners. The trees were mostly planted on the western side of Seymour Square to fill the gap left by a 100-year-old pin oak which fell during a storm. The pin oak was planted in 1921 by Prince Edward during a visit here.

ZONE CHANGE

A vineyard next to a new subdivision in Blenheim could be pulled out to make way for 200 homes. The land, dubbed Kerepi – te reo Māori for grapes – is a 12-hectare property on Old Renwick Rd in Springlands, neighbouring Rose Manor subdivision. Marlborough District Council first needs to approve two separate variations to the Proposed Marlborough Environment Plan (PMEP), which will require consultation.

Garage blaze needed back up crews

Emergency services successfully battled a blaze at a residential garage in Redwoodtown, Blenheim.

Multiple calls to Fire and Emergency saw fire trucks rushing to the scene at about 1.25pm on Sunday afternoon. And with the back-section Litchfield Street garage ‘well

ablaze’ a second alarm was sounded.

Three Fire and Emergency appliances from Blenheim and one from RNZAF Base Woodbourne worked hard to extinguish the fire, says Fire and Emergency spokesman Ryan Dawson. He says he was not aware of anyone requiring medical attention.

IT NEVER RAINS BUT IT POURS

It will come as no surprise the winter of 2022 has likely set wet weather records. A new rainfall record was set for Blenheim, with monthly rainfall exceeding 200mm in the town. Surface Water Hydrologist Charlotte Tomlinson told members of Council’s Environment & Planning Committee figures show significant rainfall. “July 2022 was the wettest month in 93 years for Blenheim with 220mm of rain received.”

Revving up mental health support

The Roadhouse Breakfast is a Marlborough car community staple, and this Father’s Day car enthusiasts are pulling together to support mental health funding. Funds from the breakfast, car show and cruise go to mental health charity I AM HOPE, who fund private counselling for those in need.

The next monthly Breakfast, on the first Sunday of each month, aspires to be the largest gathering yet.

Organisers hope people will come along and enjoy the cars, minigolf and a bouncy castle or join the Father’s Day cruise to the Pelorus Tavern.

Spokesperson Luton Anderson and his prized Ford F100 will be in the pack.

“It’s a cause people don’t mind talking about now. Mike King and John Kirwan have helped massively to show the days are gone where Kiwis tell one another to eat concrete and harden up,” says Luton.

“I listen to The Rock FM a lot and they do a lot for I AM HOPE, and sadly I lost a couple of mates over lockdown to suicide so if we can help the younger ones through what we love and save lives that’s a massive win.”

New Zealand also has the highest rate of youth suicide among developed countries.

When Roadhouse owner Chris

Wagner pitched hosting, the Breakfast had a 40-car goal – but quickly grew through word-ofmouth and social media.

Five years on, the Roadhouse Breakfast has done a a December toy drive for the Salvation Army which filled a furniture truck, as well as events for the SPCA and Sudden Infant Death Syndrome charities.

“We’ve got so big we have six new volunteers who came along

and said, “give us a job.” We want to put our shared enthusiasm behind continuing to do good through these get-togethers,” says Luton.

coming, you know you’re doing something right!”

Now Luton is aiming higher, with goals of 300 vehicles joining the cruise from Riverlands through Blenheim and Spring Creek, along Rapaura Road to the Pelorus Tavern where they will meet up with a joint cruise coming from Nelson.

“Every Breakfast there’s new cars – our biggest fear is that one day the thousand individual cars we’ve probably seen over the last five years will all turn up at once!”, laughs Luton.

Prizes up for grabs include a ride in GHOST with Burnout Bully at October’s Lolife Burnout Competition in Kaikoura, and a Marlborough Car Club hotlap.

“Whether it’s two bucks in the bucket or a $5 raffle ticket or whatever, it’s all going to a great goal”, says Luton.

“It’s an open, free event with no club affiliation. Last month we had 160 cars, including ten new ones and people who never miss one, but for Father’s Day

there’s people travelling up from Christchurch and Geraldine too.

“The breakfast has become a general counselling session with vehicles as an icebreaker, chatting to people you wouldn’t socialise with our passion as a link.

“No matter what you’ve got, if it’s got wheels and you like it bring it alongwhen you’ve got the tight knit rotary community and younger fellas in their MX5’s and Subaru’s

“We’ve had phenomenal support from sponsors and the community approaching us with raffle prizes, awards for vehicles or spot prize giveaways, all working together for a good cause.”

“If we can get two or three kids counselling sessions out of the day, it’s all worthwhile”.

The Roadhouse Breakfast team would like to thank hosts Riverlands Roadhouse and Pelorus Tavern, and sponsors Repco, Exide Batteries, BNT Automotive, Details Blenheim, Accessman, CARPRO NZ, and Bounce With Us, for their support.

From Aussie auction to Derby Day delight … Stephanie’s Choice pays off

“It’s amazing to have bred a Victoria Derby winner,” Stephanie said.

VRC Derby is pretty unbelievable and quite surreal. I just felt numb afterwards.

jaw-droppingly gorgeous.

Fifteen years after returning from Australia with the horse that kick-started her thoroughbred breeding career, Stephanie Hole sat in the lounge of her Marlborough home and watched that mare’s progeny claim one of the most coveted prizes on the Australasian racing calendar. Late last year she celebrated her finest moment as a breeder when three-year-old colt Manzoice, trained by Kiwi Chris Waller, won the Group One Victoria Derby over a gruelling 2500m at Flemington, near Melbourne.

“He was a gorgeous athletic animal from day one and richly deserved to win.

“People who aren’t in the industry think the Melbourne Cup is the epitome and the race we all want to win and I have been trying to explain to them that it is the Derby, or Oaks for three-year-olds.

“Derbies are where the top colts are found that go on to be top stallions. Very few come from the Melbourne Cup, which is the ‘People’s Race’ that stops two nations.

“For a small breeder to win the

“I thought it was a dream come true when [Manzoice’s dam] Choice won the Eulogy Stakes, but to go on and leave a Derby winner was pretty special.” Stephanie was captivated by Manzoice since first setting eyes on him as a foal at Wentwood Grange in Cambridge, where he was raised.

“When I first went to see him as a foal I just said wow, and then wow again and again.

“The boys at Wentwood all had big smiles on their faces. He just had that real presence and he was

“I felt that way about Almanzor [Manzoice’s sire] when I first saw him as well. For me Almanzor was so successful on the track and his conformation, which is so important to me, was excellent so I hoped he would be the perfect choice for Choice.”

Choice is the third foal out of Femme Britannia, the foundation mare that Stephanie bought in Australia over a decade ago, and the third winner. And that trip is a story in itself.

“I went to the sales [in Australia] with Bruce Perry,” Stephanie recalled.

“I have a history in sport horses and did a lot of judging. I was using Bruce for the pedigree but if the conformation isn’t there I am not interested.

“Femme wasn’t on either of our lists but when I saw her, I just had to have her. After much pestering of Bruce, I got him to put his hand up. I think he was waiting for someone else to outbid him, but I kept on pestering him.

“She just struck me, and being in-foal to Fastnet Rock it was hard to argue against. I thought it couldn’t go wrong until she slipped the Fastnet Rock at ten and a half months!”

While her first foray into thoroughbred breeding didn’t go to plan, she has had seven healthy foals out of the mare to date, including Choice, her first stakes winner who holds a special place in Stephanie’s heart.

“I had put Choice through the sales at NZB, but she didn’t meet her reserve,” she said.

“So I raced her on my own and I was excited to get a second in the Soliloquy Stakes and she won the Eulogy Stakes, which I thought was the epitome then for a backyard breeder.

“I have accumulated a few more horses now and they are all at Wentwood Grange where Manzoice was raised. I am looked after there like I am part of the family.”

Almanzor, the European Champion Three-Year-Old of his year, quickly caught Stephanie’s attention when he was announced by Cambridge Stud, and she booked into the son of Wootton Bassett in his debut season at stud.

“I want to breed stayers and I have always loved the European style of horse,” said Stephanie.

“I tentatively booked into (Almanzor) before I saw the horse, but I loved him as soon as I saw him.

“The colt (Manzoice) exceeded all expectations. He had that real ‘look at me’ factor. He knew he was special.”

Making Derby Day even more special for Stephanie was a phone call prior to the big race from Wentwood, announcing the arrival of a full sister to Manzoice. “She had the filly [foal] an hour before the race,” explained Stephanie.

“The three Hawkins boys were all over in Australia at the races, so it was left to their father Des to foal her.

“When he called me after the race he joked, ‘thank goodness [Choice] foaled before the Derby - it would have been far too big a responsibility afterwards’.”

At the moment Stephanie owns 10 broodmares (some in partnership) and races three thoroughbreds – Belladonna Lily, Astrakhan and Megatrendz – the first two having already tasted success on the track. This last season has seen nine home-bred runners notch up 16 wins.

While opportunities abound to become more involved in the industry and increase her breeding stocks, Stephanie is a firm believer in “quality not quantity”, and it would be hard to argue with her, given how much success has already emanated from her small team.

“I don’t think I have plans to get bigger,” she said. “I think the only thing is to get better, there’s always something that can come off the bottom and hopefully something that can come in at the top.”

Mako forced to settle for one out of three

It has been a tough eight days for the Tasman men’s rugby side. On Sunday, they escaped from their “Storm Week” with a victory – but it was by the skin of their teeth and resurrected an NPC campaign which was beginning to stutter after a strong effort against Auckland in week two. After being soundly beaten by Northland in Whangarei, Tasman went down 7-0 to Wellington in a somewhat bizarre midweek Ranfurly Shield challenge in the capital, leaving them desperate for a morale boost, and some competition points.

On Sunday, at Nelson’s Trafalgar Park, they got both, overcoming a stern challenge from North Harbour. The Mako eventually prevailed 20-15 in golden point extra time after the scores were level 15-15 at the end of regulation time.

Explosive winger Timoci “Jim” Tavatavanawai was the hero for the local side. He scored with seven minutes remaining in normal time, bringing the scores level. Then, after Macca Springer’s conversion attempt struck the post, the match went into overtime. Playing the 10 minutes of extra time into the wind, Tasman surged onto attack and found enough time and space on the right to give Tavatavanawai a run at the corner, the Central powerhouse making no mistake as he bulldozed over the line to secure a much-needed win.

Despite grabbing the points, Tasman would not be happy with their display.

There were too many errors for

that, and they appeared jaded at times after a whole-hearted Ranfurly Shield challenge on Wednesday. But they hung in there against a fresher Harbour outfit and ultimately reaped the reward, although the result could well have gone the other way.

The first half was a scrappy affair and ended with the visitors, who had first use of a building wind at their backs, having scored two tries to their hosts’ one.

The Mako struck first, buoyed by the return of leading forwards

Ethan Blackadder and Pari Pari Parkinson, hooker Feleti Kaitu’u rumbling over on the back of a lineout drive in the eighth minute. However, Harbour were quick to respond.

After stringing together 18 phases of attack Harbour prop Tevita Mafile’o crashed over from close range, rewarding his side for their patience and accuracy on attack.

A couple of Tasman errors invited the visitors back into the strike zone six minutes later and this time it was first five Oscar Koller who darted over in the corner,

again after multiple phases.

Tasman had a string of opportunities to level the scores before the break but a combination of poor decisions, inaccuracy and handling errors conspired to deny them.

A point of difference in the first 40 for Harbour was their livewire halfback Jamie Booth, whose decision-making and cool head gave him a clear edge over Mako opposite Louie Chapman.

Tom Marshall, who had a standout match stepping into the somewhat jinxed 10 shirt after injuries to Mitch Hunt, Taine Robinson and Tim O’Malley, sparked a try for Springer five minutes after oranges.

However, Harbour bounced back 10 minutes later, midfielder Henry Taefu crossing the Tasman line to put the northerners ahead 1510, setting the stage for Tavatavanawai’s late heroics in a seven-try match which included no successful goalkicks.

Mako skipper Quinten Strange looked relieved after the final whistle as he looked back on a

tough eight days.

“All week we have dug deep,” he told Sky Sport, “we had some honest conversations and to come out her on Sunday to T Park and finish off with a golden point [win], far out, I’m just proud of the boys,” he said.

Shield challenge falls short Tasman’s 17-year wait to get their hands on the Ranfurly Shield goes on.

The Mako, challenging for the coveted Log of Wood for just the fourth time, came up just short after a titanic battle in the capital.

The challengers had several chances, especially in the latter stages of the second half, to pull off a historic victory but ultimately lacked the cohesion, discipline and perhaps a slice of good luck, to get the job done.

There was no shortage of effort from the men in red. They forced the Lions to make nearly double the tackles they did, and bashed away relentlessly at a well-organised defence.

The Mako will look back at a few

missed opportunities, including two very adjacent penalty attempts, and an inability to finish off several long periods of pressure. They will also rue a series of botched line-outs and some untimely injuries, which disrupted their flow.

There was only one try in the match, stemming from a first half lineout drive which allowed hooker James O’Reilly to dot down. Aidan Morgan converted to give the holders a seven-point advantage against the run of play, an advantage they would, somewhat bizarrely, maintain until the final whistle at the Caketin. There was no shortage of heroes for both sides.

Tom Marshall, Timoci Tavatavanawai, Alex Nankivell, Levi Aumua, Anton Segner, Quinten Strange and Max Hicks were outstanding for the challengers, leaving everything out there, while the experience of Wellington veterans Dominic Bird, Brad Shields and Du Plessis Kirifi was proved pivotal for the home side. On Sunday, Tasman will play Manawatu in Nelson, with a 4.35pm kick-off. They will be keen for points to ensure they remain in touch with the NPC leaders, but also eager to avoid any more overtime dramatics. Scores:

SUNDAY: Tasman 20 - after extra time (Timoci Tavatavanawai 2, Macca Springer, Feleti Kaitu’u tries) North Harbour 15 (Tevita Mafile’o, Oscar Koller, Henry Taefu tries). HT: 10-5 Harbour.

WEDNESDAY: Wellington 7 (James O’Reilly try, Aidan Morgan con) Tasman 0. HT: 7-0 Wellington.

Mako women bound for semifinals

The Tasman women’s rugby team are bound for Palmerston North and a Farah Palmer Cup championship semifinal after battling past Taranaki at Trafalgar Park on Sunday afternoon.

The Mako disposed of Taranaki 61-10 in the round robin competition but met a more resilient Whio side this time around, being made to work harder for points before getting home 45-20. The first quarter was scrappy, both sides appearing nervous, making ball handling inconsistent and attacking rhythm hard to find.

Eventually left winger Fiaali’i

Solomona set the ball rolling for the locals, charging down a clearing kick then scooping up the rebound and dotting down her sixth try in eight games.

Further first half tries to No 8 Neve Anglesey, flanker Tamara Silcock, and right winger Iva Sauira, three converted by first five Cassie Siataga, saw the Mako surge to a 26-3 halftime advantage.

With their big forwards carrying hard and cleaning well, Tasman were able to set a strong platform for their outside backs, with Solomona, centre Lesieli Taufa and Sauira particularly dangerous with ball in hand.

After the break it was the vis-

itors who came out strongest, with a breeze at their backs, and notched a converted try after just eight minutes.

However, this merely prompted the locals to up their work rate and Taufa was next on the scoreboard, claiming an interception in the Whio 22. A second try to Sauira followed, before hard-working hooker Avua Filimaua crashed over to complete the home side’s scoring.

Taranaki had the final say though, late tries to Janelle Dhedafig and Louise Blyde, sparked by their outstanding Black Ferns halfback Iritana Hohaia, ending their season on a high note.

Next week Tasman will play

Manawatu, who they lost to 4614 in round robin, in one semifinal. Northland host Otago in the other semi.

Scores: Tasman 45 (Fiaali’i Solomona, Lesieli Taufa, Neve Angle-

sey, Tamara Silcock, Iva Sauira 2, Avau Filimaua tries, Cassie Siataga 5 con) Taranaki 20 (Hannah McLean, Janelle Dhedadig, Louise Blyde tries, Laura Claridge pen, con). HT: 26-3

Trojans wrap up season in style

PETER JONES

Call Care Trojans finished the 2023 Marlborough men’s football season on a high note, winning the Knockout Cup for the second time in three years at A&P Park on Saturday.

After another tightly-fought encounter with chief rivals Central Buccaneers, Trojans came away as 1-0 victors.

The match-winning goal came in the first quarter, striker Matt Weaver putting himself in the right place at the right time when a cross came in from the left.

Five metres from goal, Weaver blasted the ball into the back of the net to score the only goal of a match in which clear-cut chances were scarce.

He also had the second-best chance of the first spell. After latching onto a well-weighted cross, his glancing header rebounding off the far upright and straight into the hands of Central keeper Jason Scammell.

The second half saw both sides

create some half chances, a shot from Buccaneers’ standout Ryan Palmer stinging the palms of the Trojan’s keeper, but most attempts were from long range or rushed as the clock ticked down. With the finalists knowing each other well after meeting on three previous occasions this season, for two wins to Central and a draw, the respective defences were alert to any potential threats and quickly snuffed out attacking forays.

On the balance of possession and scoring opportunities Trojans deserved to take the honours. They displayed more hustle and desire to win the 50/50 balls, their efforts led by Weaver and Tomas Lupani up front, Brayden Livingstone, Nathan Mathieson, Kevin Huxtable and Kyle Evans in midfield, plus Phil Newport, Aaron Powell, Josh Powell, William de Reeper and keeper Emiliano Borghi at the back.

Arotea Kiwi are the 2023 Marlborough premier men’s grade champions, claiming the Benning Cup, after beating Marlborough Boys’ College 1st XI, 2-0 in the final at College Park on Saturday. Both the goals were scored by Tom Kibblewhite.

Arotea Kiwi men also claimed the Hamblyn Trophy for winning the round-robin competition.

Also contested on Saturday was the division one final, between Awatere and Beawai Masters.

This turned into a thrilling encounter, a Sam McConway goal in the second quarter pushing Beawai ahead, before goals to Millie Milton and Brooke Thompson ensured the Tussocks picked up the Clarrie Rayner Shield. That match was preceded by the division one play-off for third and fourth between MBC 2nd XI

and Arotea Kiwi women, which finished in a 1-1 stalemate. The women’s round robin competition was won by Arotea Kiwi women, who took out the Register Family Trophy and the Atkinson Challenge Cup for winning the round robin competition. In the division two, college grade, final Kaikoura High School claimed the 85-year-old C N Fiske Cup, beating MBC Gold in the decider.

on to make a couple of saves during the match underlined the general flow of possession and scoring opportunities.

Thom Hall, Joe Timms, Ryan Palmer, Freddie Kennedy, Joel Collingwood and Dan Segovia worked hard to create scoring opportunities for the league champions, but were regularly denied by desperate defence.

Central’s defence was superbly marshalled by Tom Morley, with Jared Haley, Jacob Boon, Ants

Arnesen forced to cover a lot of ground as their rivals attacked on both flanks.

Trojans’ skipper Kevin Huxtable was happy to again get his hands on the trophy, after winning it in 2021 then seeing Buccaneers take the honours last season.

“They [Central] have been our biggest rivals over the past four years or so … it always seems to come down to us and them later in the season.

“The games between us are enjoyable … very physical, clean football, most of the time, and today was no different.

“Every one of our lads put in a big shift today, especially our defence who cut off their main striker. The whole team proved they deserved to win … it is a great way to finish the season,” Kevin added. Two other finals were played on Saturday. The Knockout Bowl was won by Picton Crow Tavern who downed Rangers Masters, while the Knockout Shield was claimed by Rangers City who beat Call Care Spartans.

College teams spread wings

The focus this week is firmly on college sport as the annual winter tournament week takes place across the country.

A variety of college teams from Marlborough will be in action, both home and away.

Three events will be hosted in Marlborough.

The Southern Schools Cycling Tour took place on Saturday and Sunday, based in the Seddon area, the under-15 boys’ rugby tournament began on Monday and will run until Wednesday at Lansdowne Park and the Gary Sowden girls football tournament will be staged at A&P Park from Monday to Thursday.

Both MBC and MGC had representation on the cycle tour, while MBC and MGC will field what are expected to be very competitive sides at the rugby and football tournaments.

Marlborough Boys’ College are represented across five sports. Their First XI football side will play in the Jim Wisheart tournament in Nelson, while the under-15 football side travels to Dunedin. Also in Dunedin will be the Senior and Junior A basketball sides.

The First XI hockey team will travel to Nelson to play in the Johnson Cup, while the 2nd XI will play in Taranaki for the Galletly Cup.

Marlborough Girls’ College will take part in seven sports.

An MGC rugby side will travel to Westport for the Buller Rugby 10s, a junior basketball side will take part in the zone four premierships in Dunedin and the MGC First XI hockey side travel to Nelson for the Audrey Timlin tournament.

The Senior A netball side head to Invercargill for the South Island Secondary Schools tournament, where they are in the top division, while a group of equestrians will travel to Christchurch for the SISS champs.

Picton’s Queen Charlotte College will have three teams involved. The QCC senior netball team will also play in the SISS tournament in Invercargill, competing in grade two. The college’s badminton team is going to Porirua to compete in the NZSS teams championships, while the QCC girls rugby side will also compete in the 10-a-side event in Westport.

Quins v Pelorus in netball final

The foundations were laid for an intriguing premier netball final showdown at Stadium 2000 on Tuesday night.

Harlequins Indevin and Pelorus Edridge Contracting, effectively last year’s premier finalists, completed comprehensive semifinal victories to book a place in the big dance.

The unbeaten Harlequins combination, who will start as favourites in Saturday’s decider at the Stadium, romped past Pelorus Gill Construction 7636 in the evening’s early semifinal, then Pelorus racked up an eerily similar 76-29 scoreline against Marlborough Girls’

College in the later match. Both games were one-sided, suggested the winning combinations will bring hot form into the “big dance”.

Harlequins are fortunate to have a depth of talent in all three sectors of the court.

Lauren Murray, Fiaali’i Solomona, Wiri Bristowe and Ramona Waikato are all very capable in the attacking circle; Bridget Gane, Simone Pedersen, Sophie Robinson and Kayla Collins run the midcourt while Wendy Trolove and Mackenzie Baird are turning into a formidable combination at the defensive end.

Pelorus have also forged a powerful combination. The

partnership between Paige Lovell and fellow circle attacker Megan Cosgrove is settled and paying dividends, while Laura Evans, Brittney Lyons, Ana Horncastle and Jordy Peipi provide polished attack and doughty defence in midcourt. At the back, Danelle Moffatt and Ella Smith have forged a burgeoning partnership, snapping up any wayward passes and rebounds. Pelorus will be well focussed on scoring the club’s first premier crown, but it will take a huge team effort to topple the mighty Quins.

Semifinal scores: Pelorus Edridge Contracting 76 (Paige Lovell 61/78, Megan Cosgrove

15/19) Marlborough Girls’ College 29 (Anel Moli 6/12, Hazel Glover 13/22, Jess Cruson 10/13). Quarter scores (winning team first): 19-4, 206, 14-11, 23-8.

Harlequins Indevin 76 (Lauren Murray 20/30, Ramona Waikato 3/4, Fiaali’i Solomona 27/35, Wiri Bristowe 26/32) Pelorus Gill Construction 36 (Liv Pinkerton 14/15, Karli Murphy 7/13, Cara Gallop 15/25).

Quarter scores: 19-9, 20-6, 1912, 18-9.

Data Collector Role

Looking for a part-time job? Work on the boat ramps and help contribute to important fisheries research for NIWA - and get paid to do it!

We’re after a candidate in the Picton general area to conduct interviews with recreational fishers at the Waikawa boat ramp as they return from a day’s fishing, so we can use the data to help determine the wellbeing of our fish stocks across Aotearoa.

Data Collection candidates can work alone, have good verbal communication skills, and are able to handle data. We’re after honest, trustworthy, and reliable people - an interest in fishing is preferred but not essential! As a bonus, you’ll get to work outdoors, within the local community, and we’ll provide you with a competitive hourly rate - including time & a half on public holidays.

WHEN: The data collection period runs year-round with approximately 60 mid-week and weekend/public holiday days (around 4-8 days each month). Shifts are 4-hours long and in the afternoon. This job may initially be shared, with the possibility of taking on the whole role in the future.

If this sounds like you, or if you know someone who would be keen, please don’t hesitate to get in contact!

Applications close end of August or until filled.

Niki Davey, NIWA Nelson 0800 926 278 (leave a message if not answered) or niki.davey@niwa.co.nz
